Silence of the Skies (A BQ Empire Quest)

[X] "Fine. You're both joint heads of the Ito now."

Seems legit.

Oh please no. You plan to make the two siblings that don't agree with each other at all half the time joint-leaders of a clan. What happens when both want to do the opposite of the other? This could backfire so badly it stops being funny. You will want a clear chain of leadership and command. This would be like setting two people up as president of a nation only the rules don't say what happens if they disagree.

Reposting something from SB in regards to this:

*looks in*

... I'll just leave it open for a bit longer since only the more slunch vocalists of one side realize the problems with it. Whereas the other seems to not realize one critical problem that a dual heir to clan results in.

For reference (since the implication seems to be missed), barring factional existence at stake, Clans with insufficient members to contribute tend to have their members on active service reduced, and ones in critical state being entirely removed from active service. In both cases, this is unless something else has been done, arranged, debt, etc., which is outside of the normal handling.

Oh and the Ito Branch Family does lack a Head and/or Heir at all entirely (one or the other, not both due to Clan state of being). So while having both be the Clan Heir (or Head) works, having one be the Clan Head and other the Clan Heir is not a valid option.

And yes, if it isn't obvious per say, you are aware, due Kenta, that his sister is often out at the front. If she wasn't, she'd have time to go over the list of candidates instead of sending them over to you to go through.

Since apparently noone on SB cares enough to respond, I think I'll just post it here as well.

The GM heavily implied (as in "forcibly shoved it right in our faces and then confirmed it afterwards") that Shina made a deal that she'd continue fighting at the front, if Kenta gets to hang out with us and thereby build connections to the Clan Heir that the Ito Branch sorely needs right now.

I'll dump the more relevant quotes regarding this issue here:
For reference (since the implication seems to be missed), barring factional existence at stake, Clans with insufficient members to contribute tend to have their members on active service reduced, and ones in critical state being entirely removed from active service. In both cases, this is unless something else has been done, arranged, debt, etc., which is outside of the normal handling.
His exact family situation being the worst as the Ito family had sustained the brunt of the losses, though their family's more immediate forces remain the most intact.
The only reason why he's actually around present is because of his elder sister- and only other remaining member of the Ito branch family- having arranged for it behind his back and over his complaints.
And yes, if it isn't obvious per say, you are aware, due Kenta, that his sister is often out at the front.

So, in conclusion she has made a deal that obligates her to spend a lot of time at the front, in spite of the fact that her Branch has been reduced to only two members and her brother desperately doesn't want her to go.
The problem with this is that just making her joined head of the Branch is not going to actually stop her from having to return to the front.
Our father, the sole leader of the entire Akamatsu Clan, is still at that the front, so it's very dubious that even being full head of the Branch would free her from that obligation, so the idea that she's going to be able to stay away from the front citing her resposibilities as joined head of the Ito is ridiculous.
And that's not even going into how much problems it could cause her and the Ito to go back on a deal like this in their current state.

On the other hand if we'd just make her our personal guard or really just gave her any position or duty that would actually obligate her to stay here, it wouldn't be the recently appointed joined head of the rather weakened Ito claiming her responsibilites are too much to afford fulfilling her obligation even though her liege is doing just as much and more, but a direct order by the sole heir to the entire Akamatsu Clan that she naturally has to follow even if it means she'll regretfully (not really) be unable to fulfil the previous obligations.

[X] Trolling Response…

All things considered and given, you're pretty sure you'll have to just… ensure that Kenta can and will properly take things in due seriousness now and drop his hotheadedness. So a solution of sorts unfolds in your mind.

Straightening up a slight bit more, you make your response- for your own amusement of course as much as seriousness allows- "Then its settled, you'll joint head the Ito. I'll be sending over a the list of duties to be divided between you two. Additionally a guard will be present at all times relevant, my definition of such cases of course. If there are any problems or issues with it in six months time, we will review the matter and make any adjustments as I deem necessary. Is that satisfactory?"

Neither sibling responds for a moment. Then Kenta just simply nods in affirmation. "If you will excuse us, we have matters to attend to then."

You gesture freely for them to leave. Which Kenta does without a second glance back. Whereas Shina seems to pause for a moment in what you think she means as a subtle gesture of… something, before leaving. Oh well, it isn't important.

And with things resolved as they are for now, well, you have some other matters to arrange before you can get back to the marriage arrangement for Kenta on Shina's behalf. Hm… thinking over it for a few moment, you come to a decision, you'll just give him about half a year's time to settle in first before dropping it on him.

---

With that seemingly settled, you take up your lessons and courses for the year, which at Rena's suggestion, was shifted to being geared towards magic primarily as your skill with weapons is about sufficient for now and shoring up your magic before moving on to your lineage next year- for your fifteenth birthday.

No, you most definitely didn't nag her over the subject of 'when'. Though all in all, Rena didn't seem that annoyed at your antics, just… bemused by Hanako actually going along with said schemes. Of course, there is absolutely no way or possibility you shoehorned Hanako into them. Nope. None at all. No comedic disaster ensued at Hanako's expense. Obviously Hinako was not remotely involved.

Ok. So what if everyone in your usual group was involved. It was for your personal safety and benefit!

Your Elemental magic focus was…
[ ] Fire, Wind, and Lightning (+1 Rank to Each) (Requires Magic Theory EX)
[ ] Water, Ice, and Earth (+1 & 1/3rd Rank to Each)
[ ] Rounding off Fire, Wind, and Lightning while catching up on the other three (+1/3rd Rank to Fire, Wind, and Lightning & +2/3rd Rank to Water, Ice, and Earth)

Other than Elemental magic, you were schooled as well in other magics as to make the most of them. Though, without having a solid basis in them, it makes these much less useful. With that in mind, you focus was…
[ ] Magic Theory, with the associated Alteration and Reinforcement (+1 Rank to Magic Theory, Gain Alteration and Reinforcement at D Rank)
[ ] Theory, with a side of Healing (+1 Rank to Magic Theory, Gain Healing at C Rank)
[ ] Theory with a side of Grimores (+1 Rank to Magic Theory, Gain Grimores at C Rank)
[ ] Enchantment and its derivative, Enhancement (Gain Enchantment at A Rank, Enhancement at B Rank)
[ ] Enchantment and Healing (Gain Enchantment at A Rank, Healing at C Rank, Enhancement at D Rank)
[ ] Grimores and Runes (Gain Grimores at A Rank, Gain Runes at C Rank)

---

In any event, the year seemed to start out well, with the contested lands won over by your father and the clan, though there's little time for celebration. With the conquest successful, occupation of it is a matter to handle, and ensuring it isn't lost… thus the continuation of the war. But it seems to go rather well, as the main hostile clan in opposition… lost its head in the decisive battle.

From what you've heard, it was because he refused to retreat and ordered a fight to the last man… despite losing while possessing superior numbers and forces. Which you know is likely to have crushed morale, thus rendering it a moot act if not utterly retarded. Though you do entertain the thought that it might have been due to actual, legitmate reasons…

What terrain type was the conquered land?
[ ] Mountains
[ ] Forest
[ ] Volcanic

As to the stunt pulled…
[ ] The man was blinded by arrogance and deeply in denial.
[ ] There has to be another reason why.
[ ] Or was it something else? (Write In.)

Other than that nothing else of importa- *Interrupt-Intercept*

The doors to your officially crafted 'practice room' crudely slide open as the culprit's actions are but simple excessive brute force.

You see Hanako being dragged in behind the culprit- one Ito, Kenta- storms in rather furiously. Idly, you note that you should really remind Hanako not to try to physically restrain people when its going to end with her being dragged straight across the floor, colliding into doors, obstacles, and generally failing to restrain the person in the first place.

"You said you would honor my request, yet… how do you explain her injuries from the battle? No, rather I should say, how do you explain why she is at the frontlines still?" demands Kenta.

… Erm… uh… whoops? You keep a calm pokerface, for many reasons, one of which is as due proper response in this kind of situation. Right. You did order a guard on each of them… so then, that'd mean that Shina both managed her end without problems… and had sufficient time to spare to continue the duties agreed upon with your father…

Crap. This can't simply be because of that battle. No. Most probably, he's just using that as the excuse and reasoning to bring it up. A saving face for both of us while at the same time, resolving this bit of oversight. Hm… "Calm down, take a seat."

You turn to Hanako. "And let go of him already. Leave us. I'll be fine."

Hanako does what she's told, and hurriedly leaves the room. Without complaint. You figure its an improvement, though probably more than just for that reason alone. Oh well.

Kenta on the other hand, does not. No, more simply put, he refuses. In other words, this should be resolved quickly as to ensure this meeting never happened while rectifying your mistake.

So you decide to rectify it by…
[ ] Having Shina be your personal guard.
[ ] Arranging a marriage for Shina (Details, Write In).
[ ] Something Else (Write In. GM possess the right to veto.)

[X] Water, Ice, and Earth (+1 & 1/3rd Rank to Each)

[X] Grimores and Runes (Gain Grimores at A Rank, Gain Runes at C Rank)

[X] Volcanic

[X] There has to be another reason why.

Aaaand can't decide what is good for the last thing to vote on so I'll abstain from that for now.

[X] Water, Ice, and Earth (+1 & 1/3rd Rank to Each)

[X] Grimores and Runes (Gain Grimores at A Rank, Gain Runes at C Rank)

[X] Volcanic

[X] There has to be another reason why.

[X] Having Shina be your personal guard.

[X] Fire, Wind, and Lightning (+1 Rank to Each) (Requires Magic Theory EX)
[X] Magic Theory, with the associated Alteration and Reinforcement (+1 Rank to Magic Theory, Gain Alteration and Reinforcement at D Rank)

You decide on a more offensively geared curriculum, as you keep in mind the fact that your subordinates can cover you. Though that's not to say you eschew defense. You also make plans for expanding on them next year.

[X] Forest
[X] There has to be another reason why.

You consider it with a rather uncommon seriousness- mainly the fact that it doesn't add up given the alternative of surrender which, while not particularly honorable, at least is more likely less devastating to the clan itself. Though with no particular way to obtain information on them, it makes it rather difficult to come to any solid conclusions.

What you do know is that…:

1) The Clan in question is the 'Nakata Clan', a Minor Clan that recently attempted to claim status of a Major Clan, and struck out to make a name for itself.
2) The Nakata Clan had allied with a few other Clans also seeking to make a name for itself, though it is mostly an agreement to not wage war on each other and a pact against… stronger outsiders that invade them.
3) Members of the Ikeda Clan were spotted amidst the fighting, though they are confirmed not to be allied with the Nakata Clan nor its affiliated allies.
4) The primary neighboring Major Clan on the other side that the Nakata Clan and their allies border is the Katagawa Clan, which seems to be mostly directing its attention towards its other borders.
5) The fighting and losses from the 'last stand' has effectively nearly annihilated the Nakata Clan. Or at least its likely standing amongst its allies which abandoned it in that battle.

[X] Having Shina be your personal guard.

"There is no problem then if her assignment then won't place her at both unintentional nor undue risk?" You inquire, as a start. A simple confirmation is all you need to justify it.

Kenta remains silent for a few moments, precious seconds of which to maintain the meeting's plausible deniability ticks by. "... yes, though you won't deliberately add to it unnecessarily?"

"I promise," you reply simply, but firmly. Not as a peer or friend, but as one beholden to the position of head of the Clan… in the future. "All standing debts, deals, and negotiations with my Father then will be transferred and shifted onto this itself. Is that acceptable?"

Kenta blinks once, and swallows his breath. His eyes harden, his hand tightens, his breath slows. The look in his eyes is of a boy- no, a man weighing everything as he considers his response, a response that he cannot take back once he makes his decision now. "Yes."

"Please call Hanako in on your way out," you reply simply as you fetch a clean sheet and writing utensil as well. It is not because you are drafting the adjustments to the deals, but as a gesture. A preparation. You will simply make sure not to overlook anything, this time. On your- no, your Clan's pride and honor to this type of agreement.

Kenta doesn't reply, but stares at you for a moment longer before turning to leave, moving in a rather… rigid manner, as if still unsettled by his own decision. It isn't a hurried departure, yet also neither a slow one, but a well paced movement, a reflection of his discipline- even if it falls short of concealing his state of mind.

As he reaches the doorway, he pauses for a moment, and turns around to face you again. He exhales sharply, his gaze relaxes slightly, but the look in his eyes is all the more firm, determined. "Sorry about that."

"It's understandable," you reply, nodding, "I would do about the same in your position."

"Thank you." Kenta nods back before turning and finally leaving. You do hear a bit of faint few words exchanged between Kenta and Hanako.

With that, you proceed to handle this matter in full.

---

The rest of the year proceeds rather calmly… but that wasn't meant to be. News from the homeland arrived… ill news upon ill tides. The situation had deteriorated, particularly along your Clan's end of things. Apparently, they had struck upon something… that resulted in a full scale assault, by the Asami-Tarei Shogunate, which scattered the Clans still there.

You easily recognize the disproportionate and sudden response as unusual. There is no need for excessive force lest you are not trying to hide the fact that you consider remnants a legitimate threat, which in turn grants them credibility and potential support of your opposition.

Each Clan lost at least a few Samurai, confirmed that is. Amongst those casualties was… your mother and half her attached escort of Samurai. The rest, bar three, their fates are unknown. One of the three was directly responsible for delivering the message. Another provided cover for the ship to escape detection and arrive unharassed, though his fate is uncertain as they were last sighted to be engaged in combat. The third was left in command of what remained of your Clan's forces in the homeland.

The other Clans were presumed to have lost at least 6 Samurai each on average and a fair portion of their subordinate troops as well. Though no word of their losses is heard or known, of significance that is. In other words, the homeland might as well be entirely lost.

You take the day off, effectively, as you take in the news and let it sink in. But… that's not without consideration for the situation. No, that's not entirely right. With your father busy at the front, there is likely little to no time for him to arrange a response to rally those at the homeland, properly anyways. Of course, you could try to do so, and any attempt he'll likely have read through first, so that's an option, if you're sure of your speech and writing skills.

[ ] Don't Bother.
[ ] Make a Speech… to convince them to join the Clan in the new lands...
---[ ] Directed at members of your Clan still in the homeland. (Write In.)
---[ ] Directed at all surviving Clans still in the homeland. (Write In. Your specific intentions required.)
[ ] Make a Speech… to encourage them to hold out in the homeland...
---[ ] Directed at members of your Clan. (Write In.)
---[ ] Directed at all surviving Clans. (Write In. Your specific intentions required.)

---

You take the event to heart. Your mother and those with her… they chose to stay to reclaim the homeland, with the acknowledgement of this potential fate befalling them, and instead of choosing the alternative, at first chance. There is little one can do about what has already come to past, but take pride and honor in their actions as your mother's son, and the heir of the Akamatsu Clan, you know she nor those under her command would sink to a level unbefitting of the Clan's history. A misfortunate is a misfortunate, but also a chance to move forth and overcome great obstacles.

Not now… but eventually, in the future… you will pay them back in turn. Without power, you cannot advance… without glory you will not strike fear into the hearts of those whom oppose you. These are things within your reach that you can change-no, will change! A firm resolve, of which you take to heart.

With your mind set forth towards it, you schedule your plans…
[ ] Spend some time here and there with the Miko under Rena. Not additionally with Rena, just her subordinates.
[ ] Spend time with Shina and Hanako… practice of course. By extension, Eri and Hinako as well.
[ ] Spend more time training. (+1 Training Set Option, Below)

For your own lessons and training, you… (Pick Two)
[ ] Bring your trio of Primary Elements up to S Rank Proper… and focus on bringing up one of them further… (+1/3rd Rank to Fire, Wind, and Lightning)
[ ] You decide to bring up one Element at S Rank to EX Rank… (Pick one of course, requires them to be at S Rank first.)
[ ] Alteration and Reinforcement learning and training… but one more than the other, by 'a bit'… (Alteration and Reinforcement, D Rank => C Rank)
---[ ] Pick One: Alteration / Reinforcement (Selected Choice, C Rank => A Rank)
[ ] Dabble 'a bit' in Enchantment and Enhancement… (Gain Enchantment at B Rank and Enhancement at C Rank)
[ ] Pick up knowledge of Runes. (Gain Runes at C Rank)
[ ] Learn Healing… and a bit on Grimores as well. (Gain Healing at B Rank and C Rank Grimore)

---

The year itself is anything but uneventful…

Rena takes you out to the waterfall with Hanako and Shina both in attendance as well. None of the others are present for obvious concerns so you can conceal the full extent of your Lineage as it is thus far, and your affinity as well. As both are your Personal Guard, trust and secrecy isn't an issue.

Hanako for one, seems rather more serious than usual, or at least, very much focus on her surroundings and not letting minor nuisances distract her in the slightest. Shina on the other hand, keeps a stoic expression and her posture neutral as to not draw any attention in the event there is a interloper.

Rena, you're sure of, has likely set up a perimeter with her shikigami. Somehow. She still won't divulge information on them or each you it. Oh well, no matter, she seems are more agreeable about your exploring your lineage and also your affinity. Though maybe a bit too eager, you think she might be just trying to wrap up her obligations to your mother as soon as possible… to get even or something else, as a friend? Or more?

The choice in location is both for its position and clear view of the moonlight, though Rena claims its relevant to the more… effective and least overly extravagant method of learning one's Lineage's capabilities.

Your Lineage is…
[ ] Crest of Loyalty (Requires, Staying Loyal to your former Shogunate)
[ ] Theory of the Elements
[ ] Moonlight Resonance
[ ] Write In Idea/Suggestion (Subject to GM approval)

Note: I'll add other options later for Lineage.

---

Also, a particular event occurred… (Pick two and their order.)
[ ] The aspiring Clans formed a Coalition against the Akamatsu Clan. Most of them anyways. Given there's an unaligned envoy here.
[ ] A straggler from the Ikeda Clan shows up entirely out of place… at the residence. under your escort's watch. He's also badly injured.
[ ] A Katagawa diplomatic envoy arrives… with much lack of grace and a seemingly haughty attitude.
[ ] A representative of the Nakata Clan arrives at your residence's doorstep. Entirely unarmed, under your escort's watch. Oh, and its a girl.
[ ] An unusual sighting… and disruption of trade. Sea Serpents?

Moonlight resonance sounds nice. We can be a moon vampire.

. . . Okay, not really. But Crest of Loyalty would need some serious benefits to make up for that drawback. SB hates enforced loyalty. Elements just seems flat and boring. This leaves Moonlight Resonance as the only interesting one.

Hmm. How about one that boosts our Charisma rating to absurd degrees? To the point where our subordinates get minor bonuses just from serving us, we get bonuses to recruit/seduce enemies away from their side and into our own, and our people are more loyal and motivated. An Iskander style Bloodline skill.

All of that stuff sounds like things that might actually be part of the Crest of Loyality.
Still, with so little information on what it actually does, it just doesn't seem worth the drawbacks.

As for the Moon Resonance, the main problem I see with that is that getting superpowers or even only a significant power boost every full moon is somewhat obvious and easy to figure out the reason for.
Unless it's significantly more low key than I imagine, we'd be running a serious risk of outside observers connecting the dots whenever we use it, which would apparently have rather problematic consequences.

Even so, we can leverage things/our plans of actions around maximizing the influeunce of it better than other people. Forcing them to go out of their way to attack on non full moon is a benefit in of itself.

I was more referring to how the very fact that we have any Lineage of this kind at all would be rather bad for us, if it got out, or at least that's the impression I got from all the security and secrecy measures we've taken for this.

That's entirely off.

There are tradeoffs of course. Also, some would beg to differ on 'boring but practical'.

Nope. At minimum, that would fall under a more pure Lineage, or in terms of Clan type... at least Fudai. Usually, with some exceptions.

Drawbacks is subjective, but yes, anything that involves a direct tradeoff generally has things to balance it out.

It isn't that keyed to a full moon. Or the moon at all, though it does help.

Generally speaking, the less your enemies know of and about it, the less effectively if at all, can they prepare a counter(measure) against you. Or factor it into account and plan accordingly. Barring cases where sheer power and strength makes that a difficult or more task... its less important. Or if you aren't the only potential heir, since that would warrant decreased risk to the Clan if something happened to you.

Also, the other ways are usually both more flashly and also more combat reliant... amongst other things, to confirm the whole nine yards... the initial package anyways.

Oh and I'm on QQ's chat atm as well (and steam and Skype if you prefer those).

Hm.
I think I might just go with Crest of Loyality.
It might become a pain in the ass later on, but it's probably going to be rather powerful.
Not to mention that the consequences should be entertaining as well.
And god knows the only way to keep SB even remotely in line is to threaten their shinies.
Enforced loyality might not be such a bad thing after all, if it curbs SB's sometimes rather whimsical nature.

Still, I'll probably wait with voting until tomorrow.
I'm too tired to trust myself to accompany it with proper reasoning and won't even go near the speech in this state.
Maybe there'll even have been some further discussion when I wake up.

It's hard to make a choice when you don't know much of anything about each of the picks.

Issue with the Crest is the forced loyalty. When you want to build your own nation having to follow someone else when they tell you do do something can lead to pain. Lots and lots of pain. Not the good kind of pain either the "Why??" Kind.

Does anybody have a good idea on how to convince the remnants to join under our banner? I have an idea... but I'm afraid it might piss off the Asami-Tarei Shogunate, a possible alternative would be appreciated.

I've been working on a speech for the past couple of days, but it's rough, I'd like second and third opinions if possible.

"People of Aozora, you have been wronged! The sacred land of your ancestors has been desecrated, your family and friends senselessly murdered, your very livelihood has been stolen from you! The greed of the Shogunate has gone too far, the blood of your people, of our people, has been spilled enough. Not even my mother, guarded by her finest and most loyal of subordinates was spared such a fate. This state of affairs shall not stand, must not stand, and will not stand; not as long as I still draw breath! Brave people of Aozora, I beseech thee, let us help you; let me help you. Let us offer you shelter and succor, that we may rise up and drive the unscrupulous dogs of the Tarei from our lives and from our homes. I know you burn for vengeance, as do I, but now is the time to bide; to gather our resources and strengthen ourselves for the battle to come. I ask of you, husbands and fathers, faithful sons, think of your families and place them first amongst your priorities; secure first your legacy and loved ones, then seek justice for the fallen. I know I presume much, to speak for the people of Aozora, but have we not all suffered the pain of loss? No, not one of us has been left unaffected by this grave injustice. Someone has to take a stand; for unity, for healing, for what is right instead of what is easy. And I take that stand gladly, for that is the depth of love that I have for Eien no Aozora no Tochi, for that is the loyalty I feel towards my home. So I ask of you to join me- in spirit if not in body -so that we may throw off the shackles of those who would seek to oppress us as one people, and take back what is ours by right!"

*Aozora means "blue sky" in Japanese, and Eien no Aozora no Tochi means "land (or conversely, the land) of the eternal blue sky," I hope nobody minds that I took it upon myself to come up with a name for the nation of our birth.*

Speech looks better then anything I can make up, so I'm gonna have to vote for it. Besides, more people joining us can't be bad, right? Well, I hope at least...

Vote Closed. Update in process. Should be up tomorrow. In meantime, feel free to discuss how you'd deal with the two events....

[x] Make a Speech… to convince them to join the Clan in the new lands...
---[x] Directed at all surviving Clans still in the homeland. (Write In. Your specific intentions required.)
---[x] Backgroundnoise's speech

You take some time to carefully draw up and plan your speech, organizing it to fit your manner of approach… though you spend a bit also revising and making adjustments to it, after all, every bit counts as you aren't simply trying to convince your own Clan members, but also those who did- and from a certain point of view, still- outrank you.

Generally, given the importance of the matter, you don't even have to arrange for measures to be taken, nor mention the need for caution. Its a thing left unsaid when all present and involved are aware, though its also simply to ensure there is no possibility of eavesdroppers realizing the importance nor the significance of it.

The sight that accompanies the messenger's return trip to the homeland only but confirms that the effort and thought you put into the speech will hold at least, some sway. Enough to at least warrant sending a proper detachment of transports… even if they are the very same you had used to arrive here. But how well? The thought of it worries you somewhat, but not enough to lose sleep over. After all, what's done is done. You can only hope things turn out for the better.

By your generous, pessimistic estimate, you think you'll hear word of it by next year. Less so due to the travel time, and more due to the speed, security, and caution the spread of the word needs… and also the time to gather up those that choose to heed your words, without drawing attention to it and thus ensuring a clean departure.

[x] Spend time with Shina and Hanako… practice of course. By extension, Eri and Hinako as well.
[x] Bring your trio of Primary Elements up to S Rank Proper… and focus on bringing up one of them further… (+1/3rd Rank to Fire, Wind, and Lightning)
[x] Dabble 'a bit' in Enchantment and Enhancement… (Gain Enchantment at B Rank and Enhancement at C Rank)

The scene before you plays out like any other day… since you decided to spend time practicing with Shina and Hanako. Of course, you made sure to put invitation out to Eri, Hinako, and Kenta. Of the three, only Kenta declined, on grounds of being busy with Clan duties. Thus the five of you are present in the yard, taking turns in pairs to practice. Though, a common problem arose.

"Hanako," Shina sighs, rubbing her head with her free hand, "please do this seriously."

"Bu-but…," Hanako glances back and forth between you and Shina, and pouts.

"Honestly, Akogawa-san, if you're that concerned, then please get your act together when your liege is present," says Eri from her position off to the side, mostly as she's keeping watch on the surroundings and merely glancing at Hanako from the edge of her vision.

"As long as Hana can manage when it matters is what counts," replies Hinako, "isn't that right Hana?"

Hanako nods and lowers her head, and replies in a increasingly tiny voice, "My apologies…."

"Ah… well, if its alright with you, m'lord, then we'll just skip over Hanako and one of us with substitute in for her part," says Shina. She glances over at Hinako, for a moment, before shifting her gaze towards Eri.

"It can't be helped," you reply shrugging in turn. You're pretty sure that the three of them.

"Sorry…," mutters a sulking Hanako.

"So, who'll substitute for Akogawa-san?" asks Shina.

Immediately, Hinako responds "I will-"

"No." A unified response by the other three girls.

"Correction, who will substitute for Akogawa-san, other than her sister," says Shina.

"Ehhh? What did I do?" asks Hinako.

A trio of glares meets her question. Which kind of begs the question, what did she do anyways. Shina's eye twitches slightly, for a moment. "If you won't take the training seriously, I see no reason to extend the amount of time you spend with m'lord."

"The manner and means you handle yourself with in a practice match is lacking," remarks Eri. She shakes her head, "The movements are far too lax and gives far too many openings, too many for it to be acceptable as a tactic to use lull ones opponent into overextending."

"Hina… such inelegent movements and manners, have you no shame!" declares Hanako.

A silent pause as all eyes turn on Hanako.

"Well, she has a point," says Eri, shrugging slightly as she says so. "Though, using either of the three of us as a standard for comparison isn't fair to her. Then again, given the circumstances, one can't fault her for it."

"Is that so? I recall being held to stricter standards than what she's demonstrated," replies Shina, "So I cannot agree with you on that. However, I agree, her sister isn't a fair standard to compare her to."

"Yes yes~" Hinako seems to brush off their complaints without much care. Then again, that's just how she is. "For a moment I thought you were just trying to get together with Akamatsu-sama~"

Hanako nearly tips over, as if smacked over the head by a ten ton steel block- or something- before catching herself.

"No such thing," declares Eri. She frowns at the joking accusation.

"I-I didn't consider such-" Shina pauses mid-sentence in realization, as eyes turn towards her now. "I didn't mean it in that way."

"Now now, no need to be shy about hitting on Akamatsu-sama~" Hinako grins as her hand slips to the hilt of her sheathed blade.

"I'm sorry, you have the wrong idea," replies Shina as her hand moves to the hilt of her blade and her posture shifts in preparation for a fight, "do you need me to beat it out of you?"

"Eh, eh? Eh?!" Hanako glances between the two.

Eri lightly taps her forehead with her hand, then rubs it for a moment. "Ito-san, I think it's best if you ask Akamatsu-dono."

"Let's just rotate it then between the three of you until you girls work something out, ok?" you say, nay, conclude. You consider it for a moment before adding, "Nothing fatal nor lasting harm, understood?"

"Understood." / "Y-yes." / "Yes yes~" / "As you say m'lord."

[x] Moonlight Resonance

You take up position within a prepared area… and wait. Likewise, so does Rena. What little that occurs, that you see, is pretty much a grimore laid out in front of Rena… and in your boredom and wait, that the ground you're on is actually not actual ground, but… paper of some sort. You figure its either talismans or shikigami.

Hanako and Shina take up position separately, and occasionally relocate their positions as they are present for your protection, not as apart of it. Hanako, you note, sneaks the occasional glance in your direction, though its often accompanied in short order with Shina glaring at her, which prompts Hanako to pay attention to her task at hand… for a while more.

By night time, you notice Hanako attempting to stay awake and failing, miserably, instead, she's nodding off. Shina on the other hand, seems to be a bit more… on edge, as if to make up for Hanako's shortcoming.

"That should be about it… as far as it goes thus far anyways," says Rena as she gets up from her seated position, scooping up the grimore in hand as well.

"... That's all?" says Shina. Her words echoing exactly what you were about to say yourself.

"Yes, though the delay was a bit due confirmation of the rest of it. Not all of them take the same span of time. Different limitations, factors, effects, and more, all factor into account," explains Rena. "Or would you have preferred the alternative instead?"

Shina takes in the latter for a moment before sighing, "Point, Hanako would have a heart attack over it."

"I don't think it'd be that bad," you say, "but still, what was the other alternative again?"

"Life or death combat, grueling training course- maybe a bit life threatening, and much more," replies Rena, nonchalantly.

"That's rather excessive," muses Shina. "Though I suppose that's just being through?"

"Of course."

You pale slightly and wisely refrain from commenting further, instead, just getting up from your position and walking over to Rena. "So, Sensei, the results?"

"Its best you see for yourself. Keep it safe if you aren't going to destroy it after you're done," says Rena as she hands the page within the grimore to you.

"Thank you, Sensei," you say as you accept the page in hand and read over it. Idly, you note that it wasn't ripped from the grimore.

Lineage => Wind & Water
Water - C Rank => B Rank
Wind - S Rank => EX Rank
Moonlight Resonance (True) - [(Pure) Lineage]
---Enables the use of Moonlight as a non-standard 'element'.
---As the Primary of one's Lineage, Affinity is set to Wind & Water
---At night, when the moon is out and one is not barred from the outside, all Elements are boosted by a full Rank. Moonlight is also counted as well
---Due to Rank modification at night, aging rate is effectively halved to 1/8th.
Moonlight - N/a (Currently Effectively A+ Rank)
---You are capable of manipulating the moonlight, and creating it in broad daylight as well. It generally leans towards supportive uses, much like Lightning, until sufficient Rank is obtained, age, or other skills and/or abilities from one's Lineage.
---Its rank is derived from the average of your Water & Wind Ranks, rounded down, but instead, draws its capacity from the combined total of your Fire and Lightning magics.
---It effectively gains a 2 Rank boost when conditions are met for Moonlight Resonance.
---Direct use in presence of the Sun or magic that qualifies as 'daylight' in effect or some manner, effectiveness is reduced. In the case of the latter, it is only if Moonlight Resonance condition is not met.
---Currently cannot use Fire and Lightning magic when using Moonlight and vice versa. Your are certain it will change for the better in due time as you age and/or train towards it.
---Passively replenishes your Fire & Lightning Capacity when using Moonlight when Moonlight Resonance condition is met.

[x] A representative of the Nakata Clan arrives at your residence's doorstep. Entirely unarmed, under your escort's watch. Oh, and its a girl.

You straighten out your attire one more time, with Hanako nodding a 'ok' in turn, only for you to ignore her and glance over at Shina, who nods in affirmation. After all, Shina is more experienced in this matter than Hanako, in your opinion anyways. With that, you turn to Hanako, "Bring in the representative."

"Yes." Hanako turns and quickly exits the room at a brisk pace.

Meanwhile, Shina takes up position to your right, facing the same direction as you are, of course. And standing as opposed to seated. After all, should it come to it, she has to be ready to act at a moments notice, and being seated is a hinderance to it.

After a few moments, you hear the footsteps of two individuals that you can make out with certainty, and one other. Another moment later, the head of your guard appears at the doorway and steps to the side. Hanako, of course, behind after the guest.

A girl dressed in rather formal attire, as opposed to combat tailored formal dress, whom appears physically older than you by about a year or two, steps into view. She turns, her light green hair swaying behind her… it trails into a shade of emerald blue… Her eyes a shade of black, and a rather… modest figure.

She bows once, a practiced manner, "My apologizes for infringing upon your time, if it is inconvenient…"

"No, it's fine, please, take a seat," you say, gesturing to the arrangement before you. Its a comfortable cushion reserved for guests of course.

"Thank you, very much," the girl says, making another bow before proceeding to enter and take the offered seat.

Hanako motions for the head of your guard to leave, which he does rather promptly, and proceeds to take up position behind the girl.

"So, what business do you have with me that cannot be taken up with my father?" you state as much as you ask. Blunt, but there is little else to say for the most part.

The Nakata representative closes her eyes for a moment before speaking. "I would like to request the Akamatsu Clan's services to recover my brother from the Katagawa Clan."

You keep your face straight as possible, unchanged from her statement. After all, it would be telling if you showed interest at what seems to be the information you lack. A single, precise word rolls off your tongue, "Explain."

"With the death of my father at your Clan's hands, leadership of the Clan falls to my brother, whom is held hostage by the Katagawa Clan," says the Nakata girl. "Furthermore, amongst the casualties in the battle was the attache from the Katagawa Clan."

"And in other words, your death has also been feigned, correct?" you ask, to which she nods. "Thus how would you prove your identity then?"

"My father's retainer should presently be at the camp along with three others that were willing to comply with my decision," replies the girl. "Most of the Clan did and many of the remaining members of the Clan support him over myself as successor of the Clan."

"In other words, you are proposing yourself as hostage for the duration, or as the bargaining chip for the deal, correct?" you say. After all, she has more or less given the implication that the subordinates that followed her are but at the mercy of your Clan.

"Yes." A simple, but firm response.

You give consideration of what you should say next… or if you should agree to it. Or dismiss it out of hand, after all, for all you know, it is all but an elaborate ploy to get your father killed and to weaken your Clan. After all, sending a girl is by far more expandable than sending a male in line for succession.

I think this covers all our bases.

[X] "Well, what happens when we rescue him? You know, if we do. We were kind of at war, if you recall. Do you happen to know your brother's opinion on that?"

I'm gonna have to agree with Vindictus, it's the best idea I've heard so far.

"... upon further consideration I will take you up on that then," you say. "However, to do that, of course, I will need your complete cooperation."

"Yes, I understand," replies the Nakata girl, "it won't be a problem."

You conceal your smile. The girl clearly does know to read below the surface and makes no effort to conceal it. "First, where is he held? The guard?"

"One of the rural estates owned by a member of the Katagawa Clan. As such, the guard shouldn't be too heavy, however, it is rather close to two of the border forts. Both appear to be rather well manned still," replies the girl. "As for directly, there shouldn't be more than a dozen or fifteen at most. The Katagawa member technically seems to have sufficient forces under him to qualify as a branch family, yet isn't. As to the reason for the number, I do not know."

"In other words, they're favoring overall cohesion and buying off their own Clan members with relatively important positions that would otherwise not be granted to a branch family, much less a regular Clan serving under them," you deduce. Furthermore, what's left unsaid is the simple matter that the guard is composed of up to a dozen mixed lineage Samurai and up to three pure lineage Samurai. Certainly a problem for sneaking in a quick force to retrieve a heir without escalation into outright war.

"Correct, if you need to confirm it, I will cover the expenses of it," replies the Nakata girl. She proceeds to fish out a small, elaborate but simple, box and places it on the table.

"... you made off with the Clan funds?" you say while fighting back a urge to stare at her.

"No," replies the Nakata girl. She frowns slightly for a moment before seemingly realizing her action, "This is was what little my mother had left for me." She proceeds to take out a small pouch from her sleeves and loosens the binding before placing it onto the table. "This, is the amount taken from the treasury. Unfortunately it is not all of it. But about most of it."

"Hanako, please," you say, motioning to her to check.

Hanako nods and proceeds to do so, starting with the treasury bag. She blinks as she fetches the contents out one by one. Gold piece by gold piece. Eighteen.

Next of course, is the funds left by the Nakata girl's mother. You pretty much doubt it'd be much. After all, to match her claims, it couldn't be more than- Wait, why are there platinums?!

One platinum. Three. Fourteen platinum in total and seven gold. And nothing else.

"What." You just stare at the Nakata girl. Little? How the hell is that- or rather, this, little?! Wh-

"I am Kiyoko of Nakata," says the girl, finally introducing herself proper. "This will have to serve for an explanation for now," claims- no, says the Nakata girl.

… Ah whatever, you'll just do a check over on the information you've been given and check out her story through other avenues before proceeding. She's not going to tell you much if anything else about herself unless you can deduce it correctly. That aside, the meeting is about done.

"Very well, my subordinate," you gesture to Hanako, "will oversee the arrangements for your stay Nakata-dono."

"Thank you very much," replies Kiyoko. She makes a half bow from her seated position before standing. "Please. I look forward to your success."

You nod.

"Then I shall be going, pardon my rudeness," says Kiyoko as she makes another quick, bow before proceeding to leave the room, with Hanako following quickly behind her.

Once you're sure they're out of earshot, you sigh and slouch backwards, supporting your weight with your arms. You exhale rather deeply, as you vent the built up tension.

"That was rather well handled, for your first time," remarks Shina as she turns to face you.

"Yeah yeah," you reply offhandedly as you give thought and consideration over the exact funds presented before you.

[ ] Make use of both amounts.
[ ] Make use of only the amount from the treasury.
[ ] Don't make use of either, deduct costs from the treasury amount later.
[ ] Don't make use of either, don't deduct costs from the funds provided afterwards.

You proceed to just take a small break, while Shina handles the arrangements.

---

"Hm? Slacking off?"

You blink and immediately snap to proper sitting posture, and somewhat tensed. After all, you would realize and notice someone's presence… if hostile towards you, or they'd be announced if not. Normally. You immediately glance in direction of the speaker, who comes into view a short moment later.

At the same time, you notice the familiar sound of Shina's footsteps coming up from behind you. It'd seem she's done with the task you handed off to her. "It is a pleasure to meet you again, Kasuga-dono."

A girl of about similar physical age to Shina steps into view, her long silvery-violet hair flowing gracefully in the afternoon wind. Dressed in modified armor that more so resembles what you know of western armor with aesthetics of the far east engraved and styling, including a partial headpiece which primarily serves purpose of protecting her forehead and the sides, while not obstructing full view of her face. The armor itself also seems to place a fair degree on not restricting the scope of her movements, even if it is at some expense of protection, of which the areas are covered by fabric instead. At her side is a pair of swords. Both sides, along with a naginata with its blade wrapped in a sheathed manner across her back. She glances at Shina. "My condolences for your loss Ito-dono."

"Thank you for your concern Kasuga-dono," replies Shina.

There is no need to say 'what brings you here'. After all, the Kasuga Clan is one of the Fudai Clans of the Yamagi Shogunate. In other words, the first arrivals have come. Great, what timing she has. Furthermore, the only surviving daughter of the Kasuga Fudai Clan that you are aware of is one Kasuga Sen. You mentally sigh as you suppress the beginnings of a headache. "My apologizes for the lacking reception Kasuga-dono."

"If you could provide an adequate challenge-" the Kasuga girl shrugs, "-which is impossible. Not your fault, but that's just how it is."

You blink and slightly turn your attention to the side as you notice a rather hurried, set of footsteps approaching the room. "Sen, I told you to wait until I finished the arrangements!"

"Ah, Kasuga-dono," the girl turns to face the direction of the footsteps, "you're done with the arrangement's already?"

"No, its being handled however. And what is this about challenging Akamatsu-dono?" demands- or at least it sounds like such, the other Kasuga.

"The second… no, fifth son of the Kasuga family, correct?" inquires Shina. On your behalf.

"Yes, that's correct," says the newcomer as he comes to a halt next to the girl, if ambit still outside direct view, not that you don't have a general idea of his rough features from the shadow casted upon the screen door. "My apologies for my sister's rudeness."

The fifth son of the Kasuga Fudai Clan, Kasuga Hiroshi. Not remotely in line for succession unless your information's gone to hell. Rather rough physical build, tall, hazel colored hair and black eyes. Well, the rough appearance is pretty par usual for Kasuga males.

"No, its fine," you say calmly, as after all, you do have a role to play out at least, for now to have a proper base to work with while ensuring nothing is stacked against you. "My apologizes for the poor reception I've provided."

"No, not at all, if anything, what your subordinate managed to arrange on short order is quite impressive, if otherwise sufficient," replies Hiroshi. "Nasaki-dono, if memory serves me correctly."

"Noted. If there is anyone else that is not present currently to hold the meeting, we can begin immediately once they arrive," you say. That is, of course, as this is your responsibility for your actions. As such, this doesn't pertain your father.

"...," Hiroshi is silent for a moment. You figure he's considering more borderline cases, which makes sense, since its highly subjective. "No, but given your response, and the timing… your subordinates haven't informed you of the other guest you have."

"... other guest? What do you mean Kasuga-dono?" you ask.

"A samurai from another Clan, likely native to here, whom appears rather badly injured. His wounds are being attended to presently. I'll have him brought over if you do not mind, Akamatsu-dono," replies Hiroshi.

"Yes, please do. We will proceed with the meeting once its over," you say.

"Now, then, we will be back later," says Hiroshi as he gestures to Sen to follow after him, then proceeds to turn and head off.

She turns to face you for a moment, her violet eyes gazing over you, as if sizing you up. "A practice match would be fine too."

"Sen!" snaps Hiroshi.

"Yes yes Kasuga-dono." Sen grins for a moment before turning and leaving.

---

[ ] Hiroshi is in attendance.
[ ] Sen is in attendance.
[ ] Neither Kasuga member is in attendance.

The samurai in question is brought forth, before you in short order. His appearance is ragged and his armor and clothes both rather worn out from heavy, rough use without much repairs to them. Its a bit of a wonder how he isn't dead, given where some of the breaches are located.

His features are nothing too striking or notable. If anything, you're sure he's just a rank and file member of the Ikeda Clan. His allegiance, of course, being obvious due to his Clan insignia. "Akamatsu-dono, thank you for your generosity."

"Its nothing," you reply simply. "I suppose your business is of great importance for your life to have been at such risk?"

"To an extent beyond our capacity to handle, yes," replies the Ikeda samurai. He frowns, "My comrades were not as fortunate and fell victim to those who would seek the endeavor a failure."

"Oh?"

"My liege is still but held hostage by the Katagawa Clan. Furthermore, in the same misfortune that befell me and my comrades, his sister has also been taken as well, though I am not sure if she is still alive or not."

… If you were half awake you'd call it deja vu. But… in all due seriousness, what the hell? You mentally sigh and shove the growing headache to the back of your head as you consider what to say and do next.

What do you say/do? Call in Kiyoko as well? Or anyone?
(Write In; Cannot have both Kasuga siblings present.)
