With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

Alan shakes his head again, but this time there's a small smile. "It's a shame more mad scientists aren't like him. Oh, how's that..? Therapy workshop Ted Kord was running coming along?"
Can someone refresh my memory what Therapy Workshop did Ted Kord create? And possibly link to when it's mentioned?

Can someone refresh my memory what Therapy Workshop did Ted Kord create? And possibly link to when it's mentioned?
I think it is the think tank that Paul encouraged Ted to start in an effort to get both sane geniuses and mad scientists to use their genius for beneficial purposes.

She snarls. "A Green Lantern

♂️How many times is the belief he is a green lantern going to be played in this story? I mean the one species is suppose to be color blind, but that is what the lantern icons are for!

Edit: on other news, why is QQ changing my facepalm emoji into a male symbol?

I can't answer due to modern politics.

Edit: on other news, why is QQ changing my facepalm emoji into a male symbol?
I assume you were attempting to use a male facepalm emoji, which is represented in code as a facepalm emoji modified by a male symbol. And then I imagine the facepalm emoji got stripped out because the site's backend thought it was corrupt data -- the symbol isn't representable as a 16-bit code point since most emoji are outside of the Unicode Base Multilingual Plane.

Might this be the Universe where green lanterns had a civil war against the Guardians and they created the Golden Lantern Corps?

It is metaphysically impossible for Green Lanterns to exist in that universe. There isn't an emotional spectrum, there's just one source of power and it was moved to Earth and changed from green to gold.

So like a dog being chipped?

Works for me.

Maybe he can also add a function that sends a shock of pain whenever he does something stupid.

Granted, it's likely that John will either develop an immunity to it or the thing will run out of power.

Or it will go Michael Chichton and he;ll get off on the electrical shock ala the Terminal Man.

"I'-"

Scenery skips and the trees around me shudder as whoever-this-is craters the ground with her fist armour.

"-m-"

My field of view skips again and now I'm directly behind the head of one of the Amazos as the Woman in Grey careens into the sky.

Construct armour.

"-not sure-"

And she's back and my armour is a spider's web of cracks as her fists move faster than I can keep track even in an accelerated frame of mind! Deploy kinetic shield generators inside the construct armour and exit through the back drop the armour and-.

And she flies at the kinetic barrier fists first and it holds, flaring into solidity. Though it's doing that unpleasant flashing thing that the ones I used in Argentina did when they got ridiculously overstretched. This version should be more resilient but my brief test with Kal-El led me to conclude that Amanda Waller's speech about how Superman couldn't break out of Belle Reve was double bullshit.

"Hello, I'm from parallel universe sixteen. I'm very sorry if-"

She eases off on the punching, watching me like a hawk.

"-I broke local law coming here, but-."

"Ignorance of the law is no excuse."

"Actually, I think this situation is more like being shipwrecked than anything else, and you can't get arrested for improper entry if your ship-"

This time she pulls back her right fist and drives from the shoulder!

"-sank."

I transition back as she drifts forward.

"I've still got you for resisting arrest and assault."

"Not unless standards are very different here to what they are at home." I consider shrugging, but she wouldn't be able to see inside my armour and I'm not taking it off. "You haven't formally identified yourself or provided evidence that you have arrest authority."

She frowns, clearly offended. "What?"

"We used laminated cards with a name, serial number and a crest indicating which organisation we work for? If you use something else-."

"Interceptor, Justice Society International."

"I'm sorry, did you say 'Justice Society International'?"

"So now you know who we are?"

"In my timeline, the Justice Society of America shut down in the fifties. I've still got no idea who you are, and you haven't presented me with an-"

The scenery skips again.

"-y identification, it's automatic, stop trying to hit me and try talking like a civilised person.".

"Lanterns aren't allowed on Earth."

"I'll leave as soon as my-." Oh. "Oh."

"Oh?"

"We were trying to get to Earth Six Six Six, which this clearly isn't. But since we don't know why we ended up here, it's… Probably not safe to.. use it until.. we work out why."

"Story falling apart already?"

"You detected our arrival. Presumably, you can narrow down the sort of teleportation device we used. I appreciate-" I gesture to the Amazos with my right hand. "-the rapid response squad, but since we're clearly not violent, it should be safe for you to call in a forensic team."

"Alien law enforcement organisations are not allowed on Earth."

"Are alien diplomatic officials?"

"You're not an alien."

"No, but you recognise the ring."

"We don't have diplomatic contact with Oa. They don't seem to get the whole 'this isn't your planet' thing."

"Serious question, I don't mean this as an insult: are you colour blind?"

"Power rings are Oan technology."

"Power rings are Maltusian technology, of which the grandly-titled 'Guardians of the Universe' are one faction. To the best of my knowledge-"

I try feeling the honden, and it's there, but no one else is drawing on it. No other active Lanterns at all.

"-the Orange Lantern Corps doesn't exist in this parallel, so I'm not trying to police anything. However, I still hold the rank of Illustres, and I still report directly to Controller Hinon Hee Hananan and no maltusian really likes dealing with aliens."

"Do you have any documentation to prove that?"

"Ah… I have a Themysciran diplomatic passport, but the Controllers sort of assume that the ring is.. enough."

She considers this for a moment. I can clearly see her desire for direct action, firmly bound by her drive for order. "You'll stay here while we bring in a team?"

I fan my arms out to the sides. "Happy to."

She's still staring at me, and I'm not sure if she's just naturally confrontational and can't cope with other means of interacting or if I'm actually doing something-

"What about the Green Arrow cosplayer, the Black Canary cosplayer and the creepy guy in the coat?

-suspicious.

"Green Arrow Sixteen, Black Canary Sixteen… Two, and John Constantine Sixteen. Ah… They're not diplomatic officials, but I can make them my staff?"

"You expect-."

"Making friends already, Paul?"

Alan floats up besides me and Interceptor actually backs off, her face falling slack.

"Commander?"

Alan look puzzled. "Ah, not that I know of? I'm from a parallel universe."

"Blue Lantern, she works for Justice Society International. Guess who didn't disband in the fifties here?"

"I.. see." He takes a moment to absorb that. "Then howsabout we go and say 'hi' to me?"

I think Alan is going to get the chance to punch an evil version of himself in the face. This is assuming that my guess that this version of Earth is super xenophobic like Daxam is true.

This totally sounds like some kind of fascist, days of future past kind of parallel. Except, this Interceptor lady may possibly be Kryptonian? And I don't know how that fits.

I do love how the Illustres just completely sidestepped her desire to fight. What kind of gung ho operative is she that she didn't request a stand down or anything before trying to plaster him to the ground? That definitely seems like bad cop type of thing to do.

Considering that a regular sized Amazo was able increase its power to where it could move Oa across space, having multiple giant Amazos (even if more simple) would be a very good deterrent against Green Lanterns.

I wonder how much has changed due to the continuation and expansion of a WW2-era superhero organization, especially as to why this version of Earth is 'unfriendly' towards the Green Lanterns.

Shot in the dark prediction: The Green Lanterns came for Alan Scott's ring some time after WW2 and it did not go well. The fallout from this caused aliens and metahumans to be more in the public conscious which forced the JSA to expand and take on a policing role regarding aliens, metahumans, magic, or anything "not normal".

I wonder if the JSI would be interested in Lantern Rings that don't have any ties to the Guardians and Oa.

On another note...

I know that the Justice Lords continuity made an appearance with the Grayven timeline, but I don't remember if the main Paul timeline has had any contact with them.

If this version of the Justice Lords continuity also has a Paul with a Lantern Ring, it would be interesting to see how a Justice Lord <Insert Color> Lantern would operate or if that version of Paul is fighting against the Justice Lords.

Ah, the old auto-displacement defence protocol. Good and useful against most super-melee types. Well, unless they can fly as fast as you displace and have the senses to keep up with you. Then it becomes a giddy dance. :p

"-m-"

My field of view skips again and now I'm directly behind the head of one of the Amazos as the Woman in Grey careens into the sky.
Ah, if only she were obsessively aggressive enough to power-dive without checking her backstop. Then they'd likely be down one Amazo (because even simulated kryptonian toughness can only make you so durable.)

Construct armour.

"-not sure-"
Yeah, best pile on the defensive buffs, OL. I don't think you're dealing with an Earth 16 kryptonian here, who are seriously nerfed compared to some.

And she's back and my armour is a spider's web of cracks as her fists move faster than I can keep track even in an accelerated frame of mind! Deploy kinetic shield generators inside the construct armour and exit through the back drop the armour and-.

And, again, not all universe's kryptonians are equal. If Earth 16's are on the low-end, then something like pre-Crisis hit A rank, minimum. S-tier will always be Silver Age Superman and his 'shatter a solar system by sneezing, fly faster than time and make new powers as the plot demands' dickery.

"Hello, I'm from parallel universe sixteen. I'm very sorry if-"

She eases off on the punching, watching me like a hawk.
Well, at least she's hearing him out. Not a berserker, at least.

"-I broke local law coming here, but-."

"Ignorance of the law is no excuse."
...And that's the worst kind of bullshit. Accidents happen. Little hard to look up the laws of a place you didn't know existed five minutes ago.

"Actually, I think this situation is more like being shipwrecked than anything else, and you can't get arrested for improper entry if your ship-"

This time she pulls back her right fist and drives form the shoulder!
Aw, crap, she's busting out the Saitama Style: Serious Straight Punch!

"-sank."

I transition back as she drifts forward.
I can't imagine him doing that every time she goes after him is helping her temper any...

"I've still got you for resisting arrest and assault."

"Not unless standards are very different here to what they are at home." I consider shrugging, but she wouldn't be able to see inside my armour and I'm not taking it off. "You haven't formally identified yourself or provided evidence that you have arrest authority."
...He got you there, hon'.

She frowns, clearly offended. "What?"

"We used laminated cards with a name, serial number and a crest indicating which organisation we work for? If you use something else-."
Often in nice little billfolds that look damn dapper when you pull them out and flick them open.

"Interceptor, Justice Society International."

And there we go, enough information to lock onto the universe. Stsword called it yesterday.

"I'm sorry, did you say 'Justice Society International?"

"So now you know who we are?"
The timing is right enough that OL could have read the books before getting universe-displaced.

"In my timeline, the Justice Society of America shut down in the fifties. I've still got no idea who you are, and you haven't presented me with an-"

The scenery skips again.
...She's persistent, isn't she?

"-y identification, it's automatic, stop trying to hit me and try talking like a civilised person.".

"Lanterns aren't allowed on Earth."
Yes, we'd rather gathered that from your annoyance. Care to elaborate?

"I'll leave as soon as my-." Oh. "Oh."

"Oh?"
...Oh, shit, I just caught it too. This portal got shifted by John's interference - the Crystal he tossed. Will the timed check-in follow the same pathing, or aim for the original target universal coordinates?

"We were trying to get to Earth Six Six Six, which this clearly isn't. But since we don't know why we ended up here, it's… Probably not safe to.. use it until.. we work out why."

"Story falling apart already?"
Okay, tone it down there, Punchier. o_O Is 'Innocent until proven guilty' not a thing here anymore?

"You detected our arrival. Presumably, you can narrow down the sort of teleportation device we used. I appreciate-" I gesture to the Amazos with my right had. "-the rapid response squad, but since we're clearly not violent, it should be safe for you to call in a forensic team."

"Alien law enforcement organisations are not allowed on Earth."
Well, good for you. Neither OL nor Alan are law enforcement.

"Are alien diplomatic officials?"

"You're not an alien."
...Technically, he is alien to this universe. You didn't recognise him, so presumably there's no Paul running around with any kind of powers on this Earth. Doesn't stop him being out in space somewhere, but...

"No, but you recognise the ring."

"We don't have diplomatic contact with Oa. They don't seem to get the whole 'this isn't your planet' thing."
Okay, that is one thing the Earth 16 counterparts do have trouble with too. I'm sure OL can commiserate.

"Serious question, I don't mean this as an insult: are you colour blind?"

"Power rings are Oan technology."
Now, see, if you actually had contact with them beyond 'get off our lawn!', you might know otherwise.

"Power rings are Maltusian technology, of which the grandly-titled 'Guardians of the Universe' are one faction. To the best of my knowledge-"

I try feeling the honden, and it's there, but no one else is drawing on it. No other active Lanterns at all.
Pity Alan isn't proficient enough to do the same with his Emotional stronghold (The Tabernacle? The Cathedral? The joy of working blind...)

Nothing that would mean anything to you, I suspect. :V Seriously, lady, did you wake up in this mood, or has it just been a bad day?

"Ah… I have a Themysciran diplomatic passport, but the Controllers sort of assume that the ring is.. enough."

She considers this for a moment. I can clearly see her desire for direct action, firmly bound by her drive for order. "You'll stay here while we bring in a team?"
To be fair, where's he going to go?

I fan my arms out to the sides. "Happy to."

She's still staring at me, and I'm not sure if she's just naturally confrontational and can't cope with other means of interacting or if I'm actually doing something-
I mean, you do seem to have that effect on some people, OL, but this might indeed be normal for her. Who knows?

"What about the Green Arrow cosplayer, the Black Canary cosplayer and the creepy guy in the coat?

-suspicious.
Gee, lady. He's told you he's from an alternate universe. Can you do the math here, or...

"Green Arrow Sixteen, Black Canary Sixteen… Two, and John Constantine Sixteen. Ah… They're not diplomatic officials, but I can make them my staff?"

"You expect-."
Ah, OL. Looking for loopholes and cheat codes already.

"Making friends already, Paul?"

Alan floats up besides me and Interceptor actually backs off, her face falling slack.
Well, guess someone's a big man on campus around here. Logical, given Justice Society International...

"Commander?"

Alan look puzzled. "Ah, not that I know of? I'm from a parallel universe."
Which makes me wonder what shape the local Alan is in, if she isn't confused by any difference in age. I mean, Alan probably looks younger, but not that young, right?

"Blue Lantern, she works for Justice Society International. Guess who didn't disband in the fifties here?"

"I.. see." He takes a moment to absorb that. "Then howsabout we go and say 'hi' to me?"
Oh, this is about to get amusing. And possibly confusing for the locals. I approve. :D

Well, then. Looks like cooler heads prevailed and diplomancy worked. What's the bet if it were anyone other than OL, this would have ended with a super-brawl? That aside, it'll be interestign to see where this is going. Presumably, Constantine's wave-riding led them here because this is not the natural state of the universe. (Stsword covered the basics in the post where he called it.) So for them to leave, they'll probably have to break the spell, and retrieve the Trinity, fixing the timeline...

I gesture to the Amazos with my right had.
I gesture to the Amazos with my right hand.

Huh, maybe they are in the Tarot Trinity universe, or one based on it anyway.

I don't remember it being this bad, but the storyline was 13 years ago, so that's my excuse for being fuzzy on the details.

With no Superman the society was a bit more xenophobic, I remember that. Interceptor instead of Supergirl (of course, with no Superman, why would she call herself Supergirl?), even Martian Manhunter adventured as Space Ranger instead of admitting he was an alien.

2228672-space_rnger.jpg

So I guess Trinity was Days of Future Past DC edition.

Don't remember the giant Amazos at all though, you'd have thought that would have stuck with me.

Considering that a regular sized Amazo was able increase its power to where it could move Oa across space, having multiple giant Amazos (even if more simple) would be a very good deterrent against Green Lanterns.

DCAU Amazo is the most powerful depiction he's ever had, so that really should not be your default assumption.

Batman defeated an Amazo by putting putty over its eyes so it blew its own head off when it tried to use heat vision.

Flash once defeated an Amazo by phasing through its head and pulling its robot brain out.

One Amazo was defeated by the declaration that the JLA was disbanded.

One Amazo was defeated by copying Blue Beetle and that made it vulnerable to the Scarab's control.

So not all Amazos are built equally.

Considering that a regular sized Amazo was able increase its power to where it could move Oa across space, having multiple giant Amazos (even if more simple) would be a very good deterrent against Green Lanterns.
I think that is just a special case for the Justice League animated tv series, as most versions of Amazo can't get that strong.

Or, maybe SHADE, or whatever they're calling themselves in this universe, has ensured that this world and all its inhabitants are well under their control.

The timing is right enough that OL could have read the books before getting universe-displaced.
He should remember it, as that's the story where Konvikt originated from and Paul recognized him. Although it's possible that he's forgotten some of the details.

I think it's more "Aliens that try to mess with Earth" than "Aliens in general" that they have a problem with. Interceptor wasn't trying to arrest Paul for being an alien but for having an Oan Ring (and presumably because they don't like the Guardians messing with the rest of the universe).

This looks to be a version of the Trinity universe with no Superman, Wonder Woman or Batman.
JSI basically became a federal department after the House of Unamerican Activities and are basically the Initiative from the Marvel Civil War.
Intercept is Kara In Ze (another in the ever expanding Supergirl collection)

What kind of gung ho operative is she that she didn't request a stand down or anything before trying to plaster him to the ground? That definitely seems like bad cop type of thing to do

If she works for a fascist organization then her methods may be the standard.

My theory is the same as yours; bad experience with the GLC.

I know that the Justice Lords continuity made an appearance with the Grayven timeline, but I don't remember if the main Paul timeline has had any contact with them

Nope.

I think it's more "Aliens that try to mess with Earth" than "Aliens in general" that they have a problem with. Interceptor wasn't trying to arrest Paul for being an alien but for having an Oan Ring (and presumably because they don't like the Guardians messing with the rest of the universe).

The first one may be their official policy but that doesn't mean that they don't allow their xenophobia to take over.

And there we go, enough information to lock onto the universe. Stsword called it yesterday.

That explains why Constantine and friends were lead here; the magical alteration.

Okay, tone it down there, Punchier. o_O Is 'Innocent until proven guilty' not a thing here anymore?

Ehh, even if it is a thing that doesn't mean it will be applied.

That's true enough in our world, but seeing as this workd has some fascist policies concerning metahumans, it's possible that they lack certain rights.

Well, good for you. Neither OL nor Alan are law enforcement.

I mean Alan kinda is.

Technically, he is alien to this universe. You didn't recognise him, so presumably there's no Paul running around with any kind of powers on this Earth. Doesn't stop him being out in space somewhere, but...

Or it could be like the Nazi Earth version and he was defeated and imprisoned.

She may not know about it because she wasn't involved in the capture and may not have read the report.

I mean, you do seem to have that effect on some people, OL

Ain't that the truth.

Which makes me wonder what shape the local Alan is in, if she isn't confused by any difference in age. I mean, Alan probably looks younger, but not that young, right?

I think he looks middle-aged now.

Add a ' after international.
"concluded" to "conclude"
I gesture to the Amazos with my right hand.
Thank you, corrected.
Huh, maybe they are in the Tarot Trinity universe, or one based on it anyway.
Based on it. So many good ideas in that storyline, and so much waffle that could have been cut or separated.
Don't remember the giant Amazos at all though, you'd have thought that would have stuck with me.
They're only in about two panels. One of the annoying things about that storyline. The Heywards Corps, a large group of people who volunteered for cybernetic augmentation in order to serve as the JSI's foot soldiers, are mentioned in three panels and appear in one. Why?

Trinity Alan looks like a healthy middle aged man, so Blue Lantern looking younger than he should won't throw anyone for a loop.

Edit- Actually looking at the comics, Trinity's art apparently couldn't keep track of how old Alan is supposed to look- old, middle aged, young, changes from panel to panel.
