With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

Paul was about to put that thing on a back burner anyhow, he didn't need a catastrophe to distract him. Moreover, the whole thing is not something Doc Smiley would do anyway, if he is even still active after the world got wrecked out of status quo several times.
They were all objectively changes for the worse for a majority of people, at least in the short run? Depends on what it is he actually does. If the angels are right that he's a demon of stagnation or something, he's be perfectly fine with a small tribe taking over the Amazon, or the Anti-Life breaking everything.

And if they are, why the heck didn't they ask OL to help? If they knew his views on it...

Because it's Paul.

Let's face it, they may have thought that he'd take things too far or do something stupid like give it to Luthor.

And any super-soldier formula inevitably tends to have tradeoffs that outweigh the benefits. Like the difficulty of applying Danner Formula, or the morality-affecting aspect of the Evil Formula... Or the MCU's Erskine Serum, with its amplification of every trait, good and bad.

Or sometimes just the fact that the formulas may not work, give useless powers, or kill the user.

Oh, boy. Here we go again! At least this time it won't require Superboy doing a punch from near-orbit to settle. Hopefully.

Didn't consider this, but it would be interesting if this is Oceanus, or at least one of the other ancient water deities emerging from imprisonment.

Hekate did want the Titans to receive pardons, so maybe Heph finally got around to doing it.

Plus, after the world got a taste of Darkseid, Heph and the others may have thought it would be a good idea to have the Titans on their side.

Though I'm pretty sure it's just Ahri'ahn.

In which case, Superboy punching him would be good from a thematic point.

Both because Ahri'ahn was an enemy of Superman in the comics, and the fact that a giant xenophobe being punched out by someone with alien genetics is too good to pass up.

And once the water is dealt with, the question will be what the hell they've been waiting for, and why it took so long to emerge. Unless something is very wrong in the state of Poseidonis, anyway...

Ahri'ahn may have been trying to to do the same thing he did in the Renegade side.

Or the reason they've waited this long was because they were worried that if they emerged too soon then Anti-Life would be still around.

And do to that it would sure help to know who sent it."
And to do / or, I suppose 'And due to' though it doesn't really fit.

Not the thing underwater… the thing Anarchy is investigating. Doc Smiley probably set up a thing so that whenever Paul is about to start investigating him something big comes up in order to encourage his passivity.
No, I don't think Smiley has any interest in allowing specific plotlines to play out rather than preventing the broad Earth setting from changing. Which he notably kind of failed at, since Earth is a massive mess after the Sheeda war and Anti-Life incursion, changing the setting from an 'Everyday in Earth DC' world to a 'Rebuilding after the End' world. Also I'm not sure if Smiley is so meta he recognizes plot lines as they're happening / knows the future through tropes, in this case Batman going off the deep end and creating the Brother Eye program to spy on all the Justice League or whatever it's for that Anarky has somehow noticed and begun fighting.

Man, that takes me back... to the Eighties or so. The old days of computers, with continuous paper with alternating lines for proofreading clarity... Though such things are still in use today. So it's not likely some ancient piece of hardware. Maybe a modern Telex machine-equivalent.
Huh. Would Lex keep some improved iterations of Telex machines going, for ego-related reasons?

Silver Age Supergirl stares down at me in disappointment, arms folded across her chest.

"Hm!"

I use a construct to create a zero gravity field around the beached whale pod and float them back out to sea.

"It was the best way to neutralise the wave."

"Hm!"

I make a quick assessment of the state of health of the fish floating in the area, and
take several healing rays out of subspace.

"You could help, you know."

"You should learn from cleaning up your own mess, you one-man environmental disaster! That was not nice!"

"I'm happy to clean up my own messes. I regard it as a form of penance. I just think that more fish might survive if you chipped in, but if you care about punishing me more than about saving the fish, then carry on staring at me."

She looks away awkwardly. "I can't heal things, okay! Some things just don't work at super speed!"

"Then how about helping with the damage? There have to be rocks you can move, or something."

"Kal and Mopey Kara and that new guy already did most of iiiit! And there wasn't that much to do, anyway!" She sort of kicks her right foot against the air in frustration. "You Lanterns are really good!"

"Thank you. It's nice to know that our training has paid off."

"Yes! Good! But-! Ugh! You know!?"

"Nearly."

Alright, every fish who has even the smallest spark of life in it in my region will now enjoy a long and happy life, to the best of their abilities. The rest can go into subspace. There's got to be a freezer I can dump them into somewhere because the Central Atlantic is going to be off-limits to fishing ships for the foreseeable future.

Atlantis is back.

Back on the surface.

I turn to look out to see, Kara floating over to hover besides me.

Mostly.

If the entire continent had actually come back up onto the surface then vast areas of the world would have been flooded. The Netherlands would have finally lost its battle with the sea, for a start. Poseidonis is fully out, down to where the outermost parts of the old city-state's territory used to be. Shayeris is up, but it looks more like a small island than anything else. Nanauve is completely submerged, and only the tallest parts of Venturia are poking through the water. Which makes no sense. Venturia is one of the shallowest-. Was one of the shallowest cities in Atlantis prior to 'Vent-it', but its islands are more or less the same height that they were and…

I don't know what's going on.

The magic shields are… Shutting down, and I can see people going about their day. As well as the members of the Justice League who are trying to get hold of King Orin.

I narrow my eyes, trying to-.

Owowow. That was a mistake. Clearly. Someone has upgraded their area effect shielding. Which is fair enough, really.

"Your eyes are on fire!"

I turn my head towards her slowly as they finally decay to ash.

"Really?"

"Yes!" ... "No! I mean, they were!"

"That explains the pain from the top of my face. I was worried for a moment."

I regenerate them. Ugh, I can hardly make a pair of eyes last a year these days.

"So, how are you doing?"

"Is this really the time for pick-up lines!?"

"That wasn't a pick-up line. That was an honest enquiry about your life. Have you made any progress tracking your original parallel universe?"

"Oh, I haven't been looking!"

"Oh?"

"My Kal has it handled! And I have a life here now!"

"You don't think you should try and send him a message so that he doesn't worry?"

"He's got this great viewer thing! He used it to let his parents know that he made it to Earth safely! I'm sure he's found me by now!"

"Ah…"

Getting Kara II home has… Fallen completely by the wayside. Given everything that's happened, I think that was a reasonable prioritisation. But now that we've splinted the Earth and are waiting for the bone to heal, I could probably put some time on the subject. But I suppose that if she doesn't want me to then I should just accept that.

"Alright, if that's what you want."

"Oooooh I wanna be over there!"

"Haven't you visited Atlantis?"

"Not all of it! And now I can do it without holding my breath the whole time!"

I frown. "Why would-?"

I shake my head, smiling. I don't know if she's joking or not, but…

"Illustres to Clarissi Dox. Low priority."

I've got something I need to do.

Dox's bust appears in front of me. "Illustres. When it comes to you, it's never 'low priority'."

"
Why thank you, sir. I'm contacting you to tell you that not only are Atlantis's shields down, but several cities are now above the ocean. Please pass that along to our Atlantean employees."

"I imagine that they'll be glad to hear it. What is it's status beyond that?"

"
Don't know. The Justice League are finding out now. The purebloods will be fine, though those who needs water might.. be a bit more limited in where they live."

Which is a very purebloodist way of doing things, but… The purebloodist movement was pretty much exterminated after Orm tried killing Queen Mera. There shouldn't be… Much support for something like that. And… Raising cities from the bottom of the ocean certainly isn't a casual thing.

"Understood. Keep me informed."

I nod. "Will do. I-." My ring flashes. "Excuse me. I have another call. Answer."

Dox's construct vanishes, and is replaced by Lantern Stewart.

"Orange Lantern, they… Want to talk to you."

"
'They' being?"

"Mostly? Ahri'ahn."

Good to have confirmation that he's behind this. Not sure why he'd want to talk to Paul though. Displeasure that most of the recent advancement of magic is due to the actions of a surface dweller who is linked to a jumped up elemental?

stares down and me in

"at me"

Bring these two closer.

I don't know what's going on.

Venturia not being fully out makes sense since they're now independent of Atlantis.

Maybe Ahri'ahn did that as a punishment, or whatever he's doing requires the citizens to view Atlantis as their home to be able to have their cities emerge.

"Someone has"

"Your eyes are on fire!"

I turn my head towards her slowly as they finally decay to ash.

You're very casual about this.

At least now you have a Silver Age-level Kryptonian on your side.

And that's why he's one of the smartest people in the universe.

I mean, you may have killed the leaders of the most organized or violent movement, but their ideals and goals would still persist.

"Orange Lantern, they… Want to talk to you."

"
'They' being?"

"Mostly? Ahri'ahn

Called it.

Silver Age Supergirl stares down at me in disappointment, arms folded across her chest.

"Hm!"
I'm guessing she's upset about something, but in typical teenage fashion doesn't want to have to come out and say it unless he asks her to. Probably the massive disruption of the Atlantic and it's shorelines.

I use a construct to create a zero gravity field around the beached whale pod and float them back out to sea.

"It was the best way to neutralise the wave."
Ah. Right, a sonic construct that large would definitely have been audible to Kryptonians. And I take it she didn't like the loud, loud noise.

"Hm!"

I make a quick assessment of the state of health of the fish floating in the area, and take several healing rays out of subspace.
I assume some fish didn't make it. Hopefully there weren't too many extinctions from all this.

"You could help, you know."

"You should learn from cleaning up your own mess, you one-man environmental disaster! That was not nice!"
What do you think he's doing, hun'? And you can't blame him for this, since every Lantern on Earth was probably forming up to do the same thing around the expanding surge.

With a healing ray, I take it. Unless she actually does have some obscure kryptonian martial arts skill that can heal things... I mean, given the Silver Age, I wouldn't discount the possibility.

"Then how about helping with the damage? There have to be rocks you can move, or something."

"Kal and Mopey Kara and that new guy already did most of iiiit! And there wasn't that much to do, anyway!" She sort of kicks her right foot against the air in frustration. "You Lanterns are really good!"
...'New Guy'? She means Conner? Well, I suppose to her he is new. No clone Superboys in her era, barring Bizarros. Edit: Ah, the Phantom Zone repatriate. While I could be wrong, I want to say... Mon-El?

"Thank you. It's nice to know that our training has paid off."

"Yes! Good! But-! Ugh! You know!?"

"Nearly."
Hard to stay angry at him when he's being so reasonable, isn't it? Can't even insult him because he takes it as a compliment.

To be fair, I'd have expected that years ago once Atlantis became public knowledge. Companies wanting to avoid ticking off the aquatic magical polity and all that.

Atlantis is back.

Back on the surface.
Unfortunately, that is not necessarily a good thing for some of its population. Like the ones who have stronger aquatic adaptions...

I turn to look out to see, Kara floating over to hover besides me.

Mostly.
Ah, the uplift wasn't completely even? By choice or by accident, I wonder.

Was one of the shallowest cities in Atlantis prior to 'Vent-it', but its islands are more or less the same height that they were and…
Roughly in line with the proportions of their populations who are divergent from the 'pure' Atlantean form. Someone was definitely making a point.

I don't know what's going on.

The magic shields are… Shutting down, and I can see people going about their day. As well as the members of the Justice League who are trying to get hold of King Orin.
Or whoever's in charge if he's unavailable...

I narrow my eyes, trying to-.

Owowow. That was a mistake. Clearly. Some has upgraded their area effect shielding. Which is fair enough, really.
Someone who doesn't want outsider 'wizards' poking their nose in, perhaps.

"Your eyes are on fire!"

I turn my head towards her slowly as they finally decay to ash.
A rather extreme response to someone stickybeaking.

"Really?"

"Yes!" ... "No! I mean, they were!"
And for anyone else, that would probably have been a lethal response. There might be a few less wizards in the world, or at least ones with damaged scrying tools.

"That explains the pain from the top of my face. I was worried for a moment."

I regenerate them. Ugh, I can hardly make a pair of eyes last a year these days.
And it says so much about his life that that's a thing he can say with a straight face.

"So, how are you doing?"

"Is this really the time for chat up lines!?"
I mean, the League are handling things over at Poseidonis, clean-up's done... Not much else for the juniors to do.

"That wasn't a chat up line. That was an honest enquiry about your life. Have you made any progress tracking your original parallel universe?"

"Oh, I haven't been looking!"
She's basically just decided to hang around here for now, hasn't she? Too easy-going, the girl is.

"Oh?"

"My Kal has it handled! And I have a life here now!"

"You don't think you should try and send him a message so that he doesn't worry?"
Or there was a Crisis and he's forgotten about you. Wouldn't be the first time.

"He's got this great viewer thing! He used it to let his parents know that he made it to Earth safely! I'm sure he's found me by now!"

"Ah…"
Silver Age comics, folks. a viewer that can communicate through time and space casually.

Let's not accept that? Who knows what universal metaphysical consequences her presence here is having that you simply haven't seen yet?

"Alright, if that's what you want."

"Oooooh I wanna be over there!"
Probably not a good idea. Given how vulnerable kryptonians are to magical influence.

"Haven't you visited Atlantis?"

"Not all of it! And now I can do it without holding my breath the whole time!"
To be fair, given the absurd compression capabilities of kryptonian lungs, especially Silver Age ones... She could probably hold her breath for a week and talk by humming.

I frown. "Why would-?"

I shake my head, smiling. I don't know if she's joking or not, but…
She's probably not. Too sincere for that, this girl.

"Illustres to Clarissi Dox. Low priority."

I've got something I need to do.

Dox's bust appears in front of me. "Illustres. When it comes to you, it's never 'low priority'."
Yeah, that goes without saying. But in this case, it really is... Until something goes badly wrong.

"Why thank you, sir. I'm contacting you to tell you that not only are Atlantis's shields down, but several cities are now above the ocean. Please pass that along to our Atlantean employees."

"I imagine that they'll be glad to hear it. What is it's status beyond that?"
Sadly, OL's been a little too busy doctoring fish and aquatic mammals to worry about that.

"Don't know.

I'm surprised OL hasn't been considering possible causes, like Ahri'ahn or Gamemnae. This is no small working, after all.

"Understood. Keep me informed."

I nod. "Will do. I-." My ring flashes. "Excuse me. I have another call. Answer."
My, he's in demand today.

Dox's construct vanishes, and is replaced by Lantern Stewart.

"Orange Lantern, they… Want to talk to you."
...Well, that's concerning.

"'They' being?"

"Mostly? Ahri'ahn."
...And there's the shoe, on its way down.

Well, I presume this is Ahri'ahn's doing. The question being now is whether he's openly in charge of things or is propping Orin up as a puppet monarch. If Orin is still even here. I expect this little request is about OL's attempts to spread Atlantean thaumaturgy to the surface world. I don't remember enough of Ahri'ahn to know if he'd be happy with that or not...

In the Renegade timeline, Ahri'ahn attacked the Un-Men for using Atlantean techniques in their procedures, so he probably sees it at barbarians utilizing things that only Atlanteans have the right to have.

Remind me, when did OL leave our timeline? I thought it was well before brexit/etc, so 'vent-it' wouldn't be a thing he'd be familiar with?

New Guy'? She means Conner? Well, I suppose to her he is new. No clone Superboys in her era, barring Bizarros.

I think she's referring to Match.

To be fair, I'd have expected that years ago once Atlantis became public knowledge. Companies wanting to avoid ticking off the aquatic magical polity and all that.

Companies have damaged part of ecosystems even if governments complain about it.

Roughly in line with the proportions of their populations who are divergent from the 'pure' Atlantean form. Someone was definitely making a point.

That could be why Paul noted that Shayeris was smaller.

Ahri'ahn may nit want it to seem bigger than Atlantis.

Someone who doesn't want outsider 'wizards' poking their nose in, perhaps.

A rather extreme response to someone stickybeaking

The last time someone tried to poke it was to spread misery, so eyes burning may actually be a small countermeasure.

She's basically just decided to hang around here for now, hasn't she? Too easy-going, the girl is.

Well if it does come to a fight then Paul is going to have the most powerful Kryptonian in the universe for help.

I can just imagine Ahri'ahn going on about his superiority, only for Kara II to pull out some smaller Age nonsense and he calls bullshit.

Or there was a Crisis and he's forgotten about you. Wouldn't be the first time.

Silver Age behaviors were...weird.

To be fair, given the absurd compression capabilities of kryptonian lungs, especially Silver Age ones... She could probably hold her breath for a week and talk by humming.

Or super ventriloquism.

I'm surprised OL hasn't been considering possible causes, like Ahri'ahn or Gamemnae. This is no small working, after all.

So far nothing technically points to an ancient Atlantean returning.

He could have just thought that they started to really engage in research to combat Anti-Life and someone discovered a method to bring Atlantis out.

Well, I presume this is Ahri'ahn's doing. The question being now is whether he's openly in charge of things or is propping Orin up as a puppet monarch. If Orin is still even here. In the Renegade timeline, Ahri'ahn attacked the Un-Men for using Atlantean techniques in their procedures, so he probably sees it at barbarians utilizing things that only Atlanteans have the right to have.

While true he did attack the Un-Men. I think that may have had to do with the fact that Atlantis, and him in particular, were not given credit.

Here the world knows that the most high-end magic comes from Atlantis, so he might honestly be okay with it.

Is this Kara British / mimicking OL's speech? If not, should be "pick up lines"

As an englishman myself, i've literally never heard the phrase 'chat-up line' before.
You can chat someone up, but you still use pickup lines to do it.

Maybe it's a regional thing.

Although that typo gives me the image of Boss Smiley, Lord of Order.

More like embodiment of stagnation, control and status quo. I would say that he's more akin to Yaldabaoth from Persona 5…Or maybe that would be Darkseid, what with the whole god of "oppression and tyranny" thing?

Although, this does raise an interesting question: What exactly IS Boss Smiley's stance on The Light? Considering that they more-or-less had the same objective as Paul, but that their methods were far more violent, chaotic and disruptive to the status quo, Boss Smiley must have naturally been opposed to them, right? Unless he chose to stay out of it because he thought the Justice League could handle them?

Well if it does come to a fight then Paul is going to have the most powerful Kryptonian in the universe for help.

I can just imagine Ahri'ahn going on about his superiority, only for Kara II to pull out some smaller Age nonsense and he calls bullshit.
Kara II is still vulnerable to magic, so unless she can attack Ahri'ahn so fast that he's unable to set up a defense and he didn't prepare one in advance, she's not going to be of much help in a direct confrontation.

In the Renegade timeline, Ahri'ahn attacked the Un-Men for using Atlantean techniques in their procedures, so he probably sees it at barbarians utilizing things that only Atlanteans have the right to have.

Didn't he also attack in the Paragon timeline with worse results for the Un-Men? I seem to recall that the original mission in the Paragon timeline ended up with people losing their bio-modifications due to a flesh golem or something. But the Paragon timeline has been so fucked by multiple crises that I don't recall if people knew to look out for Ahri'ahn as the villain that he is.

That wasn't Ahri'ahn. That was another Un-Man who was getting help from Kobra.

I regenerate them. Ugh, I can hardly make a pair of eyes last a year these days.
Seems fairly rare for any of his body parts to go more than three to six months without needing replacement.

"Illustres. When it comes to you, it's never 'low priority'."

"Why thank you, sir.
Paul's ego might not be that large but it is extremely dense.

Strange, in the other timeline he was too arrogant to care about talking with anyone.

Strange, in the other timeline he was too arrogant to care about talking with anyone.
He's arrogant, not stupid. He knows the Anti-Life affected the planet while he was consolidating power in Atlantis, and he probably had some way to monitor the situation outside of Atlantis, so he may be aware that the Anti-Life was only purged after OL returned from space and enacted some kind of secret/desperate plan.
