I have no problem with cliffhanger or the multiple point of view as people react to cam reaching for the dark side. It's well executed and make for a great chapter !

I do however find that there is some contradiction in how cam approach gamer mind. I don't really care if he uses it or not in the last three chapter, I just find how he justify it to himself quite discordant (which is completely subjective). I will try to explain where that feeling of wrongness come from fo me.

I considered activating Player's Mind but decided against it. Before I'd removed it from the default combat abilities that auto-activated – and thus why it didn't activate automatically while running for my life from the greater krayt dragon – I'd come to realise that even though it was countering my emotions during combat, it was also slowing my reactions. Emotions, and the chemicals a body created in tense situations, helped one focus if harnessed correctly. And while this body was still growing and maturing, I felt it was now time for me to begin to learn to handle those reactions so that there was less risk that an unexpected emotional reaction in the future overrode my control and cost me my life.

While Player's Mind wasn't active, my adrenaline was pumping, and I felt I was still moving and reacting at a decent enough level to keep fighting; levels that I'd lose if Player's Mind was active and limiting my emotional responses. Of course, that was before Force Speed and Bullet-Time were taken into consideration as even badly injured, they still made me move faster than most normal sentients could track.

As the first point, I can't comprehend how adrenaline can give better reflex and speed compared to force speed and bullet time ? Just look up this video of Qui Gon and Kenobi VS Trade Federation Droids and how they evade with a speed no hormone reaction could improve in anyway. While it could be a good thing when not using or being able to use said powers it does not feel like it would add anything to them. Worse it come at the price of loosing focus and clarity of thought which are critical in battle. And Cam as a military man should be aware of that. It may be a crutch that needs to go but now is the worst moment for tossing it away.

He did forget about player mind when that whole fiasco came about and could still forget about using it now especially after finishing a fight to the death just to be shot. It would flow better to him tapping the dark side than any justification for not using the power.

Plus, there was also the fact that if I relied on it to maintain control over my emotions, I was cutting myself from a part of myself, which would make my discussions with Serra regarding the Force and emotions completely hypocritical. And yes, not using Player's Mind was also cutting off a part of myself, but that ability was one no one else had and something I felt was disturbingly unnatural, thus to not use it was the lesser of the two evils when dealing with denying a part of myself.

However, I suspected that there were going to be times where using it would be advantageous; like dealing with the High Council when I didn't want to give any of them the satisfaction of getting an emotional response out of me.

This is the second point. This monologue is completely irrelevant to his current critical and deadly situation. It might be caused by his wound and things happening too quickly to catch a breath. That would however be a point for player mind as it not only mute emotions but help to keep focus and think clearly.

It is however a good point. It would benefit him to learn better emotional control which he should do in a safe environment. He did abuse player mind a lot. It's one thing to use it to escape palpatine and the jedi council notice and another to use it whenever he is rattled.

I just can't help feeling that would have been something to leave for the next chapter as him not using player mind was what led to him almost dying. He didn't remove his bracer with the code when he decided to radio in for a rescue to try in another place and the krayt dragon appeared. I would imagine that in the near future when reflecting on how this is not a game (good character growth !) he would think about when to use player mind and that point could be made there.

As a last point I would point out the lack of logic in using the fact no one else as player mind as an argument as no one else as a minimap or an inventory and Cam use them with relish. The other argument like is talk with Serra and feeling unnatural when cutting off his emotion are perfectly valid points and do not need additional justifications to explain his desire to not use player mind.

Those are the points I feel made an impact on the discordant feeling the Cam PoV part of the chapter left in me.

Keep up the good work, I'm thrilled to see Fay reaction and the result in next chapter !

See some pushback on the Player's Mind debate. That's fine, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. That being said, it seems like people don't really get the issue. First, to get this out of the way, Player's Mind doesn't "emotionally lobotomize" you. I don't know who came up with that fanon bullshit, but anyone who's actually read The Gamer manhwa knows that shit ain't true. It does three things ala the canon flavor text:
  1. Allows the user to calmly and logically think things through.
  2. Allows peaceful state of mind.
  3. Immunity to mental disorder.
Mechanically and narratively, what this meant in the story was that the MC couldn't lose his shit, nor could his mind be breached by anything less than a fucking fellow OP cheat character who could rival him with her own bullshit abilities and only after he "activated her trap card"(and she still couldn't close the deal and take over his mind). But there are plenty of instances of the original Gamer MC feeling shocked, scared, surprised, happy, pissed, embarrassed, smug, etc. Gamer's mind just prevents him from actually losing his shit for any given reason, or any other debilitating mental effects like pain, exhaustion, confusion, blinding rage from fucking up his thought process. His emotions weren't suppressed, there was just an ever-present bastion of peace/order that his thoughts fell back on, instead of being overwhelmed and breaking down as a normal person would.

Will all that being said, Cameron's choice not to use it when he was beginning to freak the fuck out the last chapter and when he was on the verge of his mind going blank from the pain this chapter, makes no fucking sense for the reasons given. And you know what? The reason could have been as illogical and emotional, but also simple, as "he didn't like the way it made him feel." That would have been totally fine on its own. Would have set up a plot point for some later introspection too.

But instead, the main reason given comes off as complete and total dumbassery from a reincarnate who has seen war. He tries to justify his decision using a logic that makes no fucking sense and holds no water. You don't use life and death situations as training opportunities. But I've gone over that in a previous post. Needless to say, his "reasons" for not using it were given simply to cover up the fact that the author was setting up a situation where he would be pushed to use the Dark Side, which couldn't happen if he had that ability active.

Which to be fair, makes sense from a writing perspective.

'A' needs to happen for the character to use 'C', but that can't happen if the character is using 'B', so having a reason for 'B' to be not active. Makes sense, but it's the bullshit reason given that makes it feel so fucking contrived and robs me of my narrative enjoyment. I can literally feel the author reaching into Cam's mind and going "oh, that could be tricky, lets have him use this bit of reasoning instead so that he doesn't do that". And that's the absolute worst thing you want a reader to be able to feel.

Once the presence of a man behind the curtain becomes obvious, you lose the magic.

I couldn't help but smile at seeing her dance from foot to foot in excitement. "How? And what would I do with the money from selling it?" I asked, playing on my status as a Jedi. Honestly, I could publish it, but I doubted the money earned from that would amount to much. Plus, it was far easier to acquire funds from other sources; like the slavers who had tried to kidnap a group of locals a few weeks earlier.
...Seriously? One of the best selling book stories in human history and he "doesn't think it will make much money".

Yes, this world has Jedi and force users. It also has plenty of worlds where force users are few and FAR between, making them legendary wizards in local equivalence. This is a story about wizards and magic and shit. And a Royal Princess, who doubtless has entire LIBRARIES at her disposal, thinks it's brilliant.

Um, what?

Even if it only sells MODERATELY well, in a "country" as big as the Republic is, that's a TON of sales! That's... arrrggggggg. Does he not understand finance!? With that many potential readers, let alone any potential movie deals that could come if it's successful enough, the royalties alone are insane! It made insane money on just Earth, let alone an entire GALAXY! And he's got his name to go on for sales too - a book written by him, the "legendary" descendant of Bastila Shan and Revan, would for no other reason than his NAME sell in the beginning, and then once people realized it was actually GOOD?

If his photographic memory also includes things from his past life, then he should stop everything and just reproduce all the best sellers! Harry Potter, A Song of Ice and Fire, Lord of the Rings, and so many more. He would be able to fund basically whatever the hell he wanted after that!

I get you probably didn't want to make him "insta-rich" and get rid of many obstacles (though wealth won't solve everything, it does fix a LOT) but in that case his photographic memory would be better off just working on anything he saw AFTER getting the skill and not before, because book sales would make him INSANE money. ESPECIALLY if he just self-published and sold it in e-book format on datapads, since he doesn't need an editor or anything, and everyone uses datapads anyway!

I'm... the sheer dissonance between what happened and how that should have went down is killing me.

I agree with the decision to not use Player's Mind, it's by far one of the worst elements of Gamer fics. A perfectly rational protagonist isn't an interesting one.
Players mind isn't a bad power, its just that authors always reinterpret it away from the source material. For Jihan in the manga/litenovel gamers mind allowed him to feel quite a bit, but his reactions to things were limited to what a player would experience sitting behind their keyboard, playing a favorite new game. A good horror game could still scare the shit out of you... but it wouldn't be freeze and piss your pants terror no matter how skilled the devs were. An enemy mage could use mind control on your character, but it would show up as a debuff, not as a psychic attack affecting you. Romances would be as impactful as any dating sim. are you the sort to get wrapped up in the waifu wars?

Not... this. This emotionless liability offered by most fanfiction writers.

But I think, given how explorer is playing with the tropes, that he intends for that to be corrected with the next "game update" at cams 18th bday.
while this wasn't my favorite chapter, I still enjoyed the different perspectives.
definitely. The perspectives and developments abroad were good content, it just would have been better had cams part been posted with the previous chapter with the perspectives as an interlude and cam not juggling the idiot ball of the bracers and power choices. Him getting his shit kicked in by plot anti-armor and cliffhangers makes for good tension, idiot balls do not.

Game of thrones would work. but Harry Potter would be harder because the muggle world is pretty important to the setting, despite how little it comes up. If he can juggle that though, I'd add in the Dresdenfiles series. It's got a metric shit ton of applicable ideas for force users and is a great series besides, for all that I often wanna strangle Harry Dresden.

I think the most frustrating part of this chapter, was that it was 16k words, and the story didn't seem to progress. He tapped into the dark side... And then we get 2-3k words from a bunch of different perspectives of the same event, but it just seems unnecessary. Additionally, at that point, there's no reason to not pull a gun out of your inventory, and shoot them. Especially if the reinforcements are taking that long to get there.

I feel so unsatisfied. I realize that the force wave was a great way to check up on the other characters, but I feel like only dooku and sidious were necessary. The rest could be solved with a couple lines when cam meets them again

Like with the stories and movies I remembered, many of the songs would not work here as they referred to Earth-specific details, but a lot would. And everyone deserved to hear classics like Living on a Prayer, Welcome to the Jungle and Freebird.
Well, he's getting better, thankfully. But while he is probably right about the songs, he is wrong about the stories. "Earth specific details" are perfectly valid. We read stories of other worlds all the time. Other worlds with their own "world specific" details. Star Wars being one of them. All he has to do is pass of anything "earth specific" as a result of the "fake world" that his books take place in. How is this not obvious to him?

It's fine for offering to the public, generally speaking, but earth specific details include assumptions it expects the audience to understand about a great deal of the setting. If the audience doesn't twig onto those assumptions, it's much less likely to be well received.

I actually liked the chapter, to an extent.
I have no view on the debate in how a player's mind power actually works, I am totally willing to go with the narrative/ author's view even if they later have a moment of introspection and change it. What I didn't enjoy was internal deliberations on player's mind when you are in middle of action. From a readers perspective it kinda destroyed the action tempo you were building up.
If I have to rate the sections then Cam & Sith sections were enjoyable. While we didn't completely get Pelagius POV, there were enough hints to show it could have far reaching impacts. Plus this chapter demonstrated that Cam does not have plot armour. Which is an important point from narration. Cam is currently focused on versatility, which is great as being a Gamer he can easily & quickly get lot of skills to a good level. But this has come at the cost that he isn't able to use his best tools for the situation. Like author rightly pointed out Cam forgot to use his teleport skill. So some introspection on those lines is much needed.
Yoda & Dooku POV were ok, not really useful but gave some confirmations. If you remove those, doesn't really impact the story. Serra and Padme sections felt more like fillers, kinda confirming that they really 'admire' Cam but add little value.

I have some questions but will Ping you on discord to understand those.
Thanks again for using your free time to write this fantastic story.

Almost died once again because he wanted to impress some barbarians with good iron this whole mandalorian arc has seemed pretty useless to me all the skills hes gained he could have obtained through solo training or by hiring a trainer And hes almost died twice because he won't use the the skill tailored to the situations or TAKE OFF THE FUCKING SUPPRESSION CUFF recently reading this has turned into an exercise in frustration to me and if this keeps happening I'm probably gonna drop

Oh, but haven't you heard the author every time somone brings this up? "Don't worry guys, the number of breaths Cameron took while speaking to Mandalorian number seven will be extremely important later in the story!"

The Gamer Mind fucks with the mind of the user, it is like the Dark Side it is a sweet drug that subtly changes you.

I mean it was implied by how his Full Jedi future just said fuck it all and kept using Gamer Mind forever, why the fuck would Cameron do such a dumb thing, Gamer Mind is addictive is the only explanation I can think of.

"Perhaps." Nia responded as she glanced at the man and I wondered how the pair were going to work together with Nia being ex-Death Watch and Wrajud seemingly being not only a member of Pre Vizsla's faction of Death Watch.
Not only a member, but what? There should be something else here too.

"Well come on," I began as I reignited my lightsaber, and completed the Makashi salute. "I said I had a few minutes to spare, not an hour while your brain tries to process what just happened."
Someone has been training with Dooku too long! Lmao.

This was perfect. A great reflection of the situation, a realistic reaction, while also a reflection of the personality he should have after being with such a master.

However, if not for the Jedi spotting the security flaw, he wouldn't have been present to witness Cameron spar with Grandmaster Yoda. That had made the inconveniences of having to hire slicers to develop a new program for the Jedi Temple's droids – and then silence those slicers – worthwhile as it proved the boy had potential and power.
This is perfect. Excellent use of the protagonist doing an objectively good thing that works against them regardless.

Too few authors feel the need to let the bad guys have wins as well as the good guys.

Wonderfully done.

And now this is the last current chapter. A hell of a ride! Not often I find things as well written as this, so I look forward to seeing it continued!

Okay, now that I have caught up...

A few things on the latest chapter.

1. Gamer's Mind - People seem to have all sorts of ideas and claims on what it can prevent. But most of them seem weird.

A) Someone thought it could stop you being knocked unconscious. Unconsciousness is typically a physical thing, not a "mental status effect".

B) Gamer's Mind not causing emotional lobotomy. Uh, this is NOT The Gamer. This is a story BASED on the ability FROM The Gamer. As such, it is an AU, and how Gamer's Mind works and what it does or doesn't do is up to the author. So long as they are consistent with how it works, they make the decision, not the reader. Deal with it. Frankly, for THIS setting, having it do that MAKES SENSE, as emotions are the one major "problem" for the MC to overcome - and having Gamer's Mind enhance that problem gives his Gamer abilities a much needed drawback to help counter their effectiveness, which is REALLY needed since no one else seems to have been given anything extra to give Shan a challenge. Game balance is a thing. Without Gamer's Mind having a drawback, it'd cross the line IMHO too far into "Gary Stu" territory instead of just, fun OP protagonist. Since he has very little actual external danger, he needs internal danger. There has to be SOMETHING for him to overcome.

2. The Krayt Fight - Ended pretty much how I expected, only way to kill it was through the eye and straight into the brain. However the reach for the Dark Side felt contrived here to me, but for a different reason.

Shan felt desperate enough, but not angry enough. If it had just been desperation, it would have felt fine to me, but when those who felt him touch it felt "RAGE" when he did... it felt off. Like his anger was forced for the scene. It'd have been more believable if it happened when Serra was nearly raped, IMHO. For him to be angrier now than he was then... feels wrong.

3. Nice to see some other POVs at this juncture. Most seem against you having done that, but I think it fits quite well. Their issue is more one of being impatient for the next part, than valid, IMHO.

If this were a movie, this would be the perfect place for such a thing, and no one would complain because the scene would happen, and immediately after the movie continues. Thus, I feel that this is just folks whining because they have to wait instead of continuing on, not because it doesn't fit.

4. Windu - Maybe this is because I know far too little about Mace Windu, but the idea that he is judging Shan based on his LINEAGE rather than Shan himself feels off. Short sighted, but in a way that even the Jedi should comprehend as fucking retarded, even at their worst. It's basically no different than racism, which they are against - but that could be me having a higher bar for them than they should actually have.

That said, if Shan has been going over all the known force powers, why have we not heard about Shatterpoint from him yet, even if he has to master other powers first? He should know of it, I believe.

Overall, great work, not perfect, but no story ever is, and jt's always easier to see flaws in works written by others than our own, so keep that in mind when reading criticism, including mine that I sent you in a PM.

Sure, we get that, but it's the weirdest flex. Why do so many authors want to turn Players mind from a "Don't panic" button to "My Little Sociopath"? It was pretty cool in the beginning that USSExplorer used the contradiction between fannon and source to poke fun at that, subverting things, but then the weird janky monologue made it weird and janky.

Order 66 (and by extension the dragon and these hunters) are easy examples of danger for even OP characters like Revan and Exar Kun that don't involve a force user with bigger balls. GM doesn't need a flaw for internal or external danger. A better source of pressure were things like with Keto's injuries, where he just didn't have the skills needed to pass the scenario.

Mace is, in my opinion, a good example of why the Jedi are kind of garbage. His ostensible because two of Cam's great grandparents, Revan and Bastila, not only were Jedi who had kids—which is normally against the rules—but both fell to the Dark Side at one point. Mace being a zealot,he believes that these are unacceptable, and refuses to be moved to the contrary—you'll notice that he failed to actually acknowledge or respond to any of the counter-arguments Yoda presented him with.

There's also how, in the movies, he was very concerned about the political power of the Jedi Order, and its influence in the Senate in particular. Which is actually pretty damn hypocritical, since Jedi aren't supposed to seek power over others. And if he's concerned about the Order's Power, what about his own? And what is Cam, the most obvious Chosen One that ever was, if not a threat to the entrenched power of the established order?

So, yeah, I think a big part of his problem is that he feels Cam is a threat to the established power structure within the Order, and possibly to himself in particular. Whether or not he acknowledges this, or if he's lying to himself about those feelings, is another matter entirely.

I think it works in the context of this story. It's basically an easy button for achieving Jedi Serenity, or something close enough to approximate it. Which is kind of a big deal, considering how it's been foreshadowed that he'll go down a Grey path.

The inner monologue is entirely separate from the point I was making. I was talking about how the ability works, not how the character expressed things.

My point is that people seem to be batching about "so many authors change the ability that way" and that's not a valid complaint.

It doesn't matter if a million other authors made the same change and it was a stupid one in their story - what matters is if that change fits THIS story. Butching about what other authors did, to THIS author, is ridiculous, as he has nothing to do with that.

Basically, until people lay out a complaint for why that change doesn't work in THIS story and setting, nothing they say about that change holds any merit whatsoever.

That said, again, the change itself, and the monologue ABOUT that change are two entirely different things.

Except that he already KNOWS about Order 66, and the only real danger of that, was the surprise.

You cannot call a surprise attack a danger when it is no longer a surprise attack, especially if the one launching it doesn't know that you know. That typically turns it from a danger into an advantage. Especially with him gathering an army of his own to counter the clone army.

Sorry, but this point has no valid grounds in the context of this story, which again, is my point. People need to focus on the context of THIS story, and not all the others they may have read, for their criticisms to hold merit.

Each story is self contained, and must be judged as such, not as a collective, which is what most here are doing, albeit seemingly unintentionally.

lunasmeow you're going to granular and either missing or ignoring the point of the arguments.

Massed fire has already taken down Cam's shields in story when he knew about it, so the surprise of order 66 isn't the issue. Even if he'd taken off his bracers, the combination of the hunters and the dragon are believably enough to wear him down as well. there is plentiful sufficient pressure in the setting to take down even the memorable names of the setting. The bracers weren't needed and the weird excuses and hickups made the narrative strained and janky.

Players mind was played up in this story repeatedly as a subversion of both source material and fan cliche's, so coming back to an out of place monologue that doesn't fit with the rest of his uses or monologues and is bad timing on top of that made the narrative strained and janky.

You're focusing too much on the false dichotomy of author source vs original source when we've been using both as simultaneous justification.

Also because of this story I have purchased kotor1 and if i enjoy it ill be getting kotor2 as well.
Pretty sure you will. Despite the ancient graphics, it's a pretty good game. And quite replayable, which is uncommon.
After you play KOTOR2 though, you should watch The Philosophy of Kreia. Its kinda crazy the stuff you can miss playing heavy sith or jedi in either game.

Maybe it's just my take on the force as yin and yang instead of good and evil, but I just instinctively end up going mid-ground in games that give you a choice.

I tried a few colours, and bar ones I've now set aside for Jedi/Sith/Revan, none seem to work well in both light and dark modes.
So I've just returned the text to the original colour but right-aligned it. That should make it clear there is something different about that scene and allow people on any mode to be able to read it clearly.

I hope.

I am currently rereading, and right aligned is a pain for me to read.

May I suggest to use a different font instead?

Holy guacamole, that's a lot of skills and thingies on that table!

Seriously though, I do hope that you don't let those details bog you down in the storytelling unless they help out to move the story along.

Otherwise, that's a whole load of details to keep tabs on, and that can cripple productivity something fierce. :(

Thanks for the share, it puts things in perspective as to how productive has Cameron been. :)
