A Spark of Potential
School Days

The way to Atlas Academy, if I had to describe it, was slow. Slow and silent, and in a tide of white and grays. Few people deviated from the dress code, and preferred to ride the airship in silence. I was hesitant myself to break it, even though as my father said, "Communication is the first step to making friends", when I asked about it.

Honestly this ride was lonely.

Back at the lab I had my father and his assistants to talk to, even General Ironwood always filled the silence when he dropped by; though his visits also correlated to Aura and combat practice. But that was what I originally was made to do, as well as be the first in line of the newer generation of android series; Atlesian Knights.

Except for whatever reason, I ended up different from them all. I had gained an Aura, something that was thought to be impossible for an android. My soon to father was so surprised at that time, as were the rest. They were all excited about the big breakthrough they just made with their research certainly. It was when they started to do tests that they realized I was fully sentient, but I do not blame them for that time.

I got a sweet father after all, and they all treated me like a person even though I wasn't a real girl.

Sometimes, when looking at the stars in the night sky, I wished I was... but that would mean I wouldn't have met my father, wouldn't it? So I was also glad that wish I made during the older days had never came to past. I was content with my life in the lab, but that was before I started learning more about the outside world. Reading books my father got so I could past the time, listening to stories from the general, and finally looking things up on my handy Scroll device that was packed with many apps for a variety of uses. I found out that I lived in a wondrous world, and I wanted to explore what it had to offer. But it was a world filled with danger.

The creatures Grimm, enemy of all life. The endless tide of darkness that threatens complete genocide on the ones born from dust. A never ending battle that always seemed to be one step forward and two steps back for those fighting it.

It was why instead of choosing to be a civilian, with the freedom to explore as I wished, I chose to fight. In order to protect the world I was born into. Which my father accepted my choice, though with a hint of what seemed to be melancholy, and made me a special weapon; poring all of his heart into it, I would never find a weapon better to use.

Though I had yet been able to come up with a name for it. As a gift that as made with so much love deserves one.

Especially since it allows me to perfectly fight at all ranges of combat.

I hoped a name would come to me during my time at Atlas Academy. Speaking of which, it would seem that the shuttle was preparing to land.

"Welcome to Atlas Academy young hunters, and please watch your step as you exit the vehicle." The door on the side slided open and the stairs were deployed automatically. "Have a nice day." The intercom dinged one last time as the sea of gray descended down the steps in an orderly manner. And so I followed with my head held high, and my backpack secured nicely on my back.

When I got down, I finally got my first look at Atlas Academy, my home for the next four years. It was a giant white fortress, built to withstand, just like humanity withstood the Grimm siege for all of their lives.

I smiled and walked toward the fortress. The headmaster would be giving a speech in the auditorium and it would be best not to be late.

Along the way you...

(OOC VOTE)

What would be Penny's primary color? Two are vetoed due to Penny's personality and well, what Penny is.

[]White
[]Blue
[]Red

Short chapter today to set the mood. Trying to get a good grasp of Penny's character while realizing there isn't much background for Penny so I needed to come up with stuff on my own and we really don't know much about what goes on Penny's head except that she apparently never had a friend until she met with Ruby, had someone hired to look out for her and keep her out of trouble, is socially awkward, and has a sweet father.

Anyway, what you missed out on for not choosing the new life option. I think people would what to know and I haven't updated the event history post yet with highlights of the beginning of Penny's life.

-six months of character development.
-character interactions with people at the lab and Penny's father.
-the choice of whether she would be a civilian or not.
-naming your weapon right when you got it. Though this will probably happen soon.

Anyway, the reasons why I vetoed two colors.

Green- Penny is an artificial lifeform and kinda clashes with the whole green thing. You may still learn how to use green mana though eventually, but it would be rather hard.

Black- Penny isn't a selfish amoral person that would do anything to achieve her goals. This had a chance to be a thing if you chose to play from the very beginning of her life though, creating a vastly different Penny. And with Green, you would eventually be able to learn how to use it as Penny is a Planeswalker, it just may be hard to do.

But don't feel bad about that. Personally, I am happy the school days won since the first option was just a long character development phase and the last option was skipping all of that and jumping right in the action.

School days was the middle ground. ^.^

Anyway, if I am not getting Penny's character right please tell me.

She desires friends and is exceedingly passionate. Red suits her.

I am thinking Weiss.

Btw, this vote will probably closed depending on how many votes I get. So probably somewhere between 3 days or 5 likely. I'm still weary about crossposting the quest to SV for a few reasons.

One being, it's easier to keep track of things on one site. ^.^

Dad would be disappointed if we slacked off so soon! We will listen to the rousing speech WITH ALL THE VIGOR WE CAN MUSTER!

For the record, Black has (on occasion) canonically manifested itself as a monomaniacal dedication to one's family and friends. Being willing to do anything to help prop up one's in-group, with little to no reflection as to whether they are in the right. It can also arise from insecurity in the self- looking inward and finding oneself lacking, then going all-out to correct the perceived deficiencies. I don't think for a second it would be Penny's primary color, but it's not as far-fetched as it sounds at first brush.

As for Green, Penny's internalization of the idea that she is not a real girl kills that path utterly for as long as it festers. A blue/green mix is comfortable with artificial life, but being at peace with the self and one's place in the world is absolutely central to Green. Until she can see herself as a fully real person (albeit one significantly different than her peers), even mixed Green is a lost cause.

Anyway, I will likely have an OOC vote next update to pick Penny's primary color. But I may veto 2 colors on the sense they don't really fit Penny all too well. Green, as she isn't part of nature, and Black as she isn't amoral and self serving from my understanding of her.

That doesn't mean I'm going to bar you from learning them eventually though.
Black isn't just amoral or self-serving, it can also mean fatalistic. (Sorin Markov is a thing after all.) Mind, Penny isn't very fatalistic what with planning to change the course of her life to attend Beacon, but on the other hand that was kind of selfish to abandon the country that created her to hang out with her friends.

She did seem kind of impulsive what with charging into a battle for a friend she'd made only yesterday, so that's a case for red, but her curiosity and later plotting makes a case for blue. Though it's really hard to tell whether either of those are core components of her personality, or just the result of her naivete. Her chafing against orders is a case against white, but her compassion and desire for friends is a case for it.

Eh, going with

[X]Blue

for it's interactions with artifacts, and because clever, plotting robots are fun. Copy Artifact becomes ridiculously broken in her hands, and Steal Artifact is OP in any modernish setting, especially Atlas.

True. I honestly need to brush up on MtG since I haven't really played it for years and have been mostly going by memory. I also need to look it up so I could put it on the lore post for the people who don't have the understanding of what each color represents.

...Same with what Aura is, and Grimm since Penny would know what those are by now.

The lore section would separate what Penny knows IC and what is known OOC if I ever get around to it.

...I'm going to take this opportunity to shamelessly plug the SB M:tG Story Ideas thread. We've amassed a respectable index of relevant articles and canon quotes to help with that sort of thing.

Incidentally, anyone have the automatic vote counter? Counting votes by hand gets tedious after awhile. I don't need the count right now, as the vote isn't anywhere near being closed yet. But I would just like to know.

Net tally doesn't work with the Linux OS I use because wine or something doesn't like it.

Reading the colour articles that page links to has driven me to a revelation, the Creatures of Grimm are straight up Green (however messing with them for personal gain is a very black action)

She's probably red/white (passion tempered by discipline) as she has far too much of an independent streak to be mono white

QQBot can do it over in the IRC.

Oh, and please remember that the personality affects the colors she can use and not the other way around. It doesn't work like that and it makes for poor stories.

I generally don't go to the IRC sadly. Anyway, I'll try to remember that, unless I already messed up?

I don't think Penny is a transformer.

Thanks for the catch.

I don't think the grim are natural though? Hm, something to think about at least. Already had them be black constructs made by someone else in the past in this quest I believe.

Between the whole anonymity thing, their tendency to grow continually until they are killed and the fact that their goto action when not killing Humans and Faunus is destroying technology, Green would be what i'd put them if i had to pick between the two

Think I finally decided on a world you guys will be able to go to that may be even more of a death world than renament because it's filled with psycho's, fiends and warring gods.

...Yeah, you may want to hold off going to that one a bit.

It's a final fantasy world sorta like a mismatch of all the ones that I know of basically in a dissidia fashion. Or I just may go with only one game. Meh, I have awhile before you guys get to unlock planeswalking anyway.

Gives me time to prepare at least instead of half ass things.

Incidentally, I know of many fandoms but I am having a bit of trouble deciding on them base on what would be entertaining, and potential rewards/risks without you guys becoming completely OP very fast.
