I really should hang out here, at QQ, more often.

seems like the best option available, that way we have protection and can return the favor as well, and we can always become a devil later if we really want to.

Can we add asking about Heaven and Angels to the list? And the Fallen Angels for that matter?

How do you invent new Sorcery spells again?

It takes some number of weeks times the circle of the spell(1 for Emerald, 2 for Sapphire, 3 for Adamant) spent doing some kind of research or symbolic activity.

Due to the nature of the Salina working, one could see symbolism and gain inspiration from anything in the world to obtain their spells, like my earlier example of figuring out how to cast Magma Kraken by watching tentacle porn.

Granted, studying motonic sciences and the flows of Essence are safer because you actually know what's going on, rather than rely on inspiration.

Not really, no. Akeno is still able to use her holy lightning without hurting herself despite being a devil.

However, Holy Charms explicitly stop working for the user if they become a Creature of Darkness.

Given we are a Solar and our Charmset is littered with Holy Charms, let's not do that, shall we?

Hmm... I'm on the fence between joining as a magician and trying to find another solution.
On one hand, joining as a magician would give us access to Rias' support without becoming her servant.
On the other hand, i kinda want to see what other options there are. We could always befriend Rias first and contract her later or ask for some more time to think about this and take a look around. I'm pretty sure the tennis club person could lead us to something interesting if we explain our situation. Also, the relationship between magicians and devils has never been really explained. Magicians are considered a faction of their own but at the same time they make deals with devils pretty often so I'm not sure where that would put us on the political map. Keeping ourselves as neutral as possible would be desireable, at least until the three factions make peace.

Whatever we do, we should ask more about the relationship between a devil and their contracted magician and what would "help and fight for" exactly entail. Notice the underlined parts:

Alexander said:
"The third is to become a Magician and become affiliated with my clan."

"Magician? As, a human who can use magic? A mage?"

"Correct. You said your Sacred Gear allowed you to instantly analyze and understand the magic signs in this room, right?" You nod. "When you did it you released powerful magical energy. I think it's either an innate talent or another gift from your Sacred Gear."

[You are a Twilight Caste.] Bright says with smugness and pride. [In its rank there were the greatest scholars, sorcerers and artisans of the Realm. Magic and knowledge flows into your body as easily as air and blood.]

"I believe you could be a good Magician Hyodo-kun. Now, Devils and humans use magic differently, but human magic was first developed by studying Devils and their magic. It is considered something of a rite of passage for a young up-and-coming Devil to make a pact with a Magician. As such we have a long-last relationship with Magicians all over the world and frequently exchange techniques and knowledge. Even without joining a Mage Association you could learn magic by working for me and be able to summon one of us in case someone like the Fallen Angels attack you. In exchange you will help and fight for me."

This is also interesting. On one hand, magic! On the other, you may be called to fight in Rias-sempai's name.

Those make me feel like Rias is not telling everything that the contract would require us to do. She is obviously trying to sell this to us, if you look at the way she told us about the other options, she pointed the negative points out very clearly and here she doesn't really tell us anything but a vague "help and fight for" so i can't help but to feel suspicious. It sounds a lot like a relationship between vassal and liege.

Things i think we should try find out before we agree to anything:

-What "help and fight for" entails?
-What would our official standing be? (i.e. where would we stand in relation to Rias?)
-What would our political standing be? (i.e. would we be considered a part of the devil faction or just an ally of the Gremory house?)
-How much power over our actions would the contract give her? (i.e. how much can "help and fight for" abused?)
-How permanent would the contract be? (i.e. can we just bail out if this turns out to be more trouble than it's worth?)
-Would this prevent us from making contracts or alliances with other people, especially those who are unrelated or unfriendly to the devil faction?
-Other possible allies (ask from Kiyome Abe, not Rias)

That's everything i can think of right now.
As i mentioned before, showing interest in the magician option but asking for some more time to think about it (this is a big decision for us) and going to a third party for some information about stuff that Rias may not mention could be a good idea.

Of course this could be me just being paranoid.

Any thoughs on this?

I went with "Find Another Solution," because all of the other options make us subordinate to Rias or her family.
Affiliate
af·fil·i·ate (ə-fĭl′ē-āt′)
v. af·fil·i·at·ed, af·fil·i·at·ing, af·fil·i·ates
1. To adopt or accept as a member, subordinate associate, or branch: The HMO affiliated the clinics last year.
2. To associate (oneself) as a subordinate, subsidiary, employee, or member: affiliated herself with a new law firm.

To become closely connected or associated: The two unions voted to affiliate.
A person, organization, or establishment associated with another as a subordinate, subsidiary, or member: network affiliates.
While joining as a magician doesn't necessarily mean that we'll be subordinate to the Gremory clan, it seems likely, from the other choices.

To be fair, though, we could probably use our closeness to seduce Rias, and her entire peerage (I'm sure we could find a gender-changing spell for Kiba somewhere.).

I would like Kiba to watch Fate/Stay Night just for him to take a lesson or two from Shirou Emiya and Archer.
And maybe re-create Unlimited Bladeworks.

Any particular reason why?
I'd like to hear reasons for why people are picking that option.

Because it plays to our strengths the most as a Twilight caste Solar Exalted, and it doesn't make us fully subordinate in the way that being a permanent or temporary devil would.

I can see that, but like i said in that post i posted earlier, it seems less like a classic magician contract and more like an employment offer, which is reasonable, because we don't really have any experience as a mage but not necessarily something we want. We would still be working for Gremory house and there's really nothing keeping us from pursuing magic on our own and contracting later on more equal terms.

Gremory house hasn't don't anything to warrant mistrust from Issei so far, and we already know that more Fallen Angels will be coming after us. I would rather we have a confirmed ally to support us in facing them rather than trying to go it alone and work out a better contract later. Besides, if we become powerful enough as an Exalted, we can always renegotiate later on anyway.

Can we? We don't know any details about this contract beyond "We teach you magic and you do shit for us".
I feel like we don't have nowhere near enough information about what they want us to do to accept anything right now. Like i and some other people have said many times before in this thread, while devils are the most powerful faction to work with right now, it's not the only one which is why i am proposing that we leave our options open and ask for more information on the terms and more time to consider so we can ask other people what they have to offer. It's very unlikely that we'll get attacked in the next two or three days it would take us to evaluate our situation better and Rias seems to think that we could be a valueable asset so she will probably be willing to wait for a while or if we can show her results, get us a better deal from the get go.

Abe owes us so she may be able to hook us up with some study material or help. We have options, it's not like we have to jump on board with the first offer.

Also, as payment, Rias will probably make us do some mundane, time-consuming chores like distributing fliers or something and i am not too eager to waste time on such things when we could be learning to defend ourselves i.e. studying magic.

[X] Don't agree to any of the three options yet. Instead ask for more information regarding the nature of a Magician's affiliation with House Gremory, including specific obligations, duration, and our position in relation to Rias, House Gremory, and the Devil faction as a whole.

That doesn't seem likely when she has her familiars to do it for her. If she's going to call in a favor it's probably going to be something suited to our abilities. Issei really only did that sort of thing in canon because his demonic powers were shit-tier at the start.

Now that you mention it, you're probably right.
Still, couldn't hurt to ask what would our contract entails and whether it'll be made now or after we learn some magic.

I definitely have no problem with going the magician route (we are kind of stuck on it as we are Twilight caste) but knowing what we are getting into before we jump in would be nice.
Also, if we can convince Rias to finalize the contract after we learn magic and it becomes obvious that we are going to be more valuable as an ally to avoid subordinate status, because it will make dealing with other devils a pain and limit our options of future allies/friends/concubines/subordinates/minions/whatever we are going to get, we will have more room to haggle for a better deal.
I am not against working with Rias, i am against working for her.

You know what, maybe P_D's right. I'm not averse to waiting and getting more clarification on the terms of being a Magician before going through with it. What does everyone else think?

I'm too worried about not having allies when the fallen angels come for round two.

I agree, but I don't THINK there's anything stopping us from asking for more information on what being a Magician entails, and THEN agreeing to it. At the very least, it would give us material to plan for.

If waiting only involves a single post for clarification then yeah, I'll do that. If it means Issei going home and losing a day or two before he makes up his mind then that's a different matter. I want to get started on EXP farming for our combat traits as soon as possible.

Now that I think about it, would Rias even be able to turn us into a demon? Like, would we just absorb the Evil Piece, and get a boost?

Well how do we find out either way? Just ask the GM?
