So I was reading Stories You Just Gave Up On and noticed that I had something in common with Cambrian, wayne82444, and doomlord9 in that the first big fic I remember turned out to be utter shit when I came back to it years later.

Although in wayne's case I'd just like to say I'll still page through MaW every now and again.

So let's hear the stories, what was it and if bad how bad.

Chuunin Exam Day? My Immortal? Akren?

Let em' rip People!

Mine was a Naruto fic whose name I don't remember but it involved Naruto getting a doujutsu that let him place seals with his mind, had a "Super Special" OC give Naruto a Green Destiny expy and had a 5 girl harem in which none got any characterization.

Edit: Found the fic, https://www.fanfiction.net/s/4239018/1/Seals-of-Fate

I don't have any specifics because its been like 5 years since I started and my memory is pretty terrible.

But basically 90% of the stories with over 1000 reviews in the Naruto and Harry Potter fandoms on Fanfiction.net was how I was introduced to fanfiction. And most of them were filled with the cliches that will make me put a fic down from just reading the summary these days.

The Sailor Ranko series from BurgerBecky. So many good memories I try hard not to delve to deep into because they're just so bad now that I am more experienced in seeing what is good and bad in fanfiction.

Also, Chuunin Exam Day was pretty early on in my Naruto days and even now I can't say I hate it. It's pretty amusing at points so long as you ignore the horror aspects that show up when you peel back the thin film of satire from it.

I swear to god, if any of you mock me I will punch you through the internet. I started with Twilight fanfiction. Specifically, I ran into Bella/Alice lesbian romance and loved it. I branched out into Harry Potter after an absolutely humiliating name was changed and several bad attempts at fanfiction were deleted. From there, Naruto (even though I never watched the anime or read the manga) and just... Slowly worked my way into more and more fandoms. 90% of the stuff I read consists of movies or books or whatever that I've never actually touched. Never read a HP book, quit watching the movies after GoF, but I can tell you the exact timeline of events throughout the whole series bar the Half-Blood Prince. I have Naruto canon all in my head up until the Akitsu arc, barely watched the anime until the Chunin exams. I've never watched/played Fate/Stay Night, but it's one of my favorite fandoms. Haven't seen a single episode of Ranma or Sailor moon, have crossover fics between the two on my favorite's list.

So what was the first name you were known as? =3

Haha, no. The name dies with me. The second edition name was better, because nobody would ever guess what it meant without explicit details revealed. But the first name? Nope. I would almost rather stub a toe than tell another person.

This happens pretty much with all fics that have excellent plot but terrible everything else; the first time the former utterly captivates me, enough to overlook all the flaws. But if I come back to re-read it, I'll then already know the story, so I notice much more the awful stuff, which most of the time proves to be too much for me to bear. Thankfully, I began Touhou fics the likes of Imperfect Metamorphosis, which I still find superb.

There's Bella/Alice romance?

There's an entire forum dedicated to it.

You think I'm kidding? I'm not. An entire forum, built around that pairing.

EDIT; Found it. Bellice Heaven. This is another one of those pieces of my past that I'm never, ever going to admit to in polite society. Don't even try to guess which member I was.

I did mention I don't mind cliches, just that it was full of them, right? I actually still like Make a Wish too, just hard to read without seeing the cliches everywhere now.

My first big fic was either the above mentioned Make A Wish, or a Final Fantasy X SI called 2 Fallen Gods, and a Guardian Angel. I'm not entirely sure the FFX fic counts as a big fic though, it only has 55 favorites and 123 reviews, but then again the Final Fantasy X section isn't especially large either. I know I read that one first, since by the time I was enough into fanfiction to read MaW I'd realized that SI tend to be bad if they aren't humor, and then it is mixed results.

Also just for the record, I like Chunnin Exam Day, and I'm hoping now that Perfect Lionheart is back he will post the last chapter. I kind of doubt he will though, since people tend to be asses about him, and he is petty enough to not post the last chapter of a fic because of it. Even if I like his writing I realize he isn't a saint or anything, I just think he is no where near as bad as most people try to make him out to be.

I think I started with Evangelion fanfic:
  • Children of an Elder God
  • Shinji and Warhammer 40k
  • Some kind of Oh My Goddess crossover where Shinji roflstomps blah
Of those, only Children of an Elder God stands up to the test of time, IMO.

I'm pretty sure my first actual fanfiction that I read was Astrea Lake. It's a Strawberry Panic! prequel fic (yuri, of course) focusing on Kaname and Momomi in their second year at Spica. I found it on 4-chan, of all places (/u/, of course - the denizens were having another round of what I gathered was a recurring argument over whether one character had raped another) and it was ongoing when I stumbled across it.

There are several anime that I would not have watched if the author of this story hadn't started writing fics for them, and there is another author who is orders of magnitude better who I wouldn't have found if I hadn't joined those fandoms, so I can't say I regret it.

Nope. I would almost rather stub a toe than tell another person.
Almost?

You must really hate stubbing your toe.

It was a Naruto fic way back when. It was called fox hunt or something along those lines I think...it involved Naruto and a bunch of kitsune ladies trying to seduce him while shapeshifted as his female peers. That was the first chapter anyway, fuck if I can remember anything else though, and I'm pretty sure the author deleted it.

Way, way back in the day, my first Fanfics were Animorphs based. This was back in the early days of the web, before Fanfiction.net, back when the Animorphs books were still coming out twice a month. Hosted on poorly coded Geocities and Angelfire pages, written by tween and teens that had no idea how to write. The quality was execrable at best. A couple years back I found a stack of print out from this era of my life, and read through some of the fic again. None of it could be found on web via google. Lost works, I guess. Probably for the best.

Later I got into anime fanfic. I'd been watching anime my whole life, Dad got into it when he was stationed in Okinawa during the Vietnam War. But I didn't get into the fandom till the Ranma era hit. Binging through the RAAC, rec.arts.anime.creative, I found all kinds of wonderful things.

The first major, super long fic I read, the kind where you eagerly await updates and you reread older chapters between updates, was the works Jim Bader. Specifically A Tale of Two Wallets. If you've read this work, you know it doesn't quite stand the test of time. But it was amusing enough for me during my early teen years. I was... 13 maybe, when read his work. Still have copies in my offline archive of fic.

Honestly, the sex positive nature of Fanfic, along with it's fondness of same-sex pairings, probably went a long way to shaping my views later in life.

Same here.

Same here for this one, too. Ranma 1/2, Sailor Moon, Stargate, Buffy, Fate/Stay Night, Familiar of Zero, Worm, Evangelion, and more.

So long ago. I mean I was reading fanfic before I was looking at porn, and that was 14 years ago.

I read sailor moon lemons for the plot. x/

I read some significant portion of all sailor moon and Ranma fics that existed back then.

Though really I'm less ashamed of those then I am of reading the entirety of Piers Anthony's works. They might not be fanfic but they are very. ..fanfic like.

I read through Persona 3: Fairly English Story and absolutely loved it when I was like, 16, but when I came back to read it two years later I was utterly baffled as to how I liked it to begin with. The prose is dryer than the Sahara, the action is dull, the protagonist is a Mary Sue of legendary proportions, and the entire story is just trying so hard to be badass that it comes off as weirdly needy.

I was going to suggest 'the Rub' al Khali or the Atacama as an alternative to the Sahara, but they don't flow quite the same.

Thousand Shinji and it's sequel The Open Door. It felt pretty awesome when i first read, but now it's just meh. The four protagonists are pretentious Mary Sues, especially in sequel where they invades multiverses*.

*While some of them certainly deserves asskicking, many of them suffers because protagonists are a bunch of dicks.

I am honestly having a hard time remembering what was the first fanfic I got into. Like, I know some of the older ones and some I feel like I should remember, and some were amusing, but I got lost of them.

Fanfiction.net doesn't help too much since I kept using it as a sort of save-file whenever I found something that looked interesting, but didn't want to try reading right now. So I have a good deal of stuff in my favourite list that I never touched beyond a short look. One specific fanfic I remember from early on was Souls Entwined which was a pretty fun Teen Titans & Soul Reaver crossover. In hindsight, it Kind of just followed the Canon of the Teen Titans Cartoon with Raziel as an Addition, but it had some interesting and cool parts. And the shipping was pretty fun, just sad that it never updates any more.

Read all kinds of stuff and since I am relatively good at ignoring stuff that is weird, I can read stories without getting too annoyed if something is weird. Some stuff from early on is awesome like "I Do" from Innortal or "The Dark Lords of Nerima" while others is more "Okay". Curiously, I haven't really had anything where I look back and decide that my old taste was shit, maybe meh, but nothing more.

I don't remember the first fanfic I read, but it was probably Harry Potter. A lot of the stuff I read at the start was really bad, from what I remember, I just picked whatever had the highest wordcount and devoured it in a day. I also read a fair bit of Rosario+Vampire that was wholly terrible.

Pretty much everything I know about Ranma, Sailor Moon, and a handful of other series comes from fanfiction.

**EDIT**

Oh man, and Bleach fics. I read so much Bleach fanfiction that I started confusing fanon with things that actually occurred. "What the Eyes Can't See" was one of the first ones I ever read. Not really all that good, all things considered.

I swear to god, if any of you mock me I will punch you through the internet. I started with Twilight fanfiction.
There's actually some legitimately good Twilight fanfiction around.
Specifically, I ran into Bella/Alice lesbian romance and loved it.
Dude, Gay Girls are the best.

My first fanfic was a Danny Phantom/Ember fic. Looking back on it, it was pretty terrible. It had his parents ripping him up because he was a ghost, had Danny leave town and become some sort of motorcycle rideing dudething. Glad I got into better stuff.

First one I read was Shinji and 40K. It does not hold up well after the first few arcs (too much shark jumping).

After that I started pottering around on Tvtropes looking for other fics until I stumbled across SB.

I got into fandom via binging the Naruto manga when it was much, much shorter, and then typing "gaara" into a search engine (bing, not google) and discovering a world of slashfic. The first one was slash and future child fic, involving Naruto and Gaara's green-haired lovechild who was born through shenanigans too complex for my young brain. I jumped in feet first and never looked back.
