Are any actually implemented?
Ideally being able to block tags for why I'm asking would be nice but barring that we've got the bookmarked filter search but let's say for instance someone wanted to block stories related to or containing high school dxd. They'd have to individually filter out close to 20 different tags to do so. Instead of just one or two depending on how the synonyms are implemented.

This is an assumption on my part though, I just see that "without synonyms" checkmark and assume that's what that means, if not then my bad.

Unfortunately, no tag synonyms have been set up.

Staff/mods just got the ability to moderate and change tags earlier this year, and that sort of thing is like 4th-5th on the list of things to do behind standard mod stuff like answering questions and handling reports.

It is a huge undertaking. Here are some fun stats:
QQ currently has 20657 tags in the system.
11696 of them are only used once.

What I heard was "we can ignore half the tags when we do the initial tag synonyms set-up" and "even if we do that, we'll have nearly nine thousand tags to wrangle".

On the contrary, unique tags have a reasonable chance of being bespoke renditions of existing tags that the author hasn't seen in the system to copy verbatim.

I checked and corrected/merged a few a couple of months ago that were like "type moon" and "tpye moon". More such stuff still exists, and is the easy first step.

"Self inset" should probably be corrected to "self insert", since that's what most people are using it for.

Just to give you an idea, here is the list of tags we currently have that have 'self' in them that are self insert related:

alternatehistory.com self-insert
duo self inserts
insert not self
isekai self insert
kind of a self insert
kind of self inser
kind off self insert
lots of self inserts
male self insert
mass self insert
maybe not self insert
mew self insert
multi-self-insert
non self insert pov
non-self insert
not quite a self insert
reincarnation self insert
reverse self insert
self insert
self insert from another perspective
self insert is not the main character
self insert oc
self insert's life is hanging by thread.
self(?) insert
self-insert
self-insert (i guess?)
self-insert (with a blend of innate darkness)
self-insert battle royale
self-insert mc
self-insert-kinda
self-inserts
self-inserts (plural)
selfinsert
some self inserts later
sorta self insert
triple-self-insert
young justice self insert

(that doesn't include variations on 'si' or misspellings of 'self' and other such things)

There are a few that are similar enough to be merged/made synonyms (like self insert and self-insert), but then you have 'duo self inserts' which strictly speaking has a different meaning (namely that there are two of them). Thus, do we merge it in/make synonyms? That would be good for the person who just cares about having a big 'self insert' tag that will give them everything and/or allow them to ignore everything. Or, do we leave it alone, because maybe people want to specifically look for things with two self inserts, not just one.

So yeah, tough wrangling and considerations, even for very closely related tags.

these 3 can probably just be merged, same with the "duo" ones. Honestly, instead of allowing for freeform tags, there should be an appeal process, as limiting as it is. Like if you want a new tag to add to your story, you appeal to a mod or admin to add it or even consider if it needs to be added, or if there's another tag that's already close enough to fit. Like, all those "no beta we die like (x character)" tags should just be merged to a "no beta" tag. This isn't AO3, after all, which is where that tag originated.

It was just stated that they don't bother wrangling them because it's too much effort, why would they add an appeal process and make even more work for themselves?

Because it ultimately reduces the work added? They could add an auto-reject feature for certain tags. Right now, they have to wrangle the tags that are added. That's more work than an occasional appeal to add a tag.

Except again, they don't have to, or even usually do, wrangle them they can just not wrangle them if no one's free to do so. If there was an approval system then someone would have to handle the tag requests.

The thing is, one of the 2 SFW sites has an approval system, and it just works. Its less messy than it currently is. How many fic threads on this site have stupid single use tags? It clutters up the list when searching through the tags, because you have to click each individual tag to see if there's a story that catches your interest. And tags NEED to be wrangled, or they end up bloating the page count on the back end due to generating a new page based on that tag. Because that's how coding a forum website usually works, a new page is added when content is generated.
