Oh, by the way, whatever happened to this? I've been looking through both threads and I can't find another mention of it by Bird.

We ended up reading it, way way later.

It got us the Mirror Keeping trait.

Level 6 books giving us traits makes them very very useful. But who cares about that when we can use them as Ascension material for waifu Teresa Galmier.
 
Edit: in other words we murdered the fuck out of a chunni tree that was doing its best impression of a dreadfully imposing Master of the Lores because the pony best suited to teach it what ethics are bought its Grogar impression. We killed Pinocchio, we set Pinocchio on Wolf-sent super-fire.
To be fair this was kind of amoral Pinocchio at best.
Shame that was not an agreeable option.
One powerful enough to effortlessly bully Luna and Chrysalis and run circles around Cadance and Celestia (So clearly unbeatable through normal gameplay actions). And unpalatable enough to the players' tastes. So it's no surprise that players both did only the minimum GM-mandated interactions with the Master and picked the first presented cutscene option to kill it off for good.

It gets worse when you remember that Moth was the lore that Velvet demonstrated the most interest/affinity in the past(Copper recruited her talking about it).
As an aside, I wonder how the quest would would have been written by the author with the character starting superficially the same and with the same backstory, but played to be wildly different morally. Still the ironclad "family is everything" conviction, but for everything else to be a mask, a lie, a hollow image, an extended act of social mimicry.

Well, we're near the Everfree. Scavengers could easily have gotten at the bodies before they were found and made off with pieces. It's a simple and actually fairly probable explanation.

Actually can we reveal that a Windigo was part of the attack to Celestia?
Something like that could work as a second layer of "truth" on the attack, once the Bureau learns of their existence: "The cultists brought a Wendigo to sic it on the Commissioner and her household, but she fought it off and so the summoned monster picked the easier prey and turned on its handlers and murderized them."

There was a vote that would have had this be the case in the aftermath of the Ritual against Luna. Would definitely have been interesting, though it would be a be try different quest!

Come to think about, regarding plan more heart. We are still a few scraps away from being able to do the Moth sacrament. Are we sure we want to deal with whoever she chooses for that long? We also don't know whát they would do once they turn to acquaintances after the sacrament, if they are a truly reprehensible plony then they might do something instead of leaving us alone.

As opposed to digging a hole who's best argument is "well maybe we'll want use a prisoner for a Sacrament 3 - 4 turns from now at best". Several turns where they will actively be trying to escape.

Personally I want to do it so we have nonlethal option during expedition. Perhaps Copper will require additional persuasion to pass Neighina bindings to us. Or some of her cultists will look useful and appear cooperative.

Plus I don't want expedition to be led by Biddie, since we could see again and again that Names or at least unfriended Names follow orders literally at best and go Master's Hive assault route in the worst cases. And he is not even optimal mechanically, since he is better than Rarity in search for Outsider. And Comet would hate us again if we order him to explicitly kill Copper. Rarity would be less than happy too. Better to order them to remove Copper as a threat and if she goes down fighting then no big loss, if she surrounds we will see what we can do. We always can kill her after she is delivered to us.

I remember when I was advocating for trying to go non-lethal because I thought Velvet was crossing a line she shouldn't. In hindsight, I was naive, but I still believe that mercy has a place.
For Copper, that mercy is a quick death. No imprisonment for month only to get her mind or body eaten at the end. Ideally she won't even see it coming, just a quick blowdart to the back of the head.

we are ONE scrap away from moth sacrament, AND we have the book to study for it if necessary.

So no, the only thing holding us back from Moth Sacrament at this point is having a confidant/leashed good friend we're willing to drop

(and ethical concerns for some, and a maybe foolish hope that removing the scar and finding out the source of Velvet's trauma might lead to the sacrament changing... which honestly I think that might at best be the FIRST step towards it. As in, "good, you now know WHY Velvet hates herself. Find a way to have her not hate herself any longer and MAYBE the sacrament will change to reflect that)

Well who you propose to lead expedition to kill her? If Bieddie then I told why I have my doubts about him. If Comet or Rarity then both would not be okay with killing in cold blood and it would be better done by Velvet personally or at least by one of her Names. Or we still would refuse to take matters in our hoofs and make our followers do hard work for us?

Or we still would refuse to take matters in our hoofs and make our followers do hard work for us?

Let's be real, Rarity is a Minion that Velvet denies is a Minion, she will probably be as up for deleting Copper as the Mane 6 were for vaporizing Sombra in the final season of MLP.
 
@OurLadyOfWires I know the choice of who leads a (short) expedition vs who follows doesn't have mechanical consequences with respect to tackling challenges. Does it have narrative consequences? Do things proceed differently with Biedde leading vs. Comet vs. Rarity (lol)? Or is the choice of who spends the action more of a mechanical piece than a narrative one?

Your doubts amount to "oh no we're sending a person who has autonomy to do something!". Which applies any time we ask a Name to do literally anything, and would especially apply if we sent a non-summon to lead the assault, because they don't have supernatural bindings that compel them to follow our orders.

I am fine with leaving it to her or Comet judgement, but Copper still is Grail adept. I'd prefer to have back up plan in case she goes on her knees, makes a big round eyes and tells whoever comes to kill her that they can't be hero by staining they hoof with her blood, or that killing her would be monstrous thing to do or whatever bullshit she may come up. Better to have prison and not use it but have it available for the time when we would need Sacraments, than not have it and suddenly find a need for one.

We are sending person who is not only have authonomy but also not our friend and would not consider our goals beyond what we have directly ordered. Look at Biedde allowing that gangster to fight Velvet, or Baldomare taking orders to find ritual sites literally.

Biedde fought the strongest opponent he could reminder mortals will not fight Biedde if at all possible, they will flee or go for other opponents. If you want the Names to do what we want, make friends with them, it is that simple. Treat them with respect, help them with their problems, and don't assume hostility when their is none. If Biedde wanted Velvet dead she would be.

If we tell the Name of Edge to go kill someone they will, and they will do so at a level beyond what any mortal could hope to do.

I'm still not seeing the problem here. Our goal is to kill Copper. If we order Biedde to kill Copper, he (and the rest of the Name Hit Squad) will go kill Copper. If you genuinely care about them for some reason taking a detour to kill literally every single member of the cult, then tell them to only kill Copper Secateur and maybe Neighnia (without incriminating us). If you want them to do more than one thing while they're there, then order them to try and do more than that one specific thing.

My concerns with the attack include (though I don't think any of these are too big a deal):

1) What do we do if Copper isn't with her cult, and taking her out lets them mostly survive?
2) What do we do if we can eliminate Copper but not unsummon or recover Neighnea? What are the consequences of an unbound Neighnea at the head of a cult?
3) What do we do if we can't recover our manuscripts? Or if Copper has realized how valuable those are and has set them up to blow up in our face if she dies?
4) What if Neighnea, name of Endings, has a way to either fake her death or prevent it?

(These are mostly abstract worries, not reasons to not do it lol.)

But I don't think we have to worry about the Name hit-squad getting Grailed by her. I really really don't.

I mean, what if we discover that Copper has a Dead Man's switch of Bound Windigos in the city? I wouldn't want Biedde making the decision on whether or not to immediately pop Copper anyways, collateral be damned, instead of knocking her out long enough to go defuse that first.

He also left the door wide open on purpose, which led us all to go WTF. Therefore he is capable of making decisions that make us go Biedde WTF.

I thought we were discussing expedition leaders though, not current actions. If everything is found out ahead of time that is fine and dandy, but I'm talking about potential surprises in the field. It's not scrying is guaranteed to reveal everything.
 
Going Honored Guest on Filthy Rich and Spoiled Rich is a action to my understanding of making Filthy Rich a good friend.

But like, I'm not really eager on using him for our Moth Sacrament.
