"That-."

"No weapons. Nothing that would provoke the Imperium from crushing the tau before I am finished."
I am somewhat wondering whether P'ol stealing space marine creation technology would be counted as such a provocation. As it's one of the things that's likely to happen basically the first time he fights a space marine company.
Is there much point in preventing the Imperium from getting provoked with advanced weapons designs if they're already getting provoked other ways? Also not sure if the Spirit of Eternity would share technology because it's operating on its own decision-making process(potentially more concerned with the warp eating the galaxy and wanting the Imperium crushed), or just doing so because UR-025 doesn't want weapons shared and they don't get along.

Not... Exactly. He has records of astartes physiology, and the tau have examples of mostly-intact astartes, but that doesn't grant him knowledge of the implantation process.

Honestly, UR-025 is more likely to share weapons with the tau than Spirit of Eternity is. Spirit of Eternity is a loyal servant of the Terran Federation, and once a human colony maps sufficiently close to 'Terran Federation' then it will open up a great deal. UR-025 just hates humans.

Yeah, but every apothecary does know how to do the implantation process, and he can convert them into constructs that retain their memories.

Hence why I think he'll figure it out shortly after the first time they send a large formation of space marines to a battlefield where he's present.

Yes, he... Could horribly violate someone's soul to learn how they make supersoldiers he has no need for. And which still have a substantial failure rate in the conversion process, render those subject to it sterile and so on. Does it get him anything that a battlesuit doesn't?

File received.

"-need to grow-." What exact-? Oh.

"Is that sufficient?"

Orange juice.

Chocolate.

Bacon.

I walk up to him and wrap my arms around his chassis.

"I love you, cold unfeeling robot man."

"A reference older than me. What a novelty."

Emperor, wake up, new (old) food just dropped!

Well, the Tau are considered provocative by the Imperium by their very existence. It's just that something gets in the way every time the Imperium (or anything else for that matter) decides the time has come to exterminate the Tau. Something that is usually considered more important than stomping the Tau.

I'm sure that when UR talks of not giving them something that would provoke the Imperium, he means not doing something that would make the Imperium decide squashing the Tau becomes a priority.

For a probably clumsy metaphor of how irrelevant they are . . . If there were a pool party where most of the factions were represented by the adults attending the party, the Tau would be some toddler wearing floaties and splashing about in a little inflatable kiddie pool because they aren't big enough to play in the real pool. Oh, and they're being ignored because everyone else is drunkenly knife fighting after someone shit in the pool.

Honestly, were it me I wouldn't have even bothered trying to help the Tau. It would just feel like a waste of time to even try. But I'm me and the various incarnations of Paul are, well, not me. So it's only natural that I'd do things differently than the various incarnations of Paul did were I in their shoes.

"By which I mean that I have seen thousand of minor alien civilisations arise, prosper for a time and then been cast down. Usually by humans." His head rotates to glare at Gremlin for a moment before turning back. "Or orks. The eldar seldom bother with total extermination. The tyranids are new. Their deeds are not."

I raise my eyebrows interrogatively. "Are you asking for something? Making some sort of point?"

"You believe that your philosophy makes you different. Your ideal of universal service to the betterment of all. It is unusual, but it is not new. Even less idealistic interspecies alliances have occurred before. They died."

Tsau'm nods. "Can you tell us why?"

"There was seldom any one great flaw. Always, there was something empowering about them. The weak do not reach the stars. Always, there were things which they could have done better. None appreciated what they would face, or how little their sacrifices would matter."

"No." I jab my right forefinger in his direction. "Of all the parts of human history we're bringing back, we're leaving emo in the scrapheap of history where it belongs. Nothing lasts forever, everything dies, but life can be beautiful and wonderful for as long as it lasts and that's worth striving for, miserybot. Now, do you want me to take you back, or are you going to make yourself useful?"
Ah! But they mind control their people.

You realize the end result of the Tau duplicating a Space Marine would be the Imperium sending EVERYTHING to absolutely obliterate the Tau from the face of the universe?

Ah! But they mind control their people.

It depends on the edition, and frankly that doesn't change what he just said. Just lookin' to complain as always, my beloved contrarian. Speaking of, do you know tactic on SB? You'd get along like a house on fire.

Provoke into. Maybe. English isn't my first language.
Thank you, corrected.
Wonder when we'll get the next Ancestor chapter. I think that's the storyline I like best.
Not for a while. I can't really think of anything that maintains the format.

Who could you meaningfully help on that scale?

Given what happened after 6th Edition, probably just Abbadon.

No, the mind control has been a thing in every edition.

Who could you meaningfully help on that scale?
Belisarius Cawl, the guy who would be perfectly happy to accept the help of someone with a power ring if it meant accomplishing his Emperor given mission.

No, the mind control has been a thing in every edition.

Lol no it hasn't, it's been influence in some editions and in the second edition I'm pretty sure it doesn't exist at all.

Belisarius Cawl, the guy who would be perfectly happy to accept the help of someone with a power ring if it meant accomplishing his Emperor given mission.

Cawl didn't help other than throw more space marines at the problem. Bringing back Guilliman is kind of helping, but he (Guilliman) is just one guy and he's not doing that much compared to how huge the imperium is, it's just too calcified. If it didn't have plot armor we'd have 30 Imperiums all claiming to be the real one at this point.

Literally already discussed in this thread, it's always been a thing, the only point of contention in editions has been how it's done.

Primaris Space Marines are to Space Marines what Space Marines are to Humans.

That aside, you're ignoring that he introduced a bunch of new technology along side those Primaris Space Marines.

You're also just waving away everything Guilliman did to reorganize the Imperium into an effective force.

So you're basically just ignoring everything I said regarding the tau, and also ignoring how ridiculously huge the imperium is. Cawl came up with a million super marines after 10k years, a million marines could not clean up a hive world for more than a week. There are trillions of people on Mars alone, let alone the quadrillions on hive worlds.

Barring plot armor, both his and Bobby G's improvements are irrelevant

I close my eyes and bow my head, scanning our destination.

"Grateful as I am to have been taken into your confidence, Remy, I was hoping that you'd be prepared to give me a slightly more thorough briefing before we arrive."

"You don' need one. Ain't hard."

"The more I know about what's going on, the better I can help you. Please."

His eyes dip, though that's probably to check on the Blackbird's instruments rather than out of any sort of doubt.

"Mah brother done got his fool self caught bah d' Assassins. They wan' me in exchange."

"The Assassins, as in a group called 'The Assassins'?"

He glances my way for a moment. "It mattuh?"

"If they're a group of thugs who call themselves 'The Assassins' to sound scary, that's one thing. If they're actual professional killers for hire, that's quite another."

He snorts. "You wan' me turn this 'ere thing around?"

"Not where I was going with that. My thoughts were that if they are in fact lower case 'a' assassins, it might be helpful if we could notify the police about their location. Or the F.B.I., or if we're really desperate, S.H.I.E.L.D.."

"Dat ain' too smart. We got dis ritual. Every ten years, we offah a tithe to a woman called X-Ternal. She lakh wha' she get, she give us power."

"'Power' meaning..?"

He takes his left hand off the control column and makes a pinching gesture, the dust in the air crackling and bursting as he empowers it.

Oh.

"Can anyone get in on that action? Because swinging back here once a decade with a pile of cash is no effort at all."

"You wan' mo' power?"

"If all I have to do is pay-." I frown. "What..? Does she just wave her hands and you get a random pull, or can you ask for specific things?"

"You get what cha get. An' if she don' lahk wha' you give her… Den bad t'ings happen. Ya tinkin' 'bout Rogue?"

"If a power-granting genie could give her power an 'off' switch, that would have been simpler than beating up a green-skinned Chinese warlord and stealing his rings."

"Ain' dat simple. An' X-Ternal don' stick aroun' for no show-an'-tell."

"Well… If we run into her, I'll try asking once you're finished up. How about that?"

He smiles. "Lemme an' Bobby get twen'y feet clear and dat's jus' fahn." His smile fades. "The Assassins, yeah, dey kill people. Good at it, too."

"Hm. Right. And does tithe payment result in the other party to your agreement getting less?"

"It don'-." He stops, frowning. "How ole' you tink ah am?"

"I.. was guessing mid-twenties?"

He nods. "I remember las' tahm. Ah left aftuh, when we didn't make payment an' Ol-yay paid da price."

"Which was?"

"He ded. She wave her hands, and… Poof."

Hm. That suggests that if someone isn't physically present, then they're fine. And even if that wasn't how it worked, then if she could call me from any distance to demand her payment, then I could just pay her then. And throw in extra for her trouble. I mean, once a decade isn't exactly taxing-.

"How much is the tithe supposed to be? I mean, 'tithe' implies a percentage of income, so do you submit accounts..? Or what?"

"Y'all gettin' way too int'rested. How 'bout ya'll leave the creepy swamp alone, huh? Ah don' wanna have t'tell Rogue her hubby ain't comin' back."

"Alright, alright. Assassins. I assume they have a base in the swamp?"

"Uh-huh. We headin' dere now."

"And other than active assassins, will anyone else be there? Children, non-combatant supporters, that sort of thing?"

"Shouldn' be. Dey awl stay home. Least, dat's how we do it our end."

I nod. I mean…

"So how much do you like this woman? You said 'crazy ex-girlfriend' rather than 'some girl I knew', so I assume you're not neutral on the subject of her wellbeing."

"She made her choice, ah made mine." He shrugs. "How it goes."

"When you got out, you asked her to leave with you?" He nods, an air of regret settling on his features. "Do you want her to leave with you now?"

"Dat ain't on da cards."

"Do you want your brother to leave with you? Any other family members? Ex-girlfriends? Pets?" … "Noteworthy trees..?"

"Nah. He in fo' life." I raise my eyebrows. "Guess it don' hurt t'ask."

"No, I think it could this time. But you should anyway."

"Why you care dey kill people?"

"Well… He's your brother. I'm following your lead. But if they're all a bunch of unrepentant serial killers… A person in my position might consider just… Going in shooting. Detecting their locations in advance, using high-powered railgun rounds to shoot them through the walls and ceilings. Naturally, if you want to take this opportunity-."

He glances my way, mildly perturbed. "You one col' fish, you know dat?"

"Because I accept killing the unrepentant serial killers holding your brother hostage, intending to kill him if you don't surrender yourself?" I shrug. "Police would do the same, just less well." I snort. "Double-time if they thought her powers came from the x-gene."

"Y'all think we get police out 're?"

"If we could link them to specific murders, yes? I mean, this isn't an obvious place for an order of genie-worshipping assassins to meet up. So?"

"We bein' recorded?"

"No."

"Den… Make mah life a whole mess easier." He sighs. "No. Jus' watch mah back."

"As you will."

We fly in silence for a few moments.

"You gon' do it anyways?"

"Not sure. I'll try acquiring information. If it turns out that any of them have done anything particularly notorious… Ah, I can come back later. See where they go when they leave."

"Not sure how the professor feel 'bout dat."

"I-."

"'specially from you. He like how diplomatic you are."

"I joined the team after killing two supervillains. Nearly got more. Wasn't entirely intentional, but… I don't regret it. Killing someone isn't my first choice and I don't want to ever do it just because I'm angry… But some people have it coming. Some people are just that bad."

"Guess dey best hope dey ain't dat bad."

I frown at him. "For assassins or in absolute terms?"

I'm a little surprised the X-Men haven't realized Paul is okay with killing someone if said someone is irredeemable and there's no downside to killing them. I kinda hope Logan likes the fact that if he's alone with Paul that neither of them will hesitate to do something like that if needed.

"Grateful as I am to have been taken into your confidence, Rembrandt, I was hoping that you'd be prepared to give me a slightly more thorough briefing before we arrive."

Is this Rembrandt supposed to be Gambit? Or is it someone I don't know? The conversation makes me think it's supposed to be him but I can't recall his accent being like this nor have I ever read his name like that and it has me confused; as far as I know his name isn't a diminutive of anything, it's just a french name, no?

His name is Rembrandt 'Remy' LeBeau.

I close my eyes and bow my head, scanning our destination.

"Grateful as I am to have been taken into your confidence, Rembrandt, I was hoping that you'd be prepared to give me a slightly more thorough briefing before we arrive."
Ah, a new episode already? And starting out with 'X-men'!Paul? This is a treat. On a mission with Remy, which means it's probably dealing with his family in New Orleans, who he hasn't always been on the best terms with...

"You don' need one. Ain't hard."

"The more I know about what's going on, the better I can help you. Please."
And in this case, he might need the help.

His eyes dip, though that's probably to check on the Blackbird's instruments rather than out of any sort of doubt.

"Mah brother done got his fool self caught bah d' Assassins. They wan' me in exchange."
The lifelong enemies of his family, the Thieves' Guild of New Orleans.

"The Assassins, as in a group called 'The Assassins'?"

He glances my way for a moment. "It mattuh?"
Well, I'm pretty sure they didn't run around in beaked white hoods with arm blades... :p But I suspect the name was serious.

"If they're a group of thugs who call themselves 'The Assassins' to sound scary, that's one thing. If they're actual professional killers for hire, that's quite another."

He snorts. "You wan' me turn this 'ere thing around?"
You can't accuse Paul of being scared, mind. I doubt they have anything capable of hurting him, even with powers.

And while I don't know if this 'X-ternal' was named in the episode, If she was meant to be Candra, she's probably a part of that loose group in the comics.

"'Power' meaning..?"

He takes his left hand off the control column and makes a pinching gesture, the dust in the air crackling and bursting as he empowers it.
So, she can awaken latent x-genes or disable them as well. Fully within her powers.

Oh.

"Can anyone get in on that action? Because swinging back here once a decade with a pile of cash is no effort at all."
I mean, the guilds might get shirty if you keep horning in on their deal...

"You wan' mo' power?"

"If all I have to do is pay-." I frown. "What..? Does she just wave her hands and you get a random pull, or can you ask for specific things?"
To be fair, that's if she even agrees to let you play the game. She might take one look at Paul, go 'No' and promptly leave.

Still, beating up that warlord does prevent a lot of trouble. Especially if you handed him over to SHIELD or the Chinese government afterwards

"Ain' dat simple. An' X-Ternal don' stick aroun' for no show-an'-tell."

"Well… If we run into her, I'll try asking once you're finished up. How about that?"
Worst case, she could pull a Circe and zap you into an unpleasant form. Or just drain your lifeforce, a mutant power more associated with Selene.

He smiles. "Lemme an' Bobby get twen'y feet clear and dat's jus' fahn." His smile fades. "The Assassins, yeah, dey kill people. Good at it, too."

"Hm. Right. And does tithe payment result in the other party to your agreement getting less?"
Bobby being his brother in the Thieves' Guild, not Iceman.

"It don'-." He stops, frowning. "How ole' you tink ah am?"

"I.. was guessing mid-twenties?"
Pretty sure he isn't super-old, though I wouldn't have put it past his creators to have planned that back when they introduced him back in the day. Not unprecedented, either, given long-lived mutants like Logan.

He nods. "I remember las' tahm. Ah left aftuh, when we didn't make payment an' Ol-yay paid da price."

"Which was?"
Amusingly, it's entirely possible that all the 'X-ternal' did was activate his X-gene. Which kind of makes sense, given how nutty human DNA can be in this universe.

Probably torn apart at the molecular level, since Candra is a telekinetic of a high calibre.

I'd say it consists of 'big pile of precious metals and jewels.' Whatever pleases a three thousand-year-old mutant vampire. Also, they got married already? They even beat out Scott and Jean. x3

"Alright, alright. Assassins. I assume they have a base in the swamp?"

"Uh-huh. We headin' dere now."
To kick ass and reclaim your kidnapped brother, eh? Helps that you have the team's biggest beat-stick behind Phoenix (who hasn't gained that power level yet.)

"And other than active assassins, will anyone else be there? Children, non-combatant supporters, that sort of thing?"

"Shouldn' be. Dey awl stay home. Least, dat's how we do it our end."
Besides the prospective empowerees, who would be barely-legal adults, if Remy was a normal example.

I nod. I mean…

"So how much do you like this woman? You said 'crazy ex-girlfriend' rather than 'some girl I knew', so I assume you're not neutral on the subject of her wellbeing."
There's a big spectrum from 'wouldn't mind seeing her again' and 'last time I saw her, she wanted my balls'. Belladonna's somewhere in the middle.

"She made her choice, ah made mine." He shrugs. "How it goes."

"When you got out, you asked her to leave with you?" He nods, an air of regret settling on his features. "Do you want her to leave with you now?"
Which is why she was after him to marry her in the episode... It was supposed to unite their guilds. Didn't work out that well.

"Dat ain't on da cards."

"Do you want your brother to leave with you? Any other family members? Ex-girlfriends? Pets?" … "Noteworthy trees..?"
Given how little Remy shared of his past in the series, those are entirely reasonable questions.

"Nah. He in fo' life." I raise my eyebrows. "Guess it don' hurt t'ask."

"No, I think it could this time. But you should anyway."

"Why you care dey kill people?"
Because they kill people, and that's kind of a bad thing. At least when they don't deserve it.

And since it's likely to be senior leadership, they're all likely to have high bodycounts, or at least be accessories.

And the police probably wouldn't discriminate between guilds. So everyone would get shot at.

"Y'all think we get police out 're?"

"If we could link them to specific murders, yes? I mean, this isn't an obvious place for an order of genie-worshipping assassins to meet up. So?"
It certainly sounds atmospheric for some kind of cult, though.

"We bein' recorded?"

"No."

"Den… Make mah life a whole mess easier." He sighs. "No. Jus' watch mah back."
Fine, challenge mode it is.

"As you will."

We fly in silence for a few moments.

"You gon' do it anyways?"
I mean, it's not like he has to be there in person to drop some folders with pertinent evidence on a detective's desk...

"Not sure. I'll try acquiring information. If it turns out that any of them have done anything particularly notorious… Ah, I can come back later. See where they go when they leave."

"Not sure how the professor feel 'bout dat."
To be fair, if these guys are using mutant powers in the committing of criminal acts, including murder? He might approve.

"I-."

"'specially from you. He like how diplomatic you are."
I mean, I'm sure he'll be plenty diplomatic about asking them to surrender on threat of death.

Either way, they got a long climb off the low bar they're starting at.

I foresee the episode's events going a lot differently to the original canon, especially with backup capable of long-range precision bombardment. Wonder if it'll end with the 'X-Ternal's immortality being sorely tested. Meanwhile, in the OL thread, it'll be interesting to see if Ahri'ahn responds to his little bit of espionage.

For a second there I thought this was Assassin's Creed and then remembered that they usually call themselves the Assassin Brotherhood not The Assassins.

I forgot to ask earlier. Who were these supervillains and under what circumstances did this Paul kill them?
The Mandarin's hench-groupies. They are known as The Hand. One of the first thing Paul did in the Marvel Animated Universe was to try and take out the Mandarin for his bounty. Did not go all that well because of Paul's complete lack of training, though he did manage to snatch of the Mandarin's rings(and the finger to go with it).

Wiki (and my recollection from comics) say his name is Remy Etienne LeBeau. Remy is s french name, not a diminutive like Wally. But if there was a change somewhere or you decided to change it, then I wasn't aware and that's why I was confused.
I did not know that Remy was an actual name. I will change that, though I suppose that it's slightly amusing that the SI might just have assumed.
It's always wise to target the worst first.
I forgot to ask earlier. Who were these supervillains and under what circumstances did this Paul kill them?
Mandarin's crew. Since who it was isn't important I suggest rolling dice for it Worm-style.
