With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

Ahh, romantic advice from an empath.

Romantic advice from OL... Oh boy... I'm not saying he's doomed but I'm not not saying that either.

No, she left after finishing with Mars.

She was... spinning up Mars' core to make it go faster and make its magnetosphere worth a damn, right? I thought they said it would take a while? Did she really manage it in... what? Several months? I thought 'a while' meant years if not decades, not months?

Paul has been in a romantic relationship for several months now, so he may honestly be one of the few people that Sivana knows is in a successful romantic relationship.

There is his son, but having your son help you with your love life can be very, very awkward, to the point that even Sivana may understand that.

She did have a power ring, so that would have most likely cut the time down considerably.

Paul and Jade's 'romantic relationship'... *sigh* Let's just say I'm not seeing it and leave it at that.

Assuming it is a romantic advice he's after. Just because Zamarons are obsessed with yandere side of "love" doesn't mean that it is the only kind. He could be just thinking about his family.

I guess. I just thought it would take longer.

I have to agree with this. I always felt that Jade and Regenade seemed to have a more loving relationship than Jade and Paul. The latter always felt more like... a patient falling in love with his/her nurse/doctor. Paul just goes out of his way to make her happy and feel fulfilled, but I understand that that's part of how he has to operate with his ring.

I know we don't see them together very often, or know how often they communicate. The last time we did (if I remember), Paul was sharing that meal with her and her team, so I'm sure there are lots of little moments like this that we never see. But still... it feels like Paul is always the one feeling the emotions, because I don't remember how often (or the last time), I saw any love-colored text from Jade - though I'll admit that Paul, being an empath, wouldn't be with her if he didn't see/feel it.

I don't really understand why he allowed Dox to send him back to Earth, when he just could have asked to be stationed with Jade's team. I mean, Paul is their best Lantern, and he's been sidelined. Granted, he's getting a lot of shit done on Earth, and it would have been harrowed without him, but it makes no sense (to me) to keep Paul from fighting in the war the OL's are invested in.

But Paul does seem to be a people pleaser. I think I've read a number of people who've complained about it, and I have to share that sentiment. Again, this is probably more about how he interacts with the Orange Light more than anything, but I feel like it just makes him less of a character.

Not so much 'more loving' as... I dunno how to express it... 'shown better' perhaps?

Kinda. Over a span of (in-story) months he went from her enemy to her parole officer/therapist to her friend to her boyfriend. But it doesn't feel (to me at least) like he made this last transition. Maybe they are genuinely in love with each other but I just don't see it in the text. Which is super weird because I can kinda see it in Grayven's episodes.

Paul just goes out of his way to make her happy and feel fulfilled, but I understand that that's part of how he has to operate with his ring.

This, exactly. It doesn't help that she spends soooo much time offscreen and that Paul barely even thinks of her. Or, to be more specific, he does think of her and it's always in violet but it feels... awkward. Tackled on. Like Zoat remembers his SI is supposed to be in love with this side character and lampshades it.

I don't remember how often (or the last time), I saw any love-colored text from Jade - though I'll admit that Paul, being an empath, wouldn't be with her if he didn't see/feel it.

This as well. I guess it's a problem of 'Show, Don't Tell'. Which, again, is kinda weird because Zoat can and has shown it before. Just not with Paul and Jade. He seems to have far more chemistry with... just about every other 'dark/villain chick' he accidentally makes Social Links with.

One of the reasons Dox asked him to go away was so that he could establish his own authority over the Corps, which Paul may disrupt with his actions.

Paul has also been involved in Corps activities, like going on that diplomatic mission that was attacked by a Qwardian.

He'll most likely be more involved once they really start fighting.

Currently they may have just had a few skirmishes and were helping their allies secure themselves from Reach influence, but once the war gets really started then he will really get involved.

As for being on Jade's team, we'll that's a bit overkill if you ask me, and one of the reasons Jade wanted to join the Darkstars was so that she could have some independence and prove that she can also take on big threats without her boyfriend being there. If he was there all the time, or even on a lot of her missions, then she may feel like he's smothering her.

I think one of the reasons we saw more violet and romantic scenes on the renegade side between renegade and his Jade is that they're both very similar to each other, so they just kinda clicked, while on the paragon side that version of Jade and Paul were very different to each other.

One was an assassin while the other was a superhero that didn't do all that many violent or borderline evil things, like renegade sometimes did.

I think paragon and his Jade really do love each other, but they're a bit different so their romance may be awkward and something that neither of them are used to.

Help him get back together with his wife? I thought he understood that sometimes relationships don't work out and accepted that fact?

The only reason they separed was because he started to go after Captain Marvel. If he stops going after kids... there is a chance.

This Doctor loves science more than being a villain.

I think the reason they separated was that he killed a lot of people and generally doesn't care if he hurts people with his experiments, not that he hurts children, though that's also on the list of reasons.

She may not even know that Captain Marvel is a kid.

If he stops killing people then there may be a chance.

Yes, bit of a miscalculation on the Queen's part. Unfortunately, real-world equivalents are still just inside the 20-year range for rule 8, so... Except maybe the Vietnam War. I have the feeling this will be remembered by the Sheeda in the same light...
How about the Seminole Wars? They remain the only case in the various wars with Native Americans in the 19th Century that didn't end with the tribe in question either wiped out or surrendering to the US government.

"-are in the process of Harrowing the Earth. They're not doing all that well so far, but my understanding was that you were planning on slaughtering them. Not to put a too finer point on it, that was why I've been cooperating with you."

"That sounds like something you should have gotten in writing, young man. I only said that I wanted someone new and challenging to fight."

I have to say, that was a pretty great exchange.

The SI may have been able to get Dr. Sivana to talk to him politely, but Sivana is certainly not a tame mad scientist. Sivana's going to do what Sivana feels like doing, and no you can't count on him. Should have got it in writing indeed.

Wait, was Vaermina just right about something? Cheezy petes, I need to sit down..

I figured he'd wanna take them out because they went after his family. They didn't die in this universe, but the attack still made it personal and seems like the kind of thing that would make him mad.

His children are still alive and this was probably not the first time someone tried to kill them, so he may not be all that mad about it because he's used to it.

The question to ask here...

Why doesn't Paul just trade Melmoth to Sivana in exchange for his anti-sheeda tech.

I haven't really met President Jonathan Horne before.

Oh, we spoke very briefly at the ceremony marking the signing into law of the Sophoncy Recognition Act, but… I can't vote in American elections, I can't be arrested and I work at a job that's been treated as being 'outside' of the law for the past seventy years. I know his Republican challenger Senator Henry Knight rather better, and… Friendly as he's being, empathic vision shows exactly how little he actually cares about any of the causes he claims to champion moment to moment. Jonathan Horne is a good deal more genuine, but…

If I was American? I'd be voting Ron.

Still, despite the country being in the middle of a low-intensity war on its home territory, he was willing to meet with Crazy-Orange-Snake Man and Dresses-Like-a-Bat Man at very short notice. Which is just as well, because I'm going to have to arrange a lot of these meetings-

"Batman? Orange Lantern? The President will see you now."

-today.

We follow the presidential aide into one of the bunker's meeting rooms, and I note with approval that in addition to the Secret Service agents on duty there are also a couple of Atlantean wizards and… Lance Corporal Reid, staff in hand. I suppose that's about as covered as they can get, though to be honest 'Specialist Lance' isn't all that threatening without his god-tier upgrade.

President Horne is sitting at a table with… Father Time, General Lane and a few politicians whose names and faces flicker through my mind as my rings fill me in. I'm… Having trouble reading Father Time, but the emotions of everyone else appear to be in line with what I'd expect from serious, disciplined professionals.

Batman walks to the end of the table opposite the president and remains standing, so I follow his lead and fall in next to him. Horne nods politely.

"Gentlemen. I'm sorry if things are a little rushed, but I'm sure we're all very busy right now. You said this was urgent?"

Batman glances at me, and I take that as my cue.

"Yes, Mister President. As quickly as I can, last year I was invited by Doctor Beautia Sivana to her annual family gathering. While there I met Doctor Thaddeus Bodog Sivana-"

A couple of Cabinet Secretaries twitch. I think he once tried to use one of them as a nuclear suicide bomber.

"-and heard him decide to redirect his efforts from fighting superheroes to fighting the Sheeda. I've been keeping tabs on him since, and he's done more or less what he said he was going to. His younger children Thaddeus Sivana Junior and Georgia Sivana have been doing the same. He's given me records of the actions he's taken in this regard and I've…"

I take paper copies of the summaries out of subspace and deposit them in front of them.

"Confirmed these as best I can. He's been clear with me, however, that he's not trying to beat the Sheeda so much as see how much of an intellectual challenge they can present him with. When I remonstrated with him on that point he said that he was willing to go on the offensive, but that he'd want something in return."

General Lane's eyes narrow.

"And what might that be?"

"A pardon, for him and his two younger children."

Lane actually gapes for a moment.

"Are you serious?"

"I'm reporting what he told me. If you mean, 'is he serious', yes, I believe so. The only thing he wants more than he wants to continue to practise mad science on the innocent people of the world is to get back together with his ex-wife."

"He's a mass murderer."

"Yes, General. In addition, every country on the planet has to pardon him for it to 'count'."

The Director of National Intelligence shuffles in his seat, takes a deep breath in and out and raises and lowers his eyebrows.

"That's… A lot. And… What exactly would we get in return?"

"Weapons that can destroy every Sheeda creature and abomination we've seen so far. Technology to block their portals, detect and board their ships and a type of energy shield that nullified their preferred range weapons. Use of robotic soldiers that come with all of that built in, plus access to his entire back catalogue of weapons and equipment if there's something you think might be helpful."

Lane leans forward, his eyes wide and focused on me.

"And you know where this guy is?"

"Yes, General."

"For how long?"

"Since early last year."

"Are there any other mass murderers you've been talking to?"

"None pertinent to the ongoing Harrowing, though my personal kill count is in at least six figures."

That causes a few flashes of unease, and I.. consider that I don't actually send reports to either the US government or the Security Council. Or the Themysciran senate or Queen Hippolyta. I've.. never checked what the League passes on about team activities or the activities of team members. Given that Batman has used us as a Charter bypass on more than one occasion, probably not that much.

Horne leafs through the dossier, breathing slowly but deeply. He looks… Shrivelled, frankly. "I… See the Sheeda had agents in the Security Council."

"There have been spine riders on Earth for at least the last century. Probably longer. Airport security doesn't include magic scans."

"How..?" He pushes the dossier away slightly. "How.. long would it take Doctor Sivana to get his technology into the field?"

"He already field-tested the robots in New Zealand. Two platoons and a long-range teleporter are ready to go now. Most of the technology is ready to go now; he builds it, tests it, then sticks it on a shelf while he works on the next thing."

Horne looks me in the eyes. He… Looks genuinely sad.

"Do you know how many people he's killed? Or tried to kill?"

"Yes."

"Do you think we should take this deal?"

I could say that his kill count -while significant- is less than seven billion. I could say that after years of everyone failing to take one mad scientist off the table he's offering to take himself off. I… Know that now I could say it to the families of his victims, and I know that they'd never accept that rationale.

"Yes."

"Thank you for bringing this to my attention." His eyes dip back to the dossier. "You're going to be talking to other heads of state?" I nod. "I'll need to discuss this with people before making a decision. You'll know before the end of the day."

I nod.

"Thank you, Mister President."

marking the signing into law of the Sophoncy Recognition

maybe 'into law the Sophoncy'

'the bunker's'

Well hope OL figres out what this bastard is up to before it's too late.

. The only thing he wants more than he wants to continue to practice

maybe remove one of those 'wants' , make it 'he wants more than to continue'

"Are there any other mass murderers you've been talking to?"

Well Lex Luthor and several members of his Corps.

This is why you go the Melmoth/Mammon route when dealing with crazy supervillains, granted Sivana may be better prepared than those two were for OL now.

When Paul mentioned Father Time, it got me thinking if SHADE is going to make a move in the near future in response to the Sheeda, the Sivanas, and now Orange Lantern, especially since Paul just admitted to having killed at the very least 100,000 people.

"How..?" He pushes to dossier away slightly. "How.. long would it take Doctor Sivana to get his technology into the field?"
Should that be 'He pushes the dossier away slightly.' ?
