With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

These random sidestories Zoat makes to pontificate his politics are the worst parts of these threads.
Um. Much as I'd like to be able to claim credit for the entirety Interplay Production's Fallout, I can't. So it's not really my politics?
Zoat, the link in the spoiler box for this chapter does not work.
Thank you, corrected.
What?

I mean, I watched the video, but I'd still got no idea.
I think some of the stuff referenced in this chapter is from the Enclave sub-mod, but I could be wrong about that.
Sort of. Arch Dornan is from Fallout 2, and the stuff about the Sierra Army Depot was mentioned in the bit with Douglas Granite.

What?

I mean, I watched the video, but I'd still got no idea.

It's a (by now mostly dead) meme about a comment from a YouTube video showing off the final moments of Club Penguin that was in butchered English. The only reason I even thought about it was because I'm zoomer filth and my brain is hardwired to see a meme before anything else. Also because I've never played Fallout 2 .

I take a careful look at the grizzled prisoner opposite me as he glowers through the bullet-resistant glass. Through the grill in the bottom I can hear him quietly wheezing, a result of the injuries he sustained when the left side of his power armour's torso was hit by an anti-tank rifle, bending it inwards to crush his ribs. The rest of the armour was melted near-solid; they had to get him out with drills and chisels, and the NCR army only bothered doing that because they thought that he might have actionable intelligence.
Ah, back to 'Fallout: Old World Blues' Earth, and the adventures of 'Krono' Paul, he of the mighty mental powers and the dead Ring. Still trying to rebuild civilisation out of the ashes, strategy game style. And having impressive success! ...Wonder how his dating gameshow career went?

And that's not his only injury. I can see a dozen small scars and burns earned through a life in the wastelands. Three years in the NCR's care with minimal medical aid and surrounded by violent criminals hasn't exactly been easy.

I mean, my goodness. Forty years since Navarro. And he wasn't exactly young when it happened.
Grizzled, nothing! This man is etched out of pure steel, from the sound of it.

"How the heck are you still alive?"

The skin around his eyes tightens as he moves his glare from 'hostile' to 'openly contemptuous'.
...And I can't help but picture Clint Eastwood. Goddammit, yes. x3

"I AM ALIVE BECAUSE I DO NOT HAVE WEAK MUTANT BLOOD IN MY VEINS! I HAVE PURE AMERICAN VINEGAR!"

He looks like he wants to keep shouting, but there's a tremor in his chest and he has to brace himself to avoid showing weakness.
...Or possibly a young R. Lee Ermey? Good lord, the man sounds like a drill sergeant.

Sergeant Arch Dornan is the longest serving surviving member of Enclave personnel still in NCR custody. He was captured after the NCR/Vault City stormed the Sierra Army Depot and he was moved here once they realised who he was. This is the man who led the evacuation of Navarro once the command post was destroyed by Brotherhood Paladins, and who organised the remaining free Enclave units in California into a cohesive force.

And then he sided with Doctor Anderson in their election and it was all downhill from there. New Reno may never recover.
I'm guessing things did not go well. Still, I suppose he has his uses...

"Well, when you're immune to disease and radiation and can punch out a brahmin, it's time to stop pretending you're not a mutant. FEV's powerful stuff."

"THAT IS US GOVERNMENT PROPERTY, MUTIE!"
What US Government? In case you haven't noticed, soldier, America lost. The only reason they didn't get conquered by the enemy was the enemy lost too. ...Mutually Assured Destruction, folks. It's a hell of a drug.

"The US government never finished it. I would be happy to share my expertise, were the US government a going concern."

"THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IS NOT DEAD SO LONG AS ONE LOYAL SOLDIER REMAINS! AND I AM NOT YET DEAD!"
...Are you sure about that? Because people have a habit of not staying dead out here.

"Sergeant, how would you like to get out of prison while still alive?"

No reply to that, buddy?

He continues glowering at me for a few moments.

"I'm listening."
Gee, not so stand-offish all of a sudden, are we? :p

"The NCR is rather pleased with me at the moment. I've been helping them make friends, dealing with a few potential conflicts and we recently killed a giant super mutant god. Caesar's next on the chopping block and then that's basically it. The territory of the former United States will be home to peaceable successor states, several of which conform to the borders of pre-War states. Texas is back, and Oklahoma, and Colorado, and the Republic of the Rio Grande."

"Get to the point, mutie."
Well, for a start, he's telling you things have changed out there. Oh, not War, that never changes. But the aftermath? Change all the way.

"The Enclave claimed to be the legitimate government of the United States, using emergency continuity laws to pass authority from one leader to another. But the people of the wasteland don't recognise their authority, not only because the Enclave tried to kill them all with FEV, but because they didn't vote for them. America is supposed to be a democracy, and the constitution makes it clear that you do need to have federal elections every few years. You tried fighting the entire wasteland twice, and it didn't work."

I lean forwards slightly.
See, when you use loopholes like that, people start to think you're empire-building. That's what bit Julius Ceaser in the arse way back when...

"Have you considered more covert means?"

"What the hell do you mean by that?"
Well, when punching someone in the face doesn't work, maybe you should try shouting 'what's that!' and pointing behind them... :p But maybe that tactic's a little advanced for you.

"I believe that the best way to ensure ongoing peace in North America is to re-establish the United States. For a while I've been picking up Enclave survivors and shipping them off to Iowa. Governor Autumn really just controls a single town and some farmland at the moment, but there are a lot of hard-working and patriotic Americans there who'd be glad to see you, and the other Enclave personnel in NCR custody."

"Iowa."
What's so bad about it? James Tiberius Kirk came from there, you know! And are you less of a man than the manliest Starfleet captain ever?

"Not sure what Iowa did to piss the Chinese off, but they nuked it pretty hard during the War. Now, the radiation forms a barrier around the area their Garden of Eden Creation Kit purified. Point is, if I talk the reformed states into reforming the United States, that will be one Governor, two Senators and however many congressional representatives who were members of the Enclave."

"YOU EXPECT ME TO SIGN UP TO A GOVERNMENT OF THE MUTANTS BY THE MUTANTS FOR THE MUTANTS?! I WOULD RATHER ROT IN HELL!"
Given that Iowa is smack-dab in the 'breadbasket of the country', the Chinese probably figured it would render all the farmland there unusable, forcing the Americans into a famine... Also, who isn't a Mutant, by your definition, fella?

"A person who is born to either naturalised or natural-born American citizens is an American citizen. That means that virtually everyone you dismiss as 'mutants' is in fact an American citizen. They may be mutants as well, but they are legally American citizens. The Constitution puts some fairly strong restrictions on the way a legitimate government can treat its citizens, and the fact that the Enclave refuses to recognise that is another rather serious strike against it. Not… A serious strike as in 'something that makes people dislike it', I mean a serious strike against its claim to be the legitimate government when it fails to respect the very laws which give it power."
Oof. Don't try to out-argue a rules lawyer, soldier-boy.

I shrug.

"I mean, if the government doesn't follow the law, why should anyone else?"
...Thank goodness he's talking about a fictional version of the not-so-United States...

"MUTANTS ARE NOT CITIZENS OF MY COUNTRY!"

"The Constitution makes no provision for depriving a person of their citizenship on the grounds of genetic alteration. You don't have to like us, but you can't deprive us of our rights. But that's rather beside the point. The point is; do you want to see any kind of America restored and then work to make it more like what you think it should be, or do you want to die here?"
...Personally, I would vote for not dying. But I am not this guy.

I could give his mind a little nudge, but… That sort of thing tends not to stick. If I drop him on Autumn and Granite like that he'd probably end up as the nucleus of a hard-core Purist movement that will create even more trouble for me later on. And cost me virtually all of my credit with the NCR. No, this does need to be something he decides for himself, and I can feel his thoughts churning.
The joy of being a mind-reader. That sweet natural bonus to all social skill checks. :p

As far as he's concerned, Iowa, Nevada, California, it makes no difference. He'll gladly fight and die for the Enclave, completely convinced of the legitimacy of his cause. Some Enclave soldiers I've met weren't convinced that releasing the FEV Plague was the right thing to do at the time, and the ones like Granite who spent time since the Fall of Navarro living around wastelanders are now firmly convinced that it was wrong. Others like Dornan have drunk all of the Kool-Aid.

One nation, under the Enclave, with mindless obedience for all.
I doubt they could even afford the name-brand these days. Probably used some crappy knock-off like Flava-Aid. Gives the mind-control drugs an extra Zing!, you know?

But Dornon needs someone else to set the agenda. His insistence that he's not an officer is something he feels deeply. He isn't comfortable making policy decisions himself. And he knows Granite and knew Autumn Senior. They are part of the group of people he's used to taking orders from.

"What else?"
Ah, so you're leaning on his willingness to look to someone else to do all his thinking for him. Such a good soldier...

"You and all Enclave personnel remaining in NCR custody would be loaded into trucks and put on the road with a small escort of my people. Any who don't take this deal will be 'killed attempting to escape', which is one of the reasons why I hope you'll convince as many of your fellows as you can to accept it. Governor Autumn already knows that some people will be coming, and they've made the arrangements to receive you. I believe that you will technically become a member of the Iowa National Guard, though in practice your responsibilities will remain the same. Or you… Could retire. You've served with distinction for a very long time-."
A thousand-kilometer-plus drive across blasted wastelands, packed with hostile raiders and wild beasts? I think you've got him hooked.

"I've failed my country twice, mutie. Do you have any idea what that's like?"

"Restoring Britain has somewhat fallen down my schedule, but I'll get there eventually."
Assuming anything of it still exists. The British Isles are not that large, and even a couple of Nukes would leave it devastated... Still, there's always SCIENCE! to be applied.

"I can't make this decision myself. But if I'm alive, I can always come back and kill you later."

I smile broadly. "That's the spirit. You'll tell the others?"
I can't imagine they'll vote against it...

He nods, grudgingly. "Get the guards out of the way for half an hour. We'll be having a free and frank exchange of views."

I nod. "Good to hear it. I'll see you with the trucks tomorrow."
...Though there might be some sore heads in their future.

One more step in Krono's grand plan to drag the world out of barbarism by the scruff of the neck accomplished, then? Though I suspect he's made lots of little plans that come together just right regardless of what happens. On the upside, it's good to see he survived the little 'Perfect Match' drama we last saw him involved in. Wonder if we'll find out who won sometime?

But Dornon needs someone else to set the agenda.
But Dornan needs someone else to set the agenda.

Thank you, corrected.

Thing is... I'm not sure that anyone would have nuked Britain. Particularly not with the cobalt-jacketed monstrosities that the Americans and Chinese were throwing at each other. What would have been the point? The Resource Wars were about resources, and Britain just wasn't either rich enough to be worth taking or strong enough to need to be destroyed.

That... is likely no one who isn't a upstanding, pure member of The Enclave. IIRC there were at least some moderates who said that so long as you looked like a "normal" Human you were fine, but the general stance was... a bit less forgiving. Baring groups like The Remnants who have been out of The Enclave longer than they were in.

We know thanks to Allistair Tenpenny that The Isles survived, and are actually advanced enough to send people across The Atlantic, even if it's likely to be grossly expensive. There isn't really much info beyond that to my knowledge, though large portions of the fanbase suspect that large areas of the globe were, relative to The US and China, left mostly unscathed but still collapsed due to a lack of resources and the nuking they probably also got.

Not sure how true that is in OBW though given the changes it makes to the lore.

Edit:There is a Swiss Ghoul though.

I needed that reminder! Have a link, everyone. It looks like the game ended without a nuke, somehow. I hope someone is putting those satellite-guided bondage missiles to good use.

Sorry, what was politics here?

That's still Katherine Janeway and you all know it

Britain had nukes themselves, no? That would have made then targets.

I disagree. Pointless complaints are the worst part. Reality is Zoat ain't going to change. A sensible person would either stop reading OR accept Zoat's story with all it's faults.

I'd argue that a sensible person would not start with the position that Zoat's politics have influenced the canon Fallout lore, but each to his own.

So two things:

NCR! NCR! NCR!

Also it goes Sisko, Pike, Archer, Kirk, Janeway, Picard and Burnham.

Yes I'm biased. Picard was tied with Kirk in my eyes before this nonsense with the Picard series.

They have the Brits on it, the Americans and Chinse would know that if they left them alone they'd take over and they were kinda trying to win.

That's a fair point, plus the more simple out of story explanation being if other nations hadn't been caught in the exchange, where have they been in the last 200 years? Also just saying they all got hot ties up the number of writing loose ends I suppose.

As an aside, the story doc for the proposed (but not picked up and thoroughly non-canon) Fallout Extreme would have had the player and party go to China to stop a second nuclear bombardment.

Even the HOI IV Old World Blues mod canon (constantly expanding as it is) has been pretty firm about not crossing the Atlantic or Pacific, though they went as far South as Honduras all with custom content. Plus I think lore wise for that, South America is composed of multiple raider nations with Honduras acting as a barrier against them.

[Briefly meditates upon Rule 8]

Perhaps. I do not believe that the Fallout background goes into the armaments of countries outside of the China/America conflict. However, the Trident system that the UK bought in 1980 was US made, and... There's no obvious source for a replacement.
They have the Brits on it, the Americans and Chinese would know that if they left them alone they'd take over and they were kinda trying to win.
But how would they win?

The American revolution in atomic batteries happened after the US went into isolation and sat out of the majority of the Resource Wars. Britain wouldn't have them and also wouldn't have any oil because for some reason the Fallout world never discovered thermal depolymerization. Shout out to Psyckosama and their Fallout story for that one. As a result, Britain might have wanted to conquer the world, but they... Couldn't. It's not even clear how they could maintain an industrial society. They'd be stuck using solar, tidal and wind power and batteries, and that's not an easy logistics train to manage.

I think the only confirmed thing that has ever been said about Britain is that it's worse off than North America. At the very least Allistair Tenpenny fled Britain as a refugee to seek a better life, ending up in the Capital Wasteland and setting up Tenpenny Tower.

The nations of Europe turned on one another, and more than one was nuclear armed. They also already showed a willingness to use them given that they nuked the Middle East previously. That and I think a few nations basically have policies of "fuck everyone" when it comes to all out nuclear warfare.

Also, given this is the OWB mod, there might be more Enclave aligned areas than one anticipates. The Courier doesn't exist in that mod, and I think there are plans for it to be the same deal for the Lone Wanderer. The mod's start date is a little bit before the events of Fallout 3, so Autumn's Enclave might have come out on top there. (Assuming the Autumn in Iowa isn't meant to be the Fallout 3 Autumn.)

Even if it didn't, the major power in the American Midwest is the Chicago Enclave. From what I've seen, they started dominating the region when the arrival of the Midwestern Brotherhood prompted them to reveal themselves by either capturing or destroying the Brotherhood's HQ pretty much right after their arrival. So the Midwestern Brotherhood never got the opportunity to become a powerhouse and is considered to be "on the ropes".

Though if Kronos is dicking around in Iowa he should have encountered them since Iowa neighbors Illinois.

I'm not sure that I'd count Bethesda Alistair Tenpenny as a reliable source.

No, the Courier does exist. Once New Vegas gets an intelligence agency, one of the potential recruits is The Courier who is level 50. For reference, normal highly experienced agents might be level 8. Also, if you take Hoover Dam as the Reformist Enclave you gets a pop-up about the American flag hanging from the dam, and how American troops were aided by 'a courier'.
The mod's start date is a little bit before the events of Fallout 3, so Autumn's Enclave might have come out on top there. (Assuming the Autumn in Iowa isn't meant to be the Fallout 3 Autumn.)
Yes, it's the former colonel, who was allowed to leave with his surviving soldiers after the project purity garrison was defeated.

Since they're not actually in the mod yet I'm ignoring them.

(I'm a first time commenter for this story.)

*Fallout Sidestory*

The thought of the United States reforming itself after the apocalypse, spreading sea to shining sea but this time from the Pacific to the Atlantic, is admirable though this will be a long, arduous process.

Even with advanced technology like the GECKs and with help from the Enclave, it would probably take even longer for a new United States to spread through the continent as the old US did.

Given how the people of the world were able to survive despite the hardship they've endured for the last two centuries, whatever emerges from the ashes would be more able to face the dangers found throughout space.

*Hephaestean*

I wonder if some people will suspect that Paul revitalizing the Olympian pantheon leading to an expansion of Hellenism would be partially out of spite given that Heaven had him killed once.

I'm honestly worried at what Grayven in the alternate timeline would do if he was in a similar situation that pits him against Zeus given that we know that he can no-sell Zeus's lightning.

A conflict between a New God and an Old God is the sort of thing that could spiral into a larger conflict.

*Grayven story*

I wonder if there will be an attempt to establish formal diplomatic relations between the nations of Earth and Wilson given that they are effectively closer to each other than Earth is to Mars thanks to the portal.

Princess Luna did make a good first impression, Wilson is a very magically active planet which opens a lot of opportunities, and neither side has any territorial claim over the other.

The only questions here is whether it's in Wilson's best interest to open relations given that their various nations are severely underdeveloped compared to those of Earth, they could be overwhelmed or negatively influenced by Earth nations, and Earth does have a supervillain problem.

Wilson does have supervillains but they don't threaten the planet nearly as often as they do on Earth.

*In General*

Holy hell, it took me like two months of on-and-off reading but I finally managed to get caught up back from the beginning.

I remember seeing this story (on another forum) around four or five years ago but was never able to read it through until now.

There were times I got confused between POVs we were following and what timeline / reality we were in but it eventually works itself out with context and emotional color codes.

I was beginning to think that Paul and Jade's relationship was slowly fading into the background or that Jade was being written out but then you brought it around and let them spend time together while (attempting) to take time off from working which I liked.

It's been great to see how much this story has grown and it'll be great to see how it developes from here.

He can't fully no-sell his lightning.

He was able to endure it due to the armour he was wearing, but it was a single bolt, so a sustained attack may actually do some damage.

Given Grayven is (Technically) Suzerain of earth they kinda already have.

soo. any bet of "how many years" befeore we get a "alternate paul" in the universes of "star wars", "star trek","transformers", dragonball, or some other anime? because sinse he got "isekaid" in 2012, the number of universes he would recognise is getting smaller. (at least CURRENT pop culture Franchises).. and honestly the idea of "Paul talking to Q from star trek" or "the ones from star wars" sound fun.

also like a previous comment said, WHY IS HERA NOT INVOLVED IN THE HADES/PERSEPHONE SITUATION?, kinda her area of expertise

Paul talking to Q from Star Trek would be like.

Q: "No cheating."

*Snaps fingers making Paul's Orange Ring disappear.*

Paul fixing the security on Star Fleet vessals would be great. But I think a key thing is that each Paulternate either needs a power source for their ring or use the ring to gaib some power. Star Trek doesnt really have that. Unless he could charge from a warp core or something.

Although frankly I am surprised we havent had a Babylon 5 Paul yet. He could alter himself to become a P12 telepath or even a telekinetic.

Wait. He wouldnt have his metaknowledge though as each Paul loses their specific franchise while being aware of the wider stuff. So Saul basically knows nothing. Whereas Red Paul still has wider DC. I guess for Star Trek he could be aware of broader stuff while foegetting the specific show's events. But Babylon 5 would be harder.

No elemental plane of avarice in Babylon 5, so his ring would be pretty useless.

Also the First One's wouldn't put up with his shit... So it would be a super short insert even if his ring worked there...
