What a coincidence this happens now, right after something about Influence was mentioned by someone else. Right?

Well, maybe not being ashblasted, DEFINITELY thrown in prison or at least put under heavy watch. This reminds me of the conversation we (the thread) had before/after/during the Burning of Canterlot. Iirc, a not uncommon sentiment at the time was that under any other circumstance, Velvet would probably deserve to stand judgement before Celestia and get ashblasted or thrown in prison (depending on her mental state). Unfortunately, Velvet is also the main character, and facing justice just means that the quest comes to an unsatisfying end.
I'm pretty he got it via training but Velvet got Edge scraps via training too, it's edge you know.
Edge has its own special rules though.
Getting higher level lore does still requires reaching higher level lore sources no matter the type.
The world is mostly devoid of those higher level sources.
Even the Master couldn't reach Mastery without access to higher level sources.
well, for Velvet it definitely is.Earlier in the quest, my initial thought on what to do if you died was "whoever has custody of Silky".
Then Selene happened. The Soft happened. And more recently Axe happened.
My knee-jerk reaction is still Soft. But I'll be honest, this quest surprises me as much as it surprises you all. So who knows.
Not dying feels like the better option.
and five Name-rituals that (pinches her cheek while doing a baby voice) we both know I'll never let you contest me on."
...the way I see it, this is the most "irrational" and "emotional" choice on Velvet's part. So, I am not worried about how Velvet will teach Soft, and will instead focus on her thoughts of why she thought the best idea was to teach those rituals.
And the only thing that comes to mind is that "you trust Soft".
You could have given her anything else, but you decided to give her all the tools to "accomplish her objective of helping you" and no true direction on how to do it. In fact, you won't even tell her she has a cult (in your eyes).
So yeah, this will be a big "follow your heart" moment for her, and a big "I trust my daughter" moment for you.
It remains to be seen what they will think they can do with the tools they will be offered.
To be fair it's an Alicorn with FOUR lore affinities, AND the higher combat score out of them all when going all out.I hope there is a vote for it of it happens. Soft, Selene and Axe? The thread will light up with the flames of war!
I would choose the Alicorn.
I know, I know. How original of the Harmonist to want to play with a Princess.
Correct.
And before you ask yourselves "what kind of mother would do this?", I invite you to turn this question on its head.
Don't think that "Velvet would never do this, because she is a great mother." Instead, ask "if Velvet is such a great mother, why is she doing this?"
What does it mean, when you guys tell me that Velvet's idea of "encouraging her daughter" is to hand her esoteric tools? What does this mean for Velvet's perspective of what is healthy, or even normal?
You guys already have one Sacrament, are actively working towards several more, and only aren't All-4 because of very funny circumstances.
So, you tell me![]()
I say this without any malice. But can you show me that on the vote? Our plan specifically called to study the Moth 3 artifact if we oneshot the book?
We specifically ordered the priority on purpose so that it would be a Study 1 book 1 artifact action if we got the moth book first try and a study 3 books action otherwise
Huh. Wasn't expecting us to get three expedition sites! You have successfully studied a book without any Lore levels. Three Expedition sites have been added to your expedition pool.
Location: The notes taken from Copper Secateur's headquarters talk about a pony who "owed them" something. Was it a traitor who ran away with secrets? Was it a common thief? You have a cutie mark, and an address in Cloudsdale, that could shed some light into it.
Expected duration: SHORT
Base cost: 6 bits (you must have at least 30 bits per creature sent)
Expected dangers: UNKNOWN (expedition not scouted)
Location: The notes taken from Copper Secateur's headquarters mentioned other locations where they could have installed themselves in, or perhaps places where they could hide resources or ponies. This particular place was singled out. However, unfortunately, the notes that specified what it holds (or held) have long been lost.
Expected duration: SHORT
Base cost: 5 bits (you must have at least 25 bits per creature sent)
Expected dangers: UNKNOWN (expedition not scouted)
I'm guessing, in order, these might award bits, a ritual site, and... I'm not sure what the third one might give us, honestly.Location: The notes taken from Copper Secateur's headquarters talk in length about other criminal gangs in Manehattan, and singles one of them out as a possible target. You suspect that whatever that group holds, or does, would have been of interest to a Lore practitioner.
Expected duration: SHORT
Base cost: 5 bits (you must have at least 25 bits per creature sent)
Expected dangers: UNKNOWN (expedition not scouted)
LANTERN Level 4 (STUDIED)
"A many-pronged instrument that can fold onto itself like a switchblade. You believe it is a measuring instrument, but you have no idea what it is meant to measure. And for some reason, it seems to work better, or at least its joints seem to yield more fluidly, when used in utter darkness."
Appraised cost: 500 bits
Special properties: This artifact is particularly well-crafted, even by modern pony standards. It can be sold for 100 bits more than the usual rate of 400 bits.
So basically we've got something extra valuable, and something less valuable. I guess we could burn the Winter artifact as sacrifice fodder, but frankly we just don't have a lot of rituals that would need +40 Winter. And considering the effect, this is a bad thing to sent on expeditions. I suppose 100 bits is 100 bits, if nothing else. If we ever find another Lantern 4+ artifact to use in its place, we've got quite the windfall in waiting.WINTER Level 4 (STUDIED) (CURSED!)
"An old, but well kept, candle snuffer.
Appraised cost: 100 bits (cursed!)
Special properties: Any character who uses this artifact (either on a ritual, or as a Lore-level during an expedition) will be cursed with "bad luck". That character will have one random dice roll on the following turn be rolled under a "roll two dice, keep worst result" rule.
You removed the Moth artifact from the study action. It was only the Moth book, the Manehattan book, the Lantern artifact, and the Winter artifact listed. Our plan specifically called to study the Moth 3 artifact if we oneshot the book?

It's a reference to the Painted River in the Mansus, which was created by the Moth-Hour Vagabond before she was banished from the House of the Sun for a crime she had not yet commited.Nice! That went smoothly.I feel there's definitely some pieces to unpack in that Moth book… rivers, huh? Do we know of any important rivers…?
A trio of short expeditions is also quite nice to have in our back pocket. Good way to put the Names to work.
Damn girl, chill. But same.It was the smile of a mare who, by the very nature of your request, had just been proven right.
And it was also the smile of a monster.
Duh, Colonel Name."I know you will arrange to be delivered the soldier's blade, not long from now. Just don't use these to look directly into that weapon," she said, like a merchant explaining a minor detail of a product. "The sight will blind you. Permanently."
Yay! Time to see what we get!
Holy shit... What else we reading? Since there should be a spot left if everything else succeeds.[Moth Book, Level 5. "Ancient Beyond History, -50 per roll". Current progress 0/100]
[Roll = 96 + 14 (Learning) + 5 (Well Read) + 20 (Lantern application) + 11 (SH Artifact) + 40 ("A Splendour") – 50 ("Ancient Beyond History") = 136]
[Book successfully deciphered]
I have no idea what this means. Well, maybe I see some Vagabond references, but that is all."There will come the [day/scandal/plan] when we must be [forgotten/hidden/conserved]. Like [undecipherable] on a jar, awaiting [a feast/death/the birth of the recipient of a gift].
Our [best/worst/only] solution will be to use the rivers to [hide/die/drink].
Fortunately, our [patron/enemy/other party of a contract] has already [planted the seeds/painted the rivers/distributed herbs used for poisoning].
Will she betray us? Of course she will betray us. That is [what makes it fun/the only guarantee we have/the sole regret of a widowed wife].
But that is [a/the] [bargain, in the sense of a deal/bargain, in the sense of a bet/bargain, in the sense of a low price] that I am willing to take.
That is my [hope for a peaceful death/hope for a fruitful life/lack of hope, when something goes wrong]."
Another success, now we only need 1 scrap to take Baldomare's Sacrament.[Lantern Artifact, Level 4. CD 90]
[Roll = 14 + 14 (Learning) + 20 (Lantern application) + 8 (SH Artifact) + 40 ("A Splendour") = 96]

We just keep winning huh? No reroll used yet.[Winter Artifact, Level 4. CD 90]
[Roll = 50 + 14 (Learning) + 20 (Lantern application) + 14 (SH Artifact) + 40 ("A Splendour") = 138]
So that is how a no lore book works? And damn we cleared it 3 times over.[A Book of no Lore levels. CD 50]
[Roll = 75 + 14 (Learning) + 5 (Well Read) + 20 (Lantern application) + 10 (SH Artifact) + 40 ("A Splendour") = 164]

Ohhh yeah that's true. If it is expansion plans, that might be where Neighnia had headed off to to work on establishing a new branch.
Oh FUCK I had a copy paste error when I made the vote im so retarded im really sorry everyone
I don't think we need to say we'll never use the Winter artefact. Winter is one of our weaker expedition lores, and +20 nets out to more than a roll at disadvantage in expectation. And we can also do things with giving it to a MitL or Risen at the end of their summon period…

I have to say, this is an amazing description for a high level MOTH book. However, there is an air about this "book" you just placed on your study desk. Something about it feels… like it is calling to you. Not as a sharp challenge to be conquered, and not as a bright treasure to be deciphered. But instead, you feel like these crumbling sheets of paper are inviting your eyes to hurl themselves against them, like a colt might invite his troublemaking friends to tumble down a steep hill for fun.
Reading this feels… erratic, counterproductive, and maybe even unsafe. But there is a part of you that just wants you to do it.
Or at least that is what you feel, until you put on Baldomare's glasses.
Because now… now the pages before you make a little more sense. But you also feel like you have just dissected a joke, and for all that you understand it now, you will never be able to laugh at it again.
Knowledge is never kind you suppose.

...I forget, where did we find it?You could learn much from this confusion. As well as from the intriguing implications this letter has, considering when it was written and where it was found.
uh. that IS indeed ironic.Whatever the answer may be, the irony of the situation is still not lost to you.
Because of course Copper Secateur would find a way to remain a thorn on your side. Even after her passing, and by means of a Winter-soaked artifact.
You have deciphered and ancient book of Moth. Gained one scrap of Moth Lore, and the equivalent Manuscript. Given where it was found, you suspect it was surprisingly tame and safe, despite its age.
Your Moth Lore is now at Level 4, with 4/4 scraps of progression attained. You will no longer be able to gain any scraps of Moth (they will be "wasted" if gained) until you attain Sacrament.
You have successfully studied a book without any Lore levels. Three Expedition sites have been added to your expedition pool.
nice. I'll check the inventory in a sec.You have successfully studied a Lantern Artifact and a Winter Artifact. You have gained one scrap of Lantern and Winter Lores, and your information on those artifacts has been updated. Both artifacts are now available for use.
Under a fair reading of your actions, you have used one Study action to study two artifacts (2/2 artifacts for a dedicated action), and one Study action to study two books (2/3 books for a dedicated action). Thus, you can still study a third book (roll one study-dice for a single book) under your book Study action.
A vote on what book you would like to study will be held later this turn.
You are now under the effect of "A Splendour" (+40 for all Lantern rolls).
Because your Lantern is not yet Level 5, and this is your first time under this Influence, you have gained two scraps of Lantern Lore.
And if you would like a more in-depth view of how another Adept could react to Baldomare's "blessings", you can check it out here!
Baldomerian gave her glasses, to be worn even while you sleep. You always see, you are never blind, closing your eyes no longer helps.

1 scrap away from maxed Lantern. both Baldomare and Velvet sacraments require 4/4 scraps here.
2 scraps away from max winter. And, by the way, the Winter Sacrament doens't have a scrap requirement if we wanted to go for it (we probably don't want to, at least not now).
[] Gift her inspiration.
-"There is a reason why "Caput" is the first word in His invocation."
-Velvet Covers will come to understand the effects of Regrettable Actions on the world, as if she had performed a fourth Regrettable Action and crossed the "midway point".
-Velvet Covers will gain the Trait [XVI:18-19], which will have the following effects:
-She will understand exactly what it is that you want. And you will be so proud of her.Soft Sweeps will narratively begin to act as if she has "one more Stain than in the current counter". However, mechanically, she will continue to have the same number of Stains Velvet Covers has.
-This is NOT a Regrettable Action.
[] Gift her tools.
-"Whatever it is you desire to do, these are the means to do it."
-Soft Sweeps (and through her, her congregation) will learn all the usable rituals you currently know.
-Rites that can no longer be used, or that have not yet been fully researched, will not be taught.
-You will not give her any directions of what to do, exactly. And she will understand that you trust her, and that this is a test.
[] Gift her influence.
-"Ponyville is growing. I would like the right hoofs to take the reins before it grows too much."
-Soft Sweeps (and through her, her congregation) will gain power and influence over Ponyville.
-Mayor Mare will be… "negatively affected" if she does not become a "Close Friend" to Velvet Covers by the end of Turn 23. (Leashing her from Friend to Close Friend is fine)
-You will tell her that you hope Ponyville turns out "the right way". And as much as it scares her to have this much responsibility, she will try her best.
[] Gift her freedom.
-"Now this is quite a fine group of friends you have made Softy. Would you mind if I joined you next week as well?"
-Velvet Covers will permanently lose one Action Point per turn.
-Velvet Covers will assume control over Soft Sweeps' nascent "gathering," and will be given options to direct it each turn.
And this is telling her "you can't and SHOULDN'T help me", she won't take it well, and will do something regrettable to convince us we're wrong, or because she feels she musts.[] Give her nothing.
-"You regret this, you regret all of this."
-You will not be refunded your action point for this.
-"Dire consequences" will ensue, as if you had chosen not to spend time with Soft Sweeps and fulfill your promise.
-But oh, the inspiration this will give your daughter.
-This is NOT a Regrettable Action.
Huh, didn't think about that loophole.I don't think we need to say we'll never use the Winter artefact. Winter is one of our weaker expedition lores, and +20 nets out to more than a roll at disadvantage in expectation. And we can also do things with giving it to a MitL or Risen at the end of their summon period…
Mareinette, Selene, Axe, Biedde... either of them could probably complete one on their own. Baldomare too if it's not one that requires combat.
This is in a way "infantilizing" her. It's removing her responsibilities and duties, even if self-imposed, by telling her "you can help me by putting me in charge of what resources you have gained on her own.
In a way it'a accepting the gift of what she has gained so far, and tell her "you did a decent job, now let me do an even better one".
Thought I switched votes already but here you go.
[X] Gift her tools
[X] Gift her inspiration.
The painted river in the Mansus comes to mind.Nice! That went smoothly.I feel there's definitely some pieces to unpack in that Moth book… rivers, huh? Do we know of any important rivers…?
and I forgot to check if they had been added! nice that you did it already.
insightful of you. The loophole makes it more valuable than I thought.I don't think we need to say we'll never use the Winter artefact. Winter is one of our weaker expedition lores, and +20 nets out to more than a roll at disadvantage in expectation. And we can also do things with giving it to a MitL or Risen at the end of their summon period…
I say send Mareinette to the thief, Biedde to the gang, and Axe for the other one.
Or we could send the "weaker" followers (like Comet or Jade) with artifact support...
Don't get too ahead of yourself there, Pitt. Remember that we already are planning on running two expeditions next turn, and one of them is likely to need multi-Name support.I say send Mareinette to the thief, Biedde to the gang, and Axe for the other one.
Or we could send the "weaker" followers (like Comet or Jade) with artifact support...
You're absolutely right.I think your forgetting that for short expeditions the Confidante/Summon actions required to go if they're not the leader is free. Sure you have the small bit cost but that is absolutely worth keeping the Name ap free. Hell spending the Name AP on making bits probably pays back the cost of adding them on expeditions and some.
Artifacts for the Names is probably safe as they'll keep them from being damaged.
So Expeditions would look like:
1 AP leader (Shattered Risen or Comet orJade)
- free AP (Biedde or Mareinette or Axe)
-- Artifacts for the Name
yeah, I just found it really funny hereI've agreed with you on stuff before you know.
Sometimes we disagree, sometimes your right and I'm wrong sometimes the opposite, and sometimes we agree.
It's nothing big.
Though I don't think a Shattered Risen can realistically LEAD an expedition. They're not quite clever enough to.
So more like sending Comet and Jade. Rarity is better used for bits.
So,
Comet + Name
Jade + Name
Only Velvet Covers herself, ponies who are confidantes or above, and her summoned minions may be selected for an expedition.
Because of course Copper Secateur would find a way to remain a thorn on your side.
No thank you, Wolf. Plus, we promised Soft we'd hang out with her. Are we going to flake on her just because we're busy with work things like "reaching Glory" and "not getting vaporized by Celestia" that don't really matter in the long-term compared to our family?
