i like the implication here. its almost like LSoGM is an assimilated construct lantern without having to be an assimilated construct. what better low-level functionary than a being that genuinely has no drive or want more than following orders? if "obeying" is the sole motivation that powers LSoGM's avarice and therefore Orange Ring power, i think maybe cloning it and rewiring the clones' drives to serve the Corps instead of Great Mother would be a great way to produce some high-powered / low-complication / maximum-return cannon fodder in the war against the Reach. I'm thinking something along the lines of the Golden Army from Hellboy, to be activated/deactivated at the Clarissi's discretion.

I mean, on the one hand, it makes sense. Bio-engineered life form, made to serve.

On the other hand, maybe Paul might want to make sure certain people never find out that Alien House-Elves exist. I know, brownies are already out there, but people tend to use certain species mind-sets to justify things, and an Orange Lantern is rather more attention-grabbing than a hidden fae.



…also, what the heck did the government do? The Man ended with that. What nonsense did they come up with this time?

I know it's hard to make a good stab at proper Governmental Stupidity - it always comes up short against real life - but I really am very curious about the teased cliffhanger.

I wait, floating patiently in an 'at ease' posture just behind him.

I'm not sure how worried I should be that none of the other Invincibles brought a staff with them. I was getting some decidedly unfriendly looks on Mr. Angstrom's ship on the way here.

"I'm sorry to trouble you, Invincible, but if you want to attack the Global Defence Agency building before your alter-ego levels it then you'll need to get a move on."

"Yeah… I just wanna… Check something first."

He drops into a swimmer pose and heads towards… Upstate University appears to be the most likely target. And I…

We were rebuilding. While I'm still not totally sure what the viltrumites actually want from Earth, things are… Functional. Invincible and Atom Eve are… He's the most human I've seen him around her, and she's… Not.. coping well. But she is coping. Omniman… Invincible appears to have passed on my suggestion of elevating the status of women who agree to bear viltrumite children, and… 'Breeding complexes' are now a thing. Omniman doesn't appear to be involving himself, but Vidor and Lucan have a number of concubines…

Being the mother of viltrumites is the highest status they're likely to get inside the Empire, they and their families will want for nothing and maybe being surrounded by human civilisation will give their children a more human outlook and they're all volunteers.

And I still feel disgusted at myself for suggesting it.

"Hey, can you find a guy called William Clockwell?"

I nod and smile. Nod and smile. "Certainly. He's in his dormitory with a… Mister Richard Sheridan."

I think, and a glowing orange arrow appears to point him in the right direction.

"May I ask what we're attempting to do here?"

"It just-. Personal stuff. Keep watch for me in case the Guardians show up, or one of those other psychos."

Invincible flies over to Mr. Clockwell's window and knocks on the glass. He's.. smiling, and it looks… Awkward but natural, in a way that literally none of the smiles I've ever seen him make have. I… I float up and begin scanning. The closest other Invincible… And the local Invincible, are fighting it out at Payton Penitentiary, and… I'm not detecting anyone significant closer than that.

I hear the window open beneath me. "Mark? What's-?"

I wince as Invincible lunges forwards, and-. Hugs him?

"Hey, Will."

Mr. Clockwell looks at him askance. "Seriously, what's going on?"

"Something… Bad, Will." He leans a little to the side. "Hey Rick. Ah, look, you two… You two should get into a shelter or something. Somewhere safe."

"Ah…"

"Like… Now."

"W-. Where?"

Invincible hesitates. "Okay, I know it's messed up, but Sinclair's lab's still down there, right?

"Yeah. That is messed up."

"Look, it's underground and solidly built. I just want you to be safe this-. I want you to be safe."

Mr. Clockwell nod uncertainly. "Okay? But tell me what happened when it's over, okay?"

"Okay." Invincible nods. "Sure. Ah." He float away from the window. "I've got to go deal with… This. But seriously: both of you, underground, now."

Mr. Clockwell nods a little more confidently, then ducks back into his room.

Invincible flies up to roof-level, and then sags in the air.

"Jesus."

Scans show-. Ah. The Invincible who attacked the Global Defence Agency headquarters is dead at the hands of their security cyborgs, which means that there's far less need to hurry. And it's not like I want to destroy cities and murder millions of people. And… My job is to back Invincible up, and if he doesn't want to go somewhere-.

"He died. My-. Our Earth's version of William. He was like the second guy Doctor Sinclair targetted when he started making his zombots. I got there too late, and he was already… Sinclair got rid of his frontal lobe, so the G.D.A. couldn't fix him afterwards."

I… Nod, not really being sure what to say. Logically, Invincible would have had friends when he was just Mark Grayson, I just… It's a little difficult to imagine.

"And then Amber got in my face about trying to rescue my best friend instead of spending time with her-." He comes upright. "Okay, that's it. I don't need anything from Angstrom except a way back. Lantern, your mind control thing will work on him, right?"

"I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't."

"Take him the moment you get a clean shot."

"It's not instant, but I'll certainly try. Are we prioritising that?"

He breathes out heavily. "No. I still wanna kill Cecil, but… I wanna talk to this Mark, and… That weirdo with the full face mask had a point. I wanna talk to my mom."

He's clearly feeling vulnerable. This is the most open I've ever seen him. But…

But I'm not prepared to risk pointing out that she's not literally his mother. That she's probably going to spot that he's different to the local version of Invincible, particularly if she sees him fighting on television or if he just told her where he was going.

I suppose that as long as I keep track of where the others are then I can just move her out of the way. Fake a corpse.

I nod. Location.

"She's currently at your former home address. Cecil is still at the G.D.A. headquarters, and the Invincible who went there is dead."

"How?"

"It looks like he got mobbed by zombots and beaten to death."

Invincible takes a moment to absorb that.

"He did know we can fly, right?"

"I'm afraid that I wasn't observing the entire fight. The G.D.A. does have teleporters though, so perhaps they teleported them on top of him? Or he entered the building and got blindsided?"

Invincible shakes his head. "Idiot. Okay, Mom first, link up with the local Invincible, hunt down Angstrom and then kill Cecil. Let's get going. I don't want to give those other guys more time to screw things up for me."

It's interesting to see a version of Paul who's forced to pick the least bad choice, similar to Power Ring Blue. I can't wait to see how this will play out.

Ah, how timely, with the recent airing of this story arc on the 'Invincible' animation. I take it they brought this Mark in as one of the alternates, and he brought his Lantern along. Interesting that no other Invincible brought backup... Probably didn't have anyone they trusted that much.

True, at least they're still being given the choice at this stage. The Viltrumites could just have rolled in and demanded all human women of child-bearing age get pregnant with the Viltrumite's offspring. I suspect they did just that in more than one alternate.

If anything, I suspect he'd rather work disaster relief. Though we've seen other Orange Lanterns quickly run out of steam doing that sort of thing.

Huh, got his own little agenda. I can't imagine Angstrom didn't expect at least one betrayal, though.

So, Season 3, episode 7 of the animated series. Or the comic's equivalent arc. And it seems the Lantern's Mark has enough sense to know Angstrom's plan was gonna be bad for someone. I'm guessing his guilt over his own losses is going to make him stand with the local Invincible as an ally for as long as possible. There might be objections to his plan concerning Cecil, though.

Also, this is about ten months since we last saw this version of Paul, so he probably has a child by now? And I'm a little surprised that Vidor is still alive. (Edit: my mistake - https://forum.questionablequesting....-justice-si-thread-fourteen.8938/post-8921484 )

Come to think of it, if the lack of genetic diversity is the major present threat to the viltrumite empire, is that something Angstrom could help to solve by connecting various (slightly different) empires together?

A theory I saw online is that because they joined their dad, they didn't get the training that the main Mark got and had their dad there to help them in fights, so they didn't get stronger.

Honestly even if that Mark was weaker, it might not have actually mattered. The Cecil of this universe developed the sonic weapon that disabled the enemy mark while the reanimen snapped his neck.

Even the early gen reanimen were strong enough to hurt omniman, they just don't have the durability to last long enough to matter. So theoretically, as long as all the marks share the sonic weakness, it probably didn't matter who went to the gdc, they would likely be defeated unless they completely went all out at the start.

Probably some, not soon. The thing is, the divide isn't really League/Team any more. At this point it's Batman + Mr. Atom / Every other League member, associate and ally. They don't really get anything else if they get a title hike.

I've rereading old story arcs and I got up through when "Silver Age Supergirl" first appears, right before they visit Parallel 666. (As an aside, there are some characters who used to show up a lot, Ted Kord and native, science-focused Kara, that doesn't show up as much anymore.)

Four years later I'd just like to let everyone know that however suspicious you think she is, you're not being suspicious enough. Silver Age Kara first enters the scene when OL is alerted (by Hawkman) that a ship with Kryptonian Technology has entered the system. It is approaching "from the direction of Krypton". OL goes to investigate, finds it has kind of a rocket ship design, opens it up, and Kara pops out.

"I'm Kara Zor-El from the planet Krypton." She looks around, frowning. "I didn't think Earth would be this dark."

You notice here in some of her first words, Kara implies that she hasn't been to Earth before, that this is her "arrival" from Krypton. I lot of other things she claims over the following updates about superpowers being "new to her" and that her last meal was somewhere with Krypton native fruits seem to confirm the idea that she was... somewhere (Argo?) and was traveling to Earth for the first time. Pretty quickly though, she's claiming to have met (or been in contact with?) a version of Kal-El before.

New Kara looks slightly puzzled by Kal-El. "Ah. Yes, another universe. You are definitely not my Kal-El. And… You're another me?"

So how did she get here from her perspective? How did she end up in a Kyrptonian spaceship on her way to Earth? If you're waiting for answers to these questions, keep waiting because Kara never provides any explanation whatsoever. This is about as close as she comes.

I quoted that to demonstrate how "Silver Age Kara" sometimes says stuff like that as though she's taunting OL. What kind of deep cut knowledge of Earth culture do you need to be able to drop a "girlfriend from Canada" joke or drop a "take bath, hoppy" liine? She definitely knows stuff "about" Earth.

How enormously convenient.

So all that was from 2021. Let's look at a more recent update, December 31 of 2024.

"That wasn't a pick-up line. That was an honest enquiry about your life. Have you made any progress tracking your original parallel universe?"

"Oh, I haven't been looking!"

"Oh?"

"My Kal has it handled! And I have a life here now!"

"You don't think you should try and send him a message so that he doesn't worry?"

"He's got this great viewer thing! He used it to let his parents know that he made it to Earth safely! I'm sure he's found me by now!"

Did she imply that her version of Jor-El and Lara are still alive? Or is it some kind of "viewer thing" that can communicate through time? (Probably the latter.)

So I really have to handle it to Zoat. The subplot of "Silver Age Supergirl" has been boiling for about three and a half years of real time now. The SI has been kept just busy enough that he's never really had much time to investigate her, and with so much other crap going on I think he's pretty much chalked it up to "typical comic book weirdness". Maybe it is, maybe it is. But... this is a story that typically does at least try to explain things, and it seems kind of notable that there has been no good explanation of this person.

Oh, and one more thing. The last appearance of Nylor Truggs. Silver Age Kara was the person to capture Nylor Truggs.

I accelerate, following Kara's path until I emerge in a… Mad science warehouse, seeing Nylor dangling from Kara's hand.

Capture him, but also lure OL to the mad science warehouse where Truggs has his lair. She then frees demon Supergirl from storage.

"There was a sarcopha-huh." She coughs, wincing. "Sarcophagus, in the basement. The ditz opened it to 'free the mummy'."

She then claims that Truggs escapes in a puff of smoke. No one else witnesses this.

"Kara, please explain to me where Nylor Truggs is?"

"'Poof'."

"Poof?"

"He was sitting there, then 'poof', there was a cloud, and when it vanished he was gone."

Note that Truggs has been paralyzed by having part of his spine burned out and blinded and had his hands and feet chopped off. I guess some ally rescued him and got him to a backup safehouse, with through a cloud of smoke. Or... picking him up and flying him there.

Kara claims that of course Kryptonite from this universe didn't work on her because she's from a parallel universe. Even OL is skeptical.

"I've been to parallel universes before. I didn't have any problem with the kryptonians not being compatible with my kryptonite samples."

So... what the hell does all this mean? Was she somehow working with Truggs all along? I don't know. Silver Age Supergirl acts like a goofy silver age character, except occasionally when she doesn't. Orange Lantern has never seriously investigated her, mostly due to constantly having to deal with other things. She has shown up here and there through many arcs since then, always a little "off".

Anyone have any good theories about what really might be going on with her?

Truggs is working with Circe, so she probably bailed him out. As for Silver Age Kara, I think she really is genuine. It reminds me of the story where Earth-One Supergirl met Linda Danvers Supergirl and finds out things don't work the way she thinks she does because New Earth isn't Earth-One.
