With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

And triggered by something as simple as a magic word. I would hope it's dependent on intent, as later versions of Captain Marvel's word of power did, or they'd have some trouble from a slight slip of the tongue...

Especially his n52 self, seeing as his name is Shazam, due to the legal battles with Marvel.

Never mind the fact they're probably not old enough to be in here legally? I mean, they're probably college-age here, but still...

Ehh, some bars may let underage people in them ,but not serve them any alcohol, or the drinking laws are different on Earth 16 America.

Ah, brothers. A dubious joy I've not had the fortune of experiencing, alas...

I've had the joy of a sister.

It's a mixed blessing.

...And neither of you found that a little suspicious after the fact? Ah, superheroes...

Now be fair, that's not something that's only a superhero thing.

I'm guessing they're recently contracted here... Given Grayven's aggressive approach to welcoming new Lords, I'm not surprised these two are are taking a hands-off approach.

They did have such an approach in the comics, so they may not be afraid of renegade.

And he may not try to harm them out of hand.

The ones he did harm or kill had done something horrible so he had reason to do what he did.

Meeting Constantine is probably not the best thing for anyone.

I think that paragon knows about two Lords that synchronized their powers, but he may not know about these two.

Yes I think I misremembered; Paragon mentions Shazam and Oggar when Constantine is having trouble adjusting, not T'Charr and Terataya.

I hope Paragon encounters Hawk and Dove at some point too, though. I always had a soft spot for Don Hall, even though I mostly know him from one episode of JLU.

Actually I just looked it up and Hawk and Dove's patrons are mentioned by John Quinn as an example of Order-Chaos synthesis, but he doesn't mention the Hawk and Dove empowerment, and this was during their planned infiltration of Hell so I imagine there wasn't much follow-up from Paragon or anyone afterwards. Still, Quinn could conceivably track them down at some point. Edit: Quinn apparently gets the information from Nabu's notes, so Renegade can theoretically access them as well.

Being empowered by a Lord of Order/Chaos does seem to be a loophole in the whole cosmic balance thing, since Captain Marvel and Nabu were active at the same time but the former never had a Chaotic counterpart (I don't think Black Adam counts, either the canon or WtR versions, but I guess you could argue that).

When did the Halls get empowered? Because I feel like the SIs would have tracked them down way before this, especially back when Nabu and Klarion were problems.
I hope the Paragon timeline versions met Constantine at some point, and it'll be a way to reintroduce him to the narrative.

Paragon knew the names of the Lords of Order and Chaos empowering them, I believe, so does Renegade not know or is he just pretending, to see what level of knowledge the Halls have?
They didn't get empowered in the SI timeline due to Constantine.

The Renegade remembered roughly what empowered them, and if you gave him a while to think about it then he might come up with T'Charr's name.

According to the article linked to at "Donny", it's triggered by saying the word, combined with either the state of being in danger or being needed to protect someone in danger. If neither of the latter states apply, saying the word, even with belief in the existence of the conditions being met, does not trigger the transformation. For that matter, the trigger still functions even if the speaker is unaware of the danger.

I haven't read any of the stories in which this might have come up, but this would presumably stop attempts to find out their secret identities by scaring them without actually meaning them harm.

Double space.
...a fallen foeman as he comes to stand...
...one of his friends out of the building.
Thank you, corrected.

Because Oggar didn't share his power. Him withdrawing his cooperation because Shazam was getting the lion's share of the credit was what led to their confrontation.

Hopefully your dad's a lawyer. Because a lawyer could have called your dad for you.

- In the canon origin, the Hall's father was a Judge.

- It's nice to see the original Hawk and Dove characters, and especially to see Don as more than the pathetic whining wimp Ditko and Giordano made him into because they didn't think an agent of Order (thinly veiled 'liberal') could be proactive in the pursuit of his goals and the defense of his family.

Hank blinks. "You mean half the damage, right? Because those guys-."

"No. You have super powers. This means that you must show better judgement than random drunken yokels because when you mess up the damage is much worse."
With great power comes great responsibility. Pity Uncle Ben never specified what definition of responsibility applied.

Was curious when these two were going to show up, ever since Paragon Constantine got the Helm. While they're a bit goofy here, Hawk and Dove are one of the better examples of Order and Chaos working together in DC. Hopefully getting to them early saves them the headaches they have later on, and their replacements.

Henry grins confidently as Sunset wraps a runic armlet around his upper right arm.

"Hey. Where you been all my life?"

Sunset turns to repeat the process on Donald, causing Henry to miss her rolling her eyes but enabling his brother to see it very easily.

"Wilson."

"Ah. Is 'Wilson' your boyfriend?"

"It's what Grayven decided to call my planet. Too tight?"

Donald shakes his head. "No, that's fine. How is this going to work?"

"You said that your clothes vanish when you transform. These-" She taps the main rune array. "-are essentially… 'Magic homing beacons'. Or magic mass spectrometers. Whether they go with your clothes or stay where they are, they'll be exposed to enough of the magic involved that I should be able to build a summoning array to put us in direct contact with your sponsor."

Both brothers nod. I've checked their school reports, and Donald was telling the truth. Just as he's a perfectly capable fighter, his brother is a perfectly capable thinker. A preference for direct measures doesn't mean that he can't reason or understand long words.

"So you're an alien chick."

Even if he happens to prefer short ones.

"No, I'm an alien pony."

Henry looks surprised for a moment, then grins and nods.

"Hey babe, I'm down for-.

"I literally transformed into a human when I came through a magic mirror. I'm naturally an equine quadruped."

I raise my eyebrows. Given the effort she went through… "Hexruped."

"Hm?" She blinks. "Oh. Yes." She checks her work and then stands well back out of the containment circle. "I wonder why the wings don't carry over into this shape?"

"Humans don't naturally come with wings any more than they come with horns. Maybe if…" I frown. "Could you shift the end point to Thanagar? That might work."

"Only if Thanagar was mystically active." She makes momentary eye contact with Henry and Donald. "Are you both ready?"

"Sure." / "Yeah."

Sunset lowers rune-encrusted goggles over her eyes. "Then go ahead."

"Hawk!" / "Dove!"

I frown. "Do you actually need to shout-?

An aura like a child's drawing of fire envelops Henry, while a simple blue-white band passes over Donald. Their costumes begin to appear, then in both cases the arcane effect stops, reverses, then shifts to the armlet.

"Huh?" Henry holds his arm out and stares at it. "That never happened before."

I stare at the light. "Looks like someone's not stupid. Sunset?"

Sunset gestures, and the lights float out of the circle to hover just in front of her.

"Huh. It should be easy enough to connect something to this."

"Good." I step forward and grab one with each hand. "Speak, outsiders."

"That wasn't what I-!"

"Ping."

The lights flow along the tron lines of my armour and my awareness… Stretches outside of my physical form, outside of my corporeal surroundings. It's a little like what happens when I use my abilities as a New God, only more… Profane. I can still feel my body, still see through my eyes… It's like hearing your name in a noisy room, or smelling a sudden scent of shit in a garden.

I haven't gone anywhere. But I'm experiencing… A white sky dotted with black stars. A barren floating island of translucent pink crystal.

And them. A giant green dragon is actually a good deal more mundane than I was expecting for… Either a Lord of Order or a Lord of Chaos. And… Its weirdly out of place necklace. I… Suppose it's no stranger than a helmet or a cat.

And then I look again and I see a face shown in relief, edges picked out by flames burning from an unidentifiable source, and a feminine figure made of fragments of blue glass. That's more like it.

"I am Grayven. Who am I talking to?" "I am Conquest."

The dragon lands on the floating crystal island, bending down so that its muzzle is just above me.

"I am T'Charr, Lord of Chaos."

"I assume that you know what I've done to every other Lord of Chaos I've encountered."

"They won't be missed."

"Not by me, and that's really all I care about. What are you doing?"

The dragon rears up slightly, perhaps trying to give the necklace a better view. The Lord of Order, presumably. It shimmers with the same blue/white light that Donald was glowing with.

"We are demonstrating the effectiveness of a partnership between Order and Chaos. The two brothers have different temperaments, and yet they work best together. They cover one another's weaknesses and complement one another's strengths."

"And you're just giving them power. You have no plans to come to Earth yourselves."

T'Charr nods. "And our having this compact with them will prevent other Lords entering your realm, just as if we were present in person."

I nod. "And that's all you're doing? No plan to possess them and walk around in their bodies? No plan to found some sort of cult to boost your exposure?"

The necklace… Someone shakes a head it doesn't have. "No. That would defeat the object of the exercise."

"And if they piggyback on your power to become Lords themselves?"

The dragon smiles. "Then there will be four who have learned the value of cooperation and collaboration, rather than just two."

"Alright, fine. But if you're lying, I will kill you both."

I open my hands, and my awareness of whatever I just experienced fades as the magic flames in my hands shoot across the room and envelop its owners. A moment later their… Truly horrible costumes appear on their bodies.

Sunset looks at me curiously. "Grayven?"

"Just had a word with their-." I turn to the Hall brothers. "Your sponsors. I believe that we can work together. Though my warning about making pacts with eldritch creatures still stands."

Donald nods. "That's-."

"Work together?!" Henry grins, his face mask not covering his chin at all. "You mean..?"

"How would you lads like a job this summer?"

Kinky bastard.

It is, but I doubt its safe in that department, what with the Seven Devils probably having more success and more cultists due to lack of Lanterns to kill them.

You killed four and enslaved another. They're right to be cautious.

Nice to know that just because a person is chaotic they can still be decent.

What about Nabu?

Unless they removed his status as a Lord and he's now just some super powerful order elemental?

Hey, if they can have awesome powers then their fashion is inconsequential.

How did Constantine prevent them from empowering these two paragon side?

Did he stop them deliberately or did they find his presence as enough to prove cooperation can work, like because a chaotic person is fighting for order by stopping chaotic people?

There was this comic in which Harley Quinn is a candidate for becoming a champion for both sides due to her chaotic nature but also because she fights for order, like in her Suicide Squad moments or some other such moments, though a Tamaranean servant is made champion at the end.

"Hey. Where you been all my life?"
Another planet, And if you don't stop playing around like a lovestruck colt, she'll go right back there. Honestly, does the man prefer to think with his lower head or what?

Sunset turns to repeat the process on Donald, causing Henry to miss her rolling her eyes but enabling his brother to see it very easily.

"Wilson."
I bet this is all too familiar a sight for Donnie. The clumsy pick-up lines, not the magical science, at least...

"Ah. Is 'Wilson' your boyfriend?"

"It's what Grayven decided to call my planet. Too tight?"
A pity that video is lost to the depths of the internet's trash-heap...

Now, the question is how will those sponsors take that? They're fairly easy-going for Lords, but having someone chasing them back to their home realm might be a bit offensive...

Both brothers nod. I've checked their school reports, and Donald was telling the truth. Just as he's a perfectly capable fighter, his brother is a perfectly capable thinker. A preference for direct measures doesn't mean that he can't reason or understand long words.

"So you're an alien chick."
Ah, Hank. Hoping to follow in the footsteps of many a sci-fi hero captain and score some space babes? Unfortunately, you're too anthropomorphic for her tastes...

Even if he happens to prefer short ones.

"No, I'm an alien pony."
Now, to be fair, while true, that sounds like total sarcasm...

Henry looks surprised for a moment, then grins and nods.

"Hey babe, I'm down for-.

"I literally transformed into a human when I came through a magic mirror. I'm naturally equine quadruped."
And I doubt even Hank is down for non-humanoids. Pity, some fans would kill for the chance...

I raise my eyebrows. Given the effort she went through… "Hexruped."

"Hm?" She blinks. "Oh. Yes." She checks her work and then stands well back out of the containment circle. "I wonder why the wings don't carry over into this shape?"
Same reason you didn't have a horn, after all. Even Luna will lack wings and horn when she eventually tries the mirror...

"Humans don't naturally come with wings any more than they come with horns. Maybe if…" I frown. "Could you shift the end point to Thanagar? That might work."

"Only if Thanagar was mystically active." She makes momentary eye contact with Henry and Donald. "Are you both ready?"
Hmm... Nth Metal could probably provide the magical horsepower needed... But that might get the attention of the Thanagarian Gods...

"Sure." / "Yeah."

Sunset lowers rune-encrusted goggles over her eyes. "Then go ahead."
Oooh, you know this is going to be fancy when they pull out the protective-slash-diagnostic eyewear.

"Hawk!" / "Dove!"

I frown. "Do you actually need to shout-?
It's the done thing with transformation phrases, really. The Marvel family all shout it, when given the chance... Guess it helps with the whole intent thing.

An aura like a child's drawing of fire envelops Henry, while a simple blue-white band passes over Donald. Their costumes begin to appear, then in both cases the arcane effect stops, reverses, then shifts to the armlet.

"Huh?" Henry holds his arm out and stares at it. "That never happened before."
 ...Did Grayven literally find them in that fight, just before they busted out the capes? Fortuitous timing.

I stare at the light. "Looks like someone's not stupid. Sunset?"

Sunset gestures, and the lights float out of the circle to hover just in front of her.
Still not enough for them to disconnect, though. I wonder if they actually could? Hmm... If they channeled enough power into the spell she's using, it would probably break.. explosively.

"Huh. It should be easy enough to connect something to this."

"Good." I step forward and grab one with each hand. "Speak, outsiders."
No wasting time on this one, huh, Grayven?

"That wasn't what I-!"

"Ping."
Even Mother Box is a little impressed at how foolish that was? Ah, Grayven...

The lights flow my the tron lines of my armour and my awareness… Stretches outside of my physical form, outside of my corporeal surroundings. It's a little like what happens when I use my abilities as a New God, only more… Profane. I haven't gone anywhere. But I'm experiencing… A white sky dotted with black stars. A barren floating island of translucent pink crystal.
Trippy. An astral connection, eh?

And them. A giant green dragon is actually a good deal more mundane than I was expecting for… Either a Lord of Order or a Lord of Chaos. And… Its weirdly out of place necklace. I… Suppose it's no stranger than a helmet or a cat.

And then I look again and I see a face shown in relief, edges pick out by flames burning from an unidentifiable source, and a feminine figure made of fragments of blue glass. That's more like it.
Hey, if you can be a Dragon, why would you not? It's physically powerful and mystically potent.

"I am Grayven. Who am I talking to?" "I am Conquest."

The dragon lands on the floating crystal island, bending down so that it's muzzle is just above me.

"I am T'Charr, Lord of Chaos."
Don't make a Smaug joke, Grayven. Or any kind of dragon-related joke, for that matter...

"I assume that you know what I've done to every other Lord of Chaos I've encountered."

"They won't be missed."
Even Chaos has standards, I see. Presumably he's a more considered fellow, rather than the wild mayhem the others favoured.

"Not by me, and that's really all I care about. What are you doing?"

The dragon rears up slightly, perhaps trying to give the necklace a better view. The Lord of Order, presumably. It shimmers with the same blue/white light that Donald was glowing with.
Interesting choice, using a focus that relies on another's wearing it. Presumably if she manifested on Earth, she'd work like Nabu did, through a mortal agent.

"We are demonstrating the effectiveness of a partnership between Order and Chaos. The two brothers have different temperaments, and yet they work best together. They cover one another's weaknesses and compliment one another's strengths."

"And you're just giving them power. You gave no plans to come to Earth yourselves."
He's not even questioning it, of course. Far safer to work at a remove, after all. Lessens the chance of getting stabbed with a knife that removes your power.

T'Charr nods. "And our having this compact with them will prevent other Lords entering your realm, just as if we were present in person."

I nod. "And that's all you're doing? No plan to possess them and walk around in their bodies? No plan to found some sort of cult to boost your exposure?"
Hardly necessary. If they were the sort to want that, they'd already have it elsewhere.

The necklace… Someone shakes a head it doesn't have. "No. That would defeat the object of the exercise."

"And if they piggyback on your power to become Lords themselves?"

The dragon smiles. "Then there will be four who have learn the value of cooperation and collaboration, rather than just two."
And that's what they really want, isn't it? They want to show they're right.

"Alright, fine. But if you're lying, I will kill you both."

I open my hands, and my awareness of whatever I just experienced fades as the magic flames in my hands shoots across the room and envelopes its owners. A moment later their… Truly horrible costumes appear on their bodies.
Hey, they were designed back in the fifties, Grayven. That was moderately stylish back then. And they at least look like superheroes.

Sunset looks at me curiously. "Grayven?"

"Just had a word with their-." I turn to the Hall brothers. "Your sponsors. I believe that we can work together. Though my warning about making pacts with eldritch creatures still stands."
Might also need to give them the talk about consuming energy fields bigger than their heads. Hell, give them the whole rundown on what not to do...

Donald nods. "That's-."

"Work together?!" Henry grins, his face mask not covering his chin at all. "You mean..?"

"How would you lads like a job this summer?"
More recruits for Grayven's sort-of army, eh? Two more warriors who will hopefully one day lead the fight to protect Earth from Darkseid...

Ah, Renegade-style Diplomacy. Fast, aggressive and with the implied threat of violence if you don't play nice. Good to see it worked with T'Charr and Terataya. And Grayven benefits by having no more itinerant Lords of Order or Chaos showing up in his backyard.

Godspeech!
"Huh. It should be easy enough to connect something to this."

"Good." I step forward and grab one with each hand. "Speak, outsiders."

Even Mother Box is a little impressed at how foolish that was? Ah, Grayven...

Truly when we think he has reached the end of his foolishness he can still surprise us.

Still it's less foolish then when he thought the Light was a good idea in improving society, even though they have the morality and ethics of a frat house, albeit less sexist and xenophobic, and thought that they were more than just a bunch of emotionally immature sociopaths that can make pick-up artists seem emotionally stable and healthy, and whose plans would probably lead to them becoming like the Fraternity from Wanted, with less advancement for society and more having a bunch or perverse and immature sociopaths running around with no one to stop them.

Hey, if you can be a Dragon, why would you not? It's physically powerful and mystically potent.

Kaiba would be jealous.

Even Chaos has standards, I see. Presumably he's a more considered fellow, rather than the wild mayhem the others favoured.

Or just the evil.

Mordru wasn't like the others in causing random destruction, but he was still an evil, sick bastard.

Interesting choice, using a focus that relies on another's wearing it. Presumably if she manifested on Earth, she'd work like Nabu did, through a mortal agent.

Or have her own body, but the necklace keeps it there.

And that's what they really want, isn't it? They want to show they're right.

And presumably stop the conflicts between their sides.

But Light 2.0 is improving society? The EDF that they created has made defense of the Earth into a mass participation event rather than supers only clubhouse.

We always knew he found the originals morons and was going to purge them, but the underlying idea of giving humanity a kick to get out its funk was sound.

I'm naturally an equine quadruped."

Hexapod, I think. It's the difference between tetrapods (which have four limbs) and quadrupeds (which use four limbs for walking). Humans and most birds are not quadrupeds, though they are tetrapods, because they only use two of their four limbs for walking. So winged ponies would be quadrupedal examples of hexapods.

Of course, hexruped appears to be a neologism anyway, but I'm trying to base this off the existing construction of the terms for "has x limbs" versus "uses x limbs to walk," which are technically oversimplifications anyway... And that's as far as I really want to ponder biological etymology, especially as it relates to my little pony.

I am very much looking forward to Renegade encountering both the Thanagarian Seven Devils Cultists and the central government, possibly as part of his plans for an arcane interstellar network with Earth and Zerox and others (possibly Mars and Euphorix too). I assume the Justice League Hawks have been sending reports back home about him so I'm curious about any possible responses they may have.

That would show better diction, but this is Henry.
No, his parents were married.

Gosh no. He'd love to dump his position on someone else, or at least get some help from these two. Unfortunately, neither of them have been to Earth before and since the other Lords don't like to talk about them, he hasn't heard of them.

You are correct and Grayven is wrong. Sunset just didn't care enough to correct him.

"How would you lads like a job this summer?"

It is about time Grayven Superhero Team becomes active again.

It's adorable that you think you actually can.

New God, he actually can.

Lords of Order and or Chaos are lower in power that New Gods is just that New Gods are usually seen fighting FREAKING SUPERMAN that's why they look weak.

Granted a Lord of Chaos or Order can be quite powerful... with enough preparation but that's the usual "A Wizard beats anyone with enough resources and time" thing.
