High Pressure (Saga of Tanya the Evil/Avatar: the Last Airbender)

Not giving Tanya's name a different spelling was a missed opportunity.

But the original series had names like Ursa and Poppy, and all the names are pronounced as they would in American English, so it's not distracting.

The names are written in English for our benefit, while the language and writing system in-universe are the equivalent of Chinese, if not Chinese itself.

this looks like a lot of fun! I love the plan here, a guerilla war really is the only viable method for Tanya and the Air Remnants

The fire nation should still have dragons for riding as sozin shouldn't have begun his dragon extinction policy yet.
With the air nomad sky bison and the fire nation dragons Tanya could even have some air battles like in her last world.

Tanya should have the nomads under her command ditch the bright orange monk robes and get army camouflage style clothes for better hiding in the wilderness or at least earth kingdom clothes so the fire nation won't pick them out in a crowd.

and stop shaving their hair, so that they can blend into civilian populations, like Aang did in book 3

I Imagine the corpse disposable going into two ways.
Funeral Pyres that might caused Ash to scatter via the wind. And the territories below just realized what that sudden ashfall was after news of an ill fated fire nation attack and partial air nomad genocide that just happened.

Or the horrifying hundreds of fire nation corpses dropped from the sky.

Fun.

Wonder what the fire nation will come to hate more. The chemical and guerilla warfare she creates for the surviving air nomads or the trench warfare she'll help create for the earth kingdom.
One thing is clear is that the fire nation is in for a much rougher Hundred Years' War than they expected.

When aang comes along in a hundred years or so the air nomads are going to be completely alien to him compared to what they where before the war.
No more bald pacifists monks in bright orange clothes, with Tanya as there leader the air nomads will be considered some of the most bloodthirsty people around they probably won't even be vegetarians anymore when aang shows up.

Just realised that the air nomads divided their four main temples into two for females and two for males. So Tanya now had an all female force of guirella fighters after all the men got killed by the fire nation.

Color me interested. While I feel like you could use a little more description to fill out the details, the main core of this story is definitely a good one. I have yet to see this kinda take on Air Nomad survivors, and honestly, can't wait to see how it develops.

She's an Air Nomad now. Why not give her a name like one?

Doyalistly, it's probably for easy recognition. True, a small change to Tania as mentioned or Tenya, a known Asian name, could work, but considering a baby was named Hope in otl, I don't find it that far out there.

Watsonianly, one could just point out how spiritual the Air Nomads are, and so when she was born, they just Felt that her name should be Tanya.

G: If you'll note, Tanya and Avi have already created an advanced airbending technique: gasbending. Which means they can selectively bend different gasses in different directions simultaneously.

Funny how when they first did that Tanya was thinking, "This could be used to help in mining." Only for war to happen, and they had to use it to kill dozens at a time. It's literally what happened with dynamite. History repeats.

Good news! Airbenders aren't generally raised by their parents anyway!

Can't be orphaned if your culture practices communal child-rearing.

You can do both. Be funny if camouflage (not just forest green, but also desert beige-brown and mountain snow white and gray) comes to be associated with the battle-hardened sect of Air Nomads. After all, you can't actually see the wind.

Come out of nowhere, hit hard and fast, take what you can, break what you can't, and leave without a trace. The fact they can approach via air means that, so long as no one sees where they came from or where they went, there's no way to really track them except to map their patterns, and even that can be avoided by zig-zagging up and down.

I wouldn't say "bloodthirsty" so much as generationally traumatized with a violent reaction towards threats. Plus, I could see a few old souls trying to hold on to their old traditions where they can. Not so much to go against the new grain that they need to survive, but just doing their level best to remember what they had. Almost like a mourning of the identity they lost, because circumstances demanded they step back from the incense and staffs and take up the sword and shield.

they probably won't even be vegetarians anymore when aang shows up.

To be fair, in a lot of cases, vegetarianism is a luxury. When you're out in the dead of winter in one of the coldest places people can live and have to stay there for potentially months to hide away from the Fire Nation fleet, there's barely going to be plants, let alone edible vegetables.

So yes, sorry penguin-seals, but it's just the circle of life.

After all, is the lion-bear evil for eating the antelope-squirrel?

Oh, I almost didn't realize that as well. Something like 99% of their current force is female, and even after picking up stragglers and survivors, they're not going to rebalance that very quickly at all.

So not only are they on the path to becoming sky pirate-esque, Not!Mongol raiders with a tragic cultural history and inherited PTSD, they're going to become Amazonian by necessity.

The preservation of their people requires them being careful with their last few men until they get another generation. We're looking at around 20 years of them fielding almost only women from their numbers alongside whoever they recruit from the Earth amd Water folks. That's going to solidify, culturally speaking.

Interesting premise having sect of monks who have ability to create chemic weapons and decompression, sounds really dangerous. They could control mustard gas, phosgene, sarin and be safe from usual danger of friendly-fire,war crime bending!

Tanya and her airbenders could always start off as mongol like raiders with the sky bison before transitioning into sky pirates when they have a new base of operations and the industry to build something akin to zeppelins.

With Tanya and her airbender using sky bison to help raid yu dao and other places the fire nation will put ballista in important locations to bring down the sky bison.

Tanya lived in the modern world and in the not!germany empire of her second life so she probably has some ideas on how zeppelins would work.

Tanya and her friend found a way to separate different components of air so The zeppelin a lighter than air craft could be kept afloat with helium or hydrogen that air benders separate from normal air. Nearly impossible to replicate by the fire nation with there current technology without air benders of there own.

Zeppelins would allow Tanya to increase her raids and attacks on the fire nation as they would let her carry off more loot captures from the fire nation or could be crewed by non benders or earth kingdom citizens that join Tanya's group while airbenders create the gas that keeps it afloat allowing Tanya to increase the amount of raids and attacks she does on fire nation depots and bases.

Though with the industry needed to create a zeppelin she would need to base herself in somewhere like gaoling or omashu.

they can take the zeppelins idea one step further and create sky cities using hydrogen or helium balloons. by create floating platforms to live on and grow their food while using moisture collectors to water their plants. they would still need to make trips to land to collect some soil and firewood while using air bending to also feed their plants with carbon dioxide. the biggest set back is creating a light enough material for the balloons.

"Tanya, do you have a plan? For longer than the immediate tasks you assigned the other survivors of the attack?"
This line is way too clinical for a young teen who should be freaking out at their first taste of live combat. Tanya can talk like that, other children (or even civilian adults), no.

Still, it's a decent opening effort. I look forward to where this goes.

All this talk about zeppelins makes me think of steampunk Airbender which is an image I did not know I want! could waterbenders learn how to bend steam?
Now that you mentioned steampunk I'm reminded of the mortal engines book series (and movie) and how airhaven would actually really suit air benders.

Not sure about the city but it could be used to a smaller decree for a mobile base

something like airhaven from mortal engines would allow Tanya to have a mobile base of operations that's practically untouchable by the fire nation.

The fire nation navy basically separted the fire nations main enemies of the earth kingdom, southern and northern water tribes from each other. With the mobile air base Tanya could launch attacks on the base of the southern raiders that's terrorised sokka and katara's tribe.

It could be used in different ways such as used as a base for going full sky pirate and attacking lone fire nation ships on the sea or merchant convoys on land to fully disrupt the fire nations logistics or even as a sort of trade hub as a way to move goods between earth kingdom cities using sky bison and zeppelin without fear of being attacked by the fire nation.

it would really suit a nomadic people with air based powers.

i like the story so far. i want tanya to change the air nomads from pacifist pussies about to get genocided to a normal country and live up to their potential lethality. can you imagine how deadly sound bending is?

but bruh! where da fuck are the adults. why the fuck are they letting a child take point in the defense of the air nation. and there should be more detractors to her violent plan if we are being realistic. i think you should feature more opinions from adults.

but other than that great job and please continue.

Aside from the possible chemical weapons and techniques that will be developed, how about air guns that fire bullets using compressed air? There was a rapid shot air gun used during the Napoleonic wars that a tubular magazine containing 30 bullets. Another weapons is metal containers with compressed air inside them being kept in place by Air Benders until they unleashed on groups of enemies. How about an air bending technique that can cause the bends to occur in a target in order to neutralize them?

thats probably true, wich makes me wonder why tanya is trying to steal industrial secrets, after all, not only is guerrila warfare incompatible with settling down to build industry, their first priority right now should be to secure a new home and food for the 700 CHILDREN that they have, which might i add, depending on their age, might not be able to read, let alone help in raiding a city and are bound to starve shortly unless they find/buy food.

My guess at her plans is that she's going to sell the tech she steals from the Fire Nation to the Earth Kingdom in exchange for them supporting the air benders

OMG, she's going to Starsector it. Sell the heavy equipment and technology you have to a friendly planet (city here) that can actually make use of it, then wait and buy the products they produce with them without having to build the infrastructure yourself.
