Feudal Quest

@ShaperV: So, as we are probably going to be a magic expert, i have to ask: why is the Moutain Sage not in the project page anymore? did we wait too long and she/he left?

Gavrilla sending us adventure leads is a good way to build up our family esteem and satisfy the hero route urges without leaving our lands for too long. Not to mention the possibility of more training and perhaps getting our regency magic buffed and spread.

I want to make big plays with the refugees, but I have to admit that our plate is full for the upcoming year, and if we try and take on much more it might all just fall to pieces. Thankfully the other nobles don't seem to realize the grand opportunity before them (or probably don't need people as much as we do right now) so we can afford to make small plays for now and hope they don't catch on to what we intend before we shoot past them in strength suddenly.
The ability to get used to the refugees and their culture/language before taking on the huge amount is a good idea too.

[X] Ask Gavrilla to start feeding you adventure leads
[X] Take a mix of craftsmen and 'odd' (i.e. magical or physically altered) refugees, up to a few dozen total. This will give you some benefits without tying you down completely.

No, he should still be there. Maybe I had Chesna mention him but never put in an actual adventure lead entry?

I'll correct that when I post the turn results later today.

All of you are being way too much greedy.

[X] Decline. You have too many other irons in the fire right now.

June Results

Update - July 1, Year 1

Dominic - Visit Castle Pisch for Negotiations
You convince Nikolai to let you take a shot at influencing Dita under the guise of helping her, but now you're going to be blamed if she runs off.

You agree to meet with Baron Balzar's daughter Zarana to investigate the possibility of a marriage alliance. Gavrilla is now expecting to hear a proposal from you by September, and is likely to start pressuring you to marry if she doesn't hear anything by then.

You and Gavrilla make short work of Nikolai's passive resistance, and make arrangements for Chesna to travel to the capital with her mother for her debut. Chesna gives you all the credit for this and is quite grateful, although she jokes that she doubts any of the men in the capital will measure up to you. Lala seems more inclined to give Gavrilla credit for taking care of things, but she seems happy enough with the outcome.

Gavrilla agrees to begin feeding you adventure leads that would benefit the family one way or another. There will probably be several of them in the next few months, then it will slow down to one every 4-6 months.

You inform the dwarves that Corzu will can take in a few dozen refugees next year, and offer to deal with any exotic or magical individuals that would be hard to place elsewhere.

Dominic - Adventure: The Cleansing of Corzu
With the aid of the two Chosen (Emma and Inga) you execute Atalaya and remove both haunts. You then perform the final ritual to establish your magical claim over Corzu, and select the following two benefits:

Stat bonus while in Corzu: +1 Soul
Sense supernatural evil within 1 mile while in Corzu

Dominic - Teach Dita Swordsmanship
Dita proves to be quite talented with a blade, and thanks to her magic she actually has the raw strength to be able to fight male opponents without being overwhelmed. She makes good progress this turn, although she has a long way to go before she's an expect.

Teaching swordsmanship also counts as training time for you, bringing your skill up to 3 [+3/16]. It also provides an opportunity to build a closer relationship with Dita, who seems to enjoy getting sweaty and beating each other up a lot more than you'd expect from a proper noble lady. But then, she's not exactly proper.

By the end of the month you feel that you've finally gotten through to Dita, and convinced her that you actually want to help her even if it causes you trouble. She actually cries a little when she realizes you're serious, before hugging you and thanking you profusely.

But perhaps the most surprising thing about this interlude is the fact that by the end of the month you're catching her checking you out on a pretty regular basis, especially on hot afternoons when you decide to dispense with your shirt during sparring practice. Apparently her interests don't exclusively run to girls?

Bialas - Train Troops: Skill (Spearmen)
Bialis manages to impress some basic skills on your raw recruits.

Jaroslaw - Recruit Troops (Archers)
Success. But he had to make a tour of Igal and the hamlets to find enough volunteers, and he reports that you're starting to run short on manpower now. Future recruiting will probably be more difficult.

Dita - Train: Swordsmanship
Dita greatly enjoys training under you, although you'd swear she actually gets turned on every time you beat her in a sparring match. Her skill improves to Swordsmanship 1 [+3/4].

Katiana - Construction
The granary construction continues on schedule, although Kat had to work some late nights to make up for the time spent adventuring.

At this point you're finally starting to get a feel for Kat's abilities, and the mystery of her extra actions is becoming clear. It looks like Kat gets a partial second action every turn, which she can use for short adventures or personal projects she feels highly motivated to pursue. She also has a talent for turning any unusual event into an adventure, which was what she was doing when she first arrived. So while you can only assign her one action per turn, she'll tend to get other things done on the side.

Traian - Train: Merchant
Traian masters the accounting and planning aspects of this skill easily enough, but he sucks at the people side. You can probably rely on him to make purchases without getting cheated now, but he's never going to be good at socializing.

Order: Pass Chesna 100 SP to acquire Kat's goods from Baron Timis
Chesna gleefully presents you with a bundle of books and papers while you're visiting with Gavrilla. It seems Timis was happy to be rid of the potentially incriminating documents, and it only cost 70 SP. Katiana will be thrilled to have her grimoire and research notes back.

Order: Equip the Chosen properly
Getting them clothing, weapons and general supplies is easily done. Properly fitted armor and special weapons will take a few weeks, but both Chosen now plan to return to Corzu to resupply periodically so that won't be a problem.

Order: Write a letter to our father accepting his offer for a seneschal.
Done. You can expect your new retainer to arrive around the end of this month.

Order: In Eztergrom find a reputable book merchant and establish that you are interested in purchasing books on Roman engineering and armies, along with books on India and the Middle East.
You obtain a nice little collection of books about Roman practices, but information on the Middle East and India is harder to come by. The bookseller in Eztergrom promises to put the work out through his contacts about your request, and let you know what turns up.

Order: If any free time remains spend it getting to know Kat better
It's a busy month, but you find a few moments here and there.

Kat is an energetic, enthusiastic girl who always has more projects going than you can keep track of. She's much smarter than you first realized (Mind 3), which does fit better with the fact that she has Wizardry 4 at the age of 17. She has a lot of big plans for her magic - she talks about researching ways to enchant weapons, build golems, even grow castles like trees. You're not sure how much of that is actually possible, but she clearly intends to explore the limits of her magical potential.

She was terrified by your adventure together, but she's game for more expeditions if you need her. You get the feeling that she understands the practical benefits of XP vs. training, and is willing to take some risks in order to advance quickly. She also kind of enjoys crushing her enemies, especially if they're evil so she doesn't feel any need to exercise restraint.

On a personal level Kat tends to communicate through little hints and comments instead of just sitting down and talking about her concerns, which can sometimes be a little annoying. But she's affectionate and playful and a hell of a lot less inhibited than most Borjerians, which makes up for a lot. At this point she's made it pretty clear that she's willing to play second wife to a Borjerian noblewoman if need be, and she doesn't care if that's legal in Borjeria - as a priestess of Thoth she's empowered to perform her own marriage ritual, and that's good enough for her. She seems quite impressed with Dita, and has hinted a couple of times that she'd make a better wife than a Khersian zealot or an ornamental socialite.

Personal Life
Mira and Aldona miss you terribly whenever you travel, but that just means you get an enthusiastic welcome whenever you return home. They're both quite impressed by your heroic deeds, not to mention the number of beautiful and exotic women who hang around you. They're a bit afraid of Dita and the Chosen, and fiercely grateful to Kat for protecting them from Atalaya's curse. They also seem to think it's inevitable that you're going to add Kat to the harem at some point, but if anything they're looking forward to that - they seem to think she's a fine mentor and role model.

Overall life is good, but whatever you end up doing about a marriage alliance is going to complicate matters.

Hidden Lore Acquired - Chosen Empowerments
Your investigation of Emma's empowerment results in a number of interesting, alarming and potentially useful discoveries.

First, the mechanism of the empowerment is some sort of odd gender-specific enchantment. A huge fountain of magical energy fountains up in her womb and flows out from there to saturate her body and spirit, enhancing pretty much every aspect of her being. There's some sort of complicated interaction with her aura that tells the magic what to do, and interestingly enough the energy doesn't inherently have a holy aspect. You suspect that's because humans aren't inherently holy creatures, so constantly filling one with holy magic of that intensity would have unfortunate side effects.

But that aura sensitivity introduces a serious weakness, because it makes it possible for something other than Inovia herself to change what the empowerment does. You're pretty sure only a virgin could become a Chosen, because any contamination from someone else's aura would make the initial empowerment go haywire. Even now the presence of any aura other than her own there (i.e. from spells, or being pregnant, or even just having sex with a man) would either seriously weaken her or make her enhancements malfunction in unpredictable ways. A devious mage could turn her own power against her by introducing a carefully-designed artificial aura into the energy flow, telling the magic to change her in whatever way he might find useful. Given the amount of power involved it would probably be possible to have major effects in very little time.

Normally Emma is protected from such manipulation by a protective effect that makes her highly resistant to outside magic. But as you noted before, once she lets you in there aren't any further layers of defense. If you can heal her or buff her you can also do anything else you want to.

Studying the form Emma's empowerment magic takes gives you many clues about how to duplicate her abilities using your own sorcery. At this point you feel confident that you could research sensory enhancements, a movement buff or a better form of rapid healing based on these observations. You also suspect it would be possible to train a Chosen to alter the form that her enhancements take through meditation and visualization, although that would be easiest with one who had magical abilities.

One somewhat disturbing thing you note is that Emma's empowerment has a considerable effect on her emotions. You think the intent may have just been to make her enjoy killing monsters, but the actual effect is to make her sexually aroused by bloodshed and destruction. This is particularly unfortunate since her libido and sense of touch are as enhanced as everything else, but she doesn't dare actually have sex for fear of what the aura contamination would do to her powers.

Yeah. No wonder everyone thinks these girls are insane. You'd be pretty unstable too if you had to live like that for a few years.

Other Events
For once you don't have any other unexpected events.

Note: Status posts are still being updated.

Oh boy, poor girls.

Aaaaand stop tempting us with the Adventurer Route, Kat.

you know if we leaked the "their crazy to do sexual frustration" bit with the right phrasing it might improve the chosen's reputation via making them easier to relate to for the general population. just say that their empowerment increases their lust but they live under a rule of chastity in order to keep their power until they marry.

For actions:

[X] The smuggling operation is becoming a financial burden on our land. Deal with the problem, permanently.
[X] Practice flesh sorcery to get that birth control spell.
[X] If possible improve roads for infrastructure.

Minor actions:
[X] Increase relationship with Kat and Dita.

Unless anyone else can think up better actions.

Hmm, if we want to pursue the Nikolai's Associates adventure the coming month is going to be the only chance we'll have to do it before Chesna leaves, but we've not really explored any stealth abilities yet so trying to pursue it right now is pretty problematic. If she returns before Pavel does we might be able to try then, or just pursue it without her help though.

I've gotten the impression the wizardry is pretty much the "do anything" magic, now that Kat has her tools back could she create some sort of stealth/SEP effect?

Also it says we're getting the seneschal at the end of this month, does that mean the month that just ended or the one we're currently planning for?

@ShaperV:

By the way, I'm curious about something. Tell me what would higher tier spells be like with Force Sorcery at 5?

We should deal with the beastmen this turn. They are the largest remaining problem in our fief. It would probably be a good idea to have Dominic lead the attack since that might get us XP

Is meeting the Balzar girl a major action?

The remaining action can be spent on training either flesh sorcery or Diplomacy.

So, there is a number of things that are somewhat urgent now:

*Meeting Zarana is not something we can push back, and it is, i think, worth a full project, not just a minor action. If we want to be able to decide whether to marry or not we really need to put some effort into getting to know her and learn of her Barony, her opinions, her skill. Sure, Dominic can usually get a rough idea of someone pretty quickly, but we saw with Kat that it's not really exact, and it doesn't really compare to a full-on effort to befriend her, learn about her ability, and above all learn what she brings to the table. It might be worth it to do all this while doing a small adventure. As Zaran supposedly is specced in intrigue, i am tempted to do "learn about Nikolai's shady people with Zaran and Chesna". The downside to this is that as Zarana is specced toward intrigue, if we do not ally with her she might use what she learns against us.

*Learning some Fire sorcery. Both our Fire, Force sorcery and Wizardry are woefully inadequate right now, and we need to improve all of them. However, Fire sorcery takes precedence simply because it's a game changer for both the beastmen and our upcoming winter. Being able to go on smallish adventures with a group during winter is truly useful. Kat can use her partial action for joint training in Fire Sorcery.

*The beastmen of the lim. We have to deal with them soon. The easiest way would be to do a join operation with Rogatica, which would couple as a diplomatic encounter and keep up his respect toward us, but i would tend to prefer to do this ourself. Put 30 green spearmen and 10 veteran men-at-arm under that Knight Ditri, Put five veteran men-at-arm, five rangers under yourself and Dita, and i should think that should do the trick. If we do that, having Dita finish training up her swordmanship to 2 while we are ourself training up our Fire sorcery might be good.

*Repair the roads. This is getting more and more important, and we shouldn't put it back. Traian can being working on that now with peasants/etc.

*Granary just needs one month to be finished, so Kat can do that.

*I think it would be a good idea to begin patrolling. Bialis and the remaining green spearmen can do that.

*Jaroslaw can begin training the green archers.

@ShaperV:
-Zaran is coming to our keep for this month right, we don't need to go meet her in Balzar?
-Senechal is coming and will be available this month, not next month?
-Reminder about Moutain Sage.

About other things:
it might be worth it to think about the Smugglers- if we marry Ezti we will talk to her about them, if we don't we will need to deal with them. This is NOT for this month, though, as it heavily depends on whether we are marrying Ezti.

Kat is going to be able to tutor us in Wizardry soon, and set up our own grimoire. If we want to be able to be our Family's magical expert, we need to know Wizardry too.

Once the granary is complete, we'll need to begin thinking about playing with grain prices and so on.

While i am firmly against betraying Ezti and selling her out to Rogatica, if we don't marry her we should consider whether it's better for us to convince her to marry him and thus hope to gain a firm alliance there. We'll be surrounded by Rogatica if we do so however: Extreme Danger, as he is a military man! The other option would be to find another marriage propesct for Ezti, one we trust. The obvious option is Boris, but there surely must be someone else. This might be something to talk about with Zarana.

EDIT:

*Alternatively, we might want to spend a project learning to apply the ideas we learned by analyzing Emma. I would suggest the better form of healing, as it's PR++ and will be stupidly useful for the Beastmen conflict too. So switching that and Fire Sorcery.

*If that Switch to flesh spell stands, we need another partial project for Kat. Making those Stealth Wards, and maybe coming along on that aventure of shady Nikolai deals, could be interesting.

Can't they just masturbate?

Yes. They can also have sex with each other if they're so inclined. But consider the psychological effects of being seriously aroused by violence and bloodshed on someone who gets divine orders to go kill some monsters every few days. Now remember that they usually get called when they're around 11-13, so most of them have never experienced a normal sex drive. It's actually kind of impressive that Emma is just an attention-hungry adrenaline junkie, and not some kind of deranged serial killer.

Good question. You've never heard of anyone with that specialty, so it's hard to be sure. Floating castles? High-speed flight? Force bolts and personal force fields? It's probably a lot more blatant than most types of magic, and well-suited to simple brute force applications.

Graig said:

You can do it as a full action or a minor one depending on how much time you want to spend getting to know her.

Technically it's 'do anything that can be justified as falling within one of my specialties'. So Kat would have to do something like create a ward that 'protects' you from being detected. That's a pretty strained interpretation, so it would require Wizardry 4.

...which she has, now. So yes, she can create a moderately effective stealth buff.

The one you're currently planning for.

What do you think of using the Zarana meeting to go and do the Nikolai lead? Likewise, would you switch the Flesh learning action for a spell: improved healing Flesh learning action? Hunting beastmen should give us Flesh learning anyway, but the ability to go and heal the wounded might be invaluable.

I think involving Zarana in any of our inter-family politics is premature at this stage of things, it might be possible after we get a better handle on her, but not right now. Sure I can switch in the healing action.

Could be. It occurs to you that you're actually not sure how many smugglers there are or how much money they're costing you. For all you know they could be a group of Kiscun's men secretly smuggling iron upriver to evade the absurd markups caused by paying tariffs at every fief along the river.

You should expect this to take a lot of training - not only do you need Wizard levels, you'll also need to learn one or more specialties before you can actually do anything.

FYI this will probably just upgrade your x2 healing rate buff to x4, which is useful but not a game changer.

You don't need to shoehorn her in unless you actually want her there. Kat is highly motivated, and if you don't assign her an adventure for the partial action she'll find her own uses for the time. Based on recent experience she's quite good at squeezing a lot of training effect out of her partial actions.

Since you almost always create mixed groups like this when you have a mission Bialis is going to suggest setting up some permanent combined-arms units. Maybe:

1st Corzu Foot - 5 men at arms, 20 spearmen, 15 archers
2nd Corzu Foot - 5 men at arms, 20 spearmen, 15 archers
Corzu Garrison - 5 men at arms, 20 spearment, 10 archers

That way when you have a mission you can just assign one or more units to it. Keeping the men organized in stable units will let you set up a stable chain of command, and will generally make it a lot easier for them to reach a decent level of quality and maintain it.

Ok, to put things in a clearer fashion than tl;dr:

Dominic
Major actions
1) Hunt threat: Beastmen
2) Meet with Zarana, court her, learn as much as possible about her and her Barony. If you think it's safe, find an intrigue to play with her.
3) Research more sophisticated healing

Dita
1) Swordsmanship 4/4
2) Hunt threat: Beastmen

Kat
1) Finish Granary
2°) Hunt threat: Beastmen.

Sir Bialis
1) Hunt threat: Beatsmen

Jaroslaw
1) 50 Hunt threat: Beatsmen, 10 Garrison

Traian
1) Purchase transports necessary for the granary project, Begin planning road repair if he has the time.

Men at arms
1st Corzu Foot - 5 men at arms, 20 spearmen, 15 archers: Hunt Beastmen
2nd Corzu Foot - 5 men at arms, 20 spearmen, 15 archers: Hunt Beastmen
Corzu Garrison - 5 men at arms, 20 spearment, 10 archers: Garrison

Minor Actions
1)Call up Ditrik to help hunt the Beastmen
2)Analyze Dita's magic while she is doing various things, trying to ascertain how much of her Faerie gifts work like the Chosen's, and whether she could learn to channel them through mediation and visualization like the Chosen could.
3°) Do the same with Kat if you have the time. While her mother being a Efreet might just be bravado, it might not. Likewise, bring up the idea of a tough physical regimen. A Healthy Mind lives in a Healthy Body, after all.

For Hunt Beastmen, I would suggest to have Bialis and Jaroslaw lead 1st Corzu foot, and a second group comprised of Dominic, Dita, Kat, Ditri, the 2nd Corzu foot, with two men-at-arm and Ditri being under Dita's command, and 3 men-at-arms being on bodyguard's duty for Kat. Kat's role should mostly be pre-battle warding, but any other help is welcome.

We are aiming to capture some beastmen alive, as with Kat and Dita's help we should be able to purify them enough for studying their flesh safely.

That's what i meant by 'talking to Ezti about them if we marry her', yes.

The combined unit idea sounds good, but how would that interact with training exactly?

Also it occurs to me that Kat might be able to get her partial action upgraded to a full action if we assign her the boot camp training to get her a body point. Also, considering all the interesting things studying the chosen taught us, if her mother really was an Efreet her body probably also has some interesting aspects we could learn from it.

Ok, Kat is good at social maneuvering, which is impressive, but it also makes me think we should use a minor action to tell her to knock it off a notch in a diplomatic manner. She has made her point- a very good point- about being a valid marriage prospect, and even went as far as saying that as long as it's someone she approves of she doesn't mind us also having a Berjorian wife. However, we are Berjorian and not Egyptian, and she is having trouble understanding the differences.

We can't think of a potential wife in the same terms as we think of a mistress, and as such her mentoring of common serving mistresses doesn't propel them up or make her seem more kinky- it makes her seem to have a lack of pride and decorum, as well as make her nearer mistress status, not wife status.

It is important that she be aware of this, that she is currently a woman of power at least in the mercantile, wizardry, socializing and mental senses, so putting herself on the same level as our peasant mistress, even in just the sense of "i am their mentors", brings her down and make her a less attractive wife. We are Berjorian, and do not have Egyptian sensibilities about this, whatever they are.

As Kat seems to be intent on befriending Dita, i am tempted to ask her to mentor her- but make sure not to mentor her on the wrong things:

Likewise, we do not appreciate Dita being brought into those harem ideas. Our cousin having a crush on us is one thing- Kids often have a crush on their mentors- but if Kat wants to prove herself to us maybe she should help us make sure Dita is looking at this crush in mature manner; and she is absolutely not to be influenced by our mistresses. If she is to socialize with them, it should be in order to learn how to deal with mistresses in an effective manner, how to manipulate them - you (Kat) yourself could teach her that- but she should try to do it in a dignified manner. You (Kat) must make sure of that.

She is member of house Petran, and we intend for her to stay such. This mean, from the outside, she must look proper at least a good part of the time. When she marries, it will be in part for political reasons: we are currently ourself looking at our own prospects. Maybe Kat could encourage Dita to see how we proceed to determine what makes a prospect interesting, the political and personal aspects we are looking for?

I also want Kat to spend time teaching Dita how to turn a project into a adventure lead.

Overall life is good, but whatever you end up doing about a marriage alliance is going to complicate matters.

You agree to meet with Baron Balzar's daughter Zarana to investigate the possibility of a marriage alliance. Gavrilla is now expecting to hear a proposal from you by September, and is likely to start pressuring you to marry if she doesn't hear anything by then.
We need to make sure to have Kat and Dita be aware that Zarana comes from a family known for their intrigues abilities. They ARE going to be outmaneuvered. The question is not to be totally stomped.

So, anyway, thinking of switching like this:
[]Dita: Mentored by Kat (project into adventure lead)
[]Dita: Hunt Beastmen

[]Kat: Mentor Dita (project unto adventure lead)
[]Kat: Granary completion

Minor action:
4°) Talk to Kat about being more careful on how she shows herself around our mistresses as we can't afford a wife that seems like a peasant, and ask her to mentor Dita.

Stat bonus while in Corzu: +1 Soul
Sense supernatural evil within 1 mile while in Corzu

Urk. Why did we settle for the second one when we could have had Kat just make wards that does the same thing?

Because we didn't know Kat could do that. We still don't, actually, since we haven't had her attempt it.

Katiana Nevyana - age 17 - Cost: 7 SP/turn
• Body 0, Mind 3, Soul 4, Charm 3
• Engineering 1 [+1/4], Merchant 2, Seduction 2, Staff 1, Stoneworking 1 [+2/4], Woodscraft 1
• Earth Sorcery 3 [+1/16] (shape, fuse & shatter earth & stone)
• Fire Sorcery 1 [+1/4] (light, extinguish & resist small fires)
• Wizardry 4 (dance magic, invocation, protection & wards, meta-magic)

Somehow, I doubt that she can't make something like a line to line detect evil ward that triggers if something evil passes through it.

That may be so, but we don't have any kind of confirmation of it yet -- Dominic has been wrong about her stats twice so far. For all we know, technically a ward may be an effect that has a repelling effect rather than a detecting one.

I don't think those are the wards that you are thinking of, though i might be wrong. Even if they are, though, those are static wards- She could, in those instances, make wards on the Castle that will scream if Evil comes through.

It cannot, say, make Dominic go 'hey, there is an evil wizard a kilometer away' when he is in a forest in the middle of his fief.

Edit:

Anyway, now that i think of it more, Kat probably can't teach her way to make adventures out of partial projects easily. It's almost certainly a byproduct of having only one project (Damn Body 0) and Soul 4 (incredible willpower) that forced her mind into strange places.

Also, possibly being a Efreet's daughter.

RE-EDIT:
@ShaperV: It's not said in the result post, but can it be assumed we agreed to have Gavrilla feed us Adventure lead? And when can we expect them to begin coming?

@ShaperV

Full scene boosts of Strength and Dexterity would be direcrly reseachable correct? As in we dont need a middle step

For a bath house what stat + skill level would be required

Arkeus' plan (including the post about Dita&Kat) sounds the best right now, but I wonder what genius Darklight will bring in this time. ;)

Pity bringing the remaining 104 of our 124 troops to equipment 2 (aka more than just weapons and clothing) would cost 1,500 (well, okay, that's for 120 men) of our 1,905 SP. In other words, way, way too much. We can't even think of level 3 right now.
The tents would actually be useful in housing them while the Keep is still under repair and they have to camp in the castle, tbh.
And let's hope the hunt gets them skill ups as well, not just casualties.
