With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

"Oh El, that's two powerful metahumans who aren't immediately threatening anyone. You should wait for backup. Canis?"

Been meaning to ask, but wasn't the reason OL did't involve Robin from the beginning because Robin was in school? Did school let out while they were investigating?

"Yes." Kara tilts her head slightly to the left. "Thank you for being here. It's really.. convenient."

"I know!" She nods excitedly. "I haven't been following you at all!"

Her denial is raising a lot of questions already answered by the denial.

"I don't think my super vision is working!"

Sorry, I don't get the joke either.

-the explosions start at once, which implies that they can still use satellite monitoring

Odd they can use the satellite monitoring, but obviously not the teleport because they've been depending on a regular car for transportation.

It's cool to see Kara II back. A lot of call backs to prior plotlines converging here.

Been meaning to ask, but wasn't the reason OL did't involve Robin from the beginning because Robin was in school? Did school let out while they were investigating?
Robin doesn't ever completely disconnect. And with grades like his he can usually duck into a quiet corner for a moment.

That's the reason, and not because I forgot that I wrote that.
Sorry, I don't get the joke either.
'Super vision' means 'vision that's really super'. 'Supervision' means 'keeping an eye on things and making sure that everyone is doing what they're supposed to be doing'. The SI is implying that he's supposed to be supervising Kara and isn't doing a god job.

'Operative'
or
'their hands'

I suppose it's not shocking that if Brother Eye can teleport energy into OMACs, it can teleport it to other people too. Though it seems like Oh El might be lucky it didn't appear inside him rather than the air around him; that might have instantly killed him. Maybe the targetting by the Operatives is crude. Though in that case it's a little surprising they hit Supergirl II, so maybe it's just a limitation of the technology.

'they'
'attack'

Haha. Well, Paul only knows exactly why she did that, but it lends credence to that guy who thought that this Supergirl is evil, or at least acting a lot more innocent than she really is. If she is working with the Light, it would make sense for her to be assigned to Oh El, both due to his general importance and the specific fact that he seems to be going after the GPA, which they are probably very worried about.
How long has she been following him? I guess she can see him wherever he goes on Earth with her super-X-ray vision, so maybe she even followed him to the Himalayas? Would be a bit tiresome to fly back and forth whenever he teleports somewhere. Maybe she stayed in orbit so she could use her full acceleration without being conspicuous?

'wheels'

That makes no sense at all. Where the hell would the Light get a kryptonian? If she's from space, how would they even know where to find her in the first place? If she's a clone, did they somehow clone her without Cadmus?

Furthermore, if she really had negative or harmful intentions towards Paul, he would have sensed her desire to spy on him and betray him, right?

Thank you, corrected.

Did no one get the supervision joke, or is it so obvious that it's not worth commenting on?

It completely passed me by too, this version of Kara would just say "I don't need super vision to follow you!" so it didn't scan as a joke. OL would also apologise to a distressed young lady that her sight isn't working, because he's British.

By pure coincidence Kara practices an esoteric form of Kryptonian martial arts that shields her from OL's empathy due to her intense spiritual control, which definitely seems in line with everything else about her personality, right?

Yeah, but that doesn't make her a mole for the Light. If anything, it's a good argument for why she can't be a mole, because how the hell would the Light even know about that stuff? They barely know anything at all about Kryptonian culture, so how would they even know anything at all about Toquasm or whatnot? It just raises too many questions.

Actual Silver Age Kara showed up and they used alternate kryptonite they stole from a parallel earth (remember how they were raiding demon earth-666) to disable her and then make an EVIL clone which is this one.

I agree that the Light originating a fake Silver Age Supergirl complete with fake Toquasm would be very odd. If they wanted to produce a fake hero to infiltrate the Earth's heroes, they'd make Tomorrow Girl or something.

If Kara II is secretly working with the Light, it would probably be because she approached them. Which still yields no light (hah-hah) on her actual origins and motivations, assuming for the moment that she has been deceiving OL about her origins and motivations.

They suck at cloning kryptonians, though. The last time they tried that, we got Kon and Match. I seriously doubt that they would somehow be able to succeed with the limited cloning tech they have, because otherwise, if Happy Kara was a clone, she would be as rabid as match, or at the very least she wouldn't be mentally coherent enough to learn Torquasm. The Light are much better at cloning humans or half-human hybrids than full Kryptonians.

Okay, no. That makes no sense, and it just raises even MORE questions, such as:

One, how would Kara even know about the Light in the first place? She's from SPACE. There's no way she would know bout such a small and secretive organization when she's new to Earth, not to mention that the Light can hide its members from Kryptonians quite easily, so Kara wouldn't be able to find them either.

Two, she's also from a parallel universe, and we have no indication that a version of The Light even exists in whichever universe she came from, which makes it even less likely that she would know about them. Plus, even if the Light did exist in her world, why do you assume she'd even be on good terms with them?

Three, even if what you said is true and she somehow did find and approach The Light, why the hell would they even trust her or accept her in their ranks? Think about it: Even if we put aside the fact that many members have good reasons to fear and distrust Kryptonians, don't you think that some random person with the exact same powers as one of your greatest enemies just randomly showing up at your doorstep would be just a little bit suspicious? Especially if it's someone who just happens to bear a striking resemblance to other girls with similar powers that are associated with both Paul and the JLA (Noriel and Overgirl)? Especially if she somehow knows where your base is despite the fact that nobody is supposed to know where you are, and somehow knows what The Light is despite the fact that it's supposed to be an extremely well-guarded secret? I'm sorry, but no. The mere idea that The Light would just accept someone like that in their organization is monumentally stupid, unless they think she's a spy and are trying to keep an eye on her. Or at the very least, they would try to strap her to an operating table to dissect her brain to find out what she is, how she works, or how she knows all this stuff she shouldn't know.

I grunt in disappointment as I jink aside, tossing the car and generating a vertigo inducer construct. Feels like a while since I've used one of those. Neither of the Operatives react to it, one-. He's using a plasma aura around his body to change direction in mid-air to clumsily fly after me, and the other-

Blam!

-just blasted himself away because they're doing a sacrificial play.

Whoever programmed their brains did good work, but the fact is that it's just not adequate to the situation.

I ignore the one running, create an ion cannon and fire at the decoy. His plasma field fails immediately, dropping him to the ground. He lands well, rolls and comes up to a crouch but my claw construct is already there and tearing his New God belt off his waist.

"No!"

Interesting that doing that didn't make him feel fear, but after a brief delay his body begins shrivelling up in the same way that Mr. Blank's did. Not quite as far, because this is someone who took a bit more exercise-.

"Stanley Adams."

"Whu-?"

"Your name, sir. Stanley Ad-."

"I don't.. use…"

"I know, and I will ensure-" I send the belt into subspace and land, depositing him on the tarmac. If nothing else I can get Canis to look at the bloody thing. "-that you get actual therapy, instead of a mind wipe. But-."

Kara appears in front of me, the other Operative hanging from her right hand, stripped of his belt. "I got him!"

"Good work. Um. Where's his belt?"

She smiles broadly. "I tossed it!"

"You tossed-? Kara, do you remember our 'what goes up must come down' talk?"

"Oh, I aimed!" She nods emphatically. "I guarantee that it won't hit anything that anyone worth caring about cares about."

"Anyone at all!"

"Okay." I'll find out where it went later. "Can you put that guy down-. Put on the ground, not drop."

She doesn't look even slightly guilty as she descends to ground level and releases her hold. I attach ultra-strength chains to both of them, which is probably excessive without their belts but I'd rather not take the risk.

"Okay, Stanley-."

"Why are you restraining me? I was doing useful work!"

"Yes, you were doing useful work, then you decided to abandon your worksite and drive across the country. I'm trying to find out why."

"Huh?" He blinks, his mouth hanging open for a moment. Then he looks around. "Where-? I wasn't… Here…"

"Stanley, a few of your friends have been worried about you. Do you remember why you agreed to become a Peace Operative?"

"I…"

He looks up at me, but he's not struggling against his bonds anymore and looks more confused than angry.

"The video…"

"Yes, I understand that it's standard practise for Peace Operatives to create a video before the mind wipe happens. What did yours say?"

"It-. Ah, that I.. tried to go back to my old life, but couldn't handle it without that-. The sense of purpose I got from being a Justifier. I don't remember it now, but I think that makes sense. I know I haven't had a problem since I got this done."

"What's the most recent thing you remember?"

"Tossing cars in a portal?"

"Is that a question or a statement?"

"I-. I'm not-." He blinks heavily, shaking his head. "That's the last thing I remember clearly…"

"But?"

"Ah… The Peace Agents are always completely clear about what we're doing and why. And I don't remember being told… But it was like I got an order without getting an order?"

"Did Mannheim ever give you orders personally?"

"I-" He shakes his head. "Wouldn't remember either way. Do you.. think he did it? Is he even still alive?"

Check location…

"He's alive because he got affected by something even stronger than what the Justifiers got, but I don't see how he could have done anything to you as he is now. You don't feel that compulsion now?"

"No, I just… Feel confused. My partner might be able to tell you more." I look at the other Operative, who appears to be a little woozy from Kara's treatment. "No, no, the A.I. they pair us with. It should have been monitoring me-. Or it might have been affected too." He suddenly looks a lot more concerned. "I don't know what I'd do without him."

"Alright. Robin, you get all that?"

"I can't believe someone infiltrated their command and control system already. I'll call the G.P.A."

"Good. Supergirl, please gently take these gentlemen to Robin. Can you do that?"

"Sure thing!"

"Thank you. Canis?"

"He is.. gone."

"Gone?"

"It is as if he used a boom tube without leaving any residue."

"A hush tube?"

"I know of no such device."

"They exist, and they're quieter. I just-."

My armour flashes up an alert as the cars carrying the other five Operatives vanish.

"They've got the others. We need to know where they are-."

Emergency alert from: Ted Kord.

Ehh, to be fair this isn't necessarily proof that she's working for them.

She honestly may not give a shit about Luthor.

Silver Age (?) Kara continues to be…confusing. But like in an interesting way. Like she does seem to genuinely want to do good, but also I'm reminded of a really old Superman comic where he…I think either threatened someone into testifying or threatened them into not testifying about something.

Like, hey, I don't think you're supposed to be doing that, guy. But also, I guess you did save a solar system last week so we're kinda just gonna gloss over that.

Agreed. Considering that Lex was confused and surprised, it's very unlikely that he was even aware that she was with Paul and fighting OMACs. After all, if he was in on it, he would know what's going on, and he would have deduced that the belt came from Paul and Kara fighting OMACs.

Ah, that explains it. One keeps him busy, the other flees. Too bad he's got backup.

Whoever programmed their brains did good work, but the fact is that it's just not adequate to the situation.

I ignore the one running, create a ion cannon and fire at the decoy. His plasma field fails immediately, dropping him to the ground. He lands well, rolls and comes up to a crouch but my claw construct is already there and tearing his New God belt off his waist.
Ah, one significant weakness, though most people would be unable to exploit it, either by not knowing or by being unable to grapple effectively.

"No!"

Interesting that doing that didn't make him feel fear, but after a brief delay his body begins shrivelling up in the same way that Mr. Blank's did. Not quite as far, because this is someone who took a bit more exercise-.
Wonder if that makes him stronger when transformed or if they all get bumped up to the same level.

"Stanley Adams."

"Whu-?"

"Your name, sir. Stanley Ad-."
I guess it took the guy a second to remember, or to adjust to the sudden loss of any exotic senses he might have had slotted.

"I don't.. use…"

"I know, and I will ensure-" I send the belt into subspace and land, depositing him on the tarmac. If nothing else I can get Canis to look at the bloody thing. "-that you get actual therapy, instead of a mind wipe. But-."
TO be fair to him, he might have tried that and found it lacking. Unless OL has a line on some supernaturally good therapists.

Kara appears in front of me, the other Operatives hanging from her right hand, stripped of his belt. "I got him!"

"Good work. Um. Where's his belt?"
Ah, good. He was no match for the broken-as-hell Pre-Crisis Kryptonian.

She smiles broadly. "I tossed it!"

"You tossed-? Kara, do you remember our 'what goes up must come down' talk?"

"Oh, I aimed!" She nods emphatically. "I guarantee that it won't hit anything that anyone worth caring about cares about."
And the Law of Narrative Causality will see it end up in the worst hands possible, then.

Lex? Speaking of worst hands... Hopefully he can't grok the New God stuff, or there'll be trouble in future.

"Anyone at all!"

"Okay." I'll find out where it went later. "Can you put that guy down-. Put on the ground, not drop."
We can only hope he gets a call from Lex later.

She doesn't look even slightly guilty as she descends to ground level and releases her hold. I attach ultra-strength chains to both of them, which is probably excessive without their belts but I'd rather not take the risk.

"Okay, Stanley-."
Better safe than sorry, OL. Though you might need to have a word with Kara about the use of appropriate force. And not holding grudges.

"Why are you restraining me? I was doing useful work!"

"Yes, you were doing useful work, then you decided to abandon your worksite and drive across the country. I'm trying to find out why."
It's like he's completely unaware of his recent actions. Very concerning.

"Huh?" He blinks, his mouth hanging open for a moment. Then he looks around. "Where-? I wasn't… Here…"

"Stanley, a few of your friends have been worried about you. Do you remember why you agreed to become a Peace Operative?"
Oh, he's definitely been mind-whammied somehow. It's like his memory's been blanked out from the point he went AWOL.

"I…"

He looks up at me, but he's not struggling against his bonds anymore and looks more confused than angry.

"The video…"
Even he seems uncertain of everything. He's gonna need some check-ups before returning to service.

I know I haven't had a problem since I got this done."
...Until now. Still, if it's not his fault he got hacked, he should be okay to return to duty after some careful examination...

"What's the most recent thing you remember?"

"Tossing cars in a portal?"

"Is that a question or a statement?"
I mean, given how badly he got controlled, he may honestly not be sure he didn't imagine it. He could have been in an illusion of doing his job until OL depowered him.

"I-. I'm not-." He blinks heavily, shaking his head. "That's the last thing I remember clearly…"

"But?"
Okay, definite signs of mental manipulation.

"Ah… The Peace Agents are always completely clear about what we're doing and why. And I don't remember being told… But it was like I got an order without getting an order?"

"Did Mannheim ever give you orders personally?"
So someone definitely routed it through 'correct' channels, or bypassed them via the New God technology. A definite point of weakness, and hopefully Batman can patch that.

At the rate he's going, it's going to be public knowledge about Mannheim. I mean, more than it is already.

Wait, every agent has their own personal AI partner? Where did they come from? Are they fully sophont, or just smart enough to feel smart?

"Alright. Robin, you get all that?"

"I can't believe someone infiltrated their command and control system already. I'll call the G.P.A."
I mean, it's been a few weeks since they went live, and what, a week, since they went public? Every new technology suffers its' early adopter issues.

"Good. Supergirl, please gently take these gentlemen to Robin. Can you do that?"

"Sure thing!"
Don't forget that missing belt...

"Thank you. Canis?"

"He is.. gone."
Well, spit.

"Gone?"

"It is as if he used a boom tube without leaving any residue."
So either someone snagged him via Hush Tube, or he was able to access one.

"A hush tube?"

"I know of no such device."
I would figure they're not commonly known for political reasons, plus they require exotic materials to construct.

"They exist, and they're quieter. I just-."

My armour flashes up an alert as the cars carrying the other five Operatives vanish.
...Well, fuck.

"They've got the others. We need to know where they are-."

Emergency alert from: Ted Kord.
When it rains, it pours. Bet that's where they went now that their cover's blown.

So, whoever's behind this has abandoned subtlety and is now going for smash-and-grab, most likely. I expect they're going for the orb thing, which Ted was holding onto if I remember right. So we'll hopefully find out who is involved in the next chapter or two, and whether it's Hatter or not, or if he's just a patsy in all this...

There was a comic where he basically destroyed several buildings to force the government to repair them and improve them.

Agreed. Considering that Lex was confused and surprised, it's very unlikely that he was even aware that she was with Paul and fighting OMACs. After all, if he was in on it, he would know what's going on, and he would have deduced that the belt came from Paul and Kara fighting OMACs.

I'm surprised it's that easy to disable these guys. Seems like a huge vulnerability, though I suppose maybe they do have good countermeasures against them being removed and those countermeasures just aren't sufficient against a particularly powerful Lantern or kryptonian.

Doesn't really feel indicative in either direction, since it does seem like the sort of childish thing she'd do, while also possibly being a surreptitious method of slipping technology to Luthor. Though it does make me feel like Mr Zoat is playing to the idea that she could be a traitor, so it's a bit suspicious on a meta level.
"You tossed-? Kara, do you remember our 'what goes up must come down' talk?"
Only if it doesn't go into space! Or get stuck after hitting a plane!
"Why are you restraining me? I was doing useful work!"
Interesting how he seems a lot more coherent than Buddy did. I can't remember, was it already stated that Buddy was an early subject and the procedure has been improved?
Also, I like how despite the OMACs being mind wiped and brainwashed into being interchangeable, they still have their own personalities to some extent and don't act like robots.
"Gone?"

"A hush tube?"

"They exist, and they're quieter. I just-."

Very strange. I wonder what the point of mucking about with the Operatives was if they had hush tubes? Maybe they needed time to lock on to Tetch and the Operatives were there as a distraction for Oh El because they expected that he'd be contacted by Tuppence if they left?
Could the Reach be involved, somehow? They certainly have the technology to hack the OMAC network. Maybe they're trying to screw with Earth while it's vulnerable, and maybe trying to distract Paul to keep him on Earth for some reason.
It's an interesting idea, but I would be a bit surprised if they were competent at hacking New God technology and more surprised if they had hush tubes.

I think it's someone high-ranking in the Justice League (Batman, Mister Atom, Brother Eye, all of the above) using a secret command method in the OMACs to make it seem like they were hacked. That would also fit with the idea of them being smart enough and informed enough about what Oh El and gang are doing to make an effective distraction play then attack Ted Kord for the orb.

Of course it could be someone from Apokolips, but I'd be surprised if they came back so soon.

I still have no real idea of the reason for the importance of Tetch or the orb. The only thing that comes to mind, given that the orb kind of lined up with Anti-Life broadcaster locations (it did, right?) is that Tetch knows how to re-establish them or something like that, and then they could be used for broadcasting something other than Anti-Life? But I'm not sure that they'd need his help to set that up (I wasn't under the impression that it was actually very complex) and I'm not sure why anyone would want to do it, unless it's just someone wanting to take over the world again.

Canus did mention that whoever was in the orb thing could potentially get reality warping power, so that may be why they'd be so interested in him.

Ehh, to be fair this isn't necessarily proof that she's working for them.

She honestly may not give a shit about Luthor.
To be fair, Silver Age Luthor was an even bigger jerk than average for the Silver Age, and if Kara II both is Silver Age Kara and was on Earth One for longer than she says (which I think has been hinted at), her having a lot of antipathy for Lex is reasonable.

If Kara II is a comicbook fan from Earth Prime in the body of a Silver Age Kryptonian, she'd similarly have reasons to hate Lex (and it could explain some of her behavior, as could her being somehow connected to the Queen of Fables). Of course, her being an insert of that type is a bit odd, but not completely out-of-line for this story.

You see, it's shit like this. I'm not saying Kara II is evil, but she is definitely a troll who enjoys playing dumb and "screwing up" so that she can do things to mess with people.

Flying down and blatantly telling OL that "I wasn't watching you". Tossing the Peace Agent belt into Luthor's office. These weren't accidents, these were someone who enjoys having a good joke while blinking innocently and going, 'who me?!".

Honestly, I'd think she was Mister Mxyzptlk in disguise, because he definitely has the power to fake being a Kryptonian, but Mxy doesn't have the patience for a long game like this. Maybe another Fifth Dimensional Imp?

Regardless, Kara II is fucking with people on purpose. No doubt in my mind.

Considering that the Silver Age is the birthplace of Superdickery, that makes way too much sense.

It's an interesting idea, but I would be a bit surprised if they were competent at hacking New God technology and more surprised if they had hush tubes.

True, but remember: OMACs aren't 100% New God tech, aren't they? They've probably got some elements of Earrh xenotech in there too, otherwise how could a world as relatively primitive as ours mass-produce them?

If she is working for them then she may just not have reported yet.

Do you honestly believe that Lex wouldn't be constantly keeping an eye on her, if that was the case? I already listed in a previous post the myriad reasons why The Light would not trust her and how they would be abysmally stupid to just let her join them right here:

With all that in mind, let me ask again: If she really was a member of The Light, do you honestly believe that Lex wouldn't be keeping track of her movements at all times?

We know they have Amazo tech in them.

If I remember the explanation correctly, the Amazo tech is the receiver that picks up the broadcasted powers.

Considering how many times the JLA has encountered Amazos before, I wouldn't be surprised if Batman had the knowledge to make his own Amazo robot. Hell, with a power ring, making an Amazo would probably be a cakewalk for someone like Batman.
