Yeah, and to force stronger reactions, they didn't tell the cast before filming the last scene that Henry was dead, and only told Gary Burghoff the line that he was supposed to deliver in the surgery tent right before he was supposed to say it (so poor Gary was legitimately shocked when delivering the news, and so were the others - killing off star characters was very unusual at the time).

Doubly so in the fact the he was on his way home. Everyone knew the actor was leaving the show, but they thought the character just got his tour ended and was enjoying his happily ever after.
 
Yeah, real life is the movie that could not be made ten years ago, because it was too bizarre and unbelievable.
