• The site has now migrated to Xenforo 2. If you see any issues with the forum operation, please post them in the feedback thread.
  • Due to issues with external spam filters, QQ is currently unable to send any mail to Microsoft E-mail addresses. This includes any account at live.com, hotmail.com or msn.com. Signing up to the forum with one of these addresses will result in your verification E-mail never arriving. For best results, please use a different E-mail provider for your QQ address.

  • Since it has happened MULTIPLE times now, I want to be very clear about this. You do not get to abandon an account and create a new one. You do not get to pass an account to someone else and create a new one. If you do so anyway, you will be banned for creating sockpuppets.
  • Due to the actions of particularly persistent spammers and trolls, we will be banning disposable email addresses from today onward.

XF2 upgrade

It might actually, depending on what agreement they have with Xon and how often they communicate with them.
"No further progress since last update" still counts as an update. If we got an update every two months or something, even if that update was "nothing to report", I would be a lot less annoyed about the seeming double-speak about the upgrade progress.

It's been waiting on me for a few weeks, sorry.
Xon got the upgrade tested and stuff but needs alethiophile and I to go through and check permissions settings to make sure nothing got borked up in the transfer.

I haven't had the brainpower in my offtime to devote to it, the holidays have been pretty hectic, I'll try and get it done this weekend or next weekend.

Hey, not screwing it up is as important as getting it done. Push it back a week or two if you need to, just give us an update on like the last weekend of January or the first weekend of February or something.

When last I worked on this issue, I ran into a wall where the code throwing the error was inside a blob in the Web code, so I didn't have any easy way to debug it.

At this point we're actively working on the XF 2 transition, with an eye toward finishing it within the next month or two. I'm hoping that that will fix this issue incidentally. If not, under XF 2 we'll be in a better situation to do tricky debugging.

Last I heard our Admins needed to find time to go through a few things (IDK what or how long). Then probably need Xon to find time to do more stuff (rampant speculation on my part).

On a side note the unplanned qq outage (last Thursday) was caused by a bug on the XF2 test build of QQ (which crashed both)

There now everyone is all caught up. :D

We're running on software that hasn't been updated in about 4 years. Forgive me if I'd rather we update before some script kiddie uses a known security flaw to wipe the entire site 'for teh lulz'.
"For teh moralz" would probably be more likely, either over porn generally or specifically the lolis getting lewded.

There was a vulnerability Xon had disclosed to XF devs for the version we're on, but Xon had done a manual mitigation for it, so we're clear on that front.

It's been a while since Xon has been able to do work on it, so now he has to do some more work (because things updated, lmao)
But it was also yes, pending something Aleth/myself needed to do, too. I'll go ahead and do that bit tonight.

Real talk, I genuinely don't get the hate that Xenforo 2 gets. Granted, the only sites I go to that use it at the moment are SB and SV, but I distinctly remember that both of those sites when they were running on Xenforo 1 looked at least 98% identical to how they ended up looking after their Xenforo 2 upgrades. I think there was some minor stuff, like sticky headers, and some weird stuff with how user avatars would move on the page as you scroll down? But in all of those cases there were and are options in the user preference options page to revert back to how things were, so that's not really a meaningful issue.

Some of the bigger ones:
  • The entire way the like bar works (mind you, given how it works on Smogon, the shitty way that gets displayed on SB seems to be a deliberate choice for some reason).
  • The loss of many of the forum styles.
  • The changes to how profile pics work.

I had the meaningful issue of XF2 update completely bricking SV for me for a couple months while Xon was working out the kinks; loading any page took five minutes and making replies was a hopeless endeavor. Since I couldn't use the forum to forum, I went there less and less and now my SV account is abandoned. Not out of malice or anything, but out of habit by now. So yes, upgrades can get ragged on in user experience perspectives for legit reasons.

a) 'The site was unusable for 5 months' is not a 'user experience' issue, b) Xon has, in fact, worked out those kinks by now, so it's not particularly relevant to whether QQ should upgrade or not, and c) I was using SV all throughout the upgrade period and never experienced anything like that.

Xenforo 2 textbox is shit. SHIIIIIT

Like holy shit I hate typing on SB. It keeps fucking up whenever I try to use italics/bolds/etc. And the stuff like spoilers are all in bothersome dropboxes.

Huh, I guess some people do use the WYSIWYG editor. I just have most BBcode memorised.

EDIT: Derp, meant WYSIWYG.

o_Oo_Oo_O

I straight up don't see any real difference between the Xenforo 2 textbox and the one on QQ.

Back in my day, we didn't have no fancy WYSIWYG editor. We typed in our own damned BBCode. Uphill! Both ways! And we goddamn liked it! *grumbles in old man*

Edit: More seriously, same. I got started in the PhpBB days, so I mostly type out the codes manually even now.

On a computer there isn't really a difference, on mobile however? SB's is godawful, trying to use anything from the top bar is a pain in the ass because it treats it as part of the fucking text box and freaks out every single time you hit one of them.

The dropdowns are even worse since they freak out multiple times (when you open them and when you hit the option in them), and you have to hope that scrolling back up to hit the option in the dropdown doesn't accidentally close the fucking thing.

Not to mention trying to select the text to apply the thing in the first place.

The XF1 textbox is significantly better than the XF2 one on mobile.

I mean, I think vBulletin had a WYSIWYG? That was the standard when I started. I think I learned the BBcode because it's tricky to fuck around with quotes in WYSIWYG. I've an eidetic memory, so memorising it wasn't too hard, but I imagine it'd be harder for others.

Well, yes, obviously, as is implicit in the statement "the account now lies abandoned out of habit."

Cool, but I was using a midrange Android phone. My brother had the same issues IIRC with a tablet, so it seems it was about Android in general? I didn't have issues on PC either, despite my PC at the time being roughly on par with my phone (it was pretty old).

Spacebattles fullscreen is also full retard.

Fullscreen is supposed to be fullscreen, not THIS.
As always, my main desire is that the QQ textbox is somehow kept. Or if someone can figure out how to preserve the textbox somewhere, because the functionality is perfect for me, and I hate the current SB textbox.

For example, when I use fullscreen on it? In ends up falling far short of the whole screen.

That ain't the whole screen, and it doesn't even show the word count, etc. It's SHIT.

Or in general, the typing is not as responsive. QQ's textbox responds perfectly, there's no lag from activating bold or italics. SB and SV? They have that lag, meaning if I type without pause (and not even THAT fast, something like three letters per second is already enough to trigger this) while deactivating italics or bold, it fails to trigger the deactivation and I keep typing modified text, and such.
How the fuck do you downgrade in functionality?!

I can take a lot of changes assuming it's similar to what SB/SV will get. But god help me, please keep the textbox functional.

My problem with the XF2 textbox remains the same.

Buttons are far less convenient (dropboxes are stupid and are especially inconvenient on a phone!, and also the their functions like spoiler? Require additional internet input unlike QQ immediately having it available even offline!), the typing has lag when you're using text modifiers, and once more, the fullscreen is full retard.

Keep the textbox and I'd be happy, but I'm worried that's not gonna be the case.

You are not alone.

I hate Xen 2 with a passion.

If this place does switch over then I'm leaving.

So I've got to ask, are we moving soon? Not that I want to put pressure on the staff but either there's background shit going on or the sites been trying to kill itself for a few weeks now. Usually it's fine and then other times you'll just get odd errors usually tied to trying to access a page that's been sitting open too long without activity even though it just opened or none of the theme actually showing... or worse, random parts of the theme working but not all of it.

You might have been "Discouraged".

It's an option in the Admin section.

Discouraged

Discouraged users are subjected to annoying random delays and failures in system behavior, designed to 'encourage' them to go away and troll some other site.

Alternatively, you may use IP-based discouragement.

We are not using any discouragement features.
There have been some service hiccups lately- we are also looking into upgrading our host again.

I just want to keep the same Blackend-Blue theme I have now. Easy on the eyes.
Themes will be a bit of an issue- because they kinda need customization more than before, we're probably going to scale back on number of available themes.

I'll make sure we get a good dark theme though. (I use Blackened Purple right now)
