The Fic That Hooked You: And How Bad Was It?

Actually I kinda started with TES fics from Chorrol.com (Is that still a thing?)

I was browsing the UESPwiki and saw a link.

That was mostly as a contrast to the game though not a hobby in itself. Then after switching to ff.net I think I was browsing someones profile and they had a Naruto fic ad it went on from there.

It was Inuyasha stuff for me, back about... goodness was it really nine years ago? Shit time has flown.

But the story(ies) in particular that got me in the beginning were One Month For Romance and Two Months to Live by Corisu Li. And checking back, they're so old that the author has actually taken them down from FF.net since the last time I even looked at them, and one of them is on freaking Mediaminer. There's a blast from the past for me.

The half-hanyou thing eventually dragged me into Naruto where I branched through the many many terrible stories with the "Dark!Naruto" descriptor until I eventually developed actual taste, moved onto Harry Potter, Bleach, Sailor Moon, Evangelion, and the other usual suspects.

First fix that I actually remember was an Inuyasha fic where Kagome begins turning into a hanyou. She ends up with her own magic sword called Aoi, and she and Inuyasha get together.

Funny how things are that I can remember exactly where and when I read it. Especially since it wasn't that good, even then.

The first stuff I was actively seeking out was shoujo ai pairings on ShoujoAi.net. Totally Spies femmeslash... No idea if they hold up, but preteen Ziel seemed to like them. Probably should have sent up some red flags for me that I was like, "girl on girl? Awesome! No nasty guys in here!"

Ended up getting into the MSTs that Studio Eyrie did, even if I didn't realize they counted as fanfics at the time. Those are what really drew me in, I would say. And they were so fucking bad... Goddamn Neon Exodus Evangelion levels of bad.

Considering I'm almost as long as Psyckosama... I DO remember it started with Ranma fanfics because Naruto (there weren't many other series either besides Sailor Moon...) was definitely not around then. And hey, some of those early fics were Psyckosama's! What an interesting coincidence. Still, some hold nostalgia... Though I can't even remember WHEN exactly I started... sometime during my high school years... between my Freshmen and Junior years... so between '98-'01...

...huh.

Turnabout Is Fair Play?

Same, hell I think All My Outers was the first SM fic I'd read

One of my good ideas that never really went anywhere due to... well... it's about that time I discovered the Anime Addventure and there went several years of my life. By the time I left that place the name Ranma made me want to projectile vomit.

As it's pretty much a Dead Fic at this point I'll spoil the ending just to add some closure.

There was no cure for the potion except for time. It only caused severe short and slowly dwindling moderate term infatuation. The idea was to send them on quest after innate pointless quest to keep them busy until the potion wore off. If they actually fell in love during the meantime she'd let them know the truth. If they didn't, they'd have just grown apart during the adventure.

I started and discovered fanfics completely by accident, I was on some Eragon fansite looking for info on the fourth and found a link saying something like see what people think will happen in it. That linked to some Eragon fanfics and one of the first ones I clicked on linked to the copy on FFN and everything spiraled out from there. I have no idea what my first fics were, I know that while I briefly existed in the Eragon section I very quickly moved to Harry Potter where I've since read pretty much all of the classics and generally stupid huge amounts of stories. For stories that I really don't look back at too fondly there are two strongest in my mind though but they came long after I started, they are Emerald Flight by Megamatt and generally most of Mist of Shadows stuff. The first because of reasons I really can't remember and the second because they tended to fall into horrible messes towards the end despite some reasonably interesting premises and Amelia speed updating.

Also definite supported of Bella/Alice, I was into that for a while. The most notable story I remember being this one, involving adult characters with a plot like a soap opera and no vampires or supernatural elements I have no idea how well it holds up. That's the most memorable one to me, then again I have a soft spot for fluff and I feel like it had it. I'll read essentially anything though so don't trust me totally, as long as it's written and not horribly so I'll read it.

Turnabout Is Fair Play?

I honestly don't recall. I don't think that's it, but I could be wrong. The fic I read was... I think on a geocities site in like 2005. So it could be that fic, but I don't recall it. Maybe it got rewritten at some point, because I'm flipping through the chapters at random and nothing's ringing a bell. From what I remember, the thing I read wasn't as well written as Turnabout.

Goddamn, Inuyasha is an asshole, isn't he? Actually, all the characters in that series are pretty damn unlikable...

Edit: No, it's definitely not it. Read through a couple of the later chapters and it's not. I would have remembered all the weird talk of bitches and mates.

I can't exactly remember what was the first fic that I've read or kept reading, but one of them that I still occasionally go back for is the fics from eyrie.net.

Honestly, it was wish fulfillment like crazy, but it was written well so I kept reading it.

These days though, I'm stuck reading and re-reading Ash of the Past (found on SB and FF.net). It's hilarious!

It's Rumiko Takashshi, what did you expect? Sympathetic, likable people?

There's a reason "Raging Douchebag + Abusive Bipolar Megabitch" used to be called a "Takahashi Romance"

My first two fanfics were Seras' Queen of Monsters and gibbousmoons She Who Skitters In Shadows, about a year and a half back when I found Worm. Worm's fanfiction section is also how I was found SpaceBattles, too.

Seras' fic was kinda painful to read even when I first read it; so... many... typos.... Like, seriously. The plot wasn't the greatest either, but it was two fandoms I likes (StarCraft and Worm), so that's why I read it.

Gibb may say he regrets SWSiS, but I liked it a lot. I'm listing it because it was one of my first fics, not because I thought it was bad. I'm a bit sad that it died, but oh well, it happens.

I got into fan fiction when I wanted more Dresden files, I don't remember being 'hooked' until i branched into the HP fan fiction, that damned megamatt09 with those awesome HP/Supergirl crosses, but now looking back I love the pairings but i Can't stand his writing style :(

Naruto for me. The first one was actually a descent fic. It was about Naruto going through 'Demon Training' earlier the canon, around the final years of academy. No obvious basing or any of the usual cliches. I forgot it's name.

I actually managed to resist the call of fanfiction for a surprisingly long time. "If I wanted to read I would pick up a book" were my thoughts as a teenager, and I spent most of my time on the computer wathing LPs, gaming, or searching for porn. Wasn't until... 2 years ago I was bored enough to google search warhammer 40k fanfic. Found Shinji and 40k and loved it (I have yet to watch Eva) but lost motivation on reading it because it hadn't been updated for a while. Perused a bit through the rest of the 40k section and minor fandoms like FoZ and Gurren Laggan but lost interest after a few days. Months later I would come back and search for a decent NaruHina fic and found tons. My first was The Uzumaki Tales: Return of the Whirlpool, and I've re-read it about 3 times. Each time it's worse than the last, but it's still not a bad read. Haven't stopped since then.

Sometimes you finally get that constructive crit you asked for forty thousand words in, and you suddenly realize that you messed up so many things. I could continue it, but honestly I should have ended that story earlier, and cut out a lot of the extraneous plot elements.

I'm glad you liked it though!

As I recall, my first fanfic was DM of the Rings after it was completed, followed quickly by Darths and Droids, followed by TvTropes, and then I won't even try to remember what was next with all the options that opened up.

My first fics were Naruto and Rosario + vampire crossovers. From there I branched out across fanfiction net and got into a lot of bad Bleach and Naruto crossover, during this period I developed I liking for Naruko and most genderbend stories in general. Eventually I discovered the nasu verse, or to be more specific Fate/stay night and haven't really looked back since. Got involved with SB and SV around the time SV was made through looking for some Worm fics, and then found QQ through a certain innocent Tanuki's quests.

To be entirely honest I am not sure weather to thank him or curse him for that.

Hmm. I'm not really sure. I first found SB off of TvTropes fanfic recs at some point in 2012. I'm not sure what My original fanfiction.net account was, but checking my old unused emails (which, ye gods, have thousands of unread emails, half of which seem to be just updates from manga scan sites for manga I don't even read anymore), I did manage to find the password and username for my second one.

My old fanfic.net profile was apparently made early in the summer of 2012. Gods, I was apparently one of those people who post a ridiculous amount of stupid shit one there user page. Just looking through it quickly, I have: most of the Evil Overlord List, (and the other genre savvy lists), a punch of stupid "man laws", two surveys, that thing about a student who wrote a paper on hell with a punchline about having sex with someone last night, and a bunch of other stupid things.

The first fic is a bunch of snippets by the guy who wrote [Not Quite As Planned]. The next fic is actually EarthScorpion's [The Fearful Void], which isn't that bad. Maybe I did have okay taste.

After that is a Naruto fic I can't remember at all called [Sage of the Seventh Path], which doesn't have a summary that gives off a particularly good impression.
Most people would have called it "The Worst Day Of Their Lives". But to Naruto It's The start of something wonderful. After all, what's good doesn't have to be pleasant and once you hit rock bottom the only way to go is up, right? Watch as one bad day...saves the world. Naru/Hina. Minor AU Chapters 1-20 31-33 BETA'd
Still, first impressions aren't everything, so looking at the other information I can gatehr without actually startign the first chapter, "Sage of the Seventh Path" is apparently a M rated 129,000 or so word Adventure/Romance story, with the main characters listed as Naruto and Hinata (paired together), and interestingly enough Jiraiya and Sasuke. Maybe it isn't so bad after all.

Opening it up, I notice adjective!character, and quickly nope the fuck out of there

[Sage of the Seventh Path]

I remember that one! I liked it well enough, Naruto got a rinnegan when he was like 6 yet he is still struggling with unlocking most of it's powers 6 years later, Sasuke isn't bashed to hell and back, and Jiraiya and Kakashi both help raise Naruto. There are definitely worse fics out there.
