COMMENTS:

RWBYxMGEfan[archiveofourown]:
Luna could have said to Yang that having her was the best thing Raven ever did. Nevertheless, I thought this was pretty well done.

The whole fight between Clover, Qrow, and Tyrian never made any sense to me, unless its meant to be sort of a retelling of the parable about the scorpion and the fox. Betrayal is in his nature, etc. Regardless, teaming up with a homicidal maniac to fight your friend seems like a poor decision.

AVIP: Thanks for the kind words.

ThunderBasilisk[questionablequesting]: Damn what a conversation. And yet a much needed one to. Wonder if Yangs gonna draw any parallels with Blake if she runs off again?

AVIP: Perhaps a more serious conversation about how Yang is jealous of Blake, of how Blake parents love her unconditionally.

[Cinder]

Sitting in the cafeteria, I sigh tiredly once again as the seconds drag on.

Glynda Goodwitch.

The name echoes in my head like an irritating echo, a constant presence, impossible to ignore.

She has to know something, there's no other explanation. Why else would she make us do all these pointless extra activities?

The Headmistress claimed that Team CMEN had to make up for missed classes, which lacked proper justification, by putting in extra hours

Coming from the woman in charge of Haven Academy, that argument actually makes sense, and I would normally just be mildly annoyed at the waste of time…

'But that damn hag is just torturing us,' I think, grinding my teeth as I try to contain my fury.

We have extra classes until after dark from Monday to Saturday, leaving us with only one day to act, and even then, there's a curfew at 5 PM to keep us from skipping class Monday morning.

And every single second of those extra classes, Glynda Goodwitch is there, watching us like a hawk. And to add insult to injury, all the classes are about things like 'Damage Control', 'Ethics of Aura and Semblance Usage', 'Proper Huntsman Conduct with Civilians', 'Problem Solving Without Violence', 'Philosophy of the Greater Good'… all topics centered around some sort of morality.

My whole body shudders at the thought of the torture we endure in these subjects, and whatever else is still to co

I shake my head, trying to forget Goodwitch and focus on the peasant-level meal in front of me.

"French fries and chicken nuggets," I mutter, grumbling. "I thought this was an academy for the next defenders of humanity… not some damn daycare for spoiled brats with no taste."

Emerald, sitting next to me, nudges my arm.

"Ma'am, someone's been staring at you since you sat down."

Concerned, I look in the direction Emerald indicates. My body tenses, ready for any threat. But as soon as I see who's watching me, my body relaxes, his intentions as clear and harmless as my flavorless Jell-O.

Annoyed, I turn to Emerald.

"You seriously can't tell the difference between a spy on a stakeout and a dumb, lovesick teenager?"

Four tables away, a blond-haired kid with blue eyes and an unbuttoned white shirt is staring at me with way too much intensity. When he realizes I'm looking back, he raises both hands and makes fake finger guns at me, followed by a wink.

I roll my eyes and go back to my plate.

"Pathetic," I grumble, frustrated. "The last thing I need is to waste my precious time on a lovesick idiot."

"Maybe you should pay attention to him," Mercury says, drinking from his juice box.

I widen my eyes in shock and slowly turn to face the gray-haired idiot.

"Say that again," I whisper coldly, glaring at him.

"Well…" Mercury begins, swallowing nervously as he realizes how stupid his words sound. "Goodwitch is watching us for suspicious behavior, right?"

"Get to the point, or I'll shove a glass spear so far up your ass you'll actually taste it."

"Y-y-you c-could-." he stammers, but I cut him off.

"Stop stuttering, you useless idiot!" I snap, slamming my hand on the table. "Spit out your dumb idea before I scoop it out of your soft brain with a hot spoon."

His eyes go wide in terror, but he manages to speak.

"Normal students date in school," he blurts out, raising his hands in defense.

To everyone's surprise at the table, I don't attack him.

I sit still, thinking silently.

"Normal students date in school…" I repeat softly, almost a whisper. "I can't believe I'm saying this… but you're making sense, Mercury."

[Sun Wukong]

Sitting in the cafeteria with my team, I can't help but smile at that girl with the black hair and intense eyes.

"Dude! Did you see that? I think she just waved at me," I declared, feeling pumped. "She did! She waved at me!" I cheered, standing up.

Excited, I nudge Neptune with my elbow, nodding in her direction.

"See? Told you the finger guns would work."

Neptune rolls his eyes, chewing on a nugget.

"Even a broken clock is right twice a day, Sun."

I shrug with a confident grin on my face.

"You're just jealous."

Neptune chuckles, shaking his head.

"Jealous? Nah, I'm happy for my buddy makin' moves on a cutie," my brother from another mother says, waving his hand. "But seriously, that's the girl you're into?"

"What's wrong with her?" I ask, genuinely confused. "She's hot as fire, my man."

"She never talks to anyone outside her team, and she's got that crazy intense hot-girl vibe…" He glances at me, suddenly a little worried. "Like she'd cut someone just for looking at her wrong."

Arching an eyebrow, I look at her again, her amber eyes shining even from across the room.

"Her eyes are so pretty," I mutter, feeling all bubbly.

"She's staring at you like you're prey, dude," Neptune pleads. "Can't you pick another girl?"

"I dunno, man. There's just something about her…" I start, then drift off into my thoughts. "Maybe I just like girls with long black hair and golden eyes. Simple as that."

Neptune shrugs and goes back to focusing on his food.

"Whatever you say, Sun. Just don't come crying to me if she turns out to be a total psycho."

I smile, full of confidence.

"That's never gonna happen, bro. Trust me."

I look at her one more time, she's staring back at me with an even more intense gaze.

"Oh yeah. She's totally into me."

[Jaune]

I'm sitting in Professor Luna's class, chin resting on my hand, eyes glazed over as my thoughts drift. The professor's voice fades into the background, replaced by the echoes of clashing metal and the thud of hits landing on the arena. A smirk tugs at the corners of my mouth as I recall the hours spent pushing my limits, sweat dripping, muscles aching.

Each day, I feel it… the difference. My strikes are swifter, my blocks have better time. The extra training with Professor Luna and Pyrrha is paying off. I can see it in the way my body moves, feel it in the rhythm of my breath as I lunge and parry. The relentless drills, the endless sparring matches, they're all sculpting me into something more.

My gaze shifts to Pyrrha, seated a few rows ahead. Her posture is flawless, her focus unwavering. She's everything I strive to become… strong, skilled, confident. A warmth spreads through me, a mix of admiration and gratitude. She believes in me, sees something worth nurturing.

I straighten up, the smirk blossoming into a grin.

'I can do this,' I think to myself. 'I can face whatever challenges come my way.'

"Next fight!" the professor announced loudly, capturing everyone's attention. "Cardin Winchester versus Jaune Arc."

The name echoes through the room, and ice courses through my veins.

'I take back everything I was thinking... I'm not ready. I need more time.'

The room blurs, and my breath hitches.

A warm hand rests on my shoulder, firm and steady. A soft voice cuts through the haze of my self-doubt.

"Jaune," says a gentle feminine voice, "are you okay?"

I look up and see my partner. Her eyes, pools of emerald concern, search mine. She squeezes my shoulder, a silent reassurance.

"I can take your place if you're not feeling up to it," she offers, her voice barely above a whisper.

Her words kindle something within me.

'How can someone so amazing, care so much about me?' I think in silence. 'She believes in me, even when I don't believe in myself.' That thought sparks a fire in my chest, a determination that burns away the cold grip of fear.

I stand, my chair scraping loudly against the floor. The room comes back into focus, and I see Professor Luna watching me, his expression unreadable. I take a deep breath, Pyrrha's hand still on my shoulder, her presence a solid anchor.

"I'm ready," I declare, my voice steady and sure.

There's a murmur of surprise from my classmates, but I tune them out.

"Knew you had it in you." Pyrrha smiles at me, her eyes shining with pride. "Now go show them what you're made of."

I will do this to prove to everyone, and most of all to myself, that Pyrrha is not wasting her time with a cowardly loser.

Quickly, I slip into my armor, the cool metal a familiar comfort against my skin. Each piece clicks into place, a ritual that grounds me and prepares me for what's to come. I heft Crocea Mors, ready to fight.

I walk to the ring sprawled before me. Cardin stands across from me, a sneer twisting his lips. He rolls his shoulders, his massive mace held loosely in one hand, a cruel glint in his eyes.

"Thought you'd chicken out, Arc." His voice, a low rumble, carries across the space between us. "Guess even a loser like you has some spine."

I don't rise to the bait, don't let the anger show on my face. Instead, I plant my feet, square my shoulders, and meet his gaze dead-on.

"Let's get this over with."

The professor's voice booms through the arena, each word sharp and clear.

"This is a full-contact sparring match between Jaune Arc and Cardin Winchester. The conditions for defeat are as follows: ring out, aura depletion, surrender, or loss of consciousness. Do both contestants understand these conditions?"

Cardin grunts his affirmation, and I nod, my grip tightening on Crocea Mors. The cool metal grounds me, a stark contrast to the heat of adrenaline coursing through my veins.

Professor Luna steps back, his gaze sweeping over us both.

"Begin!"

His voice echoes, and then it's just Cardin and me, circling each other like predators. Cardin's sneer deepens, his eyes narrowing as he sizes me up. I keep my expression neutral, my focus honed to a razor's edge. I can't afford to underestimate him, not with Pyrrha watching.

Cardin charges, his battle cry echoing through the arena.

"Drop dead, Arc!" He launches into the air, his heavy mace arcing downward, a brutal force aimed at my skull.

Instinct kicks in. I thrust my shield up, angling it to meet his blow. Metal clangs against metal, the impact juddering through my bones.

CLANG!

His mace slides off as I angle my shield, momentum carrying it wide. Cardin's guard drops, his smugness replaced by a flicker of surprise.

I seize the moment. Stepping forward, I slam my shield into his face, putting my weight behind it.

BOOM!

The shield bash connects, and Cardin stumbles back, his Aura flickering from the impact. He shakes his head, taking a few steps back, dazed, then scowls.

"Lucky shot, Arc," he growls, raising his weapon.

Cheers erupt from the sidelines. I glance over to see Team RWBY on their feet, fists pumping the air. Nora's voice rings out above the rest, her enthusiasm infectious.

"Come on, fearless leader!" she cheers. "You got this!"

Ren sits beside her, his eyes never leaving the fight, calm and focused. Pyrrha, too, watches intently, her expression unreadable. Even in their silence I fell their support, a steady warmth in my chest.

Cardin circles me, his earlier cockiness replaced by a wary anger. He feints, testing my defenses. I hold my ground, shield ready, sword poised. I've trained for this, drilled the motions until they're second nature. I can do this.

"You don't stand a chance, Arc," Cardin mutters, more to himself than to me. He lunges, a quick jab with his mace. I deflect it, the clang of metal against metal ringing out.

Cardin presses forward, a flurry of strikes testing my defenses. His mace swings in tight arcs, jabs aimed at my ribs, my shoulders, my head. Each blow is met with a sharp clang as my shield intercepts, deflects, parries. He tries a kick, but it's too telegraphed, easily avoided.

I'm starting to see a rhythm to his attacks, a predictability that makes them almost lazy. I sidestep a clumsy swing, his mace whistling through empty air. He stumbles, off-balance, and I seize the opening. My shield slams into his back, sending him sprawling.

A thought stirs in the back of my mind, whispering insidiously.

'He's weak.'

I dismiss it, shaking my head as if I can physically dislodge the notion.

Our fight continues, and I keep deflecting Cardin attacks. I've drilled these motions countless times, sparred with partners far more skilled than Cardin. Pyrrha, with her fluid grace and lightning-fast strikes. Professor Luna, with his relentless, brutal efficiency. Compared to them, Cardin is...

'Slow,' I realize, the thought crystalizing in my mind. 'He's slow. He's clumsy. He truly is-.'

"Weak," I murmur, the word slipping out before I can stop it.

Confidence surges through me, an electric current igniting every nerve. I feel so alive, every sense heightened, every muscle coiled and ready. Cardin's eyes widen as he sees the change, his cocky smirk replaced by a wary scowl.

Crocea Mors flashes, a silver arc slicing through the air. Cardin jerks back, barely avoiding the strike. He grips his mace tighter, his knuckles white, as he swings it in a wide, powerful arc.

I duck under the blow, feeling the wind of its passage ruffle my hair. I straighten, driving my shield up and into his chin. His head snaps back, a grunt of pain escaping him. I press forward, my strikes coming fast and furious, each one fueled by a newfound aggression.

Cardin falters, surprise and desperation warring in his eyes. He blocks, parries, dodges, but I'm relentless, my strikes flowing like water, each one building on the last. I can see the strain in his eyes, the tension in his muscles as he struggles to keep up.

A wild swing, a desperate gamble. Cardin activates the Dust crystal in his mace, a brilliant flare of red light engulfing the weapon. He puts his all into the strike, a savage roar ripping from his throat.

"RAAAAARGH!"

Time slows. I see the strike coming, see the trajectory, the force behind it. I step into it, angling my shield, I hit his hand with the edge of my shield sending his mace spinning from his grasp. Cardin's eyes widen in shock, his mouth opening in a silent 'O'. I don't give him time to react. My sword arm whips around, Crocea Mors slicing through the air in a wide, powerful arc.

The blade connects, cutting across Cardin's chest. His Aura flares, a desperate attempt to absorb the blow. The force of the strike lifts him off his feet, sending him crashing to the ground outside the ring.

Silence falls, a stark contrast to the thunder of combat mere moments ago. All eyes are on Cardin, sprawled on the ground, his Aura flickering like a dying flame. Professor Luna steps forward, his voice echoing through the stunned arena.

"Ring out and Aura depletion. Cardin Winchester is defeated." Announces the professor. "Winner, Jaune Arc."

A cheer erupts from the sidelines, Team RWBY on their feet, fists pumping the air. Nora's voice rings out above the rest, her enthusiasm infectious.

"Thats my leader!" she cheers, her eyes shining with pride.

Ren nods, a small smile playing at the corners of his mouth. Pyrrha, too, watches me with a beautiful smile.

Professor Luna approaches me, his expression thoughtful.

"Good fight, Jaune. You've shown remarkable improvement," he says, his voice steady and calm. "But at the start, you seemed uncertain of your own abilities, and by the end, you let overconfidence get the better of you."

I nod, the adrenaline still coursing through my veins.

"I know, Professor. I won't let it happen again."

"See that you don't," he says, his eyes fixed on me, searching. "Overconfidence can be just as deadly as underestimating your opponent." He pauses before continuing, "You've barely lost any Aura, so you can still fight. I want you to face someone who'll teach you a bit of humility."

Before I can respond, he turns to the class.

"Yang Xiao Long." Announces the teacher.

Yang springs up, her chair scraping loudly against the floor. Her eyes gleam with an intensity that sends a shiver down my spine.

"What do you need, Professor?" she asks, her voice eager, almost hungry.

Professor Luna turns to her, his expression serious.

"Yang, I know Jaune is a close friend to you and Ruby. But I need you to fight him, giving it your all. He needs to learn a lesson."

Yang blinks, confusion flickering across her face for a moment. Then she turns to me, a cruel smile spreading across her lips.

"My pleasure," she purrs, her voice a low growl that makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

I swallow hard, gripping Crocea Mors tighter.

[Professor Luna]

Chaos erupts around me, a whirlwind of motion and noise.

"HARGH!" roared the blonde huntress, her red eyes blazing.

Yang's fists collide with my shield, each blow a thunderclap echoing through the arena.

BOM! BOM!

I pivot, dodging her third punch. Caught off guard, Yang stumbles forward, her strike swinging at nothing.

"O fuck." Mutters Yang.

"Language." I say kicking her back, sending Yang careening towards Jaune, who scrambles to avoid her.

Blake darts in, her shadow cloaking her movements, but I'm ready. I sidestep, bash her arm, and redirect her momentum with a kick, sending her crashing into Pyrrha.

"Enough!" My voice booms through the arena, freezing them all mid-motion. "The bare minimum of teamwork is to stay out of each other's way!"

Blake, sprawled on the ground, pushes herself up, her dark hair cascading over her shoulder.

"Whoa, so wise." Her voice drips with sarcasm, and her golden eyes meet mine, challenging.

I level her with a deadpan stare.

"Blake, you'll lead the next charge."

Her eyebrows shoot up.

"I'm a stealth combatant, not a tank." Complains the faunus cat girl "That is Yang's job."

"Diversify, Blake." I cross my arms, my voice firm. "You won't always have the luxury of sticking to one style. Adaptability is key."

"Fine." She mutters under her breath.

"Whoa, so wise of you to listen to me." I say with a smirk.

""Ha! Burn!" Laughs Yang. "Right in the whiskers."

"Teacher's pet," Blake mutters.

"Hey!" Yang snaps, her cheeks flushing.

I clap my hands, getting their attention.

"Alright, ladies and gentleman." I announce reading my sword and shield. "Let's get back to it. Blake, you're up."

After a few more rounds, the four students are on the floor panting.

I sheathe my sword, the metallic ring echoing through the now-silent arena. Four pairs of eyes watch me, breaths coming in ragged gasps. I scan each face, satisfaction warming my voice as I speak.

"You've all improved." My gaze lands on Jaune, chest heaving. "Jaune, your progress is is the most notable. You're learning to anticipate, to read your opponents better. But…" I raise a hand to halt his grin, "…your physical conditioning still needs some work. You're dead on your feet after just three sparring matches. I want you running more to build up your stamina."

He nods, swallowing hard, determination etched onto his sweat-streaked face.

I turn to Blake, her dark hair plastered to her forehead, golden eyes gleaming.

"Blake, your stealth work is exceptional. But as I said, you need to diversify. You can't always rely on the darkness to hide you."

Her lips quirk into a faint smirk.

As I turn to Yang her grin splits her face, wild and fierce. She's enjoyed this, the challenge, the thrill of battle.

"Yang, you've made a crucial shift. You're no longer controlled by your anger, but fueled by it. That's a powerful change and I'm proud of you for making it."

She beams, puffing out her chest.

"Teacher's pet." Blake whispers loudly.

Yang's grin only widens, undeterred.

"What can I say?" She shrugs, chuckling. "I 'yaim' to please."

Blake shudders at the bad pun as I turn to Pyrrha, her bright eyes meeting mine, as vise clamps around my chest. I swallow hard, forcing down the lump in my throat.

I can do this. I have to.

"Pyrrha." Her name catches on my tongue, but I push through. Stay professional. "You're an exceptional fighter. The best in this room, and arguably in all of Beacon."

Her eyes widen, surprise flickering across her face. I can see a question forming on her lips, the 'but' hanging in the air between us.

"But," I continue, steeling myself, "you fight like you're in a tournament."

Her brows furrow, a shadow passing over her expression.

"You need a different mindset," I explain, looking at the redhead. "Otherwise, one day you're going to end up getting hurt, or worse, your team will get hurt."

Yang's voice slips out in an accidentally loud whisper.

"Damn, no one's ever been that harsh to Cereal Girl before."

Blake stares at her, disappointed, shaking her head.

Pyrrha's eyes narrow, Yang's commentary rolling off her like water on stone.

"What do I need to do?" Her voice steady, her gaze locked onto mine.

I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what's to come.

"It won't be easy. You've spent years honing your skills for tournaments, for showmanship." I pause, letting the words sink in. "Basicaly you need to kill your Invincible Girl persona. You need to be reborn as a huntress."

Pyrrha freezes, eyes wide, as if I've slapped her. Jaune scrambles to his feet, indignation burning in his eyes.

"With all due respect, Professor, that's going too far!" His voice trembles, but he doesn't back down. "Pyrrha is incredible just the way she is! She doesn't need to change so drastically!"

I turn to him, a surprised smile tugging at my lips.

"This is unusual," I think, pride swelling in my chest though I keep it hidden. "Normally, I wouldn't have the courage to stand up to an authority figure like this, not with such certainty."

That's when it hit me.

'He's growing,' I realized. 'Faster than I was at his age. And the best part isn't just his improving strength, it's his morals, his character.'

"Jaune," I say, voice calm, "I'm not saying she's not amazing. I'm saying she needs to adapt. All of you do."

Silence hangs heavy, a thick cloak smothering the room. Four pairs of eyes stare at me, a mix of shock, anger, and confusion swirling in their depths. I meet each gaze, unwavering, waiting for the storm to break.

It's Yang who finally shatters the silence, her hand shooting up like an eager student in class.

"So, what do you recommend, Professor?"

I pause, considering, letting the seconds tick by as I formulate my response. An idea takes root, a seedling of a plan beginning to unfurl.

"I'll speak with Ozpin about doing some field trips." I say, voice decisive.

Blinks of confusion greet my words.

"Field trips?" The four say in unison.

"Some real-world experience is what you all need. Controlled environments, as an adult will be accompanying you, but unpredictable nonetheless."

[Pyrrha Nikos]

As soon as Professor Luna dismisses us Blake quickly slinks past me, her shoulder brushing mine. She pauses at the door, turning to Yang.

"Don't forget, Yang. You owe me one."

"Yeah, yeah." Answer Yang waving her hand dismissively. "One week of paid lunch."

"And desert." Adds Blake.

"Fiiine." Mutters Yang rolling her eyes.

When we left the room, away from the professor, I decided to ask.

"Hey, you two… have either of you noticed something different about the way Professor Luna talks to me? Or even looks at me?"

Jaune and Yang exchange confused glances. Jaune's eyebrows furrow, and he tilts his head slightly.

"Different?" Jaune asks, genuinely puzzled. "Different… how?"

I hesitate, trying to find the right words.

"I'm not sure exactly. It's just... he seems to talk so easily with everyone else, but with me, it's like he puts on this formal mask. And sometimes, I swear there's a hint of... pain in his voice."

Jaune's expression shifts from confusion to concern. He opens his mouth to speak but Yang beats him to it.

"Honestly, Pyrrha, I haven't noticed anything weird." Yang shrugs. "Maybe it's just you are not used to someone pushing you out of your comfort zone?"

"You know," I pause, considering her words. " I hadn't thought of that possibility. You might be right, Yang."

A grin spreads across Yang's face, her thumb jerking towards her chest.

"I'm always right."

Jaune steps closer, his brow furrowed in genuine concern. He reaches out, placing a firm yet gentle hand on my shoulder.

"I haven't noticed anything either, Pyrrha, but I promise I'll pay closer attention to Professor Luna from now on."

His touch is warm, reassuring. I nod, grateful for his support.

"Thanks, Jaune. I appreciate it."

Jaune's hand lingers on my shoulder. The warmth of his touch radiates through me, igniting a spark that sets my heart aflutter. I look into his eyes, seeing a confidence that wasn't there before.

It suits him, makes him more... handsome. He's always been cute, but now, there's an edge to him, a strength that draws me in.

His lips curl into a soft smile, and I can't help but mirror it.

This is what I've been longing for so long, a true connection that goes beyond my fame, beyond the invincible girl everyone sees on the screens. Jaune sees me, the real me, and he's still here, still caring.

My heart swells with joy, a bubbly happiness rising within me. I want to lean into his touch, to close the gap between us, to feel his arms wrap around me. I want to-.

"Ahem!" Yang clears her throat, loud and exaggerated. "Get a room, you two."

Heat rushes to my cheeks as I step back, Jaune's hand falling from my shoulder. I tuck a strand of hair behind my ear, avoiding Yang's teasing gaze. Jaune, on the other hand, just chuckles, rubbing the back of his neck.

"Yeah, sorry, Yang."

She grins, waggling her eyebrows.

"It's fine," says Yang, elbowing Jaune's side. "Better make it official soon, vomit boy, I doubt you'll ever land someone better."

"Yang!" I shout embarrassed.

With a cheeky grin on his lips, Jaune respondes.

"Of course it's impossible to land someone better," he says confidently. "Pyrrha is the best."

My eyes widen, face flushing a shade redder than my hair. I stammer, trying to form a coherent response.

"I-I mean, we're not… we haven't-."

Yang laughs, a loud, hearty sound that echoes through the hallway. She slaps Jaune on the back, grinning wide.

"You know, Jaune, I gotta hand it to you. You're smoother than I thought."

"Thanks, I guess?" Jaune chuckles, shaking his head.

Yang waves goodbye, laughing as she disappears around the corner. I watch her go, my heart pounding in my chest. As soon as she's out of sight, I turn to Jaune, my voice barely above a whisper.

"Jaune, were you serious? Or were you just playing along with Yang's teasing?"

Jaune sighs, running a hand through his hair before turning to face me. He scratches the back of his neck, a sheepish smile playing on his lips.

"Pyrrha, when I came to Beacon, it was because I had this dream of becoming a hero. I knew it was almost impossible, but I wanted to give my best, even if it was the hardest thing I'd ever try."

He pauses, his eyes meeting mine. There's a sincerity in his gaze that makes my heart flutter.

"But then I met you," he continues. "And I realized that finding someone like you was even more impossible."

My throat tightens, emotions welling up inside me.

"What do you mean, Jaune?"

He takes a deep breath, his voice steady and sure.

"When I'm with you, Pyrrha, I feel better, and it makes me want to be better. I want to be the very best, like no one ever was… just to be worthy of standing next to you."

My eyes widen, surprise and joy intertwining within me.

"Jaune, you don't have to do that. You don't have to be anyone but yourself."

His smile broadens, his eyes sparkling with an intensity that takes my breath away.

"That's another reason I like you so much, Pyrrha."

Jaune's words hang in the air, a confession that sends my heart into a fluttering frenzy. My mouth opens, closes, opens again, but no words come out. I'm frozen, stunned by the raw sincerity in his voice, the intense gaze in his eyes.

Jaune shifts his weight, his confidence waning as he is forced to face my silence. His eyes cast downwards, and I'm certain he can hear my heartbeat.

"I-I understand if you don't feel the same way, Pyrrha. I just... I had to tell you."

His voice is soft, tinged with a sadness that snaps me out of my stupor. He starts to turn away, but I reach out, my hand grasping his arm. He looks back at me, surprise flickering in his eyes.

"Jaune, wait."

He pauses, his gaze meeting mine. There's a vulnerability in his eyes, a raw honesty that makes my heart ache. I've seen this look before, in the arena, when he stood up for me, when he faced his fears. It's the look of someone ready to face rejection, ready to accept defeat, but still hoping for a miracle.

"I... I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable, Pyrrha. I just wanted to be honest with you-."

I pull Jaune towards me, my heart pounding like a drum in my chest. His eyes widen in surprise, but he doesn't resist. I rise up on my tiptoes, my lips pressing against his. He's tense for a moment, frozen in shock. But then, he relaxes, his arms wrapping around me as he kisses me back.

The world around us fades away. It's just Jaune and me, lost in this moment, this perfect, beautiful moment. His lips are soft, gentle, yet fierce with an undercurrent of passion. My heart flutters, my knees weaken, but Jaune holds me tight, keeps me steady.

When we finally pull apart, Jaune's breath is ragged, his cheeks flushed. He looks into my eyes, his own filled with wonder and disbelief.

"Does... does that mean...?" he stammers, his voice barely above a whisper.

I laugh, a soft, joyous sound that echoes through the hallway. I snuggle closer, my head resting against his chest. His heart beats steadily, a rhythm that calms and exhilarates me all at once.

"Yes, Jaune," I say, my voice teasing. "It means we're dating."

[Professor Luna]

The Bullhead's engines roar, a deep, throbbing hum that echoes through the valley. The airship descends, its metallic belly glinting in the sunlight. Below, a vast field of wildflowers sway in the breeze, a vibrant carpet of red, yellow, and blue that stretches towards the distant tree line.

Beyond the field lies a small village, a cluster of timber houses surrounded by a palisade wall that on a good day might defend the local population from a small pack of beowolves.

The aircraft door opens and I leap from the Bullhead, I fall with the wind howling past my ears. My shield is up, my eyes scanning the horizon. The wildflowers below form a colorful blur, their sweet scent filling the air. I hit the ground, knees bent to absorb the impact, and I quickly straightened up.

Looking around I don't see any threats nearby. The valley is quiet, too quiet. No birdsong, no rustle of wildlife in the underbrush. Just the wind and the distant hum of the Bullhead's engines. I tense, my grip tightening on my shield.

"I have a bad feeling about this." I whisper to myself.

I raise my arm, hand slicing through the air in an exaggerated sign.

The pilot flickers the ship's landing lights as the Bullhead's engines shift from a roar to a steady hum. The airship descends and touches down slowly, petals swirling in the downdraft.

A moment later, the students of teams RWBY, JNPR, and CRDL emerge, their voices a chorus of laughter and excitement, except for Jaune Arc. My younger version is busy trying not to throw up.

"Get out of the way." He shouts pushing Cardin, running to puke next to a tree.

"For fuck's sake, Arc!" the ginger snaps, irritation clear in his voice. "Can't you keep your damn breakfast down?"

"Better than him puking on the bullhead." Weiss says with a tired sigh.

"Or in your shoes." adds Ruby trembling with a bad memory.

The students wrinkle their noses, a few retching at the sight of Jaune.

Pyrrha is next to him patting his back as Yang claps him on the shoulder, a broad grin on her face.

"Good job, vomit boy," she chuckles. "You didn't puke on my boots this time."

"Thanks, Yang. " Jaune says, wiping his mouth, straightening up. "I think..."

I need to teach Jaune how to meditate using Aura circulation to combat motion sickness. It'll save him a lot of embarrassment in the future.

"Alright, listen up," I call out, voice sharp.

The chatter dies down, as all eyes focus on me.

"Our mission," I begin, voice steady and serious, "is twofold: protection and extermination. We're here to keep the Grimm at bay and eliminate any that pose a threat." I pause, letting my words sink in. "Your primary objective is to stay alive. Civilian lives are secondary to your own."

Murmurs ripple through the group. Nora's hand shoots up, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.

"Shouldn't civilian lives be our top priority? Isn't that what Huntsmen and Huntresses are supposed to do?"

All eyes turn back to me, awaiting my response.

"In a conventional mission, yes, you'd be correct, Nora," I acknowledge. "But this isn't a conventional mission. You're not Huntsmen and Huntresses, yet. You're students, and as your professor, nothing is more important to me than the lives of each and every one of you twelve.

Nora's eyebrows shoot up.

"Whoa.. even Cardin's life is important?" she asks, a sarcastic edge to her voice.

Cardin's face reddens, his irritation boiling over.

"Shut up, Valkyrie," he snaps, but I silence him with a sharp look.

"Every single one of you is valuable." I hold their gaze, my tone hard as stone. "You are the future of Remnant. If it's the last thing I do, I will keep you alive to see that future come to pass."

The intensity of my words catches them off guard. They stare at me, surprise etched on their faces.

"Today is different from what you are used to." I say approaching them with heavy steps. "This isn't a game. It's not just training or another class. This is real life, with real consequences. You'll get hurt or worse if you don't take this seriously."

"Hmph!" Cardin snorts, crossing his arms. "Drama queen much."

I turn around and locking eyes with CRDL leader, who widens his eyes as I approach.

"S-Sorry, I didnt-." He stutters but I cut him, raising my voice.

"No, you didn't!" I snap, glaring at him. "If you don't take me seriously you can die, or worse someone on your team could. Is that what you want, Cardin? Have the death of a teammate on your conscience for the rest of your LIFE!" I shout the last part without meaning to.

Cardin swallows hard, the cockiness draining from his face.

"No, sir. I don't want that."

I sigh, the weight of my past mistakes pressing down on me.

"Good." I say it in a gentler tone. "Because I carry the weight of a fallen partner, and I don't wish that burden on anyone."

The students shift uncomfortably, the gravity of my words sinking in. I scan their faces, seeing a mix of determination and apprehension. I simile noticing that they are starting to understand the stakes.

"Now, let's move out." I gesture towards the village, my voice brisk.

The teams nod, falling into formation as we make our way.

[Jaune Arc]

With the heavy and serious mood that Professor Luna established, we march towards the village, the crunch of dirt on the road under our boots the only sound breaking the tense silence. I glance at my team, their faces a mix of nervousness and determination. The other teams, RWBY and CRDL, mirror our expressions.

Whispers start to ripple through the group. Nora leans in, a mischievous grin tugging at her lips.

"I think Cardin pissed himself back there." She chuckles, eyes sparkling with amusement.

Ruby, walking beside her, nods.

"Not gonna lie, I was a bit scared too." Ruby admits, her voice soft. "There was something about Professor Luna just now. It was like seeing a completely different person."

Yang, overhearing, chimes in.

"I kind of like it," She smirks. "Seeing him all intense and imposing like that was… kinda a turn-on."

Ahead of us, Blake shakes her head, a small smile playing on her lips.

"Who would have thought," She teases. "Yang Xiao Long is a-."

"Don't say it, Blake." Yang warns, but it's too late.

"Sub." Blake finishes, a laugh escaping her.

Yang groans, rubbing a hand over her face.

"What's a sub?" Ruby asks, confused.

"It's like a fan." Yang snaps, trying to protect Ruby's innocence."

"So Blakes is saying…" Ruby starts making Yang sweat cold. "Yang is a fan aaaand… would be a subscriber of professor Luna?"

"Yes!" Yang cries out in despair. "You got one in, sis. Nice job."

Ruby lifts her chin proudly, while Blake smirks, shaking her head.

"Maybe a subscriber of his onlyf-."

"BLAKE!" Yang shouts furiously at her partner.

The rest of us can't help but join in, our laughter echoing through the valley. The tension from earlier begins to ease, our shoulders relaxing. It's a needed moment of levity before whatever awaits us in the village.

Our laughter fades, the echoes dying away as we continue our march. I clear my throat, my voice steady as I speak up.

"I've seen that side of Professor Luna before." I admit, glancing at the others. "He can be pretty intense when he wants to be."

Pyrrha turns to me, her eyes searching.

"Has he always been like this with you, Jaune?" She asks, her voice laced with concern. "In your private lessons?"

I shift uncomfortably, rubbing a hand along the back of my neck.

"Yeah, especially at the first lessons with him." I confess, offering her a small smile. "He was pretty tough on me. Said he needed to break me down to build me back up."

Pyrrha's expression darkens, her voice firm.

"That's not teaching, Jaune." She insists. "That's abuse."

I chuckle, the sound lacking any real humor.

"It was intense," I agree, my mind flashing back to those early days of training. "But it was what I needed. He changed my way of thinking about my life at Beacon, made me stronger. I'm almost grateful for it."

"Almost?" Pyrrha repeats, her brows furrow, disapproval clear in her eyes.

She opens her mouth to respond, but before she can, Professor Luna's voice cuts through our conversation.

"We're here." He announces.

We fall silent, our focus shifting to the village ahead. The houses are small, rundown, what once was vibrant colors are now faded and chipped. The streets are eerily quiet, not a soul in sight. A chill runs down my spine, the hairs on the back of my neck standing on end.

Professor Luna steps forward, he sweeps his gaze over the village, eyes sharp and alert. Cupping his hands around his mouth, he calls out, his voice booming like thunder.

"We are huntsmen from Beacon Academy." His words echo through the streets, hanging in the air. "We're here to exterminate the creatures of grimm threatening your homes."

At first, nothing happens. The village remains as still and silent as it was before. But then, slowly, things begin to change.

Curtains twitch in the windows, fingers pulling back the fabric just enough to peek out at us. Eyes, wide and frightened, stare at our group, taking in our weapons and our stance.

I shift, uncomfortable under their gazes. I want to say something, to reassure them that we are here to help, but before I can, a door creaks open. An old man steps out, his back hunched with age. His head is bald, but his beard, long and white, more than makes up for it, flowing down to his chest. He leans heavily on a cane, his steps slow but steady as he makes his way towards us.

"I am Vernon," he introduces, his voice raspy but strong. "The leader of this village. Who might you be?"

Professor Luna steps forward, offering his hand.

"Professor John Luna," he replies, his voice firm. "These are my students, here to assist in the mission."

Vernon's eyes narrow as he sweeps over our group again, a sneer tugging at his lips.

"Students, you say?" he scoffs, voice dripping with disdain. "Hmph. Are you sure this lot can handle Grimm?"

Vernon's words sting some of us, a harsh judgment that hangs heavy in the air.

I blink unaffected by his words, as I've heard worse, and sadly felt worse.

But around me, the atmosphere shifts, tensions rising like a thermometer in the summer heat. Yang's fists clench, knuckles white, her jaw set in a hard line. Beside her, Nora bristles, eyes flashing with indignation. Cardin is the worst of us, he looks ready to knock Vernon's teeth out.

I watch as Professor Luna steps forward, his movements calm, deliberate. He extends once again his hand to Vernon in silence, refusing to answer before the old man shakes his hand.

The old man finally recognizes the teacher's authority as he grasps Professor Luna's hand, his grip firm despite his aged appearance. A smug smile tugs at Vernon's lips, like he's already won some unspoken battle. But Professor Luna doesn't flinch, his expression steady as he introduces himself.

"AS I said before, I am Professor John Luna," he states, his tone respectful yet firm. "And you are correct. My students are young and inexperienced, they are still learning. But they are also some of the most promising huntsmen and huntresses in training from Beacon Academy. They are the future protectors of Vale, the guardians of humanity."

Vernon's smile fades, his eyes widening in surprise. He hadn't expected that, the pride in Professor Luna's voice, the unwavering belief in us. Beside me, Yang stands taller, her chest puffing out slightly. Nora grins, her eyes gleaming with renewed determination.

"They will treat you with respect," Professor Luna says, his voice low and unwavering. "And I expect nothing less from you in return. These students are risking their lives for this village, disregard that, and you will answer to me."

Vernon's mouth opens, closes, then opens again, like a fish out of water. He's at a loss for words, his earlier disdain replaced with a begrudging respect as he swallows hard. Vernon nods, his gaze sweeping over us, seeing us in a new light.

"Very well, Professor Luna," he says, his voice gruff but respectful. "Welcome to our village. We are grateful for your help."

Professor Luna nods, continuing to speak in a formal tone like a sales man closing a deal.

"As they are students, you are providing a service by offering them this opportunity to experience the real world. Your village will not need to pay protection tax to the Vale government for the next six months."

Vernon's face lights up with a smile.

"Six months?" he echoes, disbelief heavy in his voice.

Professor Luna nods, his expression serious.

"That's correct," he confirms. "But we will require food and lodging for the duration of our stay."

Vernon blinks, taken aback. He glances at our group, his gaze sweeping over the sheer number of us. A frown tugs at his lips, worry lines creasing his forehead.

"That's... a lot of mouths to feed," he mutters, more to himself than to us. He sighs, rubbing a hand over his face. "This is a small village, Professor. We don't have much in the way of extra supplies."

Professor Luna doesn't blink, his expression unyielding.

"I understand your concern," he says calmly. "But think about it: just one month of tax savings will be enough to feed a group bigger than ours for a whole week."

Vernon's eyebrows shoot up, surprise flashing in his eyes. He opens his mouth, closes it, then opens it again, struggling for words.

"A m-month?" he stammers, shock evident in his voice. "How would you know that?"

Professor Luna nods, his gaze unwavering.

"I used to live in a village a little bigger than this, so I have an idea," he confirms. "And that's just the first month. You'll be saving six months' worth of payments. Surely, you can find a way to accommodate us with that in mind."

Vernon sighs, defeated. He nods, resignation in his eyes.

"Very well, Professor," he concedes, his voice gruff. "We'll find a way to make it work. Follow me, I'll show you to your lodgings."

[Weiss Schnee]

Turns out that our 'lodging' is the communal wood storage that looms before us, a sprawling, rustic structure. The scent of dust and aging wood, a stark contrast to the comforts of my home.

"This is it?" Yang mutters, her voice laced with disbelief. She kicks at a stray log, sending it tumbling across the dirt floor. "It's a bit... rustic, isn't it?"

I cast her a sideways glance, a silent reprimand. I step inside, my boots echoing on the wooden floor. The interior is vast, filled with towering piles of lumber, the air thick with sawdust.

"It's not ideal," I admit, my voice steady. "But it's what we have. We'll make do."

Ruby, ever the optimist, grins, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

"It's like camping!" she exclaims, her voice filled with wonder. "We can tell stories, roast marshmallows..."

Blake raises an eyebrow, a smirk playing at her lips.

"Lets not make a fire inside the house where they stock wood... please." she teases.

Ruby's grin vanishes.

"Sorry" she whisper ashamedly.

I sigh, brushing dust from my shoulders.

"This place is a mess. I can't believe we're supposed to sleep here."

Jaune gets our attention by clearing his throat, preparing to speak.

"While Professor Luna is out with team CRDL, we could take turns patrolling the village at night."

Yang raises an eyebrow.

"Why bother?"She questions curiously. "Luna said to wait for his return."

"He said to wait for him in the village," Jaune clarifies, his voice firm. "He didn't say we should sit around doing nothing."

Ruby jumps to her feet, eyes gleaming.

"I want to help too!"

"You wanna do anything that isn't staying put..." Yang chuckles. "You hate being still."

Lie Ren, who has been silently observing, speaks up.

"Jaune has a point. Most of the village is suspicious of a large group like ours. Their negative feelings it's bound to attract Grimm."

Blake nods, her expression thoughtful.

"A Grimm attack during the night is almost certain."

"So, what's the plan?" I ask looking at Jaune. "We walk around the village hoping to encounter Grimm before they attack civilians?"

Jaune shakes his head.

"Not just walk around. We patrol in pairs. If we encounter any Grimm, we take them out quietly, without drawing too much attention."

Yang cracks her knuckles, a wicked grin spreading across her face.

"Quietly, huh? Not sure I can promise that, but I'm game."

Ruby bounces on her toes, eager.

"Shall we go with our partners? Or shall we mix it up like one of Professor Luna's classes."

"No," I say, thoughtful. "Professor Luna does disruptive training with us so we can adapt to the worst on the field. But this isn't training; it's interesting to attack the problem with someone we're already most familiar with."

Ruby crashes into my side, hugging me, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

"Me and my bestie are first!"

I sigh, exhaustion seeping into my voice.

"Of course… fearless leader."

"Hey!" Shouts Nora, annoyed. "Thats my line."

"You can share it." Says Ren putting a hand on his partner's shoulder.

"Let's go Rose." I grumble pulling my partner out. "Surely no Grimm will be more challenging than spending a night in this dusty shed."

[Point of view: Weiss Schnee]

Our steps echo softly through the quiet village street. Ruby's cloak drifts behind her, catching the pale moonlight. I glance at her side, silver eyes scanning the surroundings with alert focus.

I remember at the first time I met my leader, once, her eager antics used to irritate me, stoking my frustration. I craved perfection, precision, control. I wanted to be the leader, to be the unwavering beacon of competence amid the chaos of ineptitude. But Beacon has a way of testing your perceptions, of forcing you to look beyond the narrow confines of your own desires.

Now, Ruby's growth is clear in her confident stride. I no longer see her as a reckless, eager girl. While I may not voice it, there's pride in having her as my partner, in us, in how far we've come.

The village feels worlds apart from the bustling cities I know. Yet there is a quiet charm to its simplicity. The houses, rustic and weathered, are carefully maintained. The streets are clean, the air crisp and fresh. It lacks Atlas's opulence, but there is beauty here all the same.

"Sooo…" Starts Ruby getting my attention. "Wanna talk?"

I narrow my eyes, suspicious as I glance at Ruby, she's grinning, that cheeky, lopsided grin she wears when she's up to something.

"What exactly do you want to talk about, Ruby?" I ask, my voice measured.

Ruby's grin widens, her eyes sparkling with mischief.

"Oh, you know, just about that 'massive crush' you have on Professor Luna."

Heat rushes to my cheeks, my face burning with embarrassment.

"I-I do not have a crush," I stammer, my words tripping over themselves. "I merely respect and admire him as an educator and professional Huntsman."

Ruby laughs, a soft, teasing sound.

"Respect and admire?" she repeats sarcastically. "Weiss, you light up like a glow stick whenever he's around. If I've noticed, then it's clear to everyone… I mean, everyone but you."

I bristle, turning my gaze straight ahead, trying to hide my flustered expression.

"You're imagining things, Ruby. Even if I did, it wouldn't matter. He's a professor, and I am a student. It would be inappropriate."

Ruby's eyes sparkle with that familiar glow, the one she gets when she's lost in one of her fantasies.

"Come on, Weiss, it's so romantic! The forbidden love between a student and teacher. It's like something straight out of 'Ninjas of Love'."

I stare at her, bewildered.

"Ninjas of Love?" I repeat, surprised. "Ruby… have you been reading Blake's books?"

Ruby's cheeks flush a deep red, visible even in the dim moonlight. She stammers, tripping over her words.

"I-I was just... I ran out of comics, and I didn't have anything else, and Blake said her stuff was good, so I thought, why not?"

A smug smile tugs at my lips as I point my finger at the reaper.

"So, you like reading 'filthy'."

"Giah!" Ruby yelps, tugging her red hood to hide her flushed face.

I laugh, relief washing over me. Despite her growth, Ruby's still the same girl at her core.

But our little banter is cut short by the sound of footsteps. I signal Ruby, and we both turn towards the approaching sound.

"O my," I whisper, coming to a halt.

It's a small girl, maybe around six or seven. She's dressed in simple clothes, a worn-out dress, scuffed shoes, and a tattered scarf wrapped around her neck.

The girl steps closer, her eyes wide with curiosity and a hint of fear. As she gets closer, I notice the sharp angles of her cheeks, the hollows beneath her eyes.

She's far too thin, her clothes hanging loosely on her small frame. A pang of sympathy hits me. I've seen poverty before, but always from a distance, behind the safety of a glass window or the tinted glass of a scroll.

But never like this, never close enough to see the gaunt shadows on a starving child's face.

"Are you here to help us?" she asks, her voice soft, barely above a whisper.

I freeze, her words wrapping around my heart, squeezing tight. My throat constricts, choking off any response.

Ruby, thankfully, has no such problem. She steps forward, kneeling down so she's eye level with the girl.

"Yes." Her voice is soft and gentle. "We're definitely here to help. What's your name?"

The girl's eyes widen, a small smile tugging at her lips.

"I'm Lily," she says, her voice gaining a touch of strength, a spark of hope.

Ruby grins as her left hand reaches for the pouch strapped to her belt.

I watch curiously, an eyebrow quirked, as Ruby rummages through her pouch. She pulls out a small, slightly crumpled paper bag, holding it out to Lily. The girl takes it, her tiny hands trembling as she opens the bag with caution.

Her eyes widen staring at the bag's contents, her face lighting up with pure joy.

"Cookies!" she squeals, her voice echoing through the quiet street.

She takes one out, biting into it with gusto. Crumbs tumble down her chin, her eyes close as she savors the treat.

Her happiness is so intense that I'm taken by surprise when she starts crying, fat tears rolling down her cheeks, mixing with the crumbs.

"T-Thank y-you," she sobs, her voice choking, thick with emotion. "I w-was so hungry."

Ruby stands, grinning, her eyes reflecting the girl's happiness. Lily takes another cookie from the bag, holding it out to Ruby.

"Want one?" she asks, her voice still choked with tears.

Ruby shakes her head, her grin softening into a warm smile.

"No, thank you," she says. "I don't really like cookies. But I'm glad I found someone who does."

Lily wraps her tiny arms around Ruby's leg, squeezing tight.

"Thank you," she murmurs again, her voice muffled against Ruby's leg. Then, with a final wave, she darts off, disappearing into the darkness.

Ruby watches her go, a soft sigh escaping her lips. She turns to me, her smile fading, eyes reflecting the moonlight.

I frown, glancing in the direction Lily disappeared.

"Ruby, why was that girl in such a horrid state? She was so... thin."

Ruby's expression darkens, her jaw setting in a grim line.

"A lot of factors, but you can sum it up as the Grimm fault," she says, her voice flat and serious. "When they start attacking an area without any defense, people flee their homes, their farms, seeking refuge in walled villages like this one. Hunters and gatherers can't go out to find food, so they're left to starve and whiter away, hoping help arrives before they..."

She trails off, but I understand her meaning. A shudder runs through me, the reality of our world crashing down.

This is too real, too raw, makes me understand why some people resent me for the sheltered life I've led.

Ruby's eyes meet mine, her gaze steady, resolved.

"But that's why we're here, Weiss. To help, to protect. To make a difference."

Her words strike a chord within me, resonating deep. I nod, determination coursing through my veins.

"You're right," I say, my voice firm. "We'll do everything we can to help these people."

[Point of view: Professor Luna]

I lurk in the shadows, eyes locked onto the chaotic dance of combat before me.

The beowolves silhouettes circle their targets, their growls a chorus of primal fury. CRDL's scattered across the clearing, each fighting their own battle.

Cardin's a whirlwind, his mace crushing skulls with brutal efficiency. But his back's exposed, his teammates too focused on their own fights. A Beowolf lunges, fangs slice Aura. He howls, more in surprise than pain.

"Argh!"

"Cardin!" Dove shouts, his voice barely audible over the snarls and grunts. He's pinned down, dual blades locked against a Beowolf's jaws.

Russel and Sky are back-to-back, but their coordination's off, movements disjointed.

I could step in, end this swiftly. But they need this, the struggle, the lesson. So I stay hidden, just observing.

Cardin crushes the skull of his tormentor and falls on one knee, breath ragged. He scans the field, eyes wild.

"Where's my backup?" he roars.

Russel risks a glance his way, his pistol blasting light.

"Busy, Cardin! Just like you should be!"

Cardin grits his teeth, drives his mace into the ground, and pushes himself up.

The fight drags on, minutes feeling like hours. Steel clashes with claws, Aura flares against fangs. But eventually, the beowolves fall, one by one, until the only sounds are the ragged breaths of CRDL and the distant hum of the wilderness.

I step from the shadows, boots crunching on the gravelly dirt. Four pairs of eyes, weary but alert, track my approach.

"Professor Luna," Cardin acknowledges, straightening up, mace still gripped tightly in his hand.

I look over each of them. Their Auras may be unshattered, but they're all in the red, and their bodies clearly exhausted.

"What did you learn?" I ask in a stern tone.

Cardin's chest heaves, but he manages to lift his chin, pride etched onto his sweat-streaked face.

"We won," he pants. "That's what matters."

I raise an eyebrow, waiting. When he doesn't elaborate, I turn to the others.

"Dove?"

Dove glances at Cardin, then back at me.

"We...we could've done better. Communication was...lacking."

I nod, turning to Russel and Sky.

"And you two?"

Russel sheathes his weapons , running a hand through his hair.

"We weren't coordinated. Too focused on our own fights."

Sky nods in agreement, wiping sweat from his cheek.

"We need to watch each other's backs more. Be a team, not just four lone fighters."

I take a deep breath, weariness seeping into my bones as I turn back to Cardin. There's a hope, a small one, that he'll prove me wrong, that he'll show some growth. But he stands there, chin lifted, pride intact, oblivious to the pleas of his teammates.

"Cardin," I start, voice steady despite my frustration. "What would you do next? If CRDL were out on this mission alone?"

He blinks, confusion flickering across his face for a second. But it vanishes as quickly as it comes, replaced by that familiar stubbornness.

"We'd go back to the village, to rest, duh!"

I shake my head, disappointment heavy in my chest.

"And your Aura levels? What are they at?"

There's a shuffle of feet, a few glances exchanged. Then, one by one, they report.

"Fourteen percent, sir." informs Dove.

"Twelve." says Sky.

"Eight." adds Russel, pale.

"Fifteen." Cardin states last.

I scowl at the students, irritation clear on my face.

"A dozen beowolves and you're already running on fumes." I pause for a second, letting the words sink in. "What if another pack finds you before you make it back to the village? What then?"

Four sets of eyes widen, throats bobbing as they swallow hard.

Good, they're getting it.

"If you ever hit such low Aura levels on the first day of a mission alone, you either call for backup or ask for an evac. Understood?"

Dove, Sky, and Russel nod in agreement, while Cardin bristles, his ego bruised.

"So what?" Shouts the ginger in fury. "You think we're weak? You think we are hopeless?"

I step closer, my voice dropping to a low growl, staring down at my past bully.

"I think your pride and lack of teamwork is suicidal."

Cardin takes a step back, his bravado deflating like a pricked balloon. His shoulders slump, gaze dropping to the ground. The posturing, the arrogance, it all crumbles away, leaving behind a raw, unguarded moment.

"So, what do I do?" he mumbles, kicking a pebble with his boot. "What can I do?"

A small smile tugs at the corners of my mouth. It's a start, a crack in that thick skull. I can work with that.

"That!" I say pointing at Cardin. "Recognizing the problem is the first step." I clap him on the shoulder, firm, reassuring. "You're at Beacon to learn, and that's what you'll do. As your teacher I will show you the path, the rest comes with training."

His eyes lift, meeting mine. There's a spark there, a hunger and ambition.

"Good." I say happily. seeing some real change at him. "Now let's get back to the village."

[Point of view: Yang Xiao long]

I punch my flat pillow, trying to mold it into a shape that might cradle my head, or at least not feel like a bag of sand.

Surprise, surprise, I had no luck there.

I flop onto my back, staring up at the rustic wooden ceiling. Moonlight filters through the cracks, casting silver lines onto the rough planks.

This is pointless. Sleep ain't coming, not with my mind racing like Bumblebee after a fine tuning.

I kick off my sleeping bag, the fabric rustling loudly in the quiet of the communal wood storage. I sit up, rubbing my hands over my face.

I roll onto my side, facing Blake's sleeping bag. Her eyes are squeezed shut tight, body rigid like a wooden plank.

She's not fooling anyone.

"Blake," I whisper, "Are you asleep?"

"Yes," she deadpans, eyes still closed.

"Hilarious," I grunt, voice dripping with sarcasm.

Her eyes flutter open. "You're going to wake the others," she whispers.

I raise an eyebrow.

"Am I, though?" I point towards Nora.

The girl is snoring loud enough to drown out a chainsaw. She's got Ren in a headlock, but he's sleeping peacefully, despite Nora's thunderous volume.

"That's impressive," states the cat girl staring at Ren. "And a little enviable."

I glance at Blake, a small smile playing on my lips.

"Yeah, it's pretty impressive, isn't it? Ninja boy could probably sleep through a war."

Blake shakes her head, chuckling as she sits up on her sleeping bag. She hugs her knees to her chest, her eyes reflecting the moonlight.

"What's keeping you up, Yang?" she asks, voice soft but clear. "Don't blame the accommodations, I've seen you crash on the dorm floor after ditching curfew and sneaking back late."

"Who do you know?" I ask worried.

"Night vision." She answers pointing at her yellow eyes, grinning smugly.

I sigh in defeat, ready to answer her question, running a hand through my hair.

"I dunno, Blake. I'm just too... excited, I guess. I mean, this is our first field mission, you know? Real fights, real stakes, real... everything."

She chuckles, shaking her head at me, giving me a cynical smile.

"And you're not even a little bit excited?" I ask, raising an eyebrow.

Blake sighs wearily and turns her face away, avoiding my gaze as she speaks.

"I think I just used it from when I was on 'missions' with the White Fang," she says, her fingers tracing air quotes around missions.

"Ooooooh yeah." I mutter as realization dawns on me. "You were a terrorist."

Blake's eyes flash, and she leans in, her voice a sharp, whispered lash. "I. Was. Not. A. Terrorist."

I can't help but grin, even as her eyes well up.

"Come on, Blake. At least you were a radical revolutionary."

A single tear spills from her, tracing a shiny path down her cheek. Her voice trembles, seething through clenched teeth.

"This isn't funny, Yang." She whispers, voice filled with anger, sadness and most of all shame.

Her hands grip her sleeping bag, knuckles white.

My eyes widen as I take in the raw pain and anger etched onto Blake's face. Her eyes, those brilliant golden orbs, flash with a storm of emotions. I swallow hard, the reality of my words hitting me like a punch to the gut.

"Blake, I... I'm sorry," I stammer, my voice barely above a whisper. "I didn't mean to-."

She looks away, her grip on her sleeping bag relaxing slightly. I reach out, my hand hovering near her shoulder, but I pull back, unsure.

"It's just... I don't think it's funny, Blake. I think you're awesome," I say, the words tumbling out before I can stop them.

Her head snaps back towards me, surprise written all over her face.

"What do you mean by that?" she asks, her voice barely audible.

I lean in, my voice steady and sincere.

"You fought for a cause, Blake. You saw something wrong with the world and you stood up to fight it. That's... that's pretty badass, if you ask me."

She shakes her head, her eyes cast downwards.

"I was wrong, Yang. People got hurt because of me, because of us."

I nod, acknowledging her words.

"Yeah, you were. But when you realized it, you left. You chose a new path, a better one. You didn't just give up, Blake. You decided to keep fighting, to make things right. That's what makes you a badass, Blake."

Her eyes meet mine, a hint of gratitude shining through the lingering pain. She takes a deep breath, her shoulders relaxing slightly. We sit in silence for a moment, the weight of our words hanging in the air.

The door slams open with a bang, making both Blake and I jump.

BAM!

Ruby stands there, panting, her eyes wide with urgency.

Weirdly she's alone, no sign of Weiss. But before I can ask about the heiress, Ruby gasps and shouts.

"The village it's under attack!"

Thanks for another great chapter ☺️!
I look forward to reading much more of this greatly interesting story 😸!

Ruby Reading Filth! Impossible! She's never even indicated she likes Katanas! All jokes aside congrats on a new job

When I saw the tile of this chapter I immediately assumed Ruby was kidnapped and replaced by and evil doppelgänger or something.

Then I read further:
Lily takes another cookie from the bag, holding it out to Ruby.

"Want one?" she asks, her voice still choked with tears.

Ruby shakes her head, her grin softening into a warm smile.

"No, thank you," she says. "I don't really like cookies. But I'm glad I found someone who does."

Lily wraps her tiny arms around Ruby's leg, squeezing tight.

"Thank you," she murmurs again, her voice muffled against Ruby's leg. Then, with a final wave, she darts off, disappearing into the darkness.
And I heaved a sigh of relief 😮‍💨
XD
Also adorable, glad that kid was happy 😊
Cookies make your day bright 😁

Happy to see so many readers liked the chapter.
The idea that 'Ruby doesn't like cookies' is something that occurred to me.
Even though I love portraying Ruby as a happy, innocent girl, she's still a deeply good person driven by a desire to help others. That's really what inspired that scene.
