On a Pale Horse (Umamusume/Youjo Senki)

Well, I did it. It only took ten minutes of actual work to produce this evil. If something like this happens it's when Shirogane is recruiting for a post-school team of similarly intimidating frontrunners.

Pale Horse
Pale Horse
Pale Horse
Pale Horse

She rides across the nation
The icon of dismay
She got the application
That you sent her way

It needs evaluation
So let the race begin
A fall in mud, a show of force
A gate crash would be nice of course

Pale Horse
Pale Horse
Pale Horse
She's Death

The Team of Murder Runners
Is watching so beware
The grade that you receive
Will be your last we swear

So make the Pale Horse cheerful
And she'll make you her mare.

You're saddled up
There's no recourse
It's Hi-Ho Silver
Signed, Pale Horse

Is this a reference to Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog perchance?

The one gripe I have is that the first verse doesn't follow the expected rhyme scheme of AAABB, instead going AAXBB.

The original goes ABAB ABCC, and I'd already done the work of changing the first 2Bs and didn't want to figure out an -ay ending for a start of things. And since it's lyrics being able to match the cadence matters more imo. Especially since the second verse already breaks the pattern with line three being split.

Keeping it to the same tune means sacrifices must be made, and my time wasn't one I was willing to make.

So, a hobbit? Let's hope no one calls her that.
Gold Ship dressed as Gandalf and holding the sack stands in front of Shirogane and says now you are going on an adventure Bilbo.
Shirogane understands that reference and is very offended.
A moment later Gold Ship is on her butt choking and Shirogane is behind her, using the the sack as a improvised Garrote Wire

It's been a decade since I read the books, but shouldn't being called "Bilbo" either be a compliment or a little tease towards someone's height? And Shirogane is not going to be anything more than mildly, at most, disgruntled about being called short.

They responded before you made that edit

They were more referring to Shiro being "very offended", believing she'd, at worst, only be mildly offended
No? I just didn't bother quoting the whole of it. Shirogane's a much calmer person than Tanya, and even then Tanya wouldn't do that to a civilian, and furthermore even with Gold Ship trying to "kidnap" her, the way she was doing so wouldn't have merited violence.

It'd be something else if Gold Ship had actually succeeded in kidnapping Shirogane, but she hadn't and had just "ordered" her to enter the sack while dressing herself up as Gandalf and calling Shirogane Bilbo.

Violent overreaction definitely.

It is Gold Ship however, so I'm not sure it's an unacceptable overreaction, as both the kidnapping and the choking sound about right for things that horse would do, and thus both acceptable things to do to her. :V

EDIT: For that matter I'm not sure Gold Ship wouldn't actually respect that reaction either, which would be fucking hilarious wouldn't it, this pint sized polish war-uma matching the energy and thus earning the friendship of the horse who's jockey prayed he'd only be sane before each race. 🤣

Umamusume are indeed idols as much as they are racers and because gambling on their races is not legal
Is that canon? If it is, then its fucking stupid and probably written that way for moralistic reasons. The only reason horse racing gets the attention it does is because betting on them is one of the few legal forms of gambling in many countries, including Japan. If OP wants to make it so betting is allowed on uma musume races, I wouldn't blink, in fact I assumed it was the case to begin with.

It's probably more that the competitors cant gamble on themselves and their friends as it would count as insider trading and break those laws. Plus the winners do do that idol performance so that being the secondary career makes sense.

TBF, one of the draws of horse race gambling is the idea that horses aren't going to intentionally throw races to match fix, so there's some degree of greater purity. That probably holds somewhat true of umamusume, since most seem strongly disinclined to do that, but the gambling might very well end up being a smaller part of the draw in universe compared to irl.

Though in reality it likely had more to do with not getting the game a higher rating. As it is Umamusume has a weirdly high rating due to the gambling connotations.

Yes, it's canon - it was in the Q&A with the anime team. It may just be Japan that it is illegal in, to be clear, and it is likely that there are ways of getting around it like in some pachinko parlors where you can win a prize then go next door and sell (redeem) it for money - but yes, technically illegal.

As indicated, it's probably because the sport involves beautiful young women rather than horses and adult male jockeys - gambling does tend to introduce some nasty pressures and encourages the push to treat athletes as commodities rather than celebrities. To say nothing of religion...

All that is perfectly fine. It's the idea that uma musume racing would be as popular as its portrayed if the general public were not allowed to gamble on it, that I can't believe. Banning gambling on what has always traditionally been a betting sport will just drive it underground.

When you illegalize something immensely profitable, that's when the really nasty actors get involved.

If people think jockeys can't control how well a horse does, they're out of their minds.

Probably the true reason. Doesn't mean we have to accept such silliness when writing fanfic.

To make it clear to everyone, horse racing gambling is legal in IRL Japan. There's a reason why Gold Ship is known for the infamous 12 Billion Yen incident.

It's just that in the world of Umamusume, gambling in umaracing is illegal. Though considering Umamusume racing consists of both racing and the idol activities (that has merch and sponsorship deals) there's less of a need to rely on gambling as a main source of income thanks to the latter.

And the thing about Japan is that they really, REALLY love idols, for good or ill.

Yeah, the idols element is probably the main economic driver for umaracing. Buy your ticket to today's races at Hanshin, and included in the price is a seat at the Winning Live (so that's a sports event and concert, we can therefore assume that for umaracing the entry price is a bit more than your standard sports event ticket). Don't forget to pick up merch of your favourite Umas on your way out! And if you really liked the Live, in about a month's time it'll be available on Uma-ray disc for you to enjoy again at home.

OTOH, in Japan the pachinko loophole exists. For those unaware, only direct monetary reward is considered gambling. If the reward is a token or item that a "third party" is willing to buy from you for money, that's totally legit.
