With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

I'm wondering what he got from the Controller that now he's so confident possibly taking on a Viltrumite, though. He did provide a heck of a sample and Jevek seems to not be trying to short change any of these Lanterns, so whatever Matthew acquired should be good

Maybe a Lantern.

Though he's still not confident in his ability to actually stand up to a Viltrumite.

Very much his type.
Thinking on it the only SIs who didn't hook up with a 'bad girl' of some description are Krono, who got his wife assigned to him by a glorified dating App, and Lord Protector who picked the sensible administrator and widower Khoah.

There's also the Green Lantern version that has the ring Alan Scott used in the Stargirl TV show universe.

He's dating Alan's daughter, Jade, who is a superhero.

(I noticed that Matthew isn't doing the thing that some of his alternates do where he thinks of costumed people by their "real" names

He may not know Invincibles name.

So does Anissa just not k ow anything about childbirth etc?

Also, no mention of the potential of super strong vagina muscles crushing the child?

Whatever is going on with VIltrumites it seems that man of steel woman of kleenex (and vice versa) isn't a problem given that they make a habbit of reproducing with weaker races.

This didn't read to me as someone who was confident. I read it as someone who was cautiously feeling things out in as inoffensively disarming a way as he can to get a better idea of what strategy would best serve his goals.

What I mean is that, this is the guy that is reasonably scared of Invincible suddenly turning hostile on him, that reasonably pointed out his lack of experience in fighting or Lanterning in general. Now, he's not thinking about the danger of fighting a Viltrumite, he's considering the danger of what happens if he demonstrates that he can fight at their level or higher, he's considering what could happen if he inadvertantly defeats the Viltrumite.

That seems like confidence in his current Lantern abilities, in a guy that I would say didn't think himself capable of defeating a Viltrumite before. Just saying.

Maybe that could be a conversation in an Eros episode.

Uh, no kink-shaming but... did you just propose an mpreg situation?

Kinks aside, the biggest loss in this alternate universe is that the Mauler Twins and Robot are most certainly dead. With those three, Matthew would have definitely cracked the secret to Viltrumite bodies and hybridization.

Really unclear if Robot is actually dead or in hiding, given that his whole deal was to convince everyone that he was an artificial intelligence robot when the robot body was actually being operated remotely by a supergenius. I see no reason he would have brought the rest of the Resistance cell to the location of his real body, and Invincible and Omniman had no idea the robot body was a facade.

And of course, with the Maulers you never know if there's not another copy lurking out there.

If you watched the video, Omni-Man destroyed the robot body and then killed... Whatever his name is, because he was building a new gun right next to them.

Just to explain, I only read the comic and not the animated series, so maybe it is different in the animated series, but....

I don't know what video you mean (I just checked the story posts and didn't see anything but an Amber hatefest video), but if the video was of what it looks like for "evil Invincible" to be killing everyone then if it shows a guy standing out in the open building a gun, that doesn't seem likely to have been Robot either. The (never given a name) supergenius behind Robot has massive bodily deformities and has to live permanently in a life support tank. That's why he uses a robot drone. Later in the comic series he clones a new body for himself and use Mauler twin technology to put a copy of his mind in it (letting his original self die). But at this point in the timeline, if Invincible didn't bust open a life support tank and murder a deformed dwarf incapable of moving his own body, it seems likely that the guy building the gun wasn't the man behind Robot either. (Some poor schmuck he was using as a decoy maybe? Robot is ruthless enough,)

I mean, maybe in this version of the universe Robot wasn't super deformed, but if it serves your narrative purposes to have the genius still lurking out there in his hidden pod, it would be super plausible.

Here is the video clip showing AU Omni-Man killing Robot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfFyGa303S0

This AU has Robot no longer maintain his deception as he is piloting an exoframe with an open pod containing his freakish body in life-support. Omni-Man easily dispatches a drone Robot but is is shot by the real Robot with a beam from their last hope super-gun. The beampushes Omni-Man back but no damage is visible on Omni-Man when he flies out of the rubble. Robot has his exoframe destroyed and is helpless against Omni-Man. He gives a heroic defiance line of "Someday You Too Will" only for Omni-Man to mock it with a casual quip and fly off while Robot dies in a breached life-support pod.

A writer could easily have Robot live thanks to some hidden emergency gear capable of repairing his life-support pod or some resistance members who weren't there to be killed investigating in time to save his life. This doesn't seem like the intention of the writers as Robot's final lines and the vast visual we have of him emphasize the theme of a hero dying a tragic death.

A key point is that even if Robot is alive it still won't change anything for this version of Paul as his last hope super gun was almost completely ineffective after a direct hit with several seconds of exposure to the beam. Duplicating this technology with the Orange Ring would likely still not be enough to secure a victory against a single Viltrumite let alone the entire army (whether this is the vast hordes Paul would think they have as a mature space society or the 50+ they have in reality) that would be dispatched against Earth if they somehow manage to assassinate Omni-Man and Invincible.

Robot is a comic book super-genius but the somewhat more realistic nature of the Invincible Universe means his demonstrated feats are far below that of his counterparts in Marvel. Think the Uni-Beam and the Iron Legion rather than the Ultimate Nullifier or Time Travel. He can't be expected to pull out a Deus Ex Machina that can let Earth independently hold off the spaceships of an alien Empire or a small warband of Viltrumites.

Anissa's smile fades slightly in favour of a look of curiosity as she accelerates towards the Viltrumite ship and I manage to keep up with her. Viltrumites can fly faster than light under their own power, though she's not doing that at the moment. They don't use parallel universes with different physical laws, they don't bend spacetime to get around the infinite energy requirement by technically not going faster than light, they don't transform themselves into exotic matter…

More exotic than they are anyway.

As far as I can tell from the records I've been given access to and my own observations, they just don't experience inertia. The built-in speed limit that everyone else has to deal with just doesn't affect them. I'm half-wondering if that's because it's too high-concept to instinctively grasp and so they can fly that fast because they don't know that they shouldn't be able to.

I -on the other hand- do experience inertia. If she starts accelerating seriously I'll have to bend space or do the semi-teleport thing where I become orange light. I'm not… Sure if Invincible or Omniman know I can do that, so it would probably be better not to reveal it if I don't have to. But winning Anissa over probably takes priority, so if I can do that by flying fast then… Great.

"What are the-" That actually gets me a frown. "-conditions? Am I allowed-?"

"How is he talking to me?"

"Universal translator. It doesn't need the spoken-." I come to a halt as she appears right in front of me. "Spoken word. A certain degree of intent is all that's required. With most people I'd have to make an effort-" Meaning extend my environmental shield over them. "-but I've noticed that viltrumites-" Invincible. "-are easier to interact with."

"It's not telepathy."

"No. If I could read minds then… I'd be in a very different position. With most humans I can read patterns of brain activity, but that doesn't work on viltrumites at all."

She stares at me intensely for a few moments, perhaps trying to work out exactly where the cut-off for 'communication' is. Then she turns and accelerates fast towards the ship's open hangar.

I head after her at maximum space speed. Enough to be noticeable, not enough to trigger a response. I hope.

The aliens inside the hangar briefly glance around as Anissa flies in. I have no idea what species they are, though as far as I can tell they have four arms and no legs. If the ship has artificial gravity then they've turned it off, and the aliens are moving cargo and moving around by grasping rungs with their larger arms and performing fine object manipulation with their smaller arms. Artificial or arboreal, I wonder?

Anissa opens a wall-mounted locker and pulls out a headset and air mask which she then puts on.

"Vidor, come to the hangar. I've got a sparring partner for you."

Listen in.

"Is it Nowl-Ahn's son? I've been wondering whether he takes after his father more than his mother."

"My… Mate."

"Oh." The interior airlock cycles and a blond viltrumite man floats out, hands by his sides and fists clenched. In addition to the masculine version of Anissa's clothes, he's also wearing communications gear and goggles. He's looking at Anissa, and doesn't bother looking at anyone else. Including me, and I'm glowing orange. "Is he supposed to be some sort of warrior?"

"He builds things. I need to know how weak he is."

Now he looks at me. "It's Nowl-Ahn's planet and the Regent's order. Is this approved?"

"Apparently, this planet uses synthetic reproduction technology. I can follow the Regent's order as long as his scrotum remains intact." Vidor raises an eyebrow at her. "Nowl-Ahn wants him to stay alive. Anything else is acceptable."

It's… True that I can heal anything else. Implanting my ring in my skull looks like it was a better and better plan every day.

"You're being wasted, Anissa. You should have chosen to mate with a viltrumite; they wouldn't have selected you for this if you had."

Track and prepare to teleport.

"I'm a warrior, not a breeding sow." Vidor raises his eyebrows. "Say anything else and you will fight me instead."

Vidor shrugs, then turns and floats towards me. I raise my right hand. "My orders don't allow me to take actions that could damage the Earth. Do you have a preferred location in mind, or should I select one?"

"It makes no difference to me." He narrows his eyes slightly. "I'm curious why Nowl-Ahn gives you his attention."

I nod and fly out of the ship, heading for… Venus, yes, that's probably safest. Vidor takes after me, making a point of flying just behind me. Yes, he can fly faster than me like this. Worth knowing, but not exactly surprising. Anissa follows from further back, keeping us in viewing range without risking losing track if we start moving at viltrumite speeds.

According to my alter-egos, a Lantern with a system to fight in should never lose to a melee specialist. Viltrumites don't even have the option kryptonians have of using heat vision if forced to fight at range. Though kryptonians can't fly faster than light at will. But… They don't have faster than light senses whereas I do.

"Is this as fast as you can go?"

"I doubt that you respect me, but please don't assume that I'm quite stupid enough to share tactical information with an opponent."

"I really don't understand why we're leaving your males alive. Using the females for breeding makes a degree of sense, since Maah-Akh has proven himself competent. But what possible purpose could you serve?"

"I don't know. If you're asking me to guess, it's a combination of human males making up the vast majority of Earth's labour force and the Viltrumite Empire's lack of the infrastructure to support the useful parts of Earth society in our absence. You're right about using female viltrumites in this way, though. Adding human males to the breeding pool doesn't increase the number of children female viltrumites can have."

"Hm." He sounds approving. "Have you spoken of this to Nowl-Ahn?"

Monitor.

"No, it's not my place. The only reason I could think of was there being some kind of genetic bottleneck which necessitated an injection of fresh genetic material, in which case encouraging female outbreeding would make sense."

Yes. His face hardens. Something's… Happened. Were the survivors of the Great Purge all related? Have they created a problem using genetic engineering, making themselves stronger but more similar to one another? I don't know, and I probably shouldn't push in case they decide that I need to have a 'training accident'.

And there's Venus. Viltrumite eyes are good, but I can see him wherever he goes. Dust clouds and coloured gas will only help me, and the atmosphere might do him some harm. I could ask him, but… No.

I descend through the atmosphere, selecting a reasonably level plane as the starting point. Automate dodging, prepare needles and… Scan the surroundings in detail. And that's it for now.

I land on the ground and wait for-.

Vidor slams into the ground a short distance away, creating a mild earthquake in what I assume is an attempt to intimidate me. He looks at me in a cold and calculating way.

"Ready?"

"Y-."

And he's gone and I've moved.

The she turns and accelerates fast
'The' should be 'Then'

I assumed Matthew wasn't one of the versions of Paul kidnapped by Krona. Was I mistaken?

There's a lot of fictional ways to get around the lightspeed barrier of infinite energy. In the Viltrumite's case, I wouldn't be surprised if they just decide 'bah, if the universe can't handle me going that fast, it's too weak.' :p

More exotic than they are anyway.

As far as I can tell from the records I've been given access to and my own observations, they just don't experience inertia. I'm half-wondering if that's because it's too high-concept to instinctively grasp and so they can fly that fast because they don't know that they shouldn't be able to.
Given the exotic nature of their body, it could well be a function of determination and ignorance working hand-in-hand.

I -on the other hand- do experience inertia. If she starts accelerating seriously I'll have to bend space or do the semi-teleport thing where I become orange light. I'm not… Sure if Invincible or Omniman know I can do that, so it would probably be better not to reveal it if I don't have to. And she's probably unlikely to mention it, because she'd assume that they already know about it.

"What are the-" That actually gets me a frown. "-conditions? Am I allowed-?"

"How is he talking to me?"
Heh. I wonder if it actually occurred to her that he might not have been speaking English earlier, but rather discussing it with her in her viltrumite language...

"Universal translator. It doesn't seen the spoken-." I come to a halt as she appears fight in front of me. "Spoken word. A certain degree of intent is all that's required. With most people I'd have to make an effort-" Meaning extend my environmental shield over them. "-I've noticed that viltrumites-" Invincible. "-are easier to interact with."
Though it might be smarter to merely have it subtitle her body language in his vision than announce it out loud.

"It's not telepathy."

"No. If I could read minds then… I'd be in a very different position. With most humans I can read patterns of brain activity, but that doesn't work on viltrumites at all."
Too dense a structure to detect chemical activity, I suspect.

She stares at me intensely for a few moments, perhaps trying to work out exactly where the cut-off for 'communication' is. The she turns and accelerates fast towards the ship's open hangar.

I head after her at maximum space speed. Enough to be noticeable, not enough to trigger a response. I hope.
Though the crew might be momentarily confused at the orange glowing 'viltrumoid' coming towards them, I bet.

An interesting physiology. Perhaps some custom racial modification for micro-gravity conditions?

Anissa opens a wall-mounted locker and pulls out a headset and air mask which she then puts on.

"Vidor, come to the hangar. I've got a sparring partner for you."
Because the hangar is open to vacuum, isn't it? Not that that would trouble a viltrumite, after all.

Listen in.

"Is it Nowl-Ahn's son? I've been wondering whether he takes after his father more than his mother."
I wonder if Mark's grown a moustache yet in order to be a good little viltrumite?

Well... The Wiki entry makes him sound like a good little Viltrumite: Loyal, arrogant and uncaring of any 'lesser' being.

"He builds things. I need to know how weak he is."

Now he looks at me. "It's Nowl-Ahn's planet and the Regent's order. Is this approved?"
Looks like that estimate is spot on par.

Ah, taking the step a lot of other alt!Pauls baulked at, eh? Sensible enough, given that Mark and Nolan seem to prefer clean decapitations.

"You're being wasted, Anissa. You should have chosen to mate with a viltrumite; they wouldn't have selected you for this is you had."

Track and prepare to teleport.

"I'm a warrior, not a breeding sow." Vidor raises his eyebrows. "Say anything else and you will fight me instead."
What, does Vidor have some intentions in that direction, hmm? Though I suspect Anissa is well aware of them and isn't interested.

Vidor shrugs, then turns and floats towards me. I raise my right hand. "My orders don't allowed me to take actions that could damage the Earth. Do you have a preferred location in mind, or should I select one?"

"It makes no difference to me." He narrows his eyes slightly. "I'm curious why Nowl-Ahn give you his attention."
Confident, giving Matthew the home-field advantage. Not that it would help much.

Sadly, the pressure and weather conditions probably won't impair him much. But at least it won't risk cracking Earth open if things get out of hand.

I'm guessing a database of other alt!Paul's combat techniques was part of the stuff he got from the Controller... Pity he couldn't practice any of them.

"Is this as fast as you can go?"

"I doubt that you respect me, but please don't assume that I'm quite stupid enough to share tactical information with an opponent."
To be fair, some super-villains are. Usually because they get cocky, start monologuing and accidentally blab about their weakness without noticing. Most Super-heroes are smarter about it.

"I really don't understand why we're leaving your males alive. Using the females for breeding makes a degree of sense, since Maah-Akh has proven himself competent. But what possible purpose could you serve?"

"I don't know. You're right about using female viltrumites in this way, though. Adding human males to the breeding pool doesn't increase the number of children female viltrumites can have."
Sad to say, he has a point... One man can get a lot of women pregnant. But women can only carry one child at a time.

"Hm." He sounds approving. "Have you spoken of this to Nowl-Ahn?"

Monitor.
Expecting him to try and blindside you while you chat, eh? Smart.

For all we know, it could have been an Emperor forcing a harem option on the population. Even something as simple as Droit du seigneur.

Now, to get ready for the inevitable attempt at a speed-blitz.

I land on the ground as wait for-.

Vidor slams into the ground a short distance away, creating a mild earthquake in what I assume is an attempt to intimidate me. He looks at me in a cold and calculating way.
Good idea not to do this on Earth, if he's going to be like that.

"Ready?"

"Y-."

And he's gone and I've moved.
Heh. Brawn versus brains... Let the best man win.

Flying Brick versus the most powerful tool in the universe and all the guns it can make. This should be a challenging fight for both of them. Matthew doesn't have the combat experience he would benefit from, but Vidor has to catch hm to hurt him. On the other hand, Vidor only really has to connect once. And hopefully he doesn't go for the head.

I'm half-wondering if that's because it's too high-concept to instinctively grasp and so they can fly that fast because they don't know that they shouldn't be able to.

This is hilarious, he's thinking that Viltrumites are like WH40K Orks. Which I'm not sure if is true or not on the Orks' case so don't @ me on that.

Anyway, if Matthew has internalized the training manual provided to Orange Lanterns by the Illustres himself and also has schematics for the exotic weaponry available to the Orange Lantern Corp, I can see why he's more secure in his own abilities.

Still a dangerous encounter and unfortunately the Viltrumites don't have an "easy" weakness like Kryptonians, but they're also a relatively cheap copy, so this should be manageable.

Hey Zoat, I'm in the scoring highlands right now, you don't live near there, right?

This is hilarious, he's thinking that Viltrumites are like WH40K Orks. Which I'm not sure if is true or not on the Orks' case so don't @ me on that.
It's not. Orks are able to do what they do due to genetic programming in their algal DNA.
'as' should be 'and'
Thank you, corrected.
Hey Zoat, I'm in the scoring highlands right now, you don't live near there, right?
Well, it's closer than Timbuktu, if that's what you mean.

I live on the south coast of England.

Should I take this as proof that the Paul Reunion shared ring combat protocols between each other?

Anyone else not get an alert for this chapter? I only noticed because Zoat never misses an upload and I've been looking forward to more Invincipaul.

Only the story only alert went out for me.

Speaking of recharging, how is this Paul doing that is he literally feeding his ring with exotic energy from the center of the earth or did he find a lantern?

I remember he mentioned he is recharging, but we don't know how quite yet.
