This may be late but hope this helps you.

Based on my experience after upgrading my phone for 2 years, you can future proof yourself by getting the highest memory available. I had a phone with 64 GB storage and that quickly got filled up due to apps increasing in size and also the bloat the phone brands put on the system.

You can also try to check the specifications of the phone youre looking for in GSMArena to give yourself an expectation on what to get. Although it is kind of hard for me to know what is a good phone gpu and cpu so I base it on reviews of the site. I myself went for a mid tier (in terms of performance) phone with the highest available internal storage and an sdcard slot.
