With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

"Almost every being has within them some contact with each of the lights. The network of strands which build up their nature, their desires. To make a lantern you must first learn to perceive them not as a series of strands but as the interface, the point at which the raw stuff of desire diffuses one way and the specificality of desire diffuses the other."

It's lines like these that makes me wish I could personally look at the characters' reactions in the story. It's just so suitably dramatic and awesome in the "invoking old magic" kind of way.

So Lanterns are...semi-permeable membranes, filtering the unspecified Light down to a form that the Rings can turn specific, purpose bound.

Not just wanting or needing but wanting or needing a shield for instance.

And they do this by being incredible precise themselves, using the contrast as the filter mechanism?

The Rings allow for that specification.

But they also need no AI to do so, no complex guidance mechanism.

What is the part of the mind that condences vague desire into concrete goals?

Could it be that the Rings are constructed from pure awareness of a certain colour? The act of simply observing a light without being part if it? Similar to that excercise were they detached from desire while still aware of it...

If that's the case, then the reason Paul and Malovio fail may be that they are too close to their Lights.

No, doff is correct. It's the opposite of don, to take off rather than putting on. Survived longest in regular use in the expression "doffed his cap", although even that is pretty archaic (as is the gesture it describes, actually).

That should say 'at'.
Thank you, corrected.
No, 'don' would mean 'put on'. He's taking it off.
Thank you, corrected.
No, that's correct.
This is about the point where we should expect Malvolio to suddenly summon Ion, now that he knows that it will probably help him make more rings. Or at least strain something in the effort of attempting to.
He doesn't actually know that Ion exists.

"I will to in a position of power ere they do or not."
I'm... not quite sure if it's an artifact of his accent/speech patterns, but it just feels like there's a word missing somewhere in there.
"And I may treat with ambassadors and I may in the fullness of time make such strategic alliances as are convenient to me. But such is not our purpose here."
Might need a comma between "ambassadors, and", though it also just seems a bit weird how he used "And I may" twice in the same sentence. Again, might just be due to his speech patterns.
"I see. Lantern Onik?"

"You made a personal lantern."

"Y-es, that-."

"You made a personal lantern you made a personal lantern you made a…"
So, how quickly is his voice climbing octaves? The unwritten 'squee!' transcends the medium.

He doesn't actually know that Ion exists.
Paul just mentioned the Ophidian, specifically putting it forth as his reason for his quick advancement in the use of orange light. Malvolio could simply choose to ignore Paul's mention of this unknown entity, putting it in the back of his mind as one of Paul's ramblings, or he might choose to be polite, and never bring it up again, and instead allow Paul to ramble about something else. But if he does enquire further, Paul will tell him that it is a spirit that acts as the chief governor of orange light. Naturally, Malvolio will wonder if there is an equivalent being that governs green light. And then he will learn that Ion exists. If Paul gives him enough background on this, Malvolio will even learn that it's not that hard to create a connection with such beings. Assuming Ion cares to answer, or hasn't had his locks tightened. Of course, Paul could also choose to never mention the entities ever again in front of Malvolio, which would be the least chaotic choice.

"Lord Malvolio, permit me to introduce Lantern Xor, Lantern Dul and Lantern Onik."

Despite Malvolio's size, Xor is still quite a bit larger than him. Neither of them seem particularly concerned about their physical size; Malvolio is perfectly confident that his will and ring-power would be sufficient in any fight and Xor is perfectly used to being around smaller people. Dul on the other hand is clearly more interested in the giant personal lantern while Onik can't decide what he's more interested in.
I bet Onik has so many questions right now, never mind Dul or Xor... Funny, though, here I thought Malvolio was over ten feet tall. But then, none of the pics I've seen of him have any regular humans for scale. He's simply been described as 'large' which could be anywhere from six and a half to ten or more... Guess he fits closer to eight (about 2 and a half meters, metric.)

"I greet you. I am Lord Malvolio of the Green Flame, sovereign lord of the region of space you know as Sector sixteen thirty four and the ruler of its people."

Dul's eyes narrow slightly. "I didn't think that Green Lanterns were allowed to rule entire Sectors."
They aren't even allowed to rule planets (edit: At least, becoming ruler after they gain a ring.) Still, play your cards right, Dul, and you might be able to make a good impression on the big man.

"I am not beholden to the Guardians of Oa. Nay, indeed, their agents are dispatched to act against me and dispute my will and rightful rule."

Ah…
Well, it's understandable. He's a rogue Spectrum-wielder who's laid claim to an entire Sector as his domain. I can't see the Guardians taking that lightly.

"You're not a part of the Green Lantern Corps."

"Indeed I am not."
I can practically hear the wheels of 'how can Thanagar profit from this' turning in her head...

"When you say 'act against me', do you mean that Green Lanterns are attacking your empire right now?"

"No, worry not. Priest confronted me ere I sojourned from mine place of imprisonment, but I dispatched him swiftly."
Oh, that doesn't sound good. And one more 'crime' for the Guardians to hold against him, too...

"'Dispatched' as in dead, or..?"

"He lives, disarmed and isolated. The love I bore him as mine tutor is such that e'en now, slaying him would not sit well with me. As for the rest, they have scouted mine domains and been instructed to leave by mine fleets. Matters have not yet escalated."
...Yet. I have the feeling the bobbleheads will somehow fuck this up. Probably send a Honour Guard-led taskforce in to bust heads and 'restore order'... And not tell them precisely what they'll be facing, unless Hal Jordan's involved. I suspect he'd at least brief any colleagues on matters.

"But you think that they will?"

"I will to in a position of power ere they do or not."
...Sometimes, his archaic speech gets real hard to understand. Though I suspect this has a typo in it or something... At any rate, I think he means 'I would, if I were they.'

"Fair enough. Any other questions for our host?"

"Are you recruiting?"
Looking to change colours, Dul? I know it's you. Onik wouldn't abandon his chosen path so easily, and Xor is too loyal to jump ship.

Lantern Dul barely waited for me to finish talking before asking the question. I frown, my eyes darting to Malvolio's hands. No second ring, but there's no reason why it wouldn't be somewhere else on his person. I can't imagine that he'd have sent it back to Oa, though I suppose that it's not beyond the realm of possibility that he let it go under the assumption that it would select someone in the Sector who was already loyal to him.

"I will anoint those amongst my men who I judge capable and worthy."
Presumably in much the same way Mogo does for the Green Lantern Corps...

"So don't bother posting advertisements in the Thanagarian Empire because they're never going to get it."

"No, but Thanagar would be happy to trade for the services of Lanterns."
It could be a trip, I don't think Thanagar is particularly close to Malvolio's holdings?

"And I may treat with ambassadors and I may in the fullness of time make such strategic alliances as are convenient to me. But such is not our purpose here."

"It's no secret that I can make personal lanterns. Lord Malvolio-" I gesture to his… I'm not sure what it qualifies as. Secondary Green Central Power Battery? Coterie Lantern? "-has rather surpassed my efforts to date, and neither of us have successfully made a ring. Since these are both learnable skills, that's what we'll be studying today."
Though I doubt the students will be attempting any practical exercises just yet...

"The creation of this Great Lantern took many weeks of dedicated effort. I am curious to observe your efforts."

I doff my armour and sit cross-legged on the floor, my eyes nearly closed but my empathic vision turned up all the way. Malvolio's presence is near-blinding, but I've gotten a better feel for the others during our time here and can easily… See where their desires integrate with mine.
Ah, things are about to get trippy, eh? I wonder what this looks like from the outside?

I also note that Lantern Xor as sat down and is studying me as carefully as he can. Yes, he's probably closest to be able to understand this.

"Almost every being has within them some contact with each of the lights. The network of strands which build up their nature, their desires. To make a lantern you must first learn to perceive them not as a series of strands but as the interface, the point at which the raw stuff of desire diffuses one way and the specificality of desire diffuses the other."
It'll probably be much easier with Enlightenment, since it gives him a much clearer picture of the emotional links.

I don't look at anyone else. I'm simply going to use my own, and my conscious connection to the Honden as what I manifest. I hold out my hands, the faint wire frame outline of a lantern appearing and the point already 'tied' to the orange light glowing just a little brighter. The point just above the core is at once a solid position in the lantern's structure and my desire to avoid nullity. A part of the handle my desire for camaraderie. And on and on until the structure is essentially solid, shimmering as not completely 'real', but still there in a way a normal construct is not.
Though it's likely not as fast as he's perceiving it to be here...

I managed that last time, though far more haphazardly than I'm doing now. But the bit I completely messed up is the bit that comes next; using the structure I've build to link the structure to the light itself, to the Honden itself.

From the incredibly specific to the non-specific. From me to all. And back again. The complexity of the individual and the vastness of the Honden.
And now to spark the flame within the lantern...

It's shining, shimmering, being at once in the material universe and outside it as the points marked by my manifested desires alter the laws of reality just enough to make that possible. I take a few moments to look oat it as it becomes self-sustaining and then fade back into the room.

Ring, time?
It's amazing how quickly time can pass when you're focused on something...

Hm. Reasonable.
About three and a half hours. I take it that was quick for him. Not doubt a Maltusian could do it a bit faster, but their detail work is probably a little weaker. The joy of hand-crafting single pieces versus more mass-produced copies...

Xor's eyes are glowing while Onik is staring with an expression which… That's religious ecstasy, isn't it? Dul is ignoring it in favour of watching Lord Malvolio. I can't tell what he's thinking, but I do get a small respectful nod as I emerge more fully from my trance.

The personal lantern… Looks good. Better than my first effort, at least. I take my current personal lantern out of subspace and set them side by side on the deck.
I am impressed they sat quietly through all that. Then again, given each's interest in the process...

Ring, how did I do?

No faults detected.

Ah. Well, Hinon's the expert and I'll have to have her give it a once-over, but I think I can be reasonably pleased with that.
Not bad. Better than the first one we saw you make as a demonstration for the rookies way back when.

Xor blinks, shaking his head.

"Illustres, I could not understand what you did."
Definitely looks like Enlightenment plays a strong part in matters, then. Xor is damn good, but if he couldn't follow...

"Lantern Dul?"

"My ring could see what you were doing with the construct power, but I couldn't get anything else."
Not surprising, she's never struck me as that concerned with the deeper esoterica of Spectrum usage.

"I see. Lantern Onik?"

"You made a personal lantern."
Hmm... What's that high-pitched squealing I can hear? Nearly ultrasonic...

"Y-es, that-."

"You made a personal lantern you made a personal lantern you made a…"
...Never mind, just Onik vibrating with joy as he fanboys...

"Lord Malvolio?"

"For how long have you wielded a ring?"
Feeling a sudden surge of inadequacy, milord?

"A little over two years."

"I required decades of instruction afore I could do so much."

"Bonding with the Ophidian gave me perspective that most mortals lack. So for the rest of you, here's what I did."
Heh. On the other hand, Malvolio, you had to work out the lantern from scratch and studying your own. OL has the advantage on knowing the specs for them, or at least fobbing that part off on his Ring's processors... Like working out a LEGO build from pictures versus building from a clear instruction manual.

Oh boy. Malvolio doesn't know about the Embodiments, does he? Wonder what his reaction will be to knowing there are 'great beasts' out there who so exemplify the Emotion of their colour that they are basically gods... And then how soon until he pokes Ion? Hmm... Let's hope that he understands they're sapient beings to be respected... Or he might end up getting a smackdown from the big green space whale.

My interpretation was basically the exact opposite: to create a lantern is sort of like using sympathetic magic, in that the part is the whole. A single specific desire is also a manifestation of the raw generic desire that is the orange light. And that light is non-spatially bounded. So that specific desire can in turn be used as a window through which raw light can shine. But windows are fragile unless you surround them with sturdy construction.

Or in other words, the real key is to stop treating an orange light projection as a substance, and start treating it as a pathway.

I'm definitely picturing him as Gregor Clegane levels of tall.

They aren't even allowed to rule planets

Actually they are.

One Green Lantern was the queen of her people, so it may be allowed for them to be both a Lantern and hold political power.

Though using the ring to overthrow the government, like Sinestro did, is frowned upon, gaining it through legitimate means like inheriting it or being elected to it may be something the Guardians accept.

The most the ring may be used for is for gaining popular support.

I think most people would like a hero as president.

I think they'd both do it quicker and much better given their experience.

Green Lanterns can rule planets. They just can't achieve that rule by use of ring empowered force.
I stand corrected. Still, doubt the Guardians are happy about Malvolio doing what he's doing...

Considering personal lanterns draw from the main power battery, hence Molvolio trying to set up his own network, I would assume it works something like that.

Yes, I'm not sure what that was supposed to be either. I'll change it.

Close-close, or close for a Lantern with a clear destination in mind?

Bear in mind that without an AI Malvolio doesn't have stellar navigtion assists. He flies between stars by picking a direction and flying towards it.

Considering that when they first met, The Lord here refereed to Paul as "wyrmling' I'm going to say that he's familiar with the embodiments as a concept. He knew without external information (Ring AI or other sources) just looking at Paul that he's connected to the Besk Snek.

Even if Ion has less freedom under the Guardians, she was trapped for most of her history with the Gnat. Though at this point they've got a much better deal with the OLC.

Oh yeah. LM did call Paul a wyrmling. So he is probably aware of Ophidian, at least.
Or maybe when he tried to step out, Malvolio perceived him as a snake, as Paul did turn into one after dying and being sent to heaven.

He doesn't actually know that Ion exists.
I get the impression that the Lanternists don't, either, so him interacting with them probably won't lead to that information. I'm kind of expecting Guy to try to make Paragon promise not to tell Malvolio about Ion once he finds out about this; the Guardians likely already know.

Has a Maltusian ever hosted an Entity in the comics? I know Humans Are/Earth Is Special is in full effect for both Doylist and Watsonian reasons, but it's still not a good look that I can't think of any examples of them doing so.

the bit that comes next; using the structure
Colon instead of semicolon.

"I would strive for a position of power ere they do or not."
The word "ere" means "before" even in archaic English. You could argue he's saying that he intends to have power before they decide what to do, but "whether" would have already been in use at that point in history.

In a spiritual and philosophical sense of course.

Not a sexual sense.
I dunno, this is QQ.

Uhhh... Paul? You've made dozens of Orange Power Rings. You do that every time you assimilate someone into a construct Lantern.
