1993 Nissan 300ZX convertible

For the 1993 model year, Nissan's Z-car gained a factory-sanctioned drop-top version for the first time. (Some third-party customizers did chop the tops off of previous generations of Z-cars.)

The convertible conversion was performed by specialty car conversion specialist American Sunroof Company, who cut the top off of a coupe, installed a convertible top (with the decklid lifting up to act as the top boot),) and structural reinforcements, including a roll bar. Only naturally aspirated versions of the 300ZX were turned into convertibles.

However, the convertible was not among the best sellers amongst the Z32 lineup, as it was one of the priciest versions, costing over $7,000 more than the base coupe, and just a couple hundred less than the top-of-the-line turbo model, while the structural reinforcements did not make up for the loss of rigidity caused by chopping the roof off, leading to what many considered excessive chassis flex and shaking for a sports car (evidentally a common problem with many of the convertible sports cars offered during the late 1980s & early 1990s, which were originally designed as coupes. Only about 500 convertibles were sold during 1993, and sales figures did not improve for the ragtop version during the remainder of the Z32's run in the North American market.
