Public service announcement:
My hometown (Townsville, North Queensland) is currently undergoing what's generally known as a fuckton of rain. In the last week, we've had an entire year's worth of rain (this is in no way an exaggeration). Flooding is rampant; two friends of mine recently had to take refuge in my spare bedroom because their flat is basically under water. They've since found more permanent housing, but their dogs have not. (Please ignore the barking coming from my carport). Last I heard, about 800 houses were flooded.

Fortunately, I seem to be in an area where flooding isn't happening (touch wood). I'm reminded of the rain by water dripping on the ceiling from above, so yay.

Currently, I have electricity, internet, my own bed to sleep in, and food. Any of this could change over the next few days, so while I will still be writing and posting stories, if I suddenly seem to go off the air, this is why. On an entirely unrelated note, my laptop crapped itself unexpectedly for no good reason (save that it was five years old and on its last legs). Fortunately, I managed to get a loaner from the same friends who took refuge in my spare bedroom (the floodwaters were rising and they got out with only minutes to spare) which is running Windows 7. Once the floodwaters go down, I'll be swapping this out for the latest device from Office Works (woo!).

So, to recap: Lots of rain, I'm mostly okay for the moment, we shall see.

Townsville is pretty dry. We only usually get about 40-50 inches of rain a year. We exceeded that.

Ross River Dam spends most of its time half-empty. They had to open the sluice gates not once, but several times, to release excess water (at one point, it was holding 247% of its rated capacity). They tried to do this at low tide. Didn't help. Something like 2000 houses got flooded through that alone.

We are now officially a disaster area.

Fortunately, I'm still (mostly) good. No floodwaters, still haz electricity and internetz. The dogs have been retrieved by their owners.

On the downside, my car crapped itself (random part failed, totally unrelated to the flooding) so I have to wait till the garages reopen before I can get it looked at. Ugh.

Oh well. Back to writing.

Cheers Ack! Also I remember when it rained hard enough in St. Pete that the streets would flood high enough for my neighbors to break out their jetskis and around the neighborhood :D

Same. So, the City of Townsville actually exists. Wow.

Sadly, I doubt they have cute little girls with superpowers doing search and rescue, but the article gives the impression that the actual SAR workers are on the ball there.

We have an army base, so there's been 5500 soldiers assisting the emergency services. There's only been two confirmed deaths from the flooding; they were interrupted in the act of breaking into a liquor store, and escaped police pursuit by jumping into floodwaters. Their bodies were later recovered.

Hopefully, the worst of the flooding is over now. We should be clear by Friday.

For anyone who hasn't voted on this thread before, the voting rules go as follows:

1) UP TO six votes. I will not count anything extra, and a write-in will likely be ignored (if I want to write a different story, I will, but at my own discretion). Suggestions are welcome, but I am under no obligation to carry them out. And just remember, the more stories I am writing, the longer it will take for your favourites to roll back around.
2) First vote is worth six points, second is worth five, and so on.
3) You can't vote twice on the same story. The voting code will count the last vote and ignore previous ones.
