That Which Survived [Silmarillion/LoTR AU Quest]

[X] Settle in Osgiliath?

Osgiliath or Umbar... hmm. Of the two Umbar would probably be preferable; but perhaps it would be better to split the difference, and head to [X] Pelargir.

(This hasn't happened yet, but in the early Third Age, Queen Berúthiel was noted to despise the Sea and moved away from Pelargir; conversely then-King Tarannon Falastur lived there, for he loved the Sea. Apparently Tolkien also identified Pelargir with Venice. All in all I think it's a far better residence for an aquatic Maia.)

And if it turns out also to be dangerous or otherwise not to our liking... well, it's on the way to Umbar anyway.

[X] Go West and South to Umbar?

Current tally
[X] 1 Go North to Rohan?: (dreadis)
[X] 5 Go West and South to Umbar?: (shaderic, whelo, Silversun17, theunderbolt, theweepingman)
[X] 2 Settle in Osgiliath?: (Xicree, King Prussia)
[X] 1 Pelargir (Ampersandwich)

[X] Go West and South to Umbar

It was tempting... very tempting to settle down in Osgiliath.

This was the heart of civilization, and you had always dealt well with creature comforts. This was where the politics was going to be, where things were decided.

That was the entire problem, it was the heart of civilization. Here, there were elves who remembered you, with their bright eyes that saw all. Here, the blood of old was strong. More than that, they remembered Sauron.

They remembered well his guile and role in the downfall of Númenor. Of the temple to Melkor, of the sacrifice of their ancient kin by those who Sauron bewitched. They would be on the watch for your kin, here of all places.

And thus, you tarried for a bit... soaking in the ambiance before venturing forth from the city with its soaring towers of white marble and granite. A great outcry spreading behind you in the distance.

You forced forced yourself to stay the course and not listen. For if you stayed now, you would find another reason to stay later on... and thus, you had to leave.

Down meandering roads, you flew. A wisp of wind that was not wind, over and around travelers on foot, on horses, and wagons alike.

Eventually, you catch sight of Umbar, the miasma is thick here. An unseen and unfelt fog of malice and darkness left by Sauron long ago before he was captured and taken to Númenor as a prize by the twenty-fifth and last king of Númenor, Ar-Pharazôn.

The city was a fortress harbor that watched for danger both at sea and from land, across the fields that fed it.

As you entered Umbar, you felt yourself relaxing as there were no cunning and bright eyes that could pierce your mortal seeming. There was no elf friend, nor elf here. Instead, here were the mortal men that you were accustomed to. Here were those of Númenor, who held loyalty not to the Kings who ruled from Osgiliath, but to their lords who still 'swore' to the old ways.

Their fealty was to the last king of Númenor, Ar-Pharazôn.

More than that, the signs were well hidden, but there were small shrines to Melkor hidden in homes.

This discovery was a delight for you. As was the fact that the entertainment here was closer to that found in the kingdoms to the East, where Sauron held sway. Drugs was consumed alongside pipe-weed, here and there were the harlots and slatterns. And for the nobles and the moneyed, there were courtesans and mistresses alongside the smokey haze of more... exotic drugs burned as incense.

Here, you decided.

Here, you would settle for a time.

The only question was your mortal seeming.

You well remembered the she-elves of old, their power to change the minds of those they encounter with but a look. To sway the minds of heroes and kings alike. You would, for now, don a raiment of beauty and power, and master Umbar subtly.

So, you've found the city that is going to be your starting point.

Now comes character appearance.

Then style of play in terms of claiming the city. And well... not tomorrow... gathering power and becoming a world power. Perhaps, even the Third Dark Lord or Lady.

You had plans, of course. After all, there wasn't much pleasure or contentment to remain as you were; unclad in the raimen of the world. Such a state did not permit you to touch the world and in return be touched.

Worse, you could not enjoy the pleasures of the world... such as food, strong drinks, and the various other delightful sensations available to a physical.

You scoured the city of Umbar for... inspiration.

And you were not disappointed. Here in this city, there had been few if any who have met an elf, let alone a she-elf. All they knew of elves were that they were more physically capable than mortal men, and far more attractive.

With the standards of what the men and women of Umbar found attractive... you had to admit that if an elf were to walk the streets of Umbar, it was likely that he or she would be deemed to be a half-elf or a particularly ugly elf to not possess vast tracts of land.

Was it any wonder then in 'honor' of the she-elves you had met that you assumed a form that the humans of Umbar found attract. With the only sign of you not being an elf being the lack of the long slender pointy ears?

Slipping into the raiment of the world, to give yourself physical form... that was easily done. What was not so easily done was ensuring that your true nature as one of the Maiar did not shine forth in the form of elemental or more exotic effects.

Sauron was a master at this, and you had to admit that you weren't too shabby at this.

Forming a body filled with the bones of the world, the breath of the open skies, with the blood of the ever flowing sea, and heating heart of flame... that was easy, as was making sure that you were clad in a dress and bearing a reasonable amount of money.
