With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

"Have you considered asking politely?"

"Don't be ridiculous."

"I know that it-."

"No, she's right. It wouldn't work. She'd either like the idea or babble incoherently."
"I meant you, or possibly Destruction. The only thing I can think of to quickly counter one of the Endless is one of the other Endless."

The annoying thing about Despair in a situation like this is that she is definitely telling the truth, but there's no way to be certain that she's telling the whole truth or just the parts of it that will lead you to despair.

"I meant you, or possibly Destruction. The only thing I can think of to quickly counter one of the Endless is one of the other Endless."
Destruction doesn't give a fuck.

She finds being piscine that bad?
Um.
She isn't dreading the pain or loss of power, is she… Is she going to gain animalistic traits from every affected Atlantean subspecies? She's afraid of mutilating herself, deforming herself? Gammenmae…
Um.
She's got to drain the Delirium juice out of Atlantis and the doesn't have the time to build the kind of channel that could do it fast enough to matter. So she's going to use the root access she already has and channel the power out through herself.

Which means she's going to get full exposure to all of Delirium's power that's spread out across the entire population of Atlantis and does not expect to survive that on basically any level.
Oh good, someone got it. I was worried for a moment.
Sure, she's going to physically become a shark... but with that much Delirium power involved, she's probably going to become one mentally as well. There won't be a simple undo to be had afterwards. There'll probably just be an ordinary shark, and the fact that said shark used to be a brilliant ancient magician won't even matter, not with the bridge back so thoroughly burnt.
She is not in fact going to become a shark.
The Orange Light doesn't trump Endless power, as evidenced by Despair's threat to permanently remove Paul's arm, which he took seriously.
That doesn't necessarily mean that Despair was correct, just that he wasn't willing to risk it.

The… Bleeding has mostly stopped.

The burns are mostly cooling.

I really didn't appreciate how messed up that looked from the outside until I watched it myself.

"I don't know how long this will take."

Gamemnae is actually leaning on me as we head back towards the portal, Despair following on behind at a waddle. Their grin is starting to get annoying.

I don't really know what Despair does, or how they got the job, but I am slightly mollified to know that they'll die before the end of the universe. I mean… Really, I'm getting out of this lightly. Just me; Gamemnae is having just about the worst thing possible happen to her, and while she's definitely earned some time in the Punishment Fields this is… Something I actually wouldn't wish on a supervillainess.

"Does it end when we destroy the stones, or are you stuck-?"

She's shaking her head. "I mutilated my soul to accept this power. Pray that the portal is still open, because I can no longer open a new one."

"Does it get less bad when we destroy the-?"

"No." I glance back at the cheerful-looking Despair. "Not with those magics."

"I will not lift a hand against you, but I can't deny that I'll experience an unseemly amount of pleasure when you finally die."

"I just want to see if I get both of you."

"Gamemnae, is there anything I can do to make this less terrible for you? Suspended animation, perhaps?"

"Once... Once the stones are destroyed and the networks collapsed and Atlantis rests on the Atlantic floor once more, only then will it be safe to allow me to sleep."

"Okay, that's an improvement. And then we can work out a way to unmutilate you. I know a man who can cut runes into souls directly, so… Maybe he can undo them… Or reroute them-."

"Why..? Are you being… Nice? You know what I was doing."

"Because you didn't have to do this, and a lot of people are going to get to live sane lives because you are. I know plenty of people who'd just shrug and then save themselves. You could have done."

"I didn't even last a year. I just… Just wanted to make Atlantis great, and…"

"And you got over confident, didn't check your work and didn't trust anyone enough to check it for you. And you decided that you were the only way Atlantis could become great. Atlantean magicians have never been in more demand than they are today. Atlantis was becoming richer and more socially dominant. But… I.. guess I understand if that's all that kept you together in Mictlān and you got a bit fixated."

Despair claps. "Touching. I might cry."

"So as I said, I'll do whatever I can to help you. But while you're coherent, I'd very much appreciate it if you could tell me where King Orin and Koryak are. Because it's going to be a lot easier to convince other people to help me if I can give them that."

"I sent Koryak to Venturia, with a few spells to make him obedient. They won't.. find it strange that he's there. Not until you recover King Orin."

"Okay, that's an easy fix once the mental confusion ends. And King Orin?"

"Heh. Heh. HehAHheh. I'm, Sooo hEArtleSS."

We're not out yet and I don't like the sound of that laugh.

Do I still have..? Yes… There it is in the depths of subspace, the… Third? Production model.

A little nightmare talisman from the Goddess of Nightmares and Madness. I raise it to my forehead.

"Melinoë, please bless this woman with your forbearance. She will know more than enough madness and has lived more than enough nightmares. Shield her, I beg you."

And then I put it over Gamemnae's head.

She gasps, and her eyes are a little more focused. But she's leaning on me more.

"Better? Worse?"

"W-what..?"

"It's started, whatever it is. You're currently wearing a charm blessed by your new goddess of nightmares and madness. I don't know how long or how well it will work. Better or worse?"

"It's-. Worse, but it's forcing me to be coherent. The horror is all there, but I'm forced to feel it all rather than hide in delusion."

Sounds about right.

"King Orin. Where?"

"The easiest way to hide the body."

"Make sure there isn't a body."

"The site where Oceanus was bound was already tied to the royal line. An Aztec spell using his heart as the focus… Was a part of all this."

"And he's not dead?"

"He's immortal. I made him like Oceanus. We keep fish in him now."

"I.. saw the pool. Do I just put the heart in it?"

"No, that's asinine-. You'll need a magician. Nommo Balewa should be able to make the bridge. It's not that complicated once you can perceive the shape of the bindings."

"Rightoh. Will he need anything when he becomes human again?"

"I don't know. I've never used that spell before."

"That's fair."

And there's the portal.

"Nearly there. The teams will need an hour or so, then I'll put you-"

A grey-robed figure with a heavy book in his arms walks through the portal.

"-under. Destiny!"

I think he's looking at me, but his hood covers his eyes. "You aren't in my book. You never were."

"Almost certainly true. But I've got something that I really need to take care of right now. Can we put this off until Atlantis has sunk again?"

"I suppose that it doesn't cause more disruption." He steps aside. "Be on your way."

"That's it?"

"Despair. You aren't supposed to be here either. I consider myself even-handed in these matters. Do you wish to complain further?"

Despair's smile fades. "No, brother."

I turn away from the frankly terrifying superbeings, and half-carry Gamemnae through the portal.

Well. Gamemnae can learn.

And Paul is (quite rightly) scared of the Endless. I wonder what the after-Sinking affair will look like, when he speaks to Destiny?

Even better - will Atlantis know? How will they react to returning to the waves? How will they react to knowing Gamemnae was Ahria'ahn, that she almost doomed them all, and that she saved them, this time?

Barely any combat, here. It's reassuring, and such an interesting plot hook…

Also, first!

Atlantis rest on the Atlantic floor

"rests"

"Okay, that's an easy fix once the mental confusion ends. And King Orin?"

"Heh. Heh. HehAHheh. I'm, Sooo hEArtleSS."

Shit, did she rip out his heart because she doesn't have one.

An Aztec spell using his heart as the focus… Was a part of all this."

I thought that Cernunos said that because the Aztec gods and their realm were gone, any magic connected to them would not work?

Maybe he was wrong, or Gamemnae created her own version of the spell.

It's seems strange that Paul has only just now caused enough disruption in the universe for Destiny to take notice. Or is it just that Destiny somehow hasn't realized that Paul is responsible for it all?
he did say that Paul isn't in his book

so he probably can't see Paul unless he right next to him

Hmm. In the Renegade timeline, we learned that Mordru had stolen a part of the book of destiny. Presumably the same thing happened in this timeline as well. Do we know if that sort of thing has happened more than once, and therefore OL might be on one of the missing pages?

So, a successful inscribing. As best it can be when she's having to do it herself. Hopefully the process didn't require anything etched into her back, because that would be hellishly tricky. Let's hope it works as intended, though...

I really didn't appreciate how messed up that looked from the outside until I watched it myself.

"I don't know how long this will take."
At least he could restore the physical damage done to his body. That might be a bit more difficult with Gamemnae, since he's not as inclined to do more than keep her alive.

To be fair, by the time the universe ends, the only thing left will be Death to, as she puts it, 'put the chairs up and turn off the lights' before she and the universe end together.

"Does it end when we destroy the stones, or are you stuck-?"

She's shaking her head. "I mutilated my soul to accept this power. Pray that the portal is still open, because I can no longer open a new one."
By the time it's all over, her soul may well be made of Delirium-stuff.

"Does it get less bad when we destroy the-?"

"No." I glance back at the cheerful-looking Despair. "Not with those magics."
Good to see her feeling so helpful. Then again, she's saying that knowing it will make them feel worse.

"I will not lift a hand against you, but I can't deny that I'll experience an unseemly amount of pleasure when you finally die."

"I just want to see if I get both of you."
Oh, he's got her interest now. That's absolutely terrible.

"Gamemnae, is there anything I can do to make this less terrible for you? Suspended animation, perhaps?"

"Once... Once the stones are destroyed and the networks collapsed and Atlantis rest on the Atlantic floor once more, only then will it be safe to allow me to sleep."
Which means she's going to have to watch the whole process. No wonder Despair's smiling.

"Okay, that's an improvement. And then we can work out a way to unmutilate you. I know a man who can cut runes into souls directly, so… Maybe he can undo them… Or reroute them-."

"Why..? Are you being… Nice? You know what I was doing."
Because he appreciates the sacrifice. It takes a lot to do that, and it deserves to be rewarded.

"Because you didn't have to do this, and a lot of people are going to get to live sane lives because you are. I know plenty of people who'd just shrug and then save themselves. You could have done."

"I didn't even last a year. I just… Just wanted to make Atlantis great, and…"
Atlantis was already great. What she was doing might have ruined that. But best not to mention that outright, or she may snap.

She really should have checked first before going through with all this, but a bit of mania is understandable.

Despair claps. "Touching. I might cry."

"So as I said, I'll do whatever I can to help you. But while you're coherent, I'd very much appreciate it if you could tell me where King Orin and Koryak are. Because it's going to be a lot easier to convince other people to help me if I can give them that."
Good, best to sort that out before she goes completely round the bend.

"I sent Koryak to Venturia, with a few spells to make him obedient. They won't.. find it strange that he's there. Not until you recover King Orin."

"Okay, that's an easy fix once the mental confusion ends. And King Orin?"
Kaldur can handle that part. He was already on that trail, he can see it through.

"Heh. Heh. HehAHheh. I'm, Sooo hEArtleSS."

We're not out yet and I don't like the sound of that laugh.
Sounds like the energy is already building up. She's gonna need restraints, I suspect.

Do I still have..? Yes… There it is in the depths of subspace, the… Third? Production model.

A little nightmare talisman from the Goddess of Nightmares and Madness. I raise it to my forehead.
Ah, a handy little gift. I wouldn't be surprised to see that Melinoë aligns nicely with Delirium's current focus.

"Melinoë, please bless this woman with your forbearance. She will know more than enough madness and has lived more than enough nightmares. Shield her, I beg you."

And then I put it over Gamemnae's head.
Hopefully Melinoë can reach her here.

She gasps, and her eyes are a little more focused. But she's leaning on me more.

"Better? Worse?"

"W-what..?"
Yeah, turns out OL has a few ins with the Hellenic pantheon. He wasn't kidding earlier when he said they'd be helpful.

Just imagine the reputation boost it'll give Melinoë, too. A woman who carved madness into her very soul?

Sounds about right.

"King Orin. Where?"
And how hard is it going to be to put him back together? I remember 'Justice', where they cut his brain and triggered a hitherto-unknown regeneration power that healed him...

"The easiest way to hide the body."

"Make sure there isn't a body."
Ah, just like 'Obsidian Age' then.

"The site where Oceanus was bound was already tied to the royal line. An Aztec spell using his heart as the focus… Was a part of all this."

"And he's not dead?"
Gee, mixing thaumatic traditions like that can't have been easy. Good thing she was one of Atlantis' greatest mages.

"He's immortal. I made him like Oceanus. We keep fish in him now."

"I.. saw the pool. Do I just put the heart in it?"
Surely it can't be that easy... Hopefully they won't have to dig a trench to the ocean.

"No, that's asinine-. You'll need a magician. Nommo Balewa should be able to make the bridge. It's not that complicated once you can perceive the shape of the bindings."

"Rightoh. Will he need anything when he becomes human again?"
Certainly, Balewa can manage it He's that damn good.

"I don't know. I've never used that spell before."

"That's fair."

And there's the portal.
Good, they don't have to trouble the owner of the house to be let out...

"Nearly there. The teams will need an hour or so, then I'll put you-"

A grey-robed figure with a heavy book in his arms walks through the portal.
...Damn, looks like they'll be meeting him anyway.

"-under. Destiny!"

I think he's looking at me, but his hood covers his eyes. "You aren't in my book. You never were."
Oh, that is so his voice in my head from here on out.

"Almost certainly true. But I've got something that I really need to take care of right now. Can we put this off until Atlantis has sunk again?"

"I suppose that it doesn't cause more disruption." He steps aside. "Be on your way."
Okay, so he can perceive OL. At least there's that much. Unless he's only perceiving him by the way others perceive him...

"That's it?"

"Despair. You aren't supposed to be here either. I consider myself even-handed in these matters. Do you wish to complain further?"
A bit grumpy because his book was getting rewritten? He does do that.

Despair's smile fades. "No, brother."

I turn away from the frankly terrifying superbeings, and half-carry Gamemnae through the portal.
Nothing super about them. They're beyond primordial. Even gods are cautious around them, as we saw in 'The Sandman'.

Well, that went well. I shudder to imagine the next meeting with Destiny, but at least they got out safely. Now to see if the League can pull through, and how bad the resulting collapse ends up being. Hopefully it won't cause too many upheavals, and this time the Lanterns will be ready for it. Though the people of Atlantis will have a rough time adapting again, I bet.

Would be funny if Destiny shows OL the path the original timeline would have taken without the massive Earth deathtolls.

You mean the timeline where Savage gets his hands on an army of Kryptonians and a giant warship capable of destroying planets, where Klarion is still alive and running around destroying things, where Nabu is still possessing Giovanni, where the Reach are still running around enslaving people, where Darkseid controlled several planets using the Anti-Life in Halo, where Match is a deformed monster.

so Destiny trump Despair in the D hierarchy ?
Destiny is the first and oldest of the Endless and in his realm his power is very much absolute. By his very nature the other Endless are fundamentally reliant on him: Destiny is the foundation of the Endless because it is essentially the journey of life, none of the other Endless would have an effect on human existence without Destiny because there would be no, well, destiny.

It's also occasionally implied that the Endless are in Destiny's book and he knows exactly what will happen to all of them, barring interference from Challengers of the Unknown of course.

The timeline where - according to Truggs - the Reach kills them all. Earth loses. Period.

This isn't YJ, even just limited to S1-2. It's a similar verse that didn't let the Reach lose a propaganda war to the Team's/League's floundering.

Destiny and Death are the oldest of the Endless, and the least likely to play games around with their domains. I don't remember which is older, but honestly if the two came to blows everyone else would suffer for it. Dream is next in sequence, and tries to refrain from fucking around, but doesn't always manage to resist being drawn in. Destruction is the middle sibling, and had a moment of existential realization sometime in the past that he's utterly unnecessary for his domain; it's gonna keep going just fine with or without him, and he more or less retired. That said, don't get on his bad side, he will fuck you up. Despair and Desire are next, though I'm not sure which is older; contrary to all their other siblings, these two actively play games within their domains, often causing problems for others. Desire is also a sore loser. Finally is Delerium, who was Delight. The word 'focused' does not apply to them, anymore, so her intentions rarely matter.

They're the eldest and to my knowledge only he and Death have never added an incarnation to the necropolis. As to what the others are posting: Death is not more powerful, her final destiny is to be the last living thing in the universe.
