With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

Thank you, corrected.
It's really funny that he's sticking with the jokey pronunciation even in combat. It can't just be a mistake because the ring would translate, right?
The ring doesn't translate names unless he asks it to. That's why Lantern Koriand'r is Lantern Koriand'r and not Lantern Starfire.
I was wondering the same thing!
Probably the same reason why she didn't undo their deaths in canon, possibly combined with Metalia stopping her. Or maybe she can't because it's not series 2 yet.

Villains rarely think much about that sort of thing. Yes, let's destroy the world. You know, where you keep all your stuff. 😏

Being fair, Metallia is a demon that was born from the sun and wants to eat the Earth and everyone on it before, presumably, wandering off into space to do that to other worlds.

She doesn't have much in the way of "stuff" that she cares about.

It also corrupted his mind to the point he lost his common sense and ability to focus

He did get a lot of powers that allowed him to win or survive several confrontations that he otherwise wouldn't have.

And he is still capable of common sense and focusing.

Darvos was defeated by his student turning traitor.

Huh?

No, seriously, what the heck are you talking about?

I know I've often said that you don't actually read this story, but this is next level.

Devlos Ungol was a guy that was given armor that was similar to Anti-Monitor tech and Paul defeated him by himself.

Heck, in the previous chapter Karsta mentioned the new planet the Kryptonians would be on. That's Devlos's homeworld.

There was never any Darvos character in this story.

They do not, we know this because Jadite broke free in canon and didn't have any information that would matter in this circumstance
And are the people that they are going to drain Jadite?

Because just because one character didn't have any info that doesn't mean that others won't.

It also corrupted his mind to the point he lost his common sense and ability to focus.

Corrupted? More like destroyed and re-built from the ground-up.

Be careful, it's the internet. And rule34 exists.

The internet is like Goku, but instead of power levels, it's degeneracy. Any time you think the ceiling is reached, it finds a way to break through.

If the internet ever becomes fully sentient, I shudder to think what kind of personality it will develop from all the weird shit we've put on it over the years.

In Heroes, the Internet is a sentient being that always existed and just allowed humans to access it. How much of the content was made by it and how much by humans was unexplained. And now I'm wondering if there's that Paul in Heroes. Would he recharge every time there's a solar eclipse?

And are the people that they are going to drain Jadite?

Because just because one character didn't have any info that doesn't mean that others won't.
Minor correction on my part, it was Nephrite that turned not Jadite.

And yes, in this case it actually does, because the only thing to know was the location of where the Dark Kingdom was sealed away.

Except that doesn't matter anymore now since Metalia is already free.

Which makes me wonder, wouldn't Pluto have had a contingency for something like this? Also I'm fuzzy on the details but I think Saturn would have "activated' in some way by a world ending event like this. Would be funny if OL teams up with Pluto to do timey whimey stuff to bring Hypertime into the Sailor Moon universe to solve this.
Why would Pluto have a contingency? She's not a seer nor is she manipulating events to reach a desired outcome. That's all fanon. Her job is to guard the Door of Space and Time(which is a means of time travel only) and protect the Silver Millennium from extra-dimensional threats and from those who would reach it across time.

I crumble a hole in the wall, and a dozen youma turn and growl or hiss at me as C'est La Vie and I float in and land.

"Yes yes, very intimidating. Now show us to-"

Acid spat by a youma with serpentine characteristics splatters off my construct shield, earning-

"Crescent Beam!"

-her a moon-blast which sends her across the office space and into the window at the far side.

"-the organ grinder, if you please?"

There's a sort of nervous blankness around the remaining youma, as if none of them want to be either the first to attack or the first to comply.

C'est La Vie inclines her head slightly towards me. "That metaphor doesn't exist in Japanese."

I frown at her. "Obviously not, but ring translation usually-." I turn back to the crowd. "I wish to talk to the person in charge, please. This means that you can leave and fetch them."

"Oh, don't worry." A tall man in a lilac uniform strolls in from the direction of the lifts. "I did notice you making a hole in my building. Surprisingly bold of you, given-."

He gets a good look at my face, and pauses.

"I didn't realise that you could still talk."

"The advantage of not having a soul is that it can't be damaged. I've got a question for you."

He rolls his eyes. "Everyone out."

The various youma obey at once, heading out of the room by the closest doorways, while their 'Heavenly King' employer waits with arms folded across his chest.

"Do you know how hard it is to find youma still capable of coherent thought after their transformation?"

"No. Have you considered not transforming them?"

"That wouldn't solve anything." He looks at C'est La Vie. "Why is Sailor Venus with you? And still alive?"

Sailor V-?

Oooh. Sailor Venus. Sailor Mercury like the planet! Sailor Moon-. I… Suddenly wish I actually knew something about the series.

Moving swiftly on, I turn up my empathic vision and a translucent grey bubble shield flickers into existence around him, prompting him to raise his left eyebrow.

"Because no useful purpose is served by killing her."

"Queen Beryl-. Or I suppose I should say Queen Metalia, would probably reward you."

"With what?"

"Power? Status?"

"Power over what? Status where?"

His eyes narrow. "State your business."

"What does Metalia actually want?"

A glowing knife nails my construct armour directly in front of my forehead. Then he completes the throwing motion with his right arm.

"Alright. I'm here to convince you that there's no point or profit in destroying human civilisation and that you'd be better served by working against the queens."

His eyes narrow. "Dark energy regulation is a solvable problem."

"Does something about covering the world in dark energy suggest that Metalia is interested in regulating anything?" I gesture to the building around us. "How long do you think this will survive when she turns the remaining population of Japan into feral youma? Do you know how much effort maintaining a civilisation this complex takes? How many people? How-?"

"Yes. I do." He considers us for a moment. "Is that it, then? The two of you intend to have one last doomed fight with Queen Metalia? How romantic."

I glance at Sailor V, who avoids meeting my eyes. Didn't need to know that.

He smiles condescendingly. "I won't stop you, but I have no interest in throwing my life away."

"Alright then. I'll ask you a question I suspect you haven't been asked before."

"Yes?"

"What do you want? If everything went the way you want it to, what does your life look like? Are you living somewhere like-"

I turns and gesture to the hole I made, through which Japan is visible.

"-that, or are you living in a decaying apocalypse populated by demon zombies ruled over by a queen who thinks this is all good and proper?" I smile and he actually decides to think about it. "What makes you happy?"

"I…" He shakes his head. "Queen Beryl is…"

"Tell me: are you immune to dark energy yourself?"

"Of course." He gestures to himself with his right hand. "Do I look like I've become a youma?"

"Affected differently is not the same as immune. Look, you're clearly someone who reached a level of pre-eminence. What motivated you to become the man that you are?"

He smiles, but there's a degree of uncertainty to it. "That was a very long time ago."

"Then you're clearly not pressed for time."

"What are you trying to do?"

"Well, I thought that I'd talk you around by pointing out that your nominal boss is clearly acting against your interests. And either you were too worried about your own safety to resist -which would be fair enough- or your judgement was compromised in some way. Or you're fine with it, and it sounds like that isn't the case."

His eyes drop slightly. "I-. I don't-."

"I'm pretty sure that I can remove dark energy from a person or object. I think that's what the version of me you've met before did that got him into trouble. If you think that someone -perhaps an ally of the Guardians- is interfering with your thought processes, it's hardly unreasonable for you to want to be at your best for the Queen, is it?"

His eyes come up. "Just the dark energy?"

I raise my hands. "Just the dark energy. Feel free to call a friend in to keep a knife at my throat-."

He smiles as another man dressed in a similar uniform appears in a shower of petals just behind Sailor V. His comrade smirks as the petals transform into needles and hang in the air, prepared to strike. "You called?"

Sailor V prepares her chain, but I put my right hand on her arm to stop her. "No, that's fine."

I deactivate my construct armour and send my heavy armour into subspace before walking towards the closest needle, taking hold to it and moving it to my neck. It remains in place as I let go and the new Heavenly King stares at me in confusion.

"This isn't a trick. If I fail, my life is forfeit. You can hit me from here, can't you?"

He looks surprised, and then pleased. "I can. Good luck!"

What is it with Sailor Scouts having (usually) one-sided crushes on men who are too old for them? Is it like a tradition, or something?

Come to think of it, didn't the main heroine of Cardcaptor Sakura also initially have a crush on a boy who was way too old for her too? Is this a common occurence for Magical Girls?

I would say it's old male writers writing schlock for themselves but I think most of the seinen genre and magical girl writers are actually women so...I guess that fantasy isn't as one sided as I thought?

Maybe it IS schlock for those female authors, and they're attracted to men who are much older than themselves?

I wish I'd watched Sailor Moon (subbed?) instead of Negima as a boy. I'm not sure if I'd give up much of the other Funimation shows that introduced me to anime...

I had the impression that having crushes on older people was fairly common for teenagers in general.

Yes, that includes me. Even though I didn't recognize it at the time.

Fair enough. I mean, we do have the stereotype of teenagers hanging posters of hot celebrities that they'd be too young to date on their bedroom walls for a reason.

Hard to intimidate someone who's faced Titans and Gods without feeling a whit of fear. Compared to something like Oceanus, a few barking lunatics aren't much threat. No matter what weird powers they might have.

Acid spat by a youma with serpentine characteristics splatters off my construct shield, earning-

"Crescent Beam!"

-her a moon-blast which sends her across the office space and into the window at the far side.
Admittedly, elemental attacks like that probably have some measure of magic behind them, so constructs might be a little troubled.

"-the organ grinder, if you please?"

There's a sort of nervous blankness around the remaining youma, as if none of them want to be either the first to attack or the first to comply.
It's not a language issue, certainly, what with his Ring.

C'est La Vie inclines her head slightly towards me. "That metaphor doesn't exist in Japanese."

I frown at her. "Obviously not, but ring translation usually-." I turn back to the crowd. "I wish to talk to the person in charge, please. This means that you can leave and fetch them."
Surprised it didn't give a similar 'man behind the man' metaphor, then. Also amusing to see Minako getting a saying right. Then again, this is her 'locked in' mode. After the Dark Kingdom fell, she relaxed a lot.

"Oh, don't worry." A tall man in a lilac uniform strolls in from the direction of the lifts. "I did notice you making a hole in my building. Surprisingly bold of you, given-."

He gets a good look at me face, and pauses.
Ah, the mightiest of the Four Kings. And someone they could find to be a useful ally, given his abilities.

"I didn't realise that you could still talk."

"The advantage of not having a soul is that it can't be damaged. I've got a question for you."
Heh, I see he's made the mistake of assuming this is the local Paul too.

He rolls his eyes. "Everyone out."

The various youma obey at once, heading out of the room by the closest doorways, while their 'Heavenly King' employer waits with arms folded across his chest.
Like a pack retreating before a stronger predator. Fairly accurate analogy, I think.

"Do you know how hard it is to find youma still capable of coherent thought after their transformation?"

"No. Have you considered not transforming them?"
I'm pretty sure there were only a few such in canon. Tethys the water nymph, the DD Girls... Often fairly strong youma, too. Wonder if there's a correlation.

And light dawns! Though I don't think he ever called her by any name, at least in the bits we've seen. So she might well not have realised he got it wrong... Best if he doesn't mention it.

Moving swiftly on, I turn up my empathic vision and a translucent grey bubble shield flickers into existence around him, prompting him to raise his left eyebrow.

"Because no useful purpose is served by killing her."
Huh. A passive defence identifying the scan as a hostile action? That'll put his on guard.

"Queen Beryl-. Or I suppose I should say Queen Metalia, would probably reward you."

"With what?"
After all, when you have a Power Ring, there's not much anyone can offer you that you couldn't claim by yourself.

"Power? Status?"

"Power over what? Status where?"
What's the point of ruling in a land of ash and dust?

His eyes narrow. "State your business."

"What does Metalia actually want?"
Ah, yes. The billion-Yen question. What greater goal does all this advance her towards? I bet OL will be disappointed if he learns 'because she could' is the most likely reason.

He's fast, isn't he? And somehow, I get the feeling he hasn't really grasped the full extent of the problem here, though.

"Does something about covering the world in dark energy suggest that Metalia is interested in regulating anything?" I gesture to the building around us. "How long do you think this will survive when she turns the remaining population of Japan in feral youma? Do you know how much effort maintaining a civilisation this complex takes? How many people? How-?"
There are plenty of studies that predict how quickly modern structures would collapse without maintenance. And it is a very short time, relatively speaking. Mere decades.

"Yes. I do." He considers us for a moment. "Is that it, then? The two of you intend to have one last doomed fight with Queen Metalia? How romantic."

I glance at Sailor V, who avoids meeting my eyes. Didn't need to know that.
Seems to be a common theme amongst Sailor Senshi. Minako had a few crushes like that in her career. Sailor Moon is basically planning to marry a man several years her elder (At least once she gets past the 'he's an irritating pest' stage.) I always assumed Jupiter's 'old boyfriend' was an older teen...

He smiles condescendingly. "I won't stop you, but I have no interest in throwing my life away."

"Alright then. I'll ask you a question I suspect you haven't been asked before."
I wonder if Kunzite is feeling something's off here yet? The local Paul might well not have been quite so introspective.

"Yes?"

"What do you want? If everything went the way you want it to, what does your life look like? Are you living somewhere like-"
Besides living it with Zoicite, anyway. That much is a given.

I turns and gesture to the hole I made, through which Japan is visible.

"-that, or are you living in a decaying apocalypse populated by demon zombies ruled over by a queen who thinks this is all good and proper?" I smile and he actually decides to think about it. "What makes you happy?"
The halls of the Dark Kingdom's base definitely falls into the latter. Melted-looking cave walls, mostly...

"I…" He shakes his head. "Queen Beryl is…"

"Tell me: are you immune to dark energy yourself?"

"Of course." He gestures to himself with his right hand. "Do I look like I've become a youma?"
How would you know, if you've been carefully infused with it so precisely that you haven't noticed the changes?

"Affected differently is not the same as immune. Look, you're clearly someone who reached a level of pre-eminence. What motivated you to become the man that you are?"

He smiles, but there's a degree of uncertainty to it. "That was a very long time ago."
At least a thousand years, depending on continuity.

"Then you're clearly not pressed for time."

"What are you trying to do?"
Never run into a diplomancer before, eh? Someone who can literally talk you into anything given time...

"Well, I thought that I'd talk you around by pointing out that your nominal boss is clearly acting against your interests. And either you were too worried about your own safety to resist -which would be fair enough- or your judgement was compromised in some way. Or you're fine with it, and it sounds like that isn't the case."
Well, he probably wasn't thinking about it before, but now that you've brought it up...

And now you've got him wondering if the dark energy itself is affecting his mind, just as you planned.

His eyes come up. "Just the dark energy?"

I raise my hands. "Just the dark energy. Feel free to call a friend in to keep a knife at my throat-."
Not that that's much of a threat to OL, really. But if they think it is, all the better.

Ah, the blonde bastard. Seriously, unless he was a mean one before the change, the darkness really made him nasty.

"I can. Good luck!"
And he's totally looking forwards to shedding blood. I expect even if OL does manage to succeed, Zoicite might stab him a little before Kunzite can stop him...

I suppose when you're facing down a sadist, putting yourself at his mercy is a way to make him feel safe. It is a smart move to turn the remaining Kings, since they could probably command the youma against the Queens. Which will be helpful, since Beryl almost certainly has Endymion in her sway by this point... And they'll have to go through them to get to Metalia.

Come to think of it, didn't the main heroine of Cardcaptor Sakura also initially have a crush on a boy who was way too old for her too? Is this a common occurence for Magical Girls?
The Sailor Scouts are a lot older then their biological age would suggest because of reincarnation.
