Plan how to do better next time, of course. Maybe Naruto has some ideas on how to get a PERMABAN from the library? We have been insulted, our pride shrewdly gored! Escalation, this calls for escalation!

... Or, ah, maybe it's better to lick our wounds like a good kitty after being tossed out by the scruff of our necks? Just remember to look adorable while doing so, in case anyone is looking. Yes. Therefore...

[X] Plan Bobs Beard

Our potential is so great, but we are so bad with it that it hurts.
I suppose it hurts if you're jonesing to play a hyper-competent or otherwise badass MC, but I'd say it feels great: Too often fics have people that are highly advantaged (which is fine)... but who do not act like people. They do not get tired of boring repetitive effort-intensive stuff, they don't lose their focus when trying to grind away at stuff for hours and hours, they don't brush off something they feel is beneath them, they don't cheat on their fitness commitments and just take a day off once in a blue moon... all that.

In this regard MIO is excellent, as she comes prebuilt as a person with a stupidly great advantage... and is still a person, rather than an inhumanly competent player character. She doesn't work as hard as she could because she doesn't have a clear, personally motivating reason to do so. She acts like a shit to people because she's a kid who is used to being better than others/needing less effort.

But yes, it's certainly a thing to look at for those concerned about combat efficacy down the line.
Hopefully the massacre is a kick in the pants
Could be - or like Chibi said earlier, could go the other way and make MIO go 'fuck this, fuck that, fuck everything' and just stop trying completely - which, again, is a pretty reasonable reaction to 'surprise, every relative and family member you know is dead, and you just got tortured or near-fatally injured by a dude just a few years farther along his ninja bullshit'. Kinda traumatic, that.

But really, I think that's kind of looking at things the wrong way, looking for 'a dangerous meta event' to become a motivator.

We know MIO's mind, and there's nothing stopping us from trying to give her in-character reasons to, if not necessarily try hard, to at least try harder.

For example, this recent Hinata-themed vote I threw up has the essence of this intent, from two - perhaps even three - fronts.
  1. Gai's Jojo posing was confirmed in-update as being an excellent workout, something MIO would get tired from relatively quickly (thus minimizing boredom risk from time constraints), and something she's actually interested/invested in, in that it's a way to be more eyecatching. That's a mix that should be more than conducive for an otherwise apathetic-about-effort child to put in some moxy. And, this is important, that's assuming a worst case scenario where MIO isn't also acquiring Jounin Taijutsu specialist sparring data from the peeping - just as the posing should be of interest, 'how my village's top punchy people punch' should similarly draw her attention.
  2. Between Gai's talk about his trick, tenketsu's involvement and the attempt to bring a Byakugan user along, it's hopeful that we'll at least get enough of an idea as to what Gai's doing that MIO can attempt replication. In and of itself, practicing any chakra technique seems to slowly build reserves over time - and I'd imagine that proves doubly true for practice of a technique that involves direct emission of one's chakra from the body, rather than molding it into a specific technique and letting it fly.
  3. And if we're lucky/my intuition is right, Gai's tenketsu-emission 'illusion' is what Neji was inspired by to work out the Vacuum Palm - and we're showing Gai's trick to a Hyuuga. Putting aside the fun that is [Exposing the Hyuuga to Vacuum Palm earlier]/[Getting Hinata to demonstrate her good sides earlier in life to her family]/[Giving the Hyuuga more cause to be all appreciative towards Gai and shit], the fact remains that Vacuum Palm does not require the Byakugan to effectively hit, as you'd just slapping people with Chakra masses at range rather than jamming chakra needles into specific, very small holes. As such, it's reasonable, if not assured to assume non-Hyuuga can learn the assorted Vacuum moves... which would, naturally, mean MIO could learn them too.
More efficient (and fun for their practitioner) workout routines - possibly also way more advanced (and similarly interesting) fighting styles to work on adapting to MIO's teeny-tiny body - upping her Chakra training on one, possibly two different fascinating fronts... or to put it in game terms:
  • CONDITIONING/ATHLETICISM+ (and possibly FIGHTING+)
  • CHAKRA CAPACITY/MOLDING+
  • TECHNIQUE: GET (possibly multiple times over with the Vacuum skill)
Sure, collectively that's nowhere close to enough based on our lofty PC standards, but it could be a fine start.

And really, as long as we keep nudging her a step or two forward as in-character opportunities reveal themselves, we should be fine... probably.

And if not, we do have 'fuck this I'm out' with the reverse Summon thing.

EDIT
DISCLAIMER: The above is generally presented on the assumption of at least some measure of success from a given vote, which is in no way guaranteed. Even the most reasonable plan or intentions can go awry due to unforeseen consequences or QM schaudenfreude, the two of which are often difficult to tell apart. Do not take this as a promise that the above will happen, only as confidence that it probably will happen to some extent or other.

Say Chibi-Reaper, are you going to be using movie/game/filler stuff at all in this setting, or will you be sticking to the manga's core canon?

I ask because wholly seperate of the fun worldbuilding stuff (Puppet cities, time travel seals, THE FURY SEAL in all its nuke-y glory, transdimensional priestesses, Rinnegan mutants and more) it's got a whole bunch of fun characters and technique options.

So really, I ask less for the big shit that's probably never going to matter to us, and more for the smaller, more pertinent things, like 'so since Sakura made explosive tag confetti in that one pre-ship movie, could MIO do so with practice?' or 'The big fat strong idiot twins, Fujin and Raijin exist', or any of that.

EDIT: Actually that'd be a very MIO way to try and survive the Massacre, if OOC; to use the Fury Seal as a M.A.D. style deterrent.
Mio: "Go ahead itachi, kill me, and with me your brother and the entire village. Maybe I'll even get you, too.'

Good to know, thanks.

You know Chibi-Reaper, I think I have to take exception to your earlier commentary about Sharingan, at least in part.
Honestly, you could just make them learn jutsu and steal them on demonstration in traditional Uchiha fashion, but the problem with stealing jutsu with the sharingan is that you learn them exactly as they're being used. When you stole the transformation technique it took you much longer than you will ever admit to force it to do anything but turn you into a duplicate of an academy teacher. Seriously, that crap went on long after the joke wore thin.

In order to do anything else with the basic transformation technique you effectively had to un and re learn it and you honestly feel that you wasted much more time on it than if you'd just learned the technique from scratch and then altered it the way you eventually did.

This completely leaves aside the fact that you're left sitting on your ass and picking your nose until someone else learns the technique that you then have to un-and-re-learn after stealing.

.... Well, if you want to bother doing more with it than using it exactly as it's shown. Jutsu stealing isn't the perfect bloodline like the clan would have you insist, but if you're going to just grab a one-off jutsu to use like a thrown kunai and then ignore forever, or steal so many hundreds of techniques that you have a pretty good one for just about any situation, then it's still all right.

Just not so good for training. None of the exercising your own ninja magic with failed attempts, and it'll probably take other students your age longer than a single all-nighter to get an E-rank trick like the pencil sharpener down.
Here, this blurb used Transformation as an example of a particular failing of the Sharingan: the way it can retard proper skill cultivation in exchange for instant learning.

While I don't begrudge the example as accurate, I don't think it addresses a huge point for all Sharingan-based-Training considerations.

Namely, the Sharingan, copies/memorizes what it sees... and the example you gave was of a technique that normally wouldn't be visible to its user.

I posit that the Sharingan are indeed handier to have than not, for training of Jutsu that are directly seen by their users. Your fireballs, lightning bolts water cannons, shimmering air shields, earth walls - primarily the elemental stuff that's the core of offensive Jutsu - all of those the Sharingan can help - at least for Mio. Because her eyes are near enough to always on, she's going to memorize and copy each rendition of a technique she uses. She'll recall, forever, exactly how bright this technique was, how it impacted the training ground, how fast it moved, if its flight path was straight or curved, all sorts of useful details. And this information, she'll accurately keep sorted - she'll actually be able to tell which of her thousands of pencil sharpening attempts was the fastest, for example, and can then use it as a reference for speed. Similarly, if she wanted to learn how to hook fireballs, she could cross reference the different mistakes that made fireballs curve this way and that for her - and do this with certainty she's not mixing things up.

Further, I don't see why this couldn't be applied to techniques that are picked up via Sharingan copying, so long as they still comply with the 'produce innately visually referenceable results'. Say, she copies how Itachi does a Fireball jutsu, and then afterwards starts making records of how the jutsu does when she twists her chakra like this, or changes her handsealing cadence like that every time she tries it by pure dint of always-on-Sharingan. With that, I'd argue that she'd be faster at honing that fireball jutsu, then an equivalent non-Sharingan kiddo who'd spent the time to regularly learn it up to the same level of competency she skipped to. Assisted learning in the form of unforgettable, perfect records is something that's been consistently proven advantageous in real-life, and I don't see why it wouldn't apply even here.

The Sharingan, if modestly, would seem to be an advantage to anyone that wants to master a given externally expressed jutsu, no matter the origin.

...This isn't relevant to Mio yet given that the only techniques in her library this would apply to are ones that are too boring to be worth the mental effort, but I felt it was important to bring up. Maybe it'll inspire someone to use chemistry and macguyverism alongside a recollection of what sorts of stuff was fun as shit as a kid, and figure out a way MIO could kitbash the firestarter technique into some sort of fire-punch jutsu. Maybe it'll make some TTGL fan with a backing in engineering show how the forces that have to be at work in the pencil shaving jutsu could be readily and easily scaled into a practical and lethal technique with minimal change in power demand. Who knows - a kid's passion to learn play can be a mighty force, if properly tapped.

BEHOLD:

I found a kid fem-Madara - that is, I found a MIO.

Sadly, the base drawing was already pixelated so I couldn't easily make more colorful renditions, but still.

Take it. All my joy goes to you, oh hirsurte one.

It had not crossed my mind until seeing little Miss Madara there, but the village was founded more or less 60 years ago.How many of the Uchiha elders remember that asshole of a clan leader?

And how much of the animosity of certain members of Mio steemed clan is not only roted on "She ie wasting her gifts laying around like a Nara." but also on "She looks just like Madara, has maybe comparable level of talent. and it is wasting it."

Ofc looking like a mini (part of)the reason your clan was shafted by the second cant have done her any favors.

So they decide to treat her in a way that makes "Itachi you kill-stealing asshole" a sentence which could come out of her mouth?
It's just the usual uptight Uchiha behavior at lack of dignity (normal trick to make villains sympathetic that Kishi uses: make their childhood unpleasant). The only surprising thing is that she was allowed to be alone to develop eccentricity at all and is currently not being trained within a inch of her life till she drops half-dead by a clan jonin every day which is the usual fate of sharingan children, seems like dignity thumps the sharingan. Since she wasn't even shown their stupid firebreathing trick, i think it's obvious they would prefer she wasn't even i the academy or something.

Pretty sure they were the ones who actually forced Mio to join. Since she mentions in the beginning that there was pressure on her as soon as her Mom died. Otherwise, Mio probably would have fucked off and did her own thing.

Something about Sharingan and automatically being a ninja or a cop.

Have you, uh, read Sasuke's flashbacks?

Sasuke didn't have it until the clan died. Unless you're meaning something in this story i forgot about? Sorry it's been a while and tens of naruto stories since i read the early chapters.
Ah, so you're talking about the training of Uchiha with activated Sharingan. We don't see any of that other than Itachi, who seems to do more private training than anything. His pressure is more from being:
  1. The whole rebellion thing, a central pawn for both sides
  2. Fucking genius
  3. Clan heir
all wrapped up into one teenager-sized package. As such, his situation cannot compare to other Sharingan'd youths. You can try, of course, but don't expect it to be anything other than fanon.
Plus, while he was recieving pressure, it's not nearly so much as being trained within a inch of his life till he drops half-dead by a clan jonin every day, because that, frankly, gives me this impression.

I'm pretty sure the Sharingan ( or rather, the ability to do the 'great fireball release' and thus attainable very easily with a Sharingan ) is the main requirement to be considered a adult to the clan.

Thus my saying that the only other confirmed example of a activated sharingan child being rushed and over-trained while the spare heir was left by himself at equivalent ages begging for training from his big brother makes me conclude that it's strange how they're not investing in this girl. There is no edge here sir and i resent that /img.

I can even give a political rationale besides they being sticks-in-the-mud: it would look bad for this girl to overshadow Sasuke.

And then MIO started skulking around trying to yoink the secrets of Gokakyu no jutsu by catching sight of it.

It's a decent motivation if its brought to her attention. Especially if we remember that sasuke is the first of class even before the Massacre. After... well hopefully she's punching gigantic crabs with shrimps.

I really really want Gai illusions though.

What if Mio was actually incapable of deactivating her Sharingan, rather than just never needing or wanting to unless she suspected she'd see something one would wish to forget?

There are 3 examples of characters who mantain their Sharingan on almost all the time. Tobi, Itachi-nukenin and Kakashi. Kakashi is the only one that seems to struggle because he's not Uchiha maybe.
I'm especially suspicious of Itachi doing it since he's said to not have large reserves at the beginning so it sounds like a exercise he does (he can't really do strenuous physical exercise due to his disease).

I think it probably works as a chakra exercise until sleep; until some point on her development where her chakra molding (ying + yang) replacement rate just exceeds the amount that it takes to maintain it.
Either she recovers chakra used faster than normal people (molding) or she has reserves large enough that she doesn't notice the drain during the day. Maybe both.

Itachi probably does this better than she ever will by directing more chakra to his eyes when he gets comfortable *grumble*...

Mio actually did mention that she eventually learned how to turn it off when she wanted. But that it was akin to having Alzhiermers by then. So she keeps it on unless she feels like she'll regret remembering something.

Yeah, I was asking 'what if her chakra system had developed in such a warped fashion due to the constant drain from it that the mechanism for her sharingan to deactivate is conspicuously absent', though.

Though as a corresponding effect, perhaps her sharingan itself would develop to be more efficient/effective than any other basic sharingan in that case. :p

Ahh well, that's AU speculation.

...I wonder who in the world can claim to be best liked by MIO and be right.

I'm getting paranoid about Maito Gai illusions... they register as real to the sharingan and byugakan... what if Maito is actually a genius not only of hard work and figured out a way to use yin-yang release and then reabsorb it?

He's creating a mini-sun and ocean every time E=mc2
