With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

Maybe he ends as a minotaur or a centaur.

In fact it would be hilarious if he ends being the same species as Tirek.

Well... that is an interesting possible future appearance.

Zoat is Discord a Lord of Chaos, like Klarion and Mordru, in your story?

no its text, image, video and audio communication between users in a chat channel.
although it is quite chaotic, i'll admit

I wouldn't expect Gravy to change at all, since Zoat added resistance to transformation to New God powers.

Edgy black alicorn OC?

For real?

That probably will make Grayven want to shot himself.
No no, that's a hurrock, from Tamora Pierce's Wild Magic series. Sort of. Actual hurrock's are supposed to have forward facing eyes, but that was the best picture I could find. Basically, they're what happens when people think too much about what an evil Pegasus would look like and cause the world's magic to respond.

Sounds like an.... interesting magic system.

Wonder what happens when people are perverts...

Beryl beams from the back of her construct-pegasus as she continues her review of the evidence which the Cattle Rancher's Ass-. Sorry, the Brazilian government, sent to the Justice League. Garth appears quite happy to make do with his kinetic belt. He's competent enough, but with the massive amount of extra magic-related reading and practice he's had to do as we encouraged him to throw out the entire Conservatory of Sorcery curriculum to retrain on the fly hasn't allowed him the time to get really good with it.

Raquel is ignoring Angelika, who is shooting her the occasional discomported glance. I know that she knows why Raquel is here. I suspect that she heard everything Raquel not so subtly said about her…

Private word?

I fly a little closer and stick an orange sphere construct around us.

"Have you ever visited Brazil before?"

Her eyes flick around the interior of the bubble before she turns them upon me.

"Yes, it is a popular holiday destination for Germans on Earth Ten. But… It is nicer. There are no slums. The industrial build-up is far better planned."

"Slums happen whenever industrialisation happens and people migrate from the countryside to the cities."

"Not in countries governed by National Socialists. On my world, there was a government program to build high-rise accommodation for the incoming labourers. Not the best homes, perhaps, but better than those… Mouldy shacks."

"I'm… Sure they've got something in the works."

"Unchecked capitalism is harmful to the people. And to itself, ultimately." She shakes her head. "Brazil was not involved in fighting during the Second World War here any more than it was on my world. There is no good reason for it to be like this. I think that the Jews have infiltrated their government."

"That's a… Bit of a non sequitur." Quick check… "Also, no."

"No Jews?"

"Very few."

"They don't have to have direct control. Even-."

"Angelika, stop. The only person who controls the world economy is Demetrios Prokopios and he's Hellenist. If you wish to convince me otherwise then please provide me with a detailed analysis of global financial transactions for the past eighty years sorted by ethnic group and a very sound argument."

"I-. Okay, I will work on it. Why are we in a bubble?"

"Angelika, you just tried to say -with no evidence- that Jews are the reason why Brazil has slums."

She blinks, then her eyes switch from Raquel to Beryl.

"The Atlantean cannot be a Jew. Is the negro?"

"No, but that's beside the point. Remember what I said about being meritocratic?" She nods cautiously. "Part of that is having evidence when you accuse people of things, as a person's capacities can only be properly assessed when you have an accurate picture of their individual achievements. The more you slander -and it is slander if you can't back it up- groups of people, the less willing they will be to cooperate with you. And if you cause that situation to happen then the one dragging down the group performance is you. Is that your aim?"

"It-. No. I am committed to our work."

I smile. "Good." I stop smiling. "So knock it off."

"Are any of them-?"

"And if they've earned their place on the team or the League, why would it matter? I know that you checked what I said about Jews earning an Iron Cross. What did you find?"

"It was as you said."

"And why do you think that was?"

She doesn't reply.

"Because there's two basic possibilities. Either they were roughly as courageous as everyone else fighting in the war, or there's been a truly colossal cover-up including faking a hundred years' worth of documents. Tell me."

"I.. suspect that it.. was courage."

"Glad to hear-" I look around as a green-flame-wreathed Beatriz reaches our group, falling in next to Raquel. "-it. Oh, one other thing. I know that it's purely descriptive where you're from, but in America it's not considered polite to refer to black people as 'negros'."

She frowns. "Why? It is literally Spanish for 'black'. You call them black."

"Some words acquire resonances separate from their literal meaning. For example, to me, Ignatius is just a name."

"Hah!"

Outside the bubble, Raquel lets out a bark of laughter while Beatriz glares at me and.. Angelika. Beatriz, whose grandfather was a fascist hatchetman and tried to get her to join the Brazilian Integralist Party. Who would have preferred their last Emperor to stay in charge or for Hugo Danner to have taken over than what actually happened to happen.

"Alright, I'm going to go and talk to Fire. Please make polite, non-racial conversation with Squire until we arrive."

She nods and I drop the shield, the two of us peeling away in opposite directions.

"Fire, thank you-."

"Why the Hell did-" I erect a new soundproof bubble. "-you pick up a Nazi?!"

"There wasn't anyone to hand in greater need of rehabilitation."

"That-. Okay, yes, that is certainly true."

"And it would have been better if I'd been more specific about who would be joining us, but I didn't make the connection between your.. personal experiences and her until a moment ago."

Raquel frowns. "Brazil has Nazis?"

"Everywhere has Nazis. In Brazil, they ran the country for twenty years with the support of the American government."

"'cause of the Cold War, right."

"Fire, I'm perfectly happy for you to shout at me-."

"No, I'm annoyed at you, but you are trying to help her. I want to shout at her."

"Alright, after-."

"Hey!" Raquel frowns. "How come she gets to shout at her?"

"Because she's unlikely to meet Overgirl again, whereas you might have to work with her again. I'm not against a little invective being directed at her, but if that's all she's getting then she's more likely to close out external influences and that's an outcome I'm trying to avoid. But getting back to the actual mission: Fire, what can you tell us about the locals?"

Of course she did. Overhearing is extremely sensitive. And I doubt Angelika feels the need to respect people's privacy, given most of the Team's attitude towards her... I suspect she's feeling very ostracized right now...

Nice easy conversation starter, eh?

Her eyes flick around the interior of the bubble before she turns them upon me.

"Yes, it is a popular holiday destination for Germans on Earth Ten. But… It is nicer. There are no slums. The industrial build-up is far better planned."
...Yeah. I'll bet it was.

"Slums happen whenever industrialisation happens and people migrate from the countryside to the cities."

"Not in countries governed by National Socialists. On my world, there was a government program to build high-rise accommodation to the incoming labourers. Not the best homes, perhaps, but better than those… Mouldy shacks."
Ah, the Earth Ten equivalent of 'commie-blocks'. Fast, easy-to-build and soulless as machinery storage.

"I'm… Sure they've got something in the works."

"Unchecked capitalism is harmful to the people. And to itself, ultimately." She shakes her head. "Brazil was not involved in fighting during the Second World War here any more than it was on my world. There is no good reason for it to be like this. <Facepalm> Dammit... That's gonna piss so many people off...

"That's a… Bit of a non sequitur." Quick check… "Also, no."

"No Jews?"

"Very few."

"They don't have to have direct control. Even-."
There is no global conspiracy of Jews on Earth-16, Overgirl. Supervillains, yes, but their religion has little to do with it.

"Angelika, stop. The only person who controls the world economy is Demetrios Prokopios and he's Hellenist. If you wish to convince me otherwise then please provide me with a detailed analysis of global financial transactions for the past eighty years sorted by ethnic group and a very sound argument."

I wonder how she'll take the fact a literal Greek deity is keeping humanity from inflating itself into financial collapse...

"Angelika, you just tried to say -with no evidence- that Jews are the reason why Brazil has slums."

She blinks, then her eyes switch from Raquel to Beryl.

"The Atlantean cannot be a Jew. Is the negro?"
<Facepalm> For Eris' sake...

"No, but that's beside the point. Remember what I said about being meritocratic?" She nods cautiously. Thank you! Good gravy, she just refuses to change, doesn't she? Hopefully that obnoxious devotion to her ingrained beliefs gets worn down a little...

"Are any of them-?"

"And if they've earned their place on the team or the League, why would it matter? I know that you checked what I said about Jews earning an Iron Cross. What did you find?"

"It was as you said."
Yes, bit of an eye-opener wasn't it? Discovering one of your groups of 'subhumans' were badass war heroes?

"And why do you think that was?"

She doesn't reply.
Some cracks showing, I hope.

"Because there's two basic possibilities. Either they were roughly as courageous as everyone else fighting in the war, or there's been a truly colossal cover-up including faking a hundred years' worth of documents. Tell me."

"I.. suspect that it.. was courage."
Got it in one, Overgirl.

"Glad to hear-" I look around as a green-flame-wreathed Beatriz reaches our group, falling in next to Raquel. "-it. Oh, one other thing. I know that it's purely descriptive where you're from, but in America it's not considered polite to refer to black people as 'negros'."

...Ugh, I should just tape my hand to my face at this rate...

"Some words acquire resonances separate from their literal meaning. For example, to me, Ignatius is just a name."
Not so fun now, is it, Angelika? Look up the connotations of the words you've been using, see what you discover.

"Hah!"

Outside the bubble, Raquel lets out a bark of laughter while Beatriz glares at me and.. Angelika. Beatriz, who's grandfather was a fascist hatchetman and tried to get her to join the Brazilian Integralist Party. ...Well, shit, that's a big hit to the relationship score. Fast talking engage!

"Alright, I'm going to go and talk to Fire. Please make polite, non-racial conversation with Squire until we arrive."

She nods and I drop the shield, the two of us peeling away in opposite directions.
She's got a few things to think about now... Hope she actually does so.

"Fire, thank you-."

"Why the Hell did-" I erect a new soundproof bubble. "-you pick up a Nazi?!"
Though Angelika no doubt caught the start of that outburst... Good...

"There wasn't anyone to hand in greater need of rehabilitation."

"That-. Okay, yes, that is certainly true."
And better she make herself useful than sit around the Fortress watching cat videos...

Up until the local folks got sick of them, yes? To Wikipedia! er... Encarta Populi! ...Ew, what a mess.

"'cause of the Cold War, right."

"Fire, I'm perfectly happy for you to shout at me-."

"No, I'm annoyed at you, but you are trying to help her. I want to shout at her."
Maybe leave it until after this mess is sorted out?

"Alright, after-."

"Hey!" Raquel frowns. "How come she gets to shout at her?"

"Because she's unlikely to meet Overgirl again, whereas you might have to work with her again. I'm not against a little invective being directed at her, but if that's all she's getting then she's more likely to close out external influences and that's an outcome I'm trying to avoid. Focus on the task at hand, ladies. No doubt shit is going to get effed up at some point.

Well, at least most of the crap that went down in Brazil happened more than twenty years ago... Let's keep the shouting related to the story, though? And seriously, how much more messed up could it have been with superhumans running around?

And the clone is still basically meaningless here. Like, the only way it could possibly matter is if Paul tried to pass the clone off as the original. And the clone was actually somehow a decent enough actor to fool Overgirl.

Of course some of this feels like it could be a setback.

"Brazil wouldn't have these shitty slums if National Socialists were in charge like on my Earth."

Somehow I think the message that nations are run better on Earth 10 isn't the one you want to be sending. Or the stuff about keeping capitalism in check.

And the Amazon mission's squad is coming along nicely. Hopefully it turns out to be something mundane, but knowing OL's luck, hilarity will ensue.
I mean, he's only twice now pontificated about how easy the mission will be. By the time he gets there the Black Lanterns will have taken over Truggs, who will be using futuretech to clone Darkseid and the Anti-Monitor as a legion of zombie-slaves.

Oh, no. He's going to have Fire on the same team as Euanthe. As if the social juggling act wasn't bad enough already...

Nazis are all about dem genes. Someone with Hitler's genes despising Nazis? Impossibru!!!

While I can certainly appreciate the idea of Overgirl meeting a clone of Hitler who hates Nazis, I'd feel really bad about forcing him to meet her. Otto (I think his name was) very much wants to bury that part of his creation and forget about it. He's got a wife and kids plus the knowledge of being a clone of a man as widely reviled as Hitler would weigh on anyone. Why not just leave the man in peace?

Somehow I think the message that nations are run better on Earth 10 isn't the one you want to be sending. Or the stuff about keeping capitalism in check.
Bizzare thing to me is that the nazi's were only really socialist in name and out of necessity, wherever possible they actively pushed for little government involvement in stuff like banks and construction but they were basically forced to be involved if Hitler wanted to get the economy churning out tanks, planes and bullets for WW2. It's even noted from his associates that he stated many times that he loathed socialists and socialism as it goes against social darwinism which was so predominant at the time. They used those policies because otherwise Germany would've starved and likely collapsed without them. Its genuinely shocking to me that the nazi's of earth 10 actually stayed socialist once it became obvious that they had taken out any countries that were threats to them.

That's not how they worked at all, Handle. Even the Nazis understood the importance of indoctrinating people into their belief system.

When they thought an unusual number of Poles had Aryan enough features to qualify for Germanization, they brushed it off by concluding they were just Germans who had been Polonized. That they were saving them from degeneracy by re-Germanizing them.

A clone of Hitler not being a Nazi isn't a mind shattering revelation. They'd just brush it off because of course their enemies would raise a clone to hate them.

===

Well, apparently Hitler hated both egalitarian socialism and free market capitalism.

Both in public and in private, Hitler expressed disdain for capitalism, arguing that it holds nations ransom in the interests of a parasitic cosmopolitan rentier class. He opposed free market capitalism because it "could not be trusted to put national interests first," and he desired an economy that would direct resources "in ways that matched the many national goals of the regime," such as the buildup of the military, building programs for cities and roads, and economic self-sufficiency. Hitler also distrusted capitalism for being unreliable due to its egotism and he preferred a state-directed economy that maintains private property and competition but subordinates them to the interests of the Volk.

And apparently Joseph Goebbels once wrote that Communism and Capitalism were both awful, but if Germany was forced to choose one or the other than it would be better to "go down with Bolshevism than to live in eternal slavery to Capitalism".

We can't really be sure in what ways the introduction of advanced Kryptonian technology could have influenced the way they do things, but I think a victorious Nazi Germany would probably continue down the path of state capitalism.

Maybe having an economy more like modern China's?

I'd honestly been staying out of the rhetoric regarding the Nazi stuff and just sit and wait to see where the plot was going, but RNG seems to have dropped Nazi related stuff in my lap. Stumbled across a documentary "Nazis on Drugs: Hitler and the Blitzkrieg" based on a book similarly named "Blitzed: Drugs in Nazi Germany"

Wiki info reference for the short version.

The doc covered 2 major themes, the first use of uppers on all sides of the war at an industrial scale (with the german army producing and issuing what we now refer to as crystal meth for their troops to keep them awake and alert for days during the blitz) and a break down from captured medical notes taken by Hitler's doctor, in particular the wide range of drugs he was being pumped full of (mostly a weird cocktail of hormones, cocaine and what we'd now refer to as oxycodone.)

They even documented Hitler as sleeping through D-day because he'd been up all night on uppers and had been sedated to get some rest, and his body guards refused to let anyone get him up.

Now I've often heard the story told that the Allies stopped trying to kill Hitler because he was doing more damage to the Axis war effort while in power, and they were worried that if they offed him that they might end up with someone competent in charge, but this is the first time I have seen it brought to the forefront that his physical health and addictions may have played a much larger part in his documented slide into less and less rational orders as the war wrapped up, rather then his imbalances being entirely mental, as the Nazi's held him up as a symbol of purity and clean living.

With that as the setting for Earth Prime, I'd be curious as to how that went for earth-16's version, which may have gone a similar way (magic LSD had to be invented first before Paul got any after all), where as earth 10's likely had some level of Kryptonian medical science early on, which might have had a impact on the leadership on that front.

Anyway, just found it curious when stumbling upon it.
