With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

...Ok, I could have sworn antemergerentur meant 'old, before times,' or somehow 'unsunken,' but when I went to check the word, my dictionary, spell-check, and google all failed me. I think it's a misspelled word (Grayven says it when fighting Ahri'ahn at the Un-men compound), but while I'm fine not using it in the case where I wanted to, this is really bothering me. Mr. Zoat?

The old home town just… Ain't the same,
Like a derelict man who has died out of shame,
A jumble sale left out in the…

No, no. That's not fair at all.

But this whole situation is disappointing. Dolmen Gates are the second biggest improvement I've made to the world. Right after preserving Cadburys' chocolate.

"Heh."

Right after undoing global warming. Useful magical artefacts that can just slot into the world, reducing pollution, getting Atlanteans interacting with the surface, cutting travel times to next to nothing… And the longer it stayed there the more useful it made itself.

And now… Well… The ones we already made are still there, but the one Atlantean who was working with us and was on the surface when the Anti-Life broadcast happened… Didn't.. survive. I haven't checked, but it wouldn't surprise me to learn that magic users were actually more vulnerable than normal people due to their connection to the arcane side of the world.

I'm not sure if Mannheim didn't know about the portals, or didn't care about them, or didn't really have a way to move them, but he didn't do anything about them. Mitchell and Noriel had to stop the Bourneville City Boss doing a sort of evil Willy Wonka re-enactment with Cadbury's World at one point, but… Well, we were moving goods using the Gates before and… Morbid as it is, aside from a few name changes where people died and a few emergency League authority rulings to get land where all the potential owners died back into use, it's… Back into full working order.

I mostly check the value of my theoretical investment in medallions rather than pounds sterling these days…

Who was it-? I honestly don't remember who it was, who looked upon the damage wrought by the Great Fire of London and got excited at the chance to rebuild London as a modern city in its wake. Good for him, I suppose, but I'm just… I'm not annoyed or angry. I'm actually sad that it's all been curtailed like this.

Months since, and I still can't get back to what I was doing.

I suppose that I should check in with everyone.

"Orange Lantern Illustres to Watchtower. Anything you need me doing, or can you just forward me the to-do list?"

"Watchtower responding." Mr. Atom. "Orange Lantern, Batman has expressed a desire to speak to you in person. Go to Mount Justice and I will inform him that you are here."

"Rightoh. Going there now. Orange Lantern out."

I raise my right forefinger to my forehead and

step out, reappearing

next to the bundle of drives that characterise Happy Harbour.

It's… Quieter than it used to be. As a rural location, the death toll here wasn't… Too bad. But.. more than the death, people are just more sombre than they used to be. I suppose that after the Sheeda it was possible to believe that things would just go back to normal eventually. At least, if you weren't in one of the areas that was directly attacked. But everyone got exposed to the Anti-Life. Sections of the woodlands near the town have been cut down to make allotments-. A community farm, because while food supplies here weren't disrupted much, everyone living here thinks they could get disrupted badly if anything like that happens again.

And with the economy the way it is, having a cheaper hobby like growing your own food has a definite appeal.

I drift towards the mountain, taking in Euanthe's grove on the top. Still there, if not flourishing quite as much as it was with a dryad's constant attention. And no soon-to-be druid lying next to a tree blissed out on green magic rich fruit this time, which is probably good.

Hm.

I don my light power armour and dive into the water off the coast, powering through the water and entering the underwater tunnel into the lower level. I send my authentication signal to the force field system to actually enter the Mountain proper. This system is an upgraded version of a modification I made to the system after those Saremites got in and we got a definitive answer to the 'do they actually know we're here' question.

Gone are the happy days when I could just swim in.

I come out in the hangar, and… Ah, no bioship. It's a school day, so… I guess Martian Manhunter is using it? Or there's been an emergency of some kind. Not really a huge issue. Anyone-

Lantern Ghia'ta flies into the hangar, Lantern Rrab just behind her.

-could be.. using it. I send my armour back into subspace.

"Good morning."

Ghia'ta smiles. "Good morning!"

Lantern Rrab just nods a little cautiously. "Illustres."

"Apparently Batman wants to talk to me. Any idea what that's about?"

Ghia'ta shakes her head as I land on the shore. "No. Perhaps he wishes to coordinate a wide scale operation with you?"

"I suppose. What are you up to today?"

"I am volunteering at an orphanage."

I.. nod. That's something she's been doing during her enforced downtime. Children generally flexed rather than being broken under the Anti-Life, but that meant that there are a lot more children without a next of kin to take them on. I turn to Lantern Rrab, eyebrows raised.

"Um. Could you..? Tell me how the war against the Reach is going?"

I shrug, and flick a data packet from my ring to hers.

"The most recent fight involved me rescuing the last surviving members of an unusually intelligent species before the Reach could scoop out their brains to use as computers. We're winning, as much as space captured since the beginning of the war is any guide to go by. But we always knew that the Reach are defence in depth types, so…"

I shrug, and she nods.

"Interested in getting involved?" I pull my ring off my right hand and wiggle it at her. "One of my students recently gained enlightenment, so I've got some spare time?"

"Um." To her credit, she doesn't recoil much. "No. Thank you. I've got… A lot to learn before I try fighting the Reach."

"Good attitude, though I think it makes you the only member of this team who thinks that. What are you doing today?"

"Hal is showing me more advanced techniques!" She smiles as she-. Oh dear. Note to self, have a word with Lantern Jordan about-.

I consider Zatanna.

About talking to someone else about how to gently let someone know that you're not interested. Actually, Batman is probably a good person to go to with that.

I nod again. "Chihuahuan Desert?"

"Yes. How did you know?"

"Lantern Gardner and I started using it, then it expanded to all the Lanterns on Earth. I should probably try and get us all together at some point. Well, you have fun with that. I've got some mission reports to read."

So I'm guessing that they'll be dealing with Anarky in this chapter.

Usually it takes time for elements you've introduced in your story to play out, but seeing as Luthor is helping rebuild civilization, the League may not want to wait and give someone that could potentially disrupt that a chance to continue.

haven't checked, but it wouldn't surprised me to learn that magic users were actually more

"surprise"

. I haven't checked, but it wouldn't surprised me to learn that magic users were actually more vulnerable than normal people due to their connection to the arcane side of the world

Either that, or Manheim targeted them because he thought they could be a problem.

I'm not sure if Mannheim didn't know about the portals, or didn't care about them, or didn't really have a way to move them, but he didn't do anything about them

He was basically controlling most of the planet, so he may have thought getting rid of them was worthless.

Plus, he had access to Boom Tubes, so he didn't need them.

. Mitchell and Noriel had to stop the Bourneville City Boss doing a sort of evil Willy Wonka re-enactment with Cadbury's World at one point

I can just imagine said boss trying to turn people into weirdly colored midgets and forcing them to sing under pain of death.

I come out in the hangar, and… Ah, no bioship. It's a school day, so… I guess Martian Manhunter is using it?

Or it's flying on its own.

The latest season of Young Justice showed bishops as being more like animals. They even mate with each other.

I thought Hal already talked to Arisia about this? Did Hal's unnamed girlfriend die during the Anti-Life, causing Arisia to think she has a chance now that he's on the rebound?

And now… Well… The ones we already made are still there, but the one Atlantean who was working with us and was on the surface when the Anti-Life broadcast happened… Didn't.. survive. Just wondering, is this meant to be Septhian? Just don't recall hearing about him lately.

Well, that's a bit of a bleak start to a visit home for OL. And a noteworthy title. Looks like Lonnie will be making use of Enginehead's data sooner rather than later, by the sound of it. This will be interesting for OL...

No, no. That's not fair at all.

But this whole situation is disappointing. Dolmen Gates are the second biggest improvement I've made to the world. Right after preserving Cadburys' chocolate.
Interesting priorities there, OL. But entirely fitting for an Orange Lantern.

"Heh."

Right after undoing global warming. Useful magical artefacts that can just slot into the world, reducing pollution, getting Atlanteans interacting with the surface, cutting travel times to next to nothing… And the longer it stayed there the more useful it made itself.
An all-round good thing. Pity about Atlantis' current seclusion.

I haven't checked, but it wouldn't surprised me to learn that magic users were actually more vulnerable than normal people due to their connection to the arcane side of the world.
Makes sense. Their souls are more open to the mystical, and what could be more traumatic than having a chunk of Anti-life poured into your spiritual gas tank?

I'm assuming he gathered random people and put them through ironic tortures for fun.

I mostly check the value of my theoretical investment in medallions rather than pounds sterling these days…

Kind of depressed to see your good work set back like this, I suppose?

Months since, and I still can't get back to what I was doing.

I suppose that I should check in with everyone.
To be fair, OL, everyone's been in the same boat about things they were doing.

This'll be related to the Anarky thing, no doubt. Given that OL identified Lonnie as a person of note...

"Rightoh. Going there now. Orange Lantern out."

Hopefully the town isn't doing too badly, especially if kids are in school...

That's probably a lot more common these days in smaller towns all over the world.

Heh. Been a while since those pleasant days, eh?

Hm.

Probably glad to see things not backsliding around here.

Gone are the happy days when I could just swim in.

I come out in the hangar, and… Ah, no bioship. It's a school day, so… I guess Martian Manhunter is using it? Or there's been an emergency of some kind. Not really a huge issue. Anyone-
OL, it is an intelligent creature of its own. It might be napping somewhere.

Lantern Ghia'ta flies into the hangar, Lantern Rrab just behind her.

-could be.. using it. I send my armour back into subspace.
An enjoyable welcome, if nothing else. Good to see they're still hanging around Earth.

"Good morning."

Ghia'ta smiles. "Good morning!"
And surprisingly bubbly. I can only hope they were off-world during the whole thing.

Lantern Rrab just nods a little cautiously. "Illustres."

"Apparently Batman wants to talk to me. Any idea what that's about?"
Always fun to catch up on the latest gossip amongst the Team, isn't it, OL?

Ghia'ta shakes her head as I land on the shore. "No. Perhaps he wishes to coordinate a wide scale operation with you?"

"I suppose. What are you up to today?"
They're not as adept at rebuilding tasks as an Orange Lantern is, but they could certainly be helpful carrying supplies or providing law enforcement...

And the Violet Light is probably good at therapeutic uses like that. Let them feel loved for a little while, if nothing else.

"Um. Could you..? Tell me how the war against the Reach is going?"

I shrug, and flick a data packet from my ring to hers.
Hmm... She's not really got any dog in the fight, has she? Her home sector is far from the border. Professional curiosity, perhaps?

"The most recent fight involved me rescuing the last surviving members of an unusually intelligent species before the Reach could scoop out their brains to use as computers. We're winning, as much as space captured since the beginning of the war is any guide to go by. But we always knew that the Reach are defence in depth types, so…"
...The further they push, the harder the pushback from the Reach, yes...

I shrug, and she nods.

"Interested in getting involved?" I pull my ring off my right hand and wiggle it at her. "One of my students recently gained enlightenment, so I've got some spare time?"
OL, no poaching, please.

"Um." To her credit, she doesn't recoil much. "No. Thank you. I've got… A lot to learn before I try fighting the Reach."

"Good attitude, though I think it makes you the only member of this team who thinks that. What are you doing today?"
Too many cocky young bravos, eh?

"Hal is showing me more advanced techniques!" She smiles as she-. Oh dear. Note to self, have a word with Lantern Jordan about-.

You're probably not the best option on that front concerning advice about people's love lives, wanted or otherwise.

About talking to someone else about how to gently let someone know that you're not interested. Actually, Batman is probably a good person to go to with that.

I nod again. "Chihuahuan Desert?"
At least she's probably not using Green light to accelerate her ageing to maturity in this continuity. And yes, that is a thing she did in the mid-Eighties 'Green Lantern' comics.

"Yes. How did you know?"

"Lantern Gardener and I started using it, then it expanded to all the Lanterns on Earth. I should probably try and get us all together at some point. Well, you have fun with that. I've got some mission reports to read."
Don't forget Anya in that group, given that she's one of the sector Lanterns. Could be a good chance to get to know here.

It always feels a little odd coming home after a decent period away. Subtle changes to things that hit you because you weren't there to see them take shape. I mean, it's not like it's been months, like his first off-world foray. But still, he could probably hit up the League's mission reports database for a quick update off-screen. 😏 Who knows what could happen in the last couple of weeks?

It's refreshing to get an SI-centric view of the modern Earth-16. I was big into the changes he was bringing into the world, and the knowledge that he's aware of their near-total destruction and is as sad about it as I am is comforting.

Hopefully he'll be able to bring more changes in the future to improve upon what used to be there in the world, especially as Boss Smiley's attempts at curtailing his efforts has been reduced, if not removed completely.

He might have talked to her about it being inappropriate, but she may not have listened, or he didn't do a good enough job because it would have been really, really awkward.

@Mr Zoat, I forgot to ask, but is the fact that Luthor thought of Circe at the same time as Savitar when it came to allies who could transport something for him long distance an indicator that she's a member of the Light?

Also, can we get an update on the current and former members of the Team, the Justice League, and the Light?

Anarky may be one of multiple subjects of discussion. The "in person" bit makes me wonder if they won't touch on the thread to do with any ongoing issues with Bruce's relationship with fear after Paul's experience with integrating himself with his desires after his first orange merger. The fact that Paul was the one who exposed him to Smilex enhanced fear toxin might not make this as smooth as it could be otherwise, both from Paul's side as he was unhappy about the choice, and from Bruce's as he expressly didn't agree to it IIRC. Even after the ring based tune up afterwards, I'd be surprised if this didn't continue to have an effect on their mutual trust, among other things, even though they can still work with each other.

Batman being mad about someone having to enact a in case of an emergency plan for a fucking full on Anti Life invasion which discomforted him would be fucking rich.

It has me wondering if Batman is thinking of creating the Brother Eye system, as Bruce losing his trust in fellow heroes is what caused him to create it in the comics.

I just noticed that these quotation marks aren't colored orange.
Gardner, unless Guy has really developed a green thumb.
Thank you, corrected.

Remind me this evening.

So there wasn't a massive dip in chocolate supplies? I figured people would have tried to gorge on sweets, desperate to feel something positive in the face of antilife. On the other hand, after the first failed attempt, I guess working up the motivation to try it again would be difficult.

What would you even name a holiday celebrating the end of the antilife crisis? Heck, it deserves two days if you ask me. Hmm. Regardless of how many days, once the economy recovers a bit more? Festivals celebrating the Good Day will probably connect every ethnicity and religion around the world. Sounds nice.

I thought Hal already talked to Arisia about this? Did Hal's unnamed girlfriend die during the Anti-Life, causing Arisia to think she has a chance now that he's on the rebound?
The main issue with telling a teenager that something they really want to do is a bad idea is that even if you explain it very clearly, they might not listen or believe you (which is why I think that even if Paul had been a lot more clear with Zatanna than he was, the plot that followed could still have happened in a similar fashion). Likewise, emotions are not logical, and don't just stop even if you consciously decide not to act on them.

That said, if there was there a chapter where we see or find out that Hal talked to her, I don't recall it, but this is a long enough fic that I could have just forgotten. Does anyone remember it? For that matter, how long has Arisia been assigned to or visiting this Earth?

Arisia first came to Earth in part 1 of Episode 90: Sprited Away. Paul and Arisia talk about her feelings for Hal and how he rejected her in part 1 of Episode 110: Maladaptive. Links to relevant parts are down below.

Arisia Rrab's eyes flick briefly to Lantern Jordan, whose arms are crossed and who is regarding me with mild frustration. Dame Carol Ferris -14's armour has undergone a little modification since last time I saw her, a lilac undersuit augmented with glowing crystal plates. She even has a helmet. I'm actually impressed. I don't recognise the similarly dressed grey skinned blue eyed young woman with her, but they've both got glowing violet rings so I'm going to assume that Carol's mission on Zamaron was a success.
"Jordan's a good man. As my culture defines that concept. And that's not the only-"

Her eyes widen. "A-ahh…"

"-reasonable definition of good, and… I can understand why-."

"I didn't need-." She nods. "Hal's always been very clear about how he sees me. Even his mother's been mothering me."

"Okay. I'll consider that handled-."

"Ghia'ta thinks I should still… Try to change his mind. Slowly."

Thank you. OK, I'm going to suggest that Ghia'ta is largely to blame for the situation.

During Anti-Life infrastructure and transportation was destroyed, so they wouldn't be able to get their hands on new chocolate.

Post Anti-Life they're still rebuilding and the transportation may primarily be focused on necessary supplies and foods, like vegetables, not pleasure items like chocolate.

What would you even name a holiday celebrating the end of the antilife crisis?
Life Day or The Festival of Light.
