Tanya’s Hogwarts Adventures (Youjo Senki, Harry Potter)

The man seemed scared of Tanya for some reason, which amused Harry. Sure, Tanya was good at magic, but she was not going to hurt anyone. She liked theater club and flying, not dueling. And she was always trying to keep everyone calm. She was a very peaceful person.
"Yes...the subterfuge is working..."

"Anyone know about a second year girl?"

Tanya turned and spoke up. "Is it Lily?"

The prefect nodded. "She's been petrified."
"OH WELL I TRIED!"

You know I wonder if Hogwarts itself helped set things up to protect its charges from the Basilisk. Like in most cases they're far from the bathroom and it has more ability to set things to prevent death, while with Moaning Myrtle she was unlucky enough to be directly there when it opened to let the beast out.
Well every single case of the petrification was arguably lucky when you realize that a genuine, direct look at the eyes of a Basilisk straightup kills you outright.

I dont know how... 'alive' the castle is, and im pretty sure several instances were due to the Basilisk just not fully opening its eyes? But its not a stretch to assume Hogwarts itself purposefully made them hit with only the petrification. Because being dtoned, er, turned to stone, is better than death.
