With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

Linda died, and with no Noriel around her will was enacted. That authorised Grayven to use her body for 'fucked up' magic.
If I remember correctly, the only reason her parents allowed this is because the Renegade told them that letting Gloria possess Linda's body lets Linda's soul out of Hell.

She rub awkwardly at her neck where the 'nicotine patch' is stuck. The problem with being a demon is that… Well, you're a demon. Basic thaumatics requires them to fuel themselves on vice and suffering, and while being plumbed into a living human body cuts down her energy expenditure, she still has needs that can't be indulged in normal human society. So Sunset came up with a minor 'suffering tap' to draw upon ambient suffering and she hasn't tortured a guinea pig to death in about a year.
"Demons are never truly happy, just less miserable. Their highest form of pleasure is schadenfreude. This is a fundamental limit to your nature. If you will not change your nature, then… This uncertainty, this nervousness, will remain with you until your fears are finally proven true."

That's not quite true. There are many different kinds of demons in DC cosmology that work in different ways, and many of them have shown the ability to reform and live happy lives without making people suffer.

In other words, demons aren't evil because their nature dictates them to be, they're evil if they they choose to be dicks.

I don't recall any actual Hell demon (as opposed to other things that are also called demons) that lived a 'good' life without a constant ongoing struggle against their nature.

In fact thats usually one of the major core plot elements of demon\half-demon character's story arcs; the struggle to not be what they are.

I have truly missed the renegade.

Sad we didnt get Luna bits, but i do hope we can see more soon from our favorite New God
I want to see if she can manipulate the matter of the Earth's moon. Moonrock golems, magical moonrock defenses that spring up from beneath Colorado if a spaceship takes aim... I don't really know how practical moon powers are without space travel, but I hope she got something.

I never actually watched the cartoon.

"I think you should consider it. Significant advantages and the only downsides relate to things you aren't actually doing. I could talk to…" Ah. "My brother Scott, who could talk to our sister in law about Source-approved sensuality."
... OK, I'm blanking on who the sister-in-law in question is, since 'our' was used. Help?

I watch as Gloria scurries away… As much as a pregnant woman can really 'scurry'. I'm not sure why. A demon's normal instinct is to suck up to the boss as much as possible, and that's definitely me in this situation. What I did to her should cause her to accept change and novel experiences for what they are… For as long as she accepts a solution from me. She shouldn't even really notice that she's doing it. But nothing about that…

Eh, I suppose it doesn't matter. I can-.

The Boy lands next to me, wings turning back into arms as soon as he's nullified his momentum. They've all gotten rather good at that. Miss Dash was briefly curious, until it turned out that without a way to approximate pegasus pony magic there wasn't really anything she could teach them.

I give him a broad smile. "Son!"

"Fa-"

I wrap my arms around him, picking him up so that I can embrace him to my chest.

"-ther."

I release him at once, a look of grave concern on my face. "Oh? What have I done?"

He blinks. "Done?"

"I call Darkseid 'Father' because I hate him. I only called Dad 'Father' when he did something annoying or stupid. If you're being self-conscious about me hugging you, too bad, boy."

"No? I-."

I extend my right hand and rub his head.

"How about now?"

"No, F-. Dad."

I remove my hand. "See? That wasn't hard. Now, what could possibly have persuaded you to leave your younger siblings to their own devices."

He tenses slightly. "Lynne and Cassandra are looking after them."

I nod, smiling to try and communicate that I didn't mean it as a slight. "And Knockout, and Persuader, and a small army of g-elves. I merely note that it's unusual for you to let them out of your sight. I actually think it's a good thing. I respect your sense of responsibility, but they are their own people."

"Yes-. Dad. Um. I wanted to ask you something… About… Us."

I nod slowly. "Us..?"

"My blood siblings. About… Blood. Because we're.. vampires."

"You can ask me anything. I can always say 'no'."

He looks down for a moment, trying to organise his thoughts. "Do you think..? Are we..? Supposed to.. avoid..?" He sags a little. "Are we not allowed to drink blood?"

"I don't remember telling you not to drink blood."

"No, but… We don't.. feel the blood hunger any more, and… Sunset says that we're healthy… As far as she can tell."

I nod, because… They are. If there was any sign that the alchemical concoction I dose them with to dim their instincts was harming them, then… I'd have to take a few ill-advised risks very quickly. So I keep a careful eye on all of their test results, changes in their behaviour… Anything like that.

"But… Miss Gloria said-"

My head tilts us so that I can affix my eyes to her back. "Ah."

"-that if we… Didn't, then we'd never get as strong as we could be. But you've spent a lot of time making it so we didn't need to, so I thought you didn't want us to."

"I don't want you to turn into a ravening beast, no. Do you want to drink blood?"

"I.. don't know? It's-." He hesitates again. "Did you know that Lynne's stronger than m-? She's stronger than us?"

New God patterned after me, versus… Honestly, Lynne's just lucky that her skin hasn't turned grey. "No, I didn't."

"We found out when we helped with the setting up." He looks around. "She could carry more stuff than-. Than me. And she didn't get tired."

"I'm not totally surprised by that. New God Elites are fairly powerful."

"And so I asked Miss Gloria how I could get stronger."

"And she pointed out that you don't do things that would fully empower either your demon or vampire sides."

"She-. Yes."

I regard him curiously. "And?"

"And she.. wasn't very polite about it."

I could be annoyed about that, but I knew that she was a demon when I hired her. I just nod. "Something along the lines of… 'You'll always be weak if you refuse the power you were born to'?"

"… Sort of."

I shrug. "Boy, I give you and your natural siblings those drugs so that you're not compelled to tear people apart like rabid animals. Because I want you to have the capability to make decisions for yourselves. If it's something that you've decided to do for yourself, then I don't have a problem with it-. Ah, though I'm going to insist that you hold off experimenting with your incubus powers until you're at least sixteen."

"Oh."

"On Apokolips, if you don't seize every advantage you can to keep yourself safe, then you end up a slave if you're lucky. There are vampires who learn to function within human society despite drinking blood, and if that's the route you want to go down, then you have my support."

He looks up at me nervously. "How..? Would it.. work?"

"You remember General Fang?" He nods. "The Chinese have a remarkably efficient form of execution. You see, they recognised that there was always a shortage of organs for donation. And of course China is very big, and transporting organs long distance reduced their viability for transplant, so… How to square that circle? Transport the person you were going to execute to a hospital, bring the patients there, then do it as a job lot."

"Wouldn't..? Wouldn't the lethal injection damage the organs?"

"Heh. Heh." I shake my head. "'No one's ever survived one of their organ donation procedures before, but I imagine that if one did they'd work something out." He looks confused-. He hasn't watched that film. Right. "Son, those under my command kill dozens of people every day at a bare minimum. If you want to try eating one of them, you can just say so. They were going to die anyway; we may as well get some use out of them first."

"O.. kay. Should I.. stop taking the medicine?"

"Not… To begin with, I think. It may be that the feral hunger overtakes you only when you're starving, or it may be that that's your natural state. We won't know until you try, and I think we'd both rather err on the side of caution." He nods. "Do you want me to come along, or would that be awkward?"

"I'd.. like it if you came with me. Just.. in case something goes wrong."

I nod. "No problem. I'll set something up and then come and fetch you. Alright?"

He smiles faintly, and nods. "Yes. Thank you-. Father."

I snort, then give him a gentle shove in the direction of the play area. "Get on with you, boy. Go play with your friends. I'll check in on your siblings. And, ah… When your incubus powers start coming in, you know you can talk to me about those too, right?" He nods. "Good lad. Off you go."

And now I've got to contact Jade and find out what malcontent is on the menu.

Though it'll be some time before we see any positive or negative results of the process, I expect. Fortunately, motherhood should be enough change and novel experiences to keep her occupied for a long time yet.

Ah, the vampire-succubus child known as Paul. Good to see him and his siblings flexing their inheritance.

I give him a broad smile. "Son!"

"Fa-"

I wrap my arms around him, picking him up so that I can embrace him to my chest.
Heh, the classic embarrassing hug.

"-ther."

I release him at once, a look of grave concern on my face. "Oh? What have I done?"
Typical Renegade, trolling at every opportunity.

He blinks. "Done?"

"I call Darkseid 'Father' because I hate him. I only called Dad 'Father' when he did something annoying or stupid. If you're being self-conscious about me hugging you, too bad, boy."
He's a teenager. Crippling self-consciousness comes with the territory even before you get to the succupire traits.

"No? I-."

I extend my right hand and rub his head.
Ah, the critical strike of parental embarrassment. Headpats!

"How about now?"

"No, F-. Dad."
See. No need to be formal, kiddo.

I remove my hand. "See? That wasn't hard. Now, what could possibly have persuaded you to leave your younger siblings to their own devices."

He tenses slightly. "Lynne and Cassandra are looking after them."
Either one of them being a terrifying guardian. Both together are a goth-girl one-two punch.

He can't help being overprotective, he's the oldest.

"Yes-. Dad. Um. I wanted to ask you something… About… Us."

I nod slowly. "Us..?"
Which 'us', though? Father and son? The whole family? The Renegade's full empire?

"My blood siblings. About… Blood. Because we're.. vampires."

"You can ask me anything. I can always say 'no'."
Starting to get a little thirsty, eh?

He looks down for a moment, trying to organise his thoughts. "Do you think..? Are we..? Supposed to.. avoid..?" He sags a little. "Are we not allowed to drink blood?"

"I don't remember telling you not to drink blood."

"No, but… We don't.. feel the blood hunger any more, and… Sunset says that we're healthy… As far as she can tell."
Interesting. I wonder what bring this on? Curiosity about his heritages?

I nod, because… They are. If there was any signs that the alchemical concoction I dose them with to dim their instincts was harming them, then… I'd have to take a few ill-advised risks very quickly. So I keep a careful eye on all of their test results, changes in their behaviour… Anything like that.
Good plan. They're a very delicate confluence of genetics.

"But… Miss Gloria said-"

My head tilts us so that I can affix my eyes to her back. "Ah."
She is a succubus, right?, So seeing the kids not trying to tap into that power would be like a bird watching others refusing to fly...

"-that if we… Didn't, then we'd never get as strong as we could be. But you've spent a lot of time making it so we didn't need to, so I thought you didn't want us to."

"I don't want you to turn into a ravening beast, no. Do you want to drink blood?"
No worrying cravings, I hope? Or is this just a case of an equivalent to 'why do girls suddenly look so interesting to me?' that most teenage boys seem to experience at some point.

"I.. don't know? It's-." He hesitates again. "Did you know that Lynne's stronger than m-? She's stronger than us?"

New God pattered after me, versus… Honestly, Lynne's just lucky that her skin hasn't turned grey. "No, I didn't."
I suspect that that's only because she understands that grey skin isn't as attractive. Much like how in the Belgariad, the immortal male Sorcerers tend to become hoary old men, but the female one(s) retain a healthy motherly youthfulness. Because getting old would make them crones, and that's no fun.

"We found out when we helped with the setting up." He looks around. "She could carry more stuff than-. Than me. And she didn't get tired."

"I'm not totally surprised by that. New God Elites are fairly powerful."
Is that all this is? Feeling a little shown up buy a slip of a girl?

"And so I asked Miss Gloria how I could get stronger."

"And she pointed out that you don't do things that would fully empower either your demon or vampire sides."
...She would. But there are more paths to strength than indulging your worst nature.

"She-. Yes."

I regard him curiously. "And?"

"And she.. wasn't very polite about it."
I mean, she doesn't get paid for politeness. That's a bonus, really.

I could be annoyed about that, but I knew that she was a demon when I hired her. I just nod. "Something along the lines of… 'You'll always be weak if you refuse the power you were born to'?"

"… Sort of."
Except that the 'power he was born to' is rather self-centered and destructive, and he has this little thing called empathy.

A reasonable suggestion. Although indulging the other aspect might run into other moral objections.

"Oh."

"On Apokolips, if you don't seize every advantage you can to keep yourself safe, then you end up a slave if you're lucky. There are vampires who learn to function within human society despite drinking blood, and if that's the route you want to go down, then you have my support."
I expect things like blood bank withdrawals are a common thing. Albeit as a very tricky thing to arrange.

Pragmatic, if a little callous.

I guess that's one way to let the kids experiment safely...

"O.. kay. Should I.. stop taking the medicine?"

"Not… To begin with, I think. It may be that the feral hunger overtakes you only when you're starving, or it may be that that's your natural state. We won't know until you try, and I think we'd both rather err on the side of caution." He nods. "Do you want me to come along, or would that be awkward?"
Sort of like a man taking his newly-legal son out drinking, really.

"I'd.. like it if you came with me. Just.. in case something goes wrong."

I nod. "No problem. I'll set something up and then come and fetch you. Alright?"

He smiles faintly, and nods. "Yes. Thank you-. Father."
Just a fun old day out with the old man. And they can ease the other kids into it if it goes well...

The incubus thing is probably a bit more complicated - and embarrassing - than the usual 'birds and the bees' talk, I bet.

Well, a pleasant chat with Paul the succupire. And yes, that's why the Renegade wasn't using his name. I suppose it's only natural that the youngsters would start to explore their heritages as they grow up. Just imagine if one or more of the kids start to delve into their dual natures and find one or the other enjoyable? Still, with guidance, they can stay safe and perhaps become something heroic...

I nod, because… They are. If there was any signs that the alchemical concoction I dose them with to dim their instincts was harming them, then… I'd have to take a few ill-advised risks very quickly. So I keep a careful eye on all of their test results, changes in their behaviour… Anything like that.

I don't think Grayven has tried to use his original name since before he merged with the local Grayven. Does he know if he's now able to use the name, or has it just never occurred to him to try?

It might well be the latter, on the basis that even though he originally took the name basically as a joke, by this point, after all this time and everything that has happened (not least nomming the soul of the Original Flavour) he is Grayven.

I watch from a little way back as P-.

I wince as the world shimmers. Out of curiosity I asked Scott about the level of arcane force it would take to make a New God as strong as me feel faint, and apparently it would be easier to crack the moon in half.
From September 2023, which is well after the merge.
