She sure doesn't look 17. Rudolf looks like she could pass for 17 especially when she's wearing the school uniform (although her racewear makes her look a lot older). Maru is in the "Adult Supervision" Club with Super Creek and Ramonu where the uniform only makes it more obvious. If anything Maru actually looks old enough to be Chiyo's mother.

Also recall that in Season 2 of Umamusame Mejiro McQueen had that moment of hesitation in the race right before that match with Rice Shower. Umas can get surprisingly skittish and if they aren't used to Shirogane from racing her all the time or just by knowing her the people around her can easily get thrown off of their game.

(Admittedly, Shirogane was maintaining exactly such a schedule, but given she was over 13 years old by then, she was hardly dominating the event.) On the other hand, participating in a race is not cheap, so having no prizes would effectively exclude anyone but the larger stables or those with wealthy private backers. And on the third hand, Shirogane performed better when there was a clear reward for success. These actually remind me of a Webcomic Series on Pixiv that the UmaMusume Reddit has been Translating. The Author taking Interviews from zines and making UmaMusume adaptations with a Citation on virtually every Page of where the Text actually came from. The one time s/he didn't do that was Haru Durarara. That one had the last Page literally be a representative of the Audience shouting at her/him about them only for her/him to point out the Primary Source? The Author themself. S/he interviewed the actual jockey for the Story. S/he's now part of the list of viable Primary Sources as much as those zines are. A Story directly from the horse's mouth.

Although I can't remember the Name of the Webcomic. You probably could find it by Googling "UmaMusume Facts Webcomic" or something like that.

There's something about the Pale one next to you makes you feel like you're being tested, and making it might be really important for your racing future, and in a choked breath you realize who's on the gate next to you.

There's is a predator next to you this isn´t just a race this is your own test of resolve, you either pass The Silver Standard and meet your mettle, or become part of the mob.

The Goddesses are testing you, if you manage to withstand the fear, the nerves, the anxiety, you will be changed, the more you think about it the more electrified you feel the air around you.

And in a sudden realization you just know, once the race starts you will give it you all, your adrenaline spikes, you just know, run to beat her or break trying.

It ended a little more pretentious than intended, not sure about the last part.

Looking at the stuff about Hokuto Vega, who was the last best horse the farm seemed to have produced so far:

She had her most successful racing season in 1996. She won 8 of the 10 races she competed in during the 1996 season. She broke well from the gates and settled in the back of the pack, but rounding the corner into the final straight, she suddenly fell, colliding with Bijou d'Inde. She had a poor prognosis, and was euthanized shortly after as a result.[5] Due to quarantine regulations, her body was never repatriated to Japan. As she died before she could become a broodmare, she produced no foals. Shortly after her death, Kawasaki Racecourse established the Sparking Lady Cup, also called the Hokuto Vega Memorial in her honor, which is run over a 1600 meter dirt track.

The farm also lost one of their more promising broodmares around that time due to miscarriage, so it was year of disaster.

This could be an in universe explanation for them pushing the horse Shirogane into racing despite her small size and lackluster speed, since they were desperate for anything to go right.

Hokuto Venus being a mixed dirt/turf runner fits with Shirogane being decent on both as well, and Hokuto Vega winning the Kawasaki Kinen twice sort of makes Steady Distance being Shiro's friend there creates a nod to that.

Shiro has an interest in running against Steady Distance in an official race at some point, and Steady is dirt racer. Kawasaki is also the race course for her home prefecture, so there's some more local desire for a sort of local hero to run there.

I'm glad that the pose gives off the almost languid intimidation that Shiro has, she's basically living out her retirement at this point, but she can give these young bucks a run for their money if they really want to try her. It's good to get the blood pumping now and again.
