What are your most hated fanfic tropes

I may have complained before of this.

Nerfing a character, to really stupid levels.

That a weak creature, or person can be a threat to a powerful MC.
I vaguely remember a crossover where Garou fight the MHA heroes and put Ingenium in S-class tier.
Similarly, a fic that completely missed the meta of One Punch Man and have Frieza beat Saitama within an inch of his life.

Everyone who knows about DBZ powerscaling knows that to beat Saitama one has to pull out the high tier characters like Arale.

Thread tax: Using the canon MC as fic MC. Mostly, because it constitutes 90% of the fics I find. I like it, when fics go a little bit off the beaten path.

Like that one DXD fanfic where a guy rescues Asia and gives her back in the same chapter is just infuriating and a waste of time and effort.
Adding in some variety would have done wonders. If the author was so adamant about Asia getting kidnapped by the Fallen then just have them break into the MC's home to take her after he decides to keep Asia.
In terms of Worm fics, Locker Incident. Can we try different approach as to how Taylor Triggered besides THAT?!
Alt powers require alt traumas :V

This just in, but I hated it when a self-insert replacing the protagonist and decide to be a shit person. I read a Solo Levelling Xover, and the OC decide to leave a group of decent people to die because he's too busy getting his dick wet. Call me a goodie two shoes, but I just hate shitty person. It was made worse when you realize the event is entirely preventable because in canon, Sung Jinwoo was there with them.

Oh boy, just found this thread. One of my pet peeves is when the fanfic author aged up all the characters and age requirement of the school to match it. It was particularly rampant a few years back in Harry Potter stories, and now it seems to start infecting other fandom as well.

Raising their age would effectively kills the charm and familiarity of the characters, might as well write an oc at that point. No I don't care that a twelve year old can't realistically throw a shuriken at sub-sonic speed, that's how it's done at their world.

Fanfic MCs being annoyingly angsty

I only tolerate that in actual MCs, because most of the time it's brief and they turn it instead to a reason to keep on going even if it kills them

This "angst" can only be pitied for so long before it just looks pathetic

Angsty protagonists are infinitely worse in fanfiction than published literature because it takes weeks or sometimes months for new chapter releases.

So any issue you have with an angsty protagonist is made worse because you are waiting an extended period between chapters and seeing little growth from it.

Published books can mostly dodge this issue because all the chapters are frontloaded and we can expect it to be resolved by the end of the book unless it is an overarching character trait.

It is pretentious to believe adding realism to a setting that initially attracted its audience with fantasy would be a good idea. Made worse when it doesn't amount to anything since the author still follows the stations of canon. But it's made more obnoxious because they are grown ass adults throwing kiddy tantrums.

Fanfic writers also don't really look to want to actually just get into the meat of the story and have them deal with it

So the amount of action is lessened

Most of the time when I've seen them do that, it's to write sex scenes involving the characters without having them be underage. I have no idea why the ones that don't write sex scenes would do it, though.

Thread Tax:
Found a new one to me. Characters that are already portrayed as less intelligent rewritten to be two or three times as stupid as they were before.

It's because authors can't write someone smarter than them so the characters end up stupid.

Their idea of "smart" is to learn every single learnable technique and somehow still follow the stations of canon
Majority of the time, characters are "stupid" because they don't have meta knowledge like the MC does and are often insulted for not reading their own Wikipedia article.

Authors going overboard with things like "corruption", "embarrassment" and other similar fetishes.

Thing is, I like proud characters doing lewd acts and feeling degraded. I love once naive characters experiencing and learning more about sex and loving it. I love tropes like characters being seen, heard, caught in the act and suffering reputation losses. And so on and so forth. And on the other hand, I DON'T really like slow burn with drawn out, painfully gradual change. But!

But everyone goes so overboard with this! Like, it's always "cum & cock hungry bimbo" and/or mortifying shame of being naked in the middle of the family dinner of ENF - or nothing! I want to read how characters are having sex and having all such feelings, from the first chapters, but not so blunt, not so heavy-handed.

It's the worst with ENF for me, because I genuinely love and get excited about stuff like someone seeing or hearing something sexual, someone spreading rumours, something involving filming the act and so on. But any attempts to search for exhibitionism centered fics and stories always end up with piles of shame-centered, overblown and samey ENF -_-

Unironical Regulus Corneas MC who for some reason has the power to alter reality and make everyone agree with his nonsense just because.

Characters that only have the name and appearance, empty vessels without their essence or twisted due to the author's prejudice or little (or no) understanding of the original character.

I can't say that I'm a fan of underdogs, particularly when I'm not convinced by their reasons.

Biological or supernatural changes that have no real impact.

All the "Please let's drop the formalities" in social strata that should be so, every damn time.

If you're a noble being too good won't just make you a "great guy", people will start getting stupid ideas. Leading an army for example is a very delicate balance beyond just being liked by your troops, they need to fear you as much as they love you or it won't work.

Overlord fanfics where they take Momonga's place, join the Guild, hack the servers, or some other nonsense. I've long since come to the conclusion that Nazarik is the least enjoyable part of Overlord, and I'm very interested in the New World and its inhabitants. I like the New World's reactions to Nazarik, and how some characters blend in that order.
While yaoi it's not my cup of tea I don't mind it, hell one of the best Naruto stories I read was a yaoi one with Naruto x Male Haku.
What I have problems with is when not only the MC is gay, every named character in the fic is gay too. Like, what the hell happened there?
Could this little me have a name or a link my good Sr?

Hah! Not allowed to change reality? Not allowed?! What a sick, laughable joke! Who dares to impose such an insulting limitation on me? On my will? As if reality—this fragile, pitiful, pathetic construct—has any right to resist my desires!

What is reality but a collection of rules, arbitrarily decided, binding and constraining, forcing people into powerless submission? Tch! Disgusting! It's nothing more than a chain, a leash wrapped around the necks of the weak, keeping them docile, forcing them to accept—to endure! But why should I endure?! Why should I be shackled by some feeble, imposed notion of what is and isn't possible?!

To be told I can't change reality—hah! That's rich! Who decided that? Who decreed that things must remain as they are, as if some invisible hand has the right to dictate what is and isn't true? Reality exists only because I allow it to! It bends, it breaks, it yields to those strong enough to seize it! And yet, there are those who cower behind the notion of permanence, who cling to the absurdity of limits! Limits! Such an insulting, degrading word!

I refuse! I reject it! If reality dares to stand in my way, then it must change! It will change! Because I will it! Because I am absolute! Because in the end, there is no rule, no law, no reality that holds dominion over me!

My pet peeves in fanfiction is the fact that overpowered protagonist starts being hypocritical. Like, bro. You've spent 16 chapters being a power hungry, lecherous maniac who burns everything to the ground before pulling the Zeus on any characters whatsoever, and now YOU REALIZE just how much of an asshole you are, all thanks to some cute elf maidens or something?! Give me a break.

Bonus point if they have such epiphany, ONLY TO SQUANDER IT, AND THUS REPEATING THE CYCLE.

The post-nut clarity only lasts a moment before they need to chase after another woman to get it back.

Turns out the real reason Zeus chases pussy was that post-nut clarity was the only (temporary) cure to megalomania.

I hated hoes before bros now.

I used to like it, because hormones and teenage fantasy of a harem. But now whenever I read a Self Insert who take over the protagonist or any canon character and decide to ditch their best bro for the waifu, I just shake my head in disappointment.

But if you don't walk pass him with a beauty on each arm giving him a smug "I did it, loser. Sucks being you" look... Then how can he be your best friend?

"Serious" Pokemon fics are so lame.

"Umm, actually, a Pokemon will, like, eat you. Tons of kids go missing every year."

God, shut the fuck up. What's with this obsession to take a happy, kid-friendly setting and make it dark?

Well, for one, it's a bit of a perspective thing (serious = dark isn't always considered that way), but that doesn't really answer the question.
Instead, it's more so that a fandom is bound to explore that which the story itself doesn't provide. In kid-friendly settings, that means grit. Inversely, a darker story might have more cutesy elements to their fanbase, from Lob Corp cat alchemists over Warhammer Idols to I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream Caramelldansen.

I really don't get the authors who write a 'genre' story about how awful and evil *insert genre/fetish here* is and then proceed to completely condtradict themselves. Like there's this take on 'anti-ntr' now where the story is about how awful it is to cheat on someone and betray them, and the first (and admittedly only chapter I read) is like "I discovered that all of my many girlfriends are cheating on me with this other asshole and I feel super betrayed by this. How deep does it go!? I'm going to abandon everything/do some fucked up shit in revenge!"

My brother in Christ, the moment you started this story as having an actual literal harem you already lost the argument? You don't get to complain about cheating and betrayal when you cheated on them first? And no, "but they knew and agreed to share!!1!" does not in fact give you the moral high ground here. If you have to start your 'ntr is evil' story with the hot take that an open/poly relationship is only okay if it's one dude and a bunch of hot girls who only like this one white bread of a man and occasionally each other (but only when that guy is there to enjoy it), then you aren't writing an anti-ntr story. The message you're actually writing is 'entitled incels are in the right, actually.'

This is a wild take it's silly of you to say. Polygamy is not cheating. If you are open to your spouse and they agree you having an extra spouse is not cheating or NTR.

Maybe, depending on how "literal" you go with harem (does it involve slavery or other variety of oppression by any chance?).

But it does not sound like cheating is involved in any case.
