With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

"Look, I know I personally killed thousands and committed actions that led to the death of millions more, including people you love and care about. And that's on me. I accept that now. I've looked back at my behavior during these past few months and can readily admit I've done some things I'm not proud of. But I was dealing with a lot, so I don't think I should take all the blame for my actions. Maybe 50%. Yeah, that sounds about right. Anyway, you seem pretty put out about what I did, so to make it up to you, I'm going to let you leave this world for one that is disconcertingly and uncannily similar. This may be your home, the only world you've ever known, and contain any still-living family and friends you might have, but you seem pretty down right now and I think this will completely make it up to you. And if you think I'm not sacrificing anything here, you're wrong; I still feel really bad, and I'll have to carry that burden for the rest of my life or until I don't care anymore."
To be fair, she didn't actually like her adopted parents.

Viltrumites and humans are incredibly compatible, socially, with humans. Too compatible, from the Viltrumite point if view, because it means Viltrumites end up preferring human cultures to a proper imperial lifestyle
'Proper Imperial', you say?

Really, it's not his fault so many people are so willing to commit mass suicide. Your strongest heroes couldn't stop them and they have a proven willingness to slaughter just about anyone and everyone who tries to stand up to them. (This Eve is literally only alive because this Mark wanted to fuck her. Literally everyone else that opposed Alt-Mark and Alt-Omni-Man was killed.)

But surely another act of resistance will work where all others failed miserably.

I think I'd prefer it if Mark remained a believer in the benefits of the Viltrum Empire instead of apparently being willing to try to subvert it, but humanizing the Viltrumites is something that works so it should probably work. Conquest isn't the only Viltrumite that's lonely, though most of the others probably haven't figured it out yet.
Some people would literally rather die than surrender, that's just how humans are.

Sometimes they are right to keep fighting, sometimes they are not, but it is irrelevant because their fundamental nature is to keep fighting anyway.

And fighting against the Viltrumites is the right thing to do, and not just from a moral standpoint.

The Viltrumites wiped out large portions of their own people for being weak, so why wouldn't they do the same to humans.

Yeah they need them to rebuild their population, but once there are enough new Viltrumites to maintain a healthy population, what's stopping them from wiping out humanity.

They have the numbers to maintain themselves, so humans are worthless now.

Heck, maybe Thragg will have the new Viltrumites wipe out humanity to "cleanse themselves of their weak heritage" or some such Nazi bullshit.

And Anissa did mention that while Viltrumites do make life good for those they conquer, that's not permanent.

They remove any resources a world has until it's dead.

Humans are screwed no matter what. Might as well go down fighting.

"You killed-"
"-hundreds-"
"-of thousands-"
"-of people-"
"-because-"
"-you thought you should?!"
Eh, not the stupidest thought process you see in the average teenager. Mark just happens to have a lot more weight behind his decisions.

I hold out my right hand again, realising that on top of everything else both of the people I'm dealing with here are teenagers.
Wonder if this SI concealed his age. I suspect that Mark assumed his buddy was about his own age and the SI just never disagreed.

"If the only thing that can beat a viltrumite is another stronger viltrumite... Then we need to make sure that the next generation is on our side."
She says while floating beside a non-viltrumite who has proven he can beat viltrumites.
Not that it is a bad plan, cultural assimilation is a very effective tactic if you have the time for it.

Something I find darkly amusing is that this long term plan is possibly going to turn out to be completely irrelevant as the Coalition of Planets is working on a new super version of their bioweapon. The old version was essentially a perfect tool of genocide as it reduced a population of Viltrumites in the Millions or potentially Billioms down to less than a hundred.

This is darkly amusing as a major plot point of later invincible is that the new bio weapon can also kill humans. It is described as being so deadly that even a single vial opened in the Earth atmosphere would be enough to exterminate humanity.

The Superbioweapon is a threat Orange Lantern and the Viltrumite Empire are totally unprepared for as they are not aware of the new bio weapon program (I don't think the Viltrumites even know the original plague was artificially created) and don't have anything like enough defenses to keep an extremely small drone ship with a few vials from entering the atmosphere of Earth and other planets with a Viltrumite population.

Paul might survive if he is constantly maintaining a filter barrier or the disease kills slow enough that his desire for a return to health purges it from his body but curing everyone in time would be way beyond his powers. Eve would be in a similar situation as she could resurrect herself but does not have enough control to cure others of a disease.

Nothing Orange Lantern has done has disrupted canon enough for the Coalition of Planets to abandon their bioweapon program and his work helping the Viltrumites restore their population is only going to further incentivize them to develop and use the super bioweapon on Earth.

The super bio weapon was revealed in almost the final arc of the Invincible series so it will be some time before this is relevant but it seems inevitable without author intervention.

The Invincible SI storyline has been a huge downer overall. Usually in these realities the SI finds a way to "fix" things and make them better. Even Blue Lantern with the Crime Syndicate, he's not dealing with the "so crazy evil they can't even understand goodness" version but people who do have some humanity. In the Invincible Universe he's been reduced to nothing but mitigating some of the damage while making himself complicit in a lot of terrible shit.

And... maybe that's fine. It's good to have some variation in these stories, and the occasional downer reality is a change of pace.

If this update represents some kind of turning point where the three of them are going to start fighting out how to oppose the Viltrumite Empire, then one thing I'd really hope to see if Paul seeking out more information. Right now most of what they know about the Viltrumites comes from the Viltrumites. I understand why he's been reluctant to just randomly wander off into space to find alien civilizations, but if Invincible is on board now they ought to be able to get some basic information about the existence of the Coalition of Planets and where it is so that Janissary can find some information about the Viltrumites from an outside source. Next time the story returns to this reality anyway.

Janissary doesn't even know that the Coalition of Planets exists. Mark probably does, but the Viltrumite Empire has no reason to let their latest acquisition learn about it.

What do people call the Invincible Orange Lantern? Did he pick a name, or is it just Orange Lantern?

Jevek called him Matthew

Also I think the invincible updates have been a breath of fresh air, I dunno about its staying power, but the fact things are harder on both Paul and the world makes it more interesting... For example I am just intrigued by possible future interactions between Paul and General Thrak (whatever spelling) as Paul has become a strategic asset and the general was nominally one of the fastest to succumb to Earth culture and the insidiousness of empathy, so it should be easier for Paul to work his logical magic on the dude.

Yes, that's why I said "but if Invincible is on board now". Janissary can't get the info on "aliens who are not Viltrumites", but Mark can ask Omniman to tell him about major alien powers, pass the info to OL, and send Janissary on "an extended secret mission" or something.

Well I'm a little surprised Paul didn't make more of a point of pinning Invincible on his thoughts.
Something along the lines of "So you're Pro free Earth?" "Against the Empire taking over?" "Against all this murder?"
"Doing what you think so Earth can survive?" "You'll help more?"
Maybe calling Invincible by his Name would help Humanize him more, ground him.
Maybe if everyone agrees out loud that Empire Bad getting free good then sending and hopefully receiving important information to "Good" Invincible would be beneficial. Heads up about Conquest and other dangers. The low population of the Empire…intel good.
Obviously farming tech or people from other Earths….

Fair enough, but at least he's still offering her a way out, which is way more than what the other Viltrumites would have done. It doesn't make up for what he did, but it's a start.
