What is a mindmap? Well, it's a type of map or chart typically used to display a hierarchy of things or concepts, with successive branches emerging from a central point.
For more than three years, I've been working on a map of fictional crossovers using the mindmap program MindMup, drawing lines to connect hundreds of different fictional universes.
Unfortunately, where prior to that MindMup had been a free program with an optional $3 monthly subscription that unlocked additional features, in May of 2026, they revamped both their pricing - removing the free option and raising the minimum subscription to $6 per month for an annual subscription or $9 per month for a monthly subscription - and the program itself, resetting a lot of customization and making the whole thing a lot uglier.
Accordingly, I backed up my work, ended my time with MindMup and have been searching for a replacement off and on ever since.
Ideally, this replacement would allow me to pick up where I left off by being able to work with the .mup file that my map is saved as - and my dream option would of course be a free fork or backup of MindMup version 2 - but I'd settle for anything that could handle the job I've got for it. EDrawMind and FreeMind can supposedly both accept .mup files, but when I tried each of them my backup file was too big to load, which leads me to suspect that they wouldn't be able to handle the size of my map even if I remade it from scratch.
(I can remake it from scratch, to be clear; in addition to multiple .mup files, I also have the entire thing saved as a text file.)
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
