With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

Hello there, Sailor Venus.

What Sailor Moon continuity makes the Sailor Guardians look like strip– on second though, never mind, I don't wanna know.

Also, if this is a Sailor Moon universe, wonder when it's set?

Edit: Also now I'm wondering if OL will pick up a traveling companion from here too.

"Crescent Beam!"

-strange-."

BWOOF!

A giant golden beam smacks into my armour, cracking it and sending my flying through the air and into a wrecked building! Construct armour! Stabilise! Construct shield!

I get my feet under me and brace just as the beam cuts out, and then… No immediate follow up. Unwise. Repair armour, construct armour and fly upwards-.

The instant I clear the ruin a giant… Golden glowing chain flies through the air towards me! I interpose my construct shield to block the initial strike, the drop down underneath it as it tried to wrap around me. Follow it back to the source-.

Why am I being attacked by a stripper?
I'm going to guess that Zoat isn't actually that familiar with Sailor Moon as a setting given his general dislike for dealing with hilariously broken characters.

Have you seen how short the skirts are?
I mean they are leotards, so it's more like they dress like figure skaters.

Really gotta wonder what's going on here, the Sailor Senshi wouldn't usually just straight-out attack someone when they aren't doing anything evil. Also since the Crescent Beam is an OG Anime only attack, we know this is the OG anime and not Crystal or God help Paul, the Manga.

The odd thing is Paul knows about Sailor Moon at least enough to make a costume for Artemis for Halloween. She complained about how short the skirt is and Paul acquiesed to her request for something to cover herself up, which he provided via bike shorts. So I'd assume he'd recognize one of the Sailor Senshi.

Ruins and wreckage surround us, broken buildings and shattered streets. Some partially surviving shop awnings show writing in Japanese, so… Japan. Further away I can see… One massively out of place skyscraper more than five times the height of the surrounding buildings, and… At least some intact buildings further away. No people immediately around us. No bullet casings or the residues of the sort of explosives that would be present if this was caused by conventional war…
So, a typical Tokyo scene after Godzilla visited. The super-skyscraper seems out of place even for a large Japanese city, though. I wonder how the background magical energy levels of the place look right now...

Ah… Update?

18th November 1995
17:59 GMT +9
So nearly twenty years back in time. This ain't the DC Universe he left. Perhaps one of his allies ended up here?

At the bottom of a gouge in the road I can see pipes and cables. One of the pipes has a drizzle of water sluggishly flowing from it, while the others… The gas pipe, electrical cable and telephone cable are all dead. I could take a look around with empathic vision and see if there are any people here, but…
No danger of gas explosions, at least.

This isn't the result of a firefight or bombing raid. This is the aftermath a superpower fight. And I don't want to-

"Fascinating." Lushun bends down and picks up a chunk of debris, staring at it intently.
First time seeing a 'modern' city, of course he's going to be interested in the materials.

-risk drawing attention until I know what happened.

"Not stone, not a clay brick…" He looks at me. "Do you know what this is made of?"
And if it's from the right place from a wall, likely got steel reinforcement too.

I take a look. "It's concrete."

"Concrete." He nods. "What's that?"
Concrete, for the curious. Note that ancient Rome had concrete over 2,000 years ago! I suppose in a world of magic, they could just use geourgy to shape stone structures rather than use 'lesser' methods.

"It's a mixture of cement, sand, gravel and water. Cement can be made in a variety of ways, but the simplest uses crushed limestone."

"Is this your world, then?"
Something like it, but I suspect he'd recognise if it was Earth Sixteen.

"No. This world is similar, but it's not the same." And Mazikeen doesn't have a Justice League communicator anyway. "Orange Lantern to Angelica Blaze, respond please."

Nothing. Lushun gradually pulls his eyes up from the gash in the street, looking at the wrecked buildings around us and then up-.
Possible that Mazikeen is here, then if he got no response.

"What happened to that moon?"

Oh no.
...Well, that's not a good sign.

It looks like its been… Blasted? The moon hasn't been fractured, but the surface looks more cratered that it should be and there's a halo of what I suspect to be scattered rock around in. What's the… Point of shooting up the near side of the moon?

"I don't know. It shouldn't look like that, if this world works in the same way as mine does. Is your magic working?"
Very good idea to make sure the mage hasn't functionally lost all his powers. Especially if he can't open another portal.

He holds out his left hand, and the shadow effect he got from the spell he nearly used on Sareth and Xana reappears. "It's… Different, but the ambient power is similar enough to what there was on Ashan for me to metabolise it. Of course, the Staff of the Netherworld may well be making that easier."
Almost certainly, I suspect. Its maker probably made it capable of converting local mana into something an Ashan-trained caster could use.

"Do you know any spells that increase your survivability?"

"A few. Hm." He raises his staff slightly as turquoise light flares around his body. After a moment it dims and coalesces into… What looks a good deal like construct armour. "Arcane Armour. It lasts until it's destroyed, unlike Endurance or Deflect Missile. And wouldn't attract the attention of those hostile to users of Light Magic."
Ah, the tried-and-true classic. Never underestimate that +4 Armour bonus to AC. 😅 EDIT: Yes, I know that's not what the HoM&MV version does, but it's easier to visualise the overall benefit: an increase of durability and protection.

I nod. "Sensible." I consider asking if he can disguise it with an illusion, but he's an elf wearing clothing appropriate to the Dark Elf kingdom. That wouldn't make him stand out less.

Check my own armour… It's in good condition.
Neither of them are exactly going to pass for an average citizen.

"Can you still detect her?"

"I… Could, but it seems to me that your rings are somewhat specific."

"How do you mean?"
It helps that OL has records of both Angelica's and Mazikeen's biometrics on record. If they're here and not arcanely shielded, he can find them.

"The magic of Ashan -of Asha and Urgash- is similar enough to the magic here that my spells still work. There are vast numbers of magicians of varying degrees of skill on Ashan, and I…" He looks around. "See little reason to assume that things are different here. If power is available then people will use it."
Ah, rightfully paranoid. Out of his element, in a whole other universe and feeling very vulnerable.

"So you think that people are more likely to be able to detect your magic than my ring scans?"

"A guess, true, but an educated one."
Better safe than sorry, certainly.

He has a point, except… If there's an alternate path to power, people might pick one over the other. Modern settings tend not to have all that much in the way of magic, but there's nothing here that I specifically recognise to tell me if I'm in a parallel that I already know about. A damaged moon should stick in my memory, but the only works of fiction I remember something like that happening in are Megas XLR (and Coop fixed it at the end of the episode), The Time Traveller (though that resulted in the moon being shattered), D.C. in the Legion of Superheroes era (thanks to the dominators shattering it), and… That's about it. Oh, and Dragonball, but they had multiple moons… I think? And that's not set on Earth.
Not multiple moons. Rather, Kami-sama replaces the Moon after Roshi blows it up with a Kamehameha when Goku goes kaiju-mode upon seeing it. ...Then his other half, Piccolo Jr. blew that one up to stop Goku's son doing the same thing... But that's a whole other universe that seems to work on comedy rules.

Anyway, I-. Ah. That would be a start.

"Orange Lantern to any Lanterns in range of my voice. Please acknowledge."
Even if that doesn't ping any of his own Corps, if there are any Lanterns in this universe, they just got a very strange call...

And I wait. I wait as Lushan looks around. "What species lives here, do you think?"

"I recognise the writing, so I assume that it's either mostly or exclusively human."
Japanese kanji, Katakana and hiragana, of course, and probably English text of varying quality of translations.

"Are humans common on other worlds?"

"Yes."
Or at least aliens that look oddly human, especially in the DC Universes.

"And elves?"

"Less so, and I'll warn you that 'Dark Elf' doesn't usually mean 'disputed a king's right to turn an elective monarchy into a hereditary monarchy'."
A great many are usually tarred as evil, often with good reason. Most I know of usually did rebel against other elven powers for various reasons.

I give my rings a moment longer.

"What about the undead?"
Naturally a necromancer type would want to know about that. 😄

"Certainly. My people's God of the Dead allows anyone who want to to just walk into the afterlife, and unless they do something stupid, walk out again. There are a group of transcendent ghost warriors liv-. Existing in a country in the northern part of my world. A few vampires around the place…"
The hostile ones usually get destroyed in short order, or become too strong to easily remove, though they often mellow out by then.

No, no one's responding. I-.

My rings blink for a moment, and… Are those glowing eyes-? End. End.
Oh, dear. It looks like someone noticed their arrival.

The eyes vanish.

"That's a little worrying. Alright, the largest landmark is that tower, but I'd like to see if we can find some normal people and get some idea about what's going on. A civilisation this organised shouldn't leave damage like this without at least making a start on fixing them."
Unless the situation that caused it is still ongoing or the civilisation has collapsed entirely. Though I suspect if it were, there'd be a lot more noise. And explosions...

"Given what I can see that they've built, it does seem a little-"

"Crescent Beam!"
Wait, I recognise that attack name!

...Okay, that's a lot higher-level than I remember from the 90's anime.

A giant golden beam smacks into my armour, cracking it and sending me flying through the air and into a wrecked building! Construct armour! Stabilise! Construct shield!

I get my feet under me and brace just as the beam cuts out, and then… No immediate follow up. Unwise. Repair armour, construct armour and fly upwards-.
A lot higher-level. If not for the calender year, I'd have thought this was the future era where exiled foes returned and attacked.

The instant I clear the ruin a giant… Golden glowing chain flies through the air towards me! I interpose my construct shield to block the initial strike, the drop down underneath it as it tried to wrap around me. Follow it back to the source-.

Why am I being attacked by a stripper?
Hey, now, unless she's wearing a very odd outfit, it's a leotard.

The Sailor Senshi uniform (of the Solar System, at least) Is very much a figure-skating-style outfit, no matter how short the skirt is. The Starlights wear a lot less, but they're also human-like aliens with different tastes. The worrying thing is where the two of them ended up, and which 'Sailor Moon' continuity they're in, as some aren't great places. Especially certain fan-made ones...

Giant odd tower suggests to me this is right around the endgame of the first arc, so honestly a coin flip if Kunzite and Zoisite are still in play or not.

If I'm right, or this is the original Sailor V manga, it's probably for the best lol, later on these girls become absurdly broken.

Not really, it's more like the ones from the Sailor Moon movies where the attacks could look "higher powered" because the budget got larger instead of relying on stock footage so much.

Crescent Beam was OG anime only, not the manga or Crystal. As for the tower, it's either the Dark Kingdom arc or the Black Moon Clan arc(pretty sure they had a giant crystal tower too).

Still doesn't explain why Venus is so trigger happy with an unknown who clearly doesn't look like either a member of the Dark Kingdom or the Black Moon Clan.

High level Sailor Scouts should be able to sense Orange Lanterns inherient evilness.

By which I mean his using an imbalanced negative emotion as a power source.

Re-reading, I'm going to suspect it's the latter, because-

My rings blink for a moment, and… Are those glowing eyes-?

...makes me think Wiseman.

(And November 1995 was when episodes of R, the second season, with the Black Moon Clan as villains, were first airing in the English dub. In the original November 18, 1995 would be the 26th episode of SuperS, the fourth season, but...the description of the episode does not match the described setting here at all.)

That would be Rei or maybe Usagi and Hotaru. Michiru would need her mirror and Ami the Mercury Computer. The others I can't recall having that ability in the anime.

Darn, I forgot about that. I would say that firstly, seeing an actual person wear the 'real' version of that getup is very different to seeing an animated character wearing it, or seeing one based on the animated version. Secondly, there are a lot of magic girl animes where they wear something like that. Thirdly, British school uniforms don't look like that so it really only exists in foreign television programs and as fetishwear. The Sailors would blush at what Diana or Black Canary wear while the SI barely notices it.
Ah, the tried-and-true classic. Never underestimate that +4 Armour bonus to AC.
No, that's the D&D spell of the same name. The Ashan version is a little different.

Paul should recognize a sailor senshi uniform so that is throwing me for a loop.

Maybe this is a fan made universe of moderate internet popularity and the senshi are fighting on the backfoot and losing and thus have their uniforms damaged enough to be considered strips of clothes?

I don't remember if Zoat is familiar enough with the absolute broken nature of the manga to make Paul land there (oh boy he would be absolutely fucked considering how early the senshi and their enemies start to get absolutely broken by his standards), so the Anime is a far more realistic prospect for the cross over event.

So if that's the only experience I have with the series, what other baseline information do I need to know?
Honestly, for all that it's an Abridged gag series, it...really gets the jist across pretty danged well.

(Well, aside from that, as I recall, the Sailor Guardians defeated Jadeite by throwing a jet airliner at him, something that series skipped over...)

If we are dealing with the Black Moon Clan arc, further details are that Usagi now has a mini-me who traveled back from the 30th Century after the BMC (the main Season 2 bad guys who are being pulled around by an absolute monster of an evil wizard) destroyed the utopian future the Senshi had built to seek help, with the BMC in tow who are now raising a ruckus in the present.

This AMV honestly is spot on for Wiseman.

Am i the only one who read craked moon and instanly thought; ONE PUNCH!!!?

The mini me has an ancient unicorn with a human male form trying to creepily romance her and she's even more underage than everyone else in the show

"Concrete." He nods. "What's that?"
I like to imagine that concrete does exist on Ashan and Lushun simply hasn't heard of it. Always gets a laugh out of me when something like that happens in an isekai.
