And In The Beginning, The World Begot A Fool...

Here is Zodiac City. A city of misfits and magicians, housing a proud, fierce, and opinionated population of around 820,000 people. The citizens live, work, and relax in the various districts of the city, which are named for the zodiac sign magic used by the populace . It is seated on a river, kept clean with rigorous applications of magic, and has a booming agricultural and industrial based economy making food and magical trinkets for individuals the world over.

Along with this, the city is headed by its Mayor, Steven Crowley, and advised by the Council Of Magi, and assisted by countless individuals that debate issues that could affect the city. Under their rule the city has experienced rapid growth, leaps in social policies, and become a little bit like a wizardly utopia. However, like with all things, not everyone is nice, calm, and peaceful. And to guard against these sorts are The Libra Lawkeepers.

These are your employers. The Libra Lawkeepers are the peacekeepers and military might of the city, protecting it from threats within and without. Under the stern and effective leadership of current police chief, Rutgart O'Harris, the crime within the city is practically non-existent and is kept that way through a mixture of intellect, reasoning, and the ability of the average police officer to throw a perp through a window before setting them on fire using nothing but sheer force of will.

Recently, however, strange happenings have been occurring. Well, more unusual than the norm at any rate. Seemingly out of thin air, monsters and bizzare creatures would manifest, spreading chaos, destruction, and general mayham where it pleased, leaving behind only a card when finally subdued and destroyed. The events are so unsettling that an entire new branch of the Police has been formed. These officers lack an official name but the job they do doesn't. It is known as The Arcana Beat, and it is the solemn sworn duty of these police officers to see to it that these card related menaces are fully investigated, understood, and stopped.

You are a rookie and you have willingly joined, of your own volition, The Arcana Beat. As you walk into the office, you gaze around and can't help but notice the amount of officers with bruises and wounds in various states of dress. You can tell that this is not gonna be an easy job.

So... Who ARE you exactly?

(You get 13 points to distribute amongst the stats and you can pick one zodiac magic to specialize in. Also note I'm looking for about 3 people total to do this.)

Edmond has always had a bit of a hard time fitting into places. He was the weak runt of his family and was always shoved around because of how easy it was to do so. Incidentally, the frustrations from constant abuse was the perfect spark for his magical talent;, the flames that followed left him a rather bad record and kept people distant.

He hopes to join the Arcana beat to find a place where his fires can be tamed, and maybe find a place of belonging along the way.

Cain used to be a Trashball player, but then he took an arrow to the knee. While he is completely recovered, the whole unlikely has left him slightly paranoid regarding stadiums, forcing a career change. He joined the force mostly because his mama told him to.

While I do love a good round of aprooval, I think he's looking for three players, not one group guy.

Re: The Arcana Beat (QQ Version)

Could try something like Clint Carver or Phineas Smith. There's also random name generators such as Behind The Name and this one here.

I decided not to play. Nerves more than anything. I will watch though.

As for why... I have autism. Only mild, but social anxiety sucks. And I'm a pisces which means I'm very much a sit-in-the-background/loner type before that. I pretty much had a shiny attack when I saw this so...

Age:22
Burliness:2
Hardiness:3
Flexibility:4
Arcanity:4
Chosen Zodiac Magic:
Cancer (Supportive Water Magics) Main Stat: Flexibility. Secondary Stat: Arcanity.

Nele hails from a copper family that while not among those that rose up high where still a fixture in the community. her grandfather was a immigrant to this land so so she looks a bit exotic with her dark skin compared to others. Still she and her family are usually accepted here and she just has to deal with a different set of curse words then her colleges if she gets a perp.
And even if she is walking a different beat then her brothers she knows that she will do everything in her powers to keep this city save.

Re: The Arcana Beat (QQ Version)

Occular changed my mind. Thank him for me trying this.

Name: Jormund "Jor" Mathuel
Age:21
Burliness:5
Hardiness:2
Flexibility:2
Arcanity:4
Chosen Zodiac Magic:
Capricorn (Mixed Earth Magics) Main Stat: Burliness. Secondary Stat: Arcanity.

Coming from a merchent family of six, and being the second oldest, Jormund had heard of and seen how bandits can and did run roughshod over various traveling merchents because they were stronger than their victims. He has also seen these same bandits be crushed by mercenaries and soldiers escorting those merchents. With an ambition to never be weak like that Jormund had originally been planning to become a soldier initially in order to improve himself and his magic. With the creation of the Special Forces those plans have been changed.

Quiet and seemingly reckless Jormund actually plans and practices for as many situations as he can think of. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your point of view, most of those plans are "Find the weak spot and SMASH it" and considering he uses Earth magic, yes it does need capitalization.

Re: The Arcana Beat (QQ Version)

Alright, giving it one more day for any other entries and then I'll pick and we'll proceed.

Apps closed folks, updating the OP with the selected applicants soon.

Re: The Arcana Beat (QQ Version)

Name: Laele Demelin
Age: 20
Burliness: 2
Hardiness: 3
Flexibility: 4
Arcanity: 4
Chosen Zodiac Magic:
Gemini (Inquisitive Air Magics) Main Stat: Arcanity. Secondary Stat: Flexibility.

Laele was somewhat of a problem child, very intelligent but because of that intelligence she didn't learn how to put in real effort since she could coast by without it. This caused her to fail badly once she couldn't and she got kicked out of school because of it. Since then she got help with her autism and turned her life around graduating with high marks across the board. Because of this she wants to repay the city for helping her power through and because of the recent events she believes she can best do that in the police department.

Re: The Arcana Beat (QQ Version) (PLAYERS CHOSEN, CHECK OP)

The office is smokey and smells of tobacco, whiskey, and a strange whiff of iron. There's cops standing around eating donuts, chatting about cases, and very conspicuously trying to be humble in an arrogant sort of way. You're all just standing in a group, having been rounded up by a rather frighteningly large officer, waiting for when the Chief of Police calls you into his office for the introduction to the new Beat you're walking. Right as you see the big burly guy come out of the Chief's office, another rookie strides up and joins you, seemingly about to talk before being interrupted and lead into the chief's office.

Striding into the office with the others, you see the Chief sitting at his desk, chatting on the phone in a language you can't understand known only as Bureaucracy. You wait patiently for him to finish talking. After a short time he finally hangs up, turning to look at you and the other rookies. He gazes at you for a few uncomfortably long minutes before he speaks to you.

"Good gods you lot are mangy, ain't ya? A'right." The big man sighes and leans back. "Now then, I know you rookies are probably standing there thinkin' yer tough shit, yeah? Thinkin' you're top of the stats charts or what the fuck ever. Oh hey, we're walkin' The Arcana Beat! We're the baddest of the bad, fighting monsters that pop out of seemingly no where and can do weird shit like exploding. Well..." He reaches under the desk and pulls out a sheaf of papers about six inches thick. "That there? That's the medical bills we've been paying since this mess started. We only got two kinda stats for the Beat kiddos. And them's Injuries and Deaths."

"I'm tellin' you this so you won't take no stupid risks. Remember, there's only so many of ya rookies and so many officers out there walkin' the Arcana Beat. You get laid up in th' hospital for a month or more that's a month or more those things are facing one less officer on the field. You understand?" Ruttgart stares at your faces for a few minutes. Then he nods. "Yeah. You understand. Alright then. Now that I've deflated yer egos, I think it's high time y-"

There's a screaming siren and the chief just sighs. "Figgers. Errytime. Alright, listen rookies, I want you to get down to the armory on the double, get your standard equipment, and then just latch onto whatever group's heading towards the trouble. They'll show you the ropes. Now get lost. I got eight murder cases datin' back to twenty years ago to look over to see if'n it's worth hiring a necromancer to get more dirt on the situations or not."

So... What do?

[] Do as the chief says and go get armed. You saw those papers. These things are NOT to be messed with.
[] Eh fuck it. You're betting he just said that to scare you. Just go to the scene.
[] Stick around here and just chill.
[] Other (Write-in)

(As you can tell we're just gonna move right along here and get going with it. Don't worry, you can do character intros and development done on the way to the scene of the crime and so forth, I just want to get the ball rolling.)

[X] Do as the chief says and go get armed. Finally, an opportunity to shoot at a moving target!

Re: The Arcana Beat (QQ Version) (PLAYERS CHOSEN, CHECK OP)

[X] Do as the chief says and go get armed. Really if its some stupid hazing ritual then best just get it over with. If its real... well, that kind of speaks for itself, especially with the welcome speech the chief gave. Over the top as it was it did get its point across.

OoC: Also going to bed in like an hour and a half, hope that won't be a problem?

Re: The Arcana Beat (QQ Version) (PLAYERS CHOSEN, CHECK OP)

Then you might not want to use my write-in, maybe?

Down in the armory you see the quartermaster. A stern faced woman with a clipboard, there is no one on the force that even thinks about crossing her. Not smart to piss off the person who might hold your life in her hands after all. She glances up from the clipboard at all of you and narrows her eyes.
"Officer Doyle. Francine Doyle. I have your records here. As rookies you're not really allowed a large allotment of the equipment." Francine sniffs and pulls out a few items.

"This..." She holds up a rather thick length of wood with padding on one end. "Is your truncheon. It's quite blunt, quite heavy, and quite hard yet flexible. The perfect tool for bludgeoning things with armor or taking out normal, human perps. If it is damaged in the line of duty, don't worry about paying for it. All of the truncheons have a minor repair enchantment and can handle the little nicks and damages without much worry. Don't set them on fire though. You do that and your next three paychecks are mine, understood?" She says calmly, glaring at you all the while.

She puts some padded gear on the table.
"This is your armor. As you're up against magical beasts it's warded against all manner of minor magical nastiness along with the mundane things. Don't go pushing your luck though. They're basically just fancy bits of robe and will help you about as much against something like a fireball. As for armored bits? Well, it can deal with a knife but it won't stop a bullet or a crossbow bolt. So, again, don't push your luck. Same as the truncheons, minor repair effect, you do something that gets them completely busted you owe me your next five paychecks. These damn things are EXPENSIVE."

"Finally we come to this." She pulls out a fairly innocuous looking device and places it down carefully. "This is a stun wand. Good for five uses or until it gets broken, then we have to recharge it here at the station. It's magical in nature completely and totally so be careful with it. Don't know if these beasts can handle the electrical shocks from this or not but you never know. Libra magics are surprising like that." She looks down at the clipboard and ticks off all of the items she's put on the counter.

"Now then, if you're wanting anything else you'll have to put in a request or pay out of your own pocket for it. You get a small budget each since you're rookies, or you can just pool everything together in a sort of group fund. Don't recommend that though." Francine looks up quickly, pointing the pen at your group with a look that could freeze entire oceans. "Last squad I saw do that is currently getting nursed over at Shadley's Hospital For The Magically Ill. We've got a list of stuff over there that can be rented out to you rookies that isn't standard kit. Now sign these records please. I like to keep very good track of what's where and why."

She pushes some slips of paper forward, each having various items listed on them.

(Each of you has about $200 to work with for anything extra and I'll also be listing your spells apiece.
Oh, and you can talk to the other characters and such now. :U)

OccularOctorok as Artemas Debliam
Aries Type Magic
-Burning Hands (Fire, Offense, Melee, lights user's hands or melee weapon on fire, stronger than a ranged fire spell but riskier, great way to keep things warm)

Liam-don as Cain Davis
Libra Type Magic
-Sight (Air, Empowering, Raises Accuracy, Can be used to help spot things that wouldn't normally be seen, Can make people sensitive to light)

Scia as Nele Richter
Cancer Type Magic
-Dampening (Water, Supportive, Lowers Damage of Enemies, Hits enemies with strength sapping water, makes them wet.)

ShadowAngelBeta as Jormund "Jor" Mathuel
Capricorn Type Magic
-Clodtoss (Earth, Offense, Ranged, Throws clods of earth, can be sharp or blunt as user declares, hurts things.)

Items Available To Rookies:

$50: Field Knife- Useful for all sorts of things, a field knife is much like a swiss army knife except with an added mage light, small crystaline magic detector that goes blip when someone five miles away sneezes the wrong way, and is ultimately a utility tool that does not much else apart from a regular swiss army knife.

$30: Magical Rope Light- Useful for lighting up small areas and marking a small trail. You get about twenty meters of rope for this price.

$30: Patch-up Brand Healing Salve- Good for cuts and bruises but not much else. Can help in a pinch but it takes time to apply and it's usually better to leave healing to those with spells for it.

$200: Rookie Healthcare Plan Brand First-Aid Kit- Three salves, some bandages, and a few other essential tools for field based medical treatment, this seems like it should be standard kit for rookies. Given the unfortunate habit of rookies to end up hurting themselves worse while administering medical treatments proves exactly why it's not.

[X] Buying a Field Knife

OoC: How long does casting take? Can we move while casting if its an instant type or do we need to stop? And I assume we have MP or some equivalent that it drains?... :-[ I just realized you might be answering these in the next couple of updates so you can ignore them if that's the case.

(Casting is instantaneous unless otherwise stated, you can cast infinitely, again, unless otherwise stated, it's just that doing so might not always be your smartest plan, and feel free to ask questions. If they don't ruin things I might have planned chances are I'll answer. So no worries yo.)

Alright, thanks.

So, I'll assume from your answer that we can move and cast at the same time. What's the max range on my spell while still keeping its full effect? What's its max range period? How large is the clod that's thrown or is it a variable in size? If it is variable due I need to charge it up or is it still an instant type? Do we get to choose a spell when we "level up" or are we working on some other type of system? (I kind of want to get a couple of defensive spells soon so...)

Re: The Arcana Beat (QQ Version) (PLAYERS CHOSEN, CHECK OP)

(You can move and cast at the same time, though your aim might be just a touch off if it's a ranged spell. The max range while at full effect is basically until it hits something or falls apart, which, trust me, you're not gonna be fighting things from a big enough distance for that to matter as it'll always hit a tree or some poor schmuck's car first. Same applies to the max range. Until it hits something or falls apart. The clod is baseball size unless you state you want it larger or the dice rolls I use are particularly kind. You can't charge it up. You have to research or be taught spells. So ask around the office, the cops are usually willing to help their own if just because it means one more warm body between them and whatever's causing trouble this time.)

Alright, thanks again. I'll probably have more questions later but I'm good for now.

Re: The Arcana Beat (QQ Version) (PLAYERS CHOSEN, CHECK OP)

All of this gear is lame. Nothing to boost pyromancy. Lets just take the standard equipment and move on.

Re: The Arcana Beat (QQ Version) (PLAYERS CHOSEN, CHECK OP)

ooc: a question can I do healing spells or do they fall elsewhere?

Re: The Arcana Beat (QQ Version) (PLAYERS CHOSEN, CHECK OP)

(You can but again you'll have to learn how to cast them first. All supportive branches of magic have at least 1 healing spell in them.)

Re: The Arcana Beat (QQ Version) (PLAYERS CHOSEN, CHECK OP)

Patch-up Brand Healing Salve x3

I'd go for the first aid kit, but the description makes me think its effectiveness is roll based. ???

Can I cast Sight on someone else?
