well, the redtext should be a clue, but it doesn't mesh with any of our actual powers, so i assumed it was theatrics only.

also, i fucking hate roll-a-quests.

wether you vote for something smart or dumb is almost completely irrelevant , everything depends on the roll of a dice.

fucking hell, i should have voted to just pass out. it would never have won, but it would have made me feel better.

Your arms are bound right now. You can't really cast spells. With the Attack! option, you're drawing on hellfire, giving it a brief impression of a thought to guide it and hoping for the best. With the Speak! option, you're doing something similar, save with a different thought.

In character, you recognize what you're doing. It's pretty much the same thing you did as a kid when you threw around magic and let it run wild.

As for it being rather random... Well, yes. It's basically wild magic, except that given it's origin it has an actively malicious edge to it. You survived using it as a child mostly because you were fairly weak, and couldn't quite muster the power to kill yourself.

Now? You're much stronger. And you just rolled the worst possible outcome for Speak!.

Almost done with update, by the way. I keep getting distracted by Worm-fiction...

A Lovely Light

You feel fear for the first time in a very long time, not for yourself but for your friend who is facing a gargoyle on your behalf.

And all you can do is struggle uselessly, against your bindings as the world swims away.

No.

You refuse to let your friend die this way.

You haven't done this since you were a child, throw hellfire into the world with only a thought to guide it. The Old Man made you swear to stop, to learn to control your power, after you spoke a swarm of poisonous brass hornets into being, resulting in the death of one of your watchers.

You break your word now.

You draw on your birthright, the spark of hellfire burning in the deepest recesses of your soul. You fan it to a flame, then an inferno, letting it fill your entire being before spilling it out into the world in the form of an absolute command for Purple to RUN!

The Word explodes from your mouth like a cannon shot, taking your lower jaw with it in a wash of bloody flames. You're thrown back by the explosion of force, but that's the least of your troubles. The flames keep coming, pouring from the shattered ruin of your mouth like a fountain, nesting in your lungs, burning you alive from the inside out. Flesh blackens, bone cracks and crumbles.

As your earthly shell dissolves in the fire's embrace, you exist for a moment as a creature of pure, supernal flame, a dancing blade of hellfire held against the throat of creation, and you know this was what you were always meant to be…

… And then, with that thought, you fade away.

Note: Bad luck on that roll. An 80 or above would have netted you a permanent tongues ability. 70+ would have let you learn the spell. 60-70 would have teleported purple somewhere else. 50-60 would have hasted her… And anything less than fifty leads to bad stuff.

90% of the production time for this was wondering whether I should fudge the table to soften the blow. I decided against it.

Eh. I was going by tens.

Then again, the second worst was burning out your vocal chords (both literally and permanently). Y'know, the things you need to cast spells? That would have been fun too.

I'd figured there'd be a magical effect to the word, but the worst I'd expected was Purple running away until she passed out in exhaustion. Blowing ourself up? Never saw it coming.

I didn't vote for DC, but I honestly have no enthusiasm whatsoever for starting over or picking another world just because we hit a single Bad End.

Rude Awakenings

You hesitate before reaching for the hellfire, remembering the havoc you caused when you were younger. That hesitation costs you as darkness falls like a veil across your eyes and the world drifts away…

Your last thoughts are of your friend…

You wake with a start of surprise because you never expected to wake again.

You are no longer in a sewer, but a bare stone cell. Admittedly, it's dryer and smells less noxious, but you can't exactly say your accommodations have improved.

There's a circle inscribed on the floor, glowing with soft blue light. Your eyes narrow as you sit up and observe. It looks like a containment circle, like those used for summoned demons. You prod at the air above it carefully, jerking your hand back when the thin air explodes into a snarl of crackling blue energy.

Nasty.

You contemplate your next move. You could probably overpower the ward if you batter it with enough spells. Or you could just force yourself through it, though that would be considerably more painful…

Before you can decide on a course of action, a door you didn't notice in the dim light of the cell opens and a man walks in.

He seems… youngish old. He looks to be in his thirties, but there's something around his eyes that reminds you of the Old Man. His only other distinguishing mark is a shock of white in his reddish brown hair.

He regards you with mild interest before opening his mouth to speak.

"So… you're awake. How are you feeling?"

You are about to offer a suitably scathing retort when you realize you actually understood that. It sounds like an odd dialect of infernal.

Finally, someone in this backwards universe speaks a civilized tongue!
