(Partially) fixing the tag system

The multiple chaos gacha and waifu catalog tags also should be merged
{waifu catalog - waifu catalog inspired - waifu catalog *is* used optimally - waifu catalog is not used optimally - waifu catalog rules are bended slightly - waifu catalog-ish - waifu catalogue - waifu catalogue homebrew - wiafu catalogue inspired - waifu catalogue likely - fuck waifu catalog - harem(its a waifu catalog fanfiction) - husband catalog - the company - the company fucks everyone - the company makes mistakes - fuck the company - inspired by "the company" tech - passingly related to the company - war against the company - slut life - slutlife - slut life origin story} waifu catalog
"company fucks everyone" and its associates (inspired, passingly related, etc.) are not Waifu Catalog, despite its proponents' insistence that they're the only Waifu Catalog, and should not be merged into it.

Abbreviations are not always things people understand, so keeping the final tag as Game of Thrones would be preferential I think. Also there are also series that overlap abbreviations, House of the Dragon and Highschool of the Dead are two very separate settings with pretty much nothing in common, but I've seen them both tagged as HotD.
Don't forget House of the Dead, or (eventually, soon enough) Highschool of the Dragon.

The '40K' tag should probably be joined to 'Warhammer 40K', given they are for the same setting.

The best tagging system I've seen use aliases, but also sub-tags. For instance, if you were to tag something as "nekomimi" it would alias to "cat-ears" and show up as a sub-tag for "kemonomimi" which would in turn alias to "animal ears", both allowing granulation and preventing bloat.

The sub-tags system is especially useful for franchise tags, allowing you to tag and search for a specific entry or world in a franchise without losing the supertag.

OC-I is not SI

OC-I is when you invent an OC and then insert them instead of yourself. These fics for the most part should be tagged SI tbh, but occasionally you'll get oc-i whoses background is believable enough but has too odd and very unique implications for how they end adapting to the setting to be the actual author.

edit

what I'm saying is that even though usually whether a fic is oc-i or si does not matter there is more than a fair few oc-i fics with an oc that's different enough from the author to be unmistakably an oc while not being so bizarre you doubt the oc could have actually existed on earth.

99% of protagonists that are claimed to be self-inserts are OC inserts.

This is gonna make blocking tags so much easier! Because there is so much redundancy, from typos like "Chaos Gatcha" instead of "Chaos Gacha", to shit like "Cultivation"; "Xianxia", "Xianxia things", "Xianxia-ish", "Xianxia Magic", "Xianxia Elements", "Cultivation Inspired", and more (All of these come down to the exact same thing, and that is Xianxia. Seriously, I don't think anything "Cultivation" is used in any other context but Xianxia, unless there is some weird story about gardening or farming that I missed and uses it in its conventional definition).

Slimming it down, and consolidating those we have, is gonna be so handy.

I'm gonna go through the tags myself, see what else I can find that's redundant, apart, and edit them in this post here, if I find the time. But, either way, I'm fully on board with this decision.

We could also use a merger of the various MLP tags, there's "mlp", "mlp:fim", and "My Little Pony" at least, and may be more that I don't Know of. And probably multiple variants of "mlp au" tags.

Every "[something] au" should be merged with "[something]" and "au" should be used as a separate tag

Here are some possible tag changes/mergers for better filtering of specific kinks and the like.
If your looking for clarification please ask.

---

Pregnancy - pregnant and all the other ones should probably just be merged into three specific tags of Fempreg - Mascpreg - Unipreg - UngenderedPreg, this will allow people that want too look for pregnancy content to not find a ton of Mpreg when they only want Fpreg and so on

Birth - Giving Birth - Birthing should all be set to Oral birth - Nipple birth - Urethra birth - Vaginal birth - Penile birth - Anal birth for proper filtering and searching like I said for the pregnancy stuff

Feedback wanted - constructive criticism wanted - author wants criticism and so on should probably just be merged into feedback wanted or something of the like.

Dom mc - dominant mc - dom main character - dominant lead and so on should just be Dominant MC/Lead, Same thing can be done fur submissive stuff

Ai assisted - Ai assisted story - Ai imagry - Ai images should all be merged to just AI assisted

Snippet - Short stories - stubs - random stories should probably all be merged into just one of them, which ever seems more logical

Inflation - Cumflation - jelly inflation - water inflation should be set to GenInflation - Liquid Inflation - CumInflation - Gas inflation - Solid inflation

Feral character - Ferals - Anthro - Anthropomorphic - Furry - Furries - Human - Monster, should be set to just three i think Humanoid - Monster - Anthropomorphic - Feral

Mind control - Mind break - Mind washing - Mind bending something like Mind break - Mind modification

I know there's like, a half-dozen or so different tags for Puella Magi Madoka Magica:

{pmmm - puella magi madoka magica - madoka magica - madoka} puella magi madoka magica

Then there's-

{yuri - lesbian} yuri

{yaoi - gay - yaoi/gay} yaoi

Which raises the interesting question of whether to use the jp or en words for the tags

Please this would be phenomenal my tag filter is huge and stuff still slips through. I wish y'all the best on wrangling the taggers lol. Maybe a simple tag for gay tags could be "Lgbt('tag')"?

... Why on earth would they merge Yaoi and Yuri into the same tag? People looking for one of those are unlikely to be happy to be suggested the other. And why are you including in your list stuff like "feminine_mc" and "saga_of_tanya"??

And worm (parahumans) too. Two pages of results without general worm tag.
People looove to invent new names for fiction, lol. Though this one was probably inspired by AO3 Parahumans Series.
(Parahumans) is good for disambiguation, and I wish more people used it. As I recall, Worm is published on Parahumans website, and has a sequel Ward, probably also published there.

Worm* and Ward are also single word titles and I could see them used as or in content tags in the future. And while it is less problematic in tag filtering, overly generic terms are too vague to search properly, as I have learned when looking for erotic video games that really could use far more unique titles.

Probably cannot get perfect here without at least ability to explicitly designate tags as fandom though.

*There is a story on DeviantArt that refers to a woman in full body bondage as 'worm'.

Haven't yet read the entire thread but i will absolutely caution/advocate against shortening fandom names to just initials.
For some like zzz it isn't much of an issue, but you run into situations where people may know a fandom by only a translated/original name while the shorthand is of the alternate name (MHA and bnha are similar, but but instantly obvious to someone who hasn't looked up original name for instance)
also, fandom's with similar/same shortened initials (hotd - you talking highschool of dead, house of dead, house of dragon?)

I was showing an example using my own excluded tag filter, the reason tanya is there is because there is three tags for it "saga_of_tanya_the_evil, tanya_degurechaff, youjo_senki" all three are the same anime, "feminine_mc" falls in either femboy, androgynous or genderless. As for yaoi yuri in one tag I wasn't i was referring to making something like a branch of tags "Lgbt(gay/yaoi), Lgbt(bisexual), Lgbt(lesbian/yuri) Lgbt(Trans man), Lgbt(Trans women), ect."

The one below is the hardest to pin down on one single tag:

{comment or else - comment whore - comment you lurkers - comments and interaction give me life - comments and interaction give me life muhehehe - comments and likes fuel my muse - comments are appreciated - comments are appreciated (putting this tag work?) - comments are life - comments are needed to progress - comments feed me - comments feed me and my ego - comments feed my muse - likes and comments make op happy - likes and votes let qm know you you are reading. - likes are nice - alerts for likes - author likes feedback - author likes to chat - author lives on comments and likes - feedback appreciated - feedback feeds me - feedback is fuel for the muse - feedback makes qm happy - feedback makes the author better - feedback makes the author happy - feedback needed - feeback pleases me - feedback welcome - author enjoys feedback - author appreciates constructive criticism - criticism always welcome - criticism is also cool - criticism is valued - criticism much appreciated - criticism welcome(constructiveness appreciated) - criticism would be appreciated - a criticism is fine too - actual criticism is just as good - can't get better without criticism - constructive criticism appreciated - constructive criticism does as well - constructive criticism is heavily appreciated! - constructive criticism makes the author happy - author appreciates constructive criticism - discussion = author feels validated - discussion and comments make the author happy - discussion breeds awesomeness - discussion encourages the qm - discussion feeds me - discussion feeds me metaphorically - discussion encouraged - discussion heavily encouraged - discussion is encouraged - discussion is encouraged motherfuckers! ideas are encouraged! - ideas encouraged - questions encouraged}

Literally merge all of these to "OP is an attention whore" :p It's a forum, people don't need to be told to post, they either will or they won't.

1) you should separate out your recommendations, as others have done, into separate subcategories. Don't just dump a list of "here is everything I want to be able to search for".
2) How would that set of branches of tags particularly help? Why are you trying to get yaoi and yuri stories in the same search?

1) Not what I want to search for, it wasn't a recommendation it was an example of how much I have to filter to get stories without said elements.
2) You are misunderstanding not in the same story, not one tag, more like a subset of tags. If its a yaoi or gay story it gets tagged as Lgbt(gay/yaoi) and only that one tag(of the branch or subset) for example. So on and so forth with other stories.

You seem to be assuming we'll have an entire systems of tags and sub-tags so you could search (or exclude) either the entire group of tags, or specific sub-tags in the group.
While that certainly would be useful, that's not what is being discussed.
We're just talking about merging tags. Since you can actually search for (or exclude) multiple tags, but once the tags are merged can't search or exclude sub-elements of them, the only tags that will get merged are those that no one has a use for them being kept separate.

Right, but - why? You keep repeating the same proposal but that's not making it any clearer as to how this would help clear up misspellings, etc? There's an obvious reason to merge "my hero academia" and "boku no hero academia", for instance, or to merge "futa" and "futanari", but I don't see how making these "LGBT(gay/yaoi)" or whatever tags is going to help over just having "gay" and "lesbian" (or "yaoi" and "yuri", or whatever we end up standardising on)?

What about merging the sonic tags. I don't know how many there is but I can't find more than 30 to lower story's when I search for sonic story's.
There's six different Sonic tags.
1. Sonic.
2. Sonic the hedgehog.
3. Sonic the hedgehog elements.
4. Sonic the hedgehog setting.
5. Archie sonic.
6. Idw sonic.

Ah true I got too ahead of myself, thinking of a different way of tagging.

I think both of these could be consolidated into just "Nikke", since that's what everyone calls it, rather than dropping the whole name, but if you want to be really clear, then both work equally well, and you could just pick one.

1. Just edit your old post.

2. These should be merged into just "God of War".
